F
Bay an industry leader in today’s outdoor apparel industry. Always in the forefront of new fabric technology, Bimini Bay has also been a manufacturing leader in creating moisture management systems. Their shirts are engineered to keep the body comfortable and dry by drawing moisture to the fabric’s surface (wicking) where it can quickly evaporate. Now, with the introduction of their BloodGuard line, they have set a new standard in the industry. Try one of these new BloodGuard shirts for yourself. Blood washes right off with only water. No more bringing detergents or peroxide on the boat or dock to spare your favorite fishing shirt. Designed and tested in the field with real anglers, this new line of outdoor apparel is destined to set a new standard in the industry.

Living The T
he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Poncho: “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” Poncho is a new company that makes just one thing: a fishing shirt. We like that focus. Poncho calls their shirt “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” We’re impressed with the fast-drying fabric and innovative magnetic pocket flaps, which you can easily open with one hand. Smart details like a built-in eyeglass cleaner, slot to hang your sunglasses, roll-up sleeve tabs, and hidden zipper pocket will make anglers happy. They even go the extra mile by offering both relaxed and slim sizes. Poncho founder Clay Spencer grew up fishing the humid Texas coast. He’s also a former Alaskan fly fishing guide, so he knows a thing or two about extreme conditions. Clay said, “I made the Poncho shirt for guys who are serious about being comfortable on the water and don’t want a bunch of gimmicks. I cut the velcro, loops and baggy pockets. This shirt is made to have everything you need—and nothing you don’t.” Get a free hat with purchase of a shirt with code COASTALMAG. Gillz Apparel –
By Anglers For Anglers
G
illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor
O
ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. Join or follow the adventure, and learn how the foundation’s “Salt Supply” program is connecting saltwater-based vendors and guides with CF patients. For more information, see www.crossingforacure.com/ and www.facebook.com/CrossingForACure/.

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.
12
FLORIDA
CANGL_FL1-FL24.indd 12
MARCH 2019
Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. You’ll learn to navigate the site, identify wildlife and recognize indicators of dens for animals like octopuses. Sign up for an upcoming class by calling 561-8408750.

pring has sprung! In my opinion, March is one of the best months to fish in South Florida. Whether it’s inshore, offshore or freshwater, there are numerous ways to get hooked up. As water temperatures begin to warm up, tarpon will be plentiful along the beaches and around the inlets and bridges. Use live shrimp or crabs to get tight with a silver king. Offshore, there will be many different species to target. Kingfish will be showing up in bigger numbers. The sailfish bite will still be hot, especially right after a cold front pushes through. With lots of dolphin being caught over the last few months, there’s no reason that the trend won’t continue this month. Bigger blackfin tuna will be moving through our area as well. Drift a live pilchard on a 3/0 to 5/0 circle hook tied to 30 pound fluorocarbon leader and send it way out from the boat. Bottom fishing should be fantastic too with plenty of snappers on the reefs. On the wrecks, you can count on some big amberjacks and grouper, but you’ll have to release the grouper as the season is closed through April. In freshwater, the big female bass should begin to spawn. As water levels drop, bass will be pushed off the flats and into the canals making for some good numbers. March also means the return of the Dania Marine Flea Market March 14th - 17th at the Big Easy Casino in Hallandale. We will be there in booth space 105. Stop by to say hello and let’s talk some fishing! Keep reelin,

