Vibe obviously put a lot of thought into their new fishing kayak. By combining features kayak anglers customarily had to choose one over the other, the Shearwater 125 is the most versatile fishing kayak on the water. This streamlined fishing vessel has an open deck as well as center-console storage. It’s comfortable and stable with a high-low seat, a standing perch and ample floor standing room. Rudder steering is pedal and hand controlled. It can be rigged for paddle, pedal and motor power with Power Pole mounts. There is open bow storage for easy access as well as hull rigging access. Four flush rod holders are complemented by four horizontal rod holders. It’s got a tunnel hull and a keel for maximum stability and speed. And all of that is just the beginning of a long list of well-designed features. With innovation that provides all of the functionality anglers look for in a kayak, Vibe’s Shearwater 125 begs the question, “Why choose when you can have it all?”

Bixpy Kayak Outboard Kit Looking to extend your range and save energy for fishing? The Bixpy Thruster is an electric outboard motor designed to fit any kayak or other small boat. It reaches speeds of up to 7 mph, opening up a whole world of opportunity for folks who fish from small boats. This extremely powerful, efficient, light and portable propulsion system helps you fight wind and current, explore new places and extend trips. A single charge allows for up to 10 hours at trolling speed, and at full speed it will push a kayak to about 7 mph for up to 75 minutes of continuous use. The Bixpy Outboard Kit, which includes a thruster and an outboard Power Pack is emission-free, weighs only 9 pounds and is easy to mount, operate and transport. All components are waterproof and safe for fresh and saltwater use. This little outboard turns your kayak into a micro-skiff, allowing you to go farther and faster, wherever the fish are.

My Coast Outdoors Knockin Tail My Coast Outdoors, the Houston-based lure maker that brought us its innovative Controlled Descent line of soft plastics, has released another one-of-a-kind lure to the industry. The Knockin Tail paddletail swimbait made its debut at ICAST 2019, and it raised eyebrows with a unique design that’s proven to stimulate feeding behavior in fresh and saltwater fish.

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

2019 HOTTEST NEW FISHING GEAR Every angler knows the benefits of sound and vibration paired with visual stimulation to convince fish to feed. With the Knockin Tail, there’s a rattle built into the tail. Not only does this eliminate the need to purchase or insert rattles, it outperforms traditional noisemakers, which only produce sound when the rod is twitched. This lure puts out a continuous fish-attracting sound with every flutter of the tail. Whether it’s twitched, bounced, on the fall or with a steady retrieve, the Knockin Tail rattles to stimulate the lateral line. Beneath that innovation, Knockin Tail is also a carefully designed soft plastic that’s as durable as it is action packed.

Nauticus EZ BOARD

With its EZ BOARD removable boat boarding assist handle, Nauticus designed a simple solution for those of us not blessed with the agility of a spider monkey. Made of strong and durable, corrosion and UV resistant PVC, the EZ BOARD is the handhold you need to safely and easily board the boat. It slides right into most flush-mounted rod holders, which makes it as convenient as it is helpful. When it’s time to board, insert the EZ BOARD into the rod holder and twist to lock it. When everyone is safely aboard, slide it back out of the rod holder and stow it. It can be oriented while on the water to provide a handhold for boarding or disembarking from either a dock or the swim platform, depending on where it’s needed. Made in the USA, the EZ BOARD is lightweight, requires no special tools and comes with a five-year replacement warranty. It is available in 36” and 48” models, and there’s even a 24” model to help with getting in or out of a kayak.

LIVETARGET Flutter Sardine With its new Injected Core Technology, LIVETARGET hauled in the hardware at ICAST 2019, winning three best of category awards. The idea behind these lures is to show a realistic baitfish profile to fish, while hiding the unnatural mechanical elements that give lures their action. The ICT Flutter Sardine has the enticing twitch and falling action of a standard jigging spoon, but its exceptionally realistic profile sets it apart from everything else on the market. Injected Core Technology enables a lifelike sardine profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature flutter action. Perfect for a host of saltwater fishing applications with a saltwater-grade hook, it’s available in five weights and six colors.

