all is weather is starting to push in come cold fronts. What effects will the former storm Hurricane Matthew have on Central Florida this season? Let’s move this elephant out of the room. The hurricane did not stop the summer shrimp run in Northeast Florida where they were in the crickets. Full pulls were reported within 48 hours of the storm. There has been a sewage warning issued, 7 million gallons of sewage spewed into the St. John River. Despite the Hurricane devastation up and down the coast, the hunt for the bugs continued. The majority were found in Captains Lee Noga & Grayson Padrick fill some alligator tags Welatka post storm. in Brevard County . Titusville was reporting white summer shrimp among the cast netting folks. We have had winter seasons start as early as November in the Oak Hill area in past years. No doubt our snowbirds will be out scouting this season as well. Typically, they are small size in November but they will grow 2 inches a month. Boaters start to scout Oak Hill around the last moon event in December. We have had some years where the first full pulls came out of Brevard County in December. Last year we did not get full pulls reported till February. But, we know the Titusville pier will give home to December hopefuls. The concern among many shrimpers is what impact did Hurricane Matthew have on our Central Florida winter run forthcoming. In 2004, we were hit with 3 hurricanes and it killed the following winter season. I do not believe this will be the case this season. The eye of the Hurricane glanced Ponce Inlet changing the winds to the West taking the storm surge out to sea. I believe this is what we will attribute saving our shrimping season. Don’t be surprised when you catch large to jumbo size white shrimp in Brevard this winter. This is the month to scout but don’t get discouraged if you do not get much action. The season does not go full swing until late January or so. Remember, mono-filament box and frame nets are illegal to use with monofilament. You must change the netting to polypropylene, nylon, cotton or linen. FWC did not issue tickets last season because it was the year of education. We have not gotten word if they will be enforcing this frame net law this season. Dial into the daily intel for the entire State of Florida on Facebook (Florida Shrimping Academy – Tips & Tricks). New computer shrimping lights are on the market (Marker69.com). Make sure you get your 2017 Merritt Island permit, download it, and its free.