TIP of the Month More About Shrimp! Last month I touched on shrimp. This month, let’s get serious about shrimp. Shrimp migrate in and out of our South Florida inlets from November through April. The biggest are usually seen in January, but they are really late this year. As the shrimp move up and down the bays and through the inlets, they draw a lot of interest from predators. Drifting live shrimp under bridges can produce dozens of species on any evening. Floated near the surface, the action may come from tarpon, moonfish, ladyfish and assorted jacks. At mid levels the action leans toward sea trout and mackerel. Near the bottom the main attraction is snook and snappers. Special treats can include flounder and pompano as well as grouper. The inlets produce the same predators, but trout are less common. That’s no problem as trout are replaced by sheepshead and cobia. Once out in the open ocean big tarpon, mackerel, kingfish and a wide variety of jacks come into play. All species of snappers, grunts, hogfish and porgies are there for the taking. The list just doesn’t end. In very deep ocean, shrimp will produce tuna, tripletails and mahi. Even swordfish eat shrimp. Then there is the ultimate shrimp eater, the bonefish. Your trip will always be improved by starting with live shrimp. Almost all the fish mentioned will eat live shrimp. If casting any style of jig, a pea sized piece of a live shrimp will increase your action. For predators like tarpon and mackerel, a hook through the head of a live shrimp, while avoiding the dark spot which hosts all the vital organs will offer good swimming action. For bottom fish or bonefish, cut off the tail and thread your hook in the open tail and out the belly or back of the shrimp. If you want to be convinced on why to start with live shrimp instead of the frozen variety, then cut some shrimp up on a cutting board and observe the opaque blue blood that gels on the cutting board. One last thing. While bottom fishing or targeting bonefish, chop up a couple of shrimp periodically and throw the chunks into your fishing area. This will help bring the fish in for a closer look at your main offering. Capt. Bouncer Smith Bouncer’s Dusky 33 (305) 439-2475 www.CaptBouncer.com

retty soon we will be adjusting our clocks as we spring forward. Not only will we gain some extra daylight but the fishing will start ramp up in more ways than one. Sure, we will still be doing a lot of the same things we do during the winter but the number, size and variety of quality gamefish will slowly begin to increase. You can still expect a pretty good sailfish bite, but also expect some cobia, blackfin tuna, smoker kingfish, and monster amberjack to join the party. Most of these fish will fall prey to live baits drifted, slow trolled or flown off kites. Other fish will be caught while dropping near and around the countless artificial wrecks that line our coast. Exactly what you catch depends on several factors such as what’s running, how deep you're fishing and how your bait is presented. So what is the best way to target these fish? Drifting is a great way to catch sailfish, kings and tunas. Depths from 80 to 200 feet or so should be covered since the best depth fluctuates all of the time. Sails, tunas and mahi are usually found along the edge where greener, shallower water meets deeper blue water. Finding this color change usually leads you to a northbound current. Current is just as important as water quality and color. Another great technique and one that I really enjoy when conditions are right is anchoring. Dropping the hook up current on a wreck and deploying frozen and live chum will often get the attention of big spring kings and blackfin tuna. Besides drifting baits back, you can also present a
bait near the bottom for mutton snapper and or cobia. Both of these tasty species are available in the spring. Although not absolutely necessary, live chumming can often take this type of fishing to the next level. On days when conditions are less than ideal and none of the glamour species cooperate, you can easily change the game plan and target hard fighting amberjack,

aka reef donkeys. Most of the deeper wrecks with significant relief provide shelter to these powerful fish. The drill is pretty simple. Motor up current of the wreck and drop a medium to large bait near the bottom and hold on. Vertical jigs also work well if you don’t mind a little cardio. No matter how you choose to fish, one thing is certain. All of your gear, terminal tackle and
knots should be double checked if you plan on successfully landing some of these brutes. One of the reasons that spring is so exciting, is that you can easily hook into a fish of a lifetime. It isn’t uncommon to hear of someone hooking a big yellowfin, bluefin and blue or white marlin. All of these fish will find and exploit any weak link between you and the them. Inshore, tarpon will get a lot of attention and for obvious reasons. Silver kings fight hard, and put on quite a show most of the time. Although some are caught during daylight hours, the vast majority get fooled later in the day when the sun sets. Other inshore possibilities include snook, spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and various types of snapper. I always carry some inshore tackle on the boat for those blustery days when the seas are too rough to venture out safely. Over the years, I have found that for many, this is just as fun or even more fun than running offshore. If you’d like to get in on the action make sure you book your trip early. You can do so via email, call or even text message. WAlso, don’t forget that you can keep up with all of the action by following us on FACEBOOK, Instagram and Twitter. Scubadolly is the latest product from Southeast Coating and Fabrication in Pompano Beach. Dive enthusiast and company owner Paul Riccio thought “there has to be a better way to make lugging scuba tanks to and from the boat or in and out of the dive shop easier.” Carrying multiple tanks is cumbersome and heavy. After a thorough internet search and visits to local dive shops produced nothing, he decided to just make his own. What started out as a basic dolly for himself, has become the product you see here. A few local divers saw the Scubadolly and asked if they could buy one, as did a few local dive shops. Southeast Coating and Fabrication is now in full swing, building an array of mobile Scubadollys as well as boat mounted racks for 1 to 10 tanks. The Scubadolly is constructed of lightweight aluminum, weighs less than ten pounds and is powder coated in a variety of customer chosen colors. Durable non marking urethane wheels with sealed bearings make the Scubadolly roll with ease over a variety of terrain. Closed cell marine foam is used for padding and adjustable bungees secure the tanks firmly to the unit. It accommodates all sizes of popular tanks, including doubles with a manifold. It can be used standing up or laying down. It’s a great way to transport your tanks while keeping them from rolling around in your vehicle and is a great way to store your tanks at home. MSRP $299