This vehicle-mounted rod storage solution allows anyone from recreational anglers to professionals to arrive at their fishing destination with baitcast, spinning and spincast rods and reels intact, fully-rigged and ready to fish. Two aircraft grade anodized aluminum tubes hold up to six fully rigged casting or spinning rods up to eight feet in length, and a locking reel housing area easily fits most baitcasting and small to medium spinning reels. Protective polypropylene liners inside the Rod Vault eliminate rod on metal contact, protecting guides and rod tips from abrasion. A large entry tube accommodates initial line guides up to 2.5 inches out to 40 inches from the base of the rod. It’s perfect for rigs deisgned for bass, inshore and other warmwater fishing. Included mounting brackets secure the Rod Vault ST to the top of any vehicle with rooftop crossbars and are built to accommodate almost any factory or aftermarket crossbar design, including aero and square tubes up to 3.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick. An innovative t-slot mounting design and movable tube clamps provide flexible options to fit most vehicles. The Rod Vault ST was specifically over-engineered to keep valuable equipment safe in almost any circumstance. Stainless steel hardware ensures the Rod Vault ST will remain rust free no matter the fishing environment, and fiberglass-infused nylon construction protects the reel housing, mounting hardware and aerodynamic nose cone from UV degradation. Whether storing rods to fish before or after work or traveling across the country on an epic fishing trip, the Rod Vault ST is deisgned to keep gear safe.

Soft Steel USA Fluoro-Stretch Line Soft Steel USA has come up with a fishing line that might finally end the perennial debate over monofilament vs. fluorocarbon. With its new stretchable fluorocarbon, Soft Steel USA found the meeting point that provides the benefits of both fluoro and mono. It’s a real game changer. Soft Steel’s new Fluoro-Stretch line is a 100 percent fluorocarbon line with the stretchable properties of monofilament. It has the abrasion resistance, low visibility, sensitivity and toughness of fluoro as well as the tighter knots and shock absorption of monofilament. Tight knots have always been an issue with fluorocarbon, especially when it comes to line-to-line knots. The new Fluoro-Stretch allows for a tighter cinch, which elevates knot strength to 95%, which is much stronger than standard fluorocarbon lines. Available in breaking strengths of 10 to 150 pounds, the new FluoroStretch will be available in 25-yard spools and coils as well as 5-yard single-shot lengths.

t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

FLY BY NIGHT

I

By Will Schmidt

made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.

When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. Will Schmidt is a seasoned tournament angler and has been writing about fishing for more than two decades.

FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES

By CAM Staff. Pictured Charles Cassino

S

calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”

2

FLORIDA

I

SEPTEMBER 2019

I

The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. Coastal Angler Magazine offers special thanks to Experience Florida’s Sports Coast along with local charter captains, Mermaid Slayers, Captain Mark Dillingham and Florida Backwater Charters for their gracious invitation and superb hospitality in helping us experience all that Pasco County has to offer the saltwater enthusiast. For more information on Florida’s Sports Coast, or to plan your 2020 scalloping adventure visit www.flsportscoast.com.

GAUGESAVER RESTORES SUN-FADED EQUIPMENT

Do the sun-damaged gauges on your boat make it difficult to see how much fuel is left? Restore those LCD gauges instead of shelling out hundreds of bucks to replace them. COST: If you’re a budget boater, repairing versus replacing is a no-brainer. Gauges can be restored to like-new condition for a quarter of the price of replacement. AVAILABILITY: Suzuki/ iCommand/LMF 400 gauges are really hard, if not impossible, to find. Have an early Mercury Optimax and wonder how you’ll find replacements for those SmartCraft gauges? ORANGE LAKE PRODUCING

In May, Brian Hammett, of Ocala, caught and released a 15-pound, 13-ounce monster from Orange Lake that is the second heaviest fish ever documented in FWC’s TrophyCatch program. Then, on July 27, Chad Dorland caught a 13-pound, 5-ounce largemouth that also garnered Hall of Fame status in the state’s big-bass program. Those two fish are highlights of a great season on the lake. TrophyCatch-approved bass must weigh heavier than 8 pounds and be documented by photo or video of the entire fish and its weight on a scale before being released. Nine other Orange Lake largemouths have been approved by TrophyCatch since Hammett caught his fish, and there’s no telling how many undocumented lunkers have been caught. To date during Season 7, 21 TrophyCatch bass weighing at least 8 pounds caught and released in Orange Lake have been approved in the program, including eight bass weighing more than 10 pounds. Dorland’s 13-pounder was caught during a University of Florida fishing tournament. The open tournament hosted 23 teams and four fish were caught that weighed over 8 pounds. Dorland and his teammate, Dusty McDevit, took fourth place overall in the tournament with a 21.26-pound bag. “That day, it was all either little fish or absolute monsters being caught,” said Dorland. “I was flipping hydrilla with artificial bait and was thrilled to catch my personal best during the tournament. “The fishing on Orange Lake is better than it has ever been before,” Dorland continued. “People are catching big fish all over the lake, not just in one specific spot, and that’s because of the success of FWC’s lake management.” Management activities are discussed at public meetings twice a year and have included vegetation shredding, tussock harvesting and invasive plant control. These management activities not only enhance habitat for fish but for othPictured with his son holding another big bass, Brian Hammett er species, such as wading birds. alker’s Cay National Park is one of six parks in the Abaco Park System. It was established in 2002 and is just a 15-minute boat ride from Grand Cay, Abaco. It is the northern-most park in the Bahamian National Park system. In 1995, a proposal for creation of a protected area at Walker’s Cay was submitted by the Walker’s Cay Hotel and Marina to Bahamas National Trust. This proposal was supported by many residents and stakeholders from Grand Cay, including fishermen and the local Board of Works. The goal was to protect the reefs near Walker’s Cay, as stakeholders recognized the importance of these reefs to the economic viability of the dive and fishing industries on Walker’s, Little Grand and Grand cays. In 2002, after several consultations with local communities, the park lease was signed to protect 5,800 acres of coral formations and the surrounding marine environment. The Walker’s Cay area is a popular snorkeling and dive spot, particularly used for shark diving and frequented by island visitors. Additionally, the area serves as a site for game fishing and traditional reef and flats fishing. Walker’s Cay is fringed by its own barrier reef. The stunning coral formations and surrounding marine environment host schools of pompano and amberjack as well as large marine predators—like sharks and barracudas—a multitude of colorful tropical fish, marine turtles and eagle rays. Renowned for underwater cathedrals teeming with fish, visibility reaches 100 feet with an endless variety of marine life.

new boat ramp is in the works for Headwaters Lake at Fellsmere Water Management Area (FWMA) in western Indian River County. The long-awaited facilities will provide greater access to the 10,000-acre reservoir Photo courtesy that has already become a of Paul MacInnis favorite big-bass fishery for kayakers. The St. Johns River Water Management District recently awarded a construction contract for the ramp and other visitor amenities. This comes following the award of a 50-percent funding match for the $842,000 project from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “The Headwaters Lake boat ramp will be the final piece that elevates this area to a premiere recreation destination for the entire region,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Governing Board Member Doug Bournique. “FWC has been a tremendous partner in helping make this possible for the benefit of our residents and visitors for years to come.” The project includes construction of an improved parking area, restrooms and a floating dock along with the boat ramp. The Fellsmere Water Management Area and its multi-function reservoirs serve water supply and flood control purposes and help improve the water quality of agricultural and surface water drainage. Additionally, the area offers opportunities for public recreation. Already kayakers are taking advantage of the north reservoir, and because of FWC’s habitat improvement work, the FWMA is quickly becoming an attractive destination for anglers.

eptember is here……..THANK GOODNESS. With the kiddos back in school, and mullet moving in to our area, this can be a great time of year. Although it is very much still sweltering, anglers around the state will start to look towards fall patterns and dream of 68-72 degree days. The fall mullet migration is a big enough deal around here that we start talking about it months before it happens. I like to take September and really dial in all of my gear for Inlet fishing that I will surely be using in the month’s to come. Here at Coastal Angler Daytona we are getting ready to start a new video series. Stay tuned to our social media channels to see several “Local Captain Spotlight” videos where we let a local guide show us just

how it’s done here in our waters. I am very excited to see what we catch! It is hard to talk about September without talking about my all time favorite fish, SNOOK!!!! Snook season is here and I am excited to be able to take a select few to the dinner table. They can be quite elusive, but that is part of what makes fishing for them so spectacular. I can remember the first day I fell in love with this species. I was fishing below the Tomoka bridge with a red and white Yo-Zuri and the snook lept into the air, and spit the lure. The lure landed right at my feet. I had never seen a fish do that before. From then on, I was on the hunt. Tight lines The Chibbaro Family