got bit 10 seconds after my bait hit the water. Not the beast that Erin landed, but a respectable two pounder. We caught a few more smaller fish then moved on to the next stop. As we drove to the next spot, Russell shared how he finds these great fishing spots. Google Earth is an amazing tool. He uses it to find bridges and culverts that connect the canals and lakes and provide shade for the peacock bass to stage in an ambush position. Because all of the man made lakes and canals contain lots of flat, hard bottom structure, they make for perfect breeding grounds for peacock bass. Most of these bodies of water are connected in some way to the major canals that drain the water from heavy rains towards the ocean. This has allowed the peacock population to spread rapidly. At the next spot, the water was a bit dirty on both sides of the culvert because of the wind, but Erin showed amazing patience and hooked into a solid three pound peacock. We snapped a few photos and moved on. Within a few minutes, we were back at it and Russell and Erin were doubled up on peacocks. We caught and released a few more fish before deciding to see if we could find a few snakeheads before daylight ran out. The final spot of the day was near a pump station that feeds into the Middle River. Almost instantly, Erin caught a small largemouth bass which inhaled her live shiner. It was hooked to deep to remove the hook so we cut the line as close as we could and and released it. As Russell tied on another hook, I walked out to the Middle River to throw a few casts with my artificial topwater bait. With no luck, I walked back towards the pump station where Erin had a snakehead looking at her bait. It seemed the fish was a bit spooked and swam away, but Erin stuck it out for a few more minutes. Suddenly the drag was screaming and she was tight to the invasive fish. She landed the fish to complete her freshwater slam! With smiles all around, we called it a day and agreed that it was indeed an urban adventure.

hen I hear MARCH, I think of big tarpon in Miami. We target tarpon year round in South Florida, but this month is outstanding, averaging double digit shots a night. The tarpon we have been catching the past few weeks average from 50 to 150 pounds. March is great time to get on a stellar tarpon bite because cold fronts aren’t as consistent as the past two months. This allows time for the bay waters to warm a few degrees, which turns the bite on. I have been fishing Miami for many years and have noticed the best tarpon bite seems to be when water temps range from 71 to 76 degrees. When water temps fall below 70 degrees, tarpon are more lethargic and don’t seem to feed as aggressively. The best places to search for tarpon this month are along all the oceanside beaches, ocean inlets and inland bridges. When the sun is up, the best chance for a bite is to go look
forecastS for the migratory schools that are swimming their way south, along the beaches from Haulover Inlet to Key Biscayne. My plan of attack when targeting tarpon this month is to cruise about a quarter mile offshore of the beach and search for rolling fish. I always watch my sonar to see if I mark any passing schools of fish. Now, let’s talk about my tackle choice for catching and releasing the beautiful silver king. I like spinning outfits over conventional due to the fact I can make casts if need be when I see a fish roll or bust the water away from the boat. The spinning setups I use day in and day out are Penn Spinfisher 7500s spooled with 50 lb braid and a 7 foot, 15 to 30lb class rod, but any spinning setup in that size is perfect. For leader, I prefer fluorocarbon ranging from 40 to 80lb, depending on water clarity and aggressiveness of fish. In March, I like to carry a variety of different live baits such as crabs, big shrimp and try to always have a dozen or so live mullet in the livewell. For live

shrimp and crabs, there are many local bait shops that have perfect tarpon size baits. The biggest key to chasing tarpon is you never know what the fish are feeding on that day and it’s critical to be ready for everything. Tarpon are extremely temperamental and their appetite can change from day to day, depending on conditions and what species of bait shows up in the bay that day.
To be successful, you have to be prepared for all circumstances. Everyone be safe out there and enjoy the pristine inshore fishing of Miami and Biscayne Bay. Tightlines!

inter is in full swing now. For kayak anglers fishing offshore, March is one of the slowest months and hardest to get out weather wise. For the anglers that can get out on a nice day, they might be rewarded with some quality fish. I have caught some solid mahi mahi in the month of March. Typically, the strong east winds will blow in some nice 10 to 20 pounders in to the range of kayak anglers. Try fishing around the color change and look for some nice weed lines. Go offshore after a few days of some strong east winds and you will have a good shot of catching a nice mahi mahi in 180 to 250 feet of water. They might even be in shallower water as I have landed some 10 to 15 pounders in 80 to 120 feet this time of the year. With the moon and a decent bonito run happening, it could be worth going after some big
forecastS wahoo. Although scattered, there have been some big boys caught in the month of March. Try fishing on an outgoing tide at the mouth of the inlets, slow trolling a live gog on a downrigger. If you do not have a downrigger try using a 4 to 8 ounce egg sinker to get your bait deeper in the water column. You can also catch some bigger kingfish with the same tactic. The sailfish bite is still going strong with awesome bites after cold fronts. For targeting sailfish, try zig zagging in depths from 80 to 180 feet of water, slow trolling your baits. Once you hook up on a sailfish, stay at that depth and you most likely will have a shot at another one. For days that are too windy to get offshore, kayak anglers can try their luck at some beautiful peacock bass. For me personally, live shiners have always been the go to bait for catching a solid 4 to 5 pound peacock. The bite will be slow given that we are not in the summer months yet, but with the aggressive nature of these

he FLW and B.A.S.S. rules that tell us that in pro tournaments the distance between anglers is 150 feet between boats, but only with the trolling motor up and out of the water with the boat anchored or power-poled down does this rule apply. So when you’re bass fishing for fun or in a tournament, how close is too close to one another while fishing? A lot of times it's left to the discretion of the angler. However, both parties don't always seem to agree on what's right. How these situations are handled is important. If words are exchanged, the tone of your voice is everything. Remember, patience is huge in fishing and sometimes in resolving uncomfortable situations. While fishing, we should all be considerate of one another. After all, some of us put a lot of our time and resources into this sport and finding these spots. Always come off plane when approaching another angler. Come up quietly. Fish or Fiction? By Michael Walrath
N
A Siren’s Song
early hypnotized by the swirling school of massive tarpon feeding fifty yards off the beach, Scotty slid his kayak into the ocean. Entranced, as if lured by an invisible piper, he paddled through the swells toward them. As he approached, the violence of their feeding frenzy transformed into a rhythmic dance punctuated by acrobatic leaps and spins. He readied a cast and felt the warm buzzing in his chest which he was beginning to recognize not as nerves, but as his growing self-confidence. Only fifty feet from the circling school, his heart thundered in his ears, but his hands were steady. Scotty’s quickening pulse blended with the lapping waves and the muffled bass of a distant storm to create a musical score the most gifted of composers could not possibly improve upon. He laid out a perfectly straight cast, delivering his fly to the center of the turbulent mass of feeding tarpon. The water immediately trembled as the tight school of mullet cleared away from his fly before a massive head crashed through the surface and launched into the sky. The fly line lifted from the water like a kite string and the angelic fish seemed to float above him. Scotty instinctively bowed forward to ease the tension and after it crashed back into the water, he felt the hook slide around to the corner of the fish’s mouth then catch fast. He strip-set hard, to ensure the hook up. Preparing for the powerful run that would follow, he tightened the drag, hoping his knots would hold and the kayak itself would absorb some of the pressure. But even so,
the huge fish ripped line from the reel so powerfully, Scotty was sure he’d be stripped out. Into the backing in seconds, there seemed no hope the fleeing giant would slow in time. With almost a hundred yards of line out, Scotty desperately synched down the drag and squeezed his eyes shut. The line drew tight as a bow. With his rod doubled and line tight as piano string, the impossibility of this catch and the familiar fear of losing his prize crept in. The kayak lurched forward, slicing the water like a dog sled. A myriad of disappointing endings flashed through his mind. After a ten minute sleigh ride, the fish again launched into the air, this time violently shaking its head as it walked across the surface on its thrashing tail. Scotty bowed to it once more. The fish turned sharply to the north when it landed, the kayak stopped, and Scotty reeled to maintain pressure. He felt the tight line moan as it swept the arc of water between his idle kayak and the circling fish. As he prepared for the next test, Scotty’s focus returned, and his senses heightened. The rod vibrated in his hands and he felt the line bumping mullet as the fish circled north. The kayak soon swung around behind the fish and again drew forward as Scotty clutched the cork handle with both hands. His eyes were wide, but calm and his excitement became mindful enjoyment as the last of any fear of losing her melted away. The fish eventually turned east, heading for deeper water, and now pulled the kayak steadily. Scotty relinquished all control and resigned himself to following and enjoying every moment with her, rather than fighting
for control. The kayak plodded east. When it finally began to slow, he realized he would soon be united with the magical creature he was so eagerly following out to sea. He could feel her rolling and laying up, exhausted. The fight had lasted forty minutes and Scotty’s wrists, neck and shoulders ached. He slowly regained his backing and then his fly line until he saw her submissively wallowing on the surface ahead. Though he’d cherished every second of the chase, Scotty’s heart raced at the thought of landing what was easily a hundred pound tarpon, on fly. As he brought the fish alongside his kayak, Scotty gasped at her surreal beauty. He silently offered thanks for the strength and confidence it took to find, fight and land this fish of a lifetime. The pure beauty of the moment seared into his mind and her inky black eyes seemed to stare deeply into his. Scotty knew she was the embodiment of his newfound strength. Never had all his energy known such balance. Never had he been so invigorated, nor happy to be alive. He pulled the silvery mermaid up onto his lap. He ran his hand over her saucersized silver scales, as smooth and cool as glazed ceramic, before popping the hook and sliding her back into the sea. Scotty held the base of her tail with both hands and gently rocked her forward and back, to revive her. As the seawater flushed across her gills, the exhausted warrior began to twitch and with a sudden burst of strength, she was gone. Scotty sat motionless, closed his eyes and smiled as the soft song of the Sirens gradually faded.

CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND
MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton
T
he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.
Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. This report barely scratches the surface of the blistering-hot action in Nosara. Remember, you can always check the FishingNosara Blog for daily catch updates. If you have been reading this report for a while and waiting for the right time to visit, stop wishing and come fishing! Call FishingNosara at 904-591-2161 or email craig@ fishingnosara.com.

H
ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. IS THERE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE?
ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. The number of lionfish you noted with ulcers 3. A photograph of what you saw, if possible

ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. As an angler growing up in this day 1:14 of age, to realize Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 PM I’ve Pagecome 1

how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. Cory Gurman is a sophomore at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Besides reveling in the great outdoors, Cory enjoys spending time with his three golden retrievers and rooting for the Atlanta Braves. Follow him on Instagram @fishhunter1119.

r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter
I
f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.

Baja’s Inshore Action
On The East Cape
By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.
J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