ith the sweltering summer heat starting to ease a little, we will all enjoy a little more time on the water. The later weeks will show the start of our very much anticipated mullet run. As the mullet run begins the surf and the inlets will be on fire with big bull reds and some really healthy snook!!! Speaking of snook, welcome back to snook season which starts the 1st of the month. We have been seeing a very healthy population of snook up around Highbridge. Most of what we’ve seen are juveniles, but there have been quite a few studs being reported. Tarpon are around in much better numbers now as well. It seems to be able to get these silver kings to bite, the smaller the bait the better. Same is holding true for the snook and redfish. Throwing a small paddle tail, Skitter Walk, or even a Mini MirrorDine seem to be doing the trick. If you decide to use a skitter walk or something of that nature be sure to use it early as the topwater bite will shut down fairly quickly. For the live bait folks out there, mullet are in plentiful supply so get out your cast net and load up your live well. With the kids back in school and the house back to normal, hopefully you will find the time you need to get out to your favorite fishing hole. So, until next time, keep your lines wet and your rods bent!!!

FISHING REPORT & FORECAST CAPT. MICHAEL SAVEDOW

Edgewater Backcountry and Mosquito Lagoon

T

he long awaited first day of fall arrives this month after a long Florida summer, the first fishy change of the season is the start of the mullet run. Most of the migrating baitfish stay in the ocean along the beach and near the inlet, but some of the schools come inside and travel along the intracoastal waterway on their journey south. The schools are then followed by inshore migratory game fish, cast net mullet for bait, use larger ones for Bull Redfish, Tarpon, Sharks and bigger Snook, finger size for Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Spanish Mackerel, as well as resident fish like Flounder, Trout, Mangrove Snapper, slot size Reds and Snook. Free line baits on the surface or fish them deeper with a small weight under the bait schools, try mullet live, fresh dead, or cut. Lure and fly fishermen can have good action with top water or subsurface lures which imitate mullet. Snook season opens September 1, bag limit is 1 per person, slot size limit is 28” to 32” overall length, a Snook permit on your fishing license required to keep one. Best places to target Snook in our area can be Spruce Creek, Tomoka area, Ponce Inlet jetty’s, ICW bridges and docks, Haulover Canal. I also have had luck in the Edgewater Backcountry try mangrove & oyster shorelines and points with deeper drop-offs and flowing current. Use a larger bait or lure to target keeper size lineside, try live mullet, pinfish, pigfish, croakers or large shrimp, for artificials use swimming type plugs for surface action or jigs for fishing deep. Fall can have of the best action of the year at Ponce de Leon Inlet, known as Mosquito Inlet before 1927, main attraction are big spawning Redfish also Snook and Tarpon, drifting the inlet channel and its western

entrance is the most popular technique. You should also be free lining whole or half blue crabs, live pinfish, pigfish or mullet, outgoing tide can be the best choice most days. Use heavy enough tackle to land the big Reds quicker not to stress them any more than necessary by an extended fight with light tackle. Best way to photograph your trophy red is to hold them horizontal do not hang them vertically by the jaw with a fish grip and return them to the water as fast as possible. If you want to know the weight of your big red or any large fish, measure the length and girth with the fish in the water, then calculate the approx. weight using the formula, length times girth squared divided by 800. Late summer patterns will continue for a while longer on Mosquito Lagoon for Seatrout. Early morning you should be using top water lures and weed less soft plastic jerk baits over shallow grass, mixed bottom, and near mullet schools. After the sun is up, live pigfish or croakers freelined on drop offs, in holes and sloughs near mullet schools. For lagoon Redfish stay shallow, on mixed bottom, grass edges, and sand pockets with soft plastics, select shrimp, live finger mullet or cut bait. Nighttime dock light fishing will continue to be good, fall migratory fish arriving will also be feeding on baitfish and shrimp attracted to the lights. There will be Snook, Trout, Jacks, Bluefish, and Ladyfish can be thick at the right lights, fish moving tides especially outgoing for the best action. Tomoka Report

S

eptember is a great month to fish with the advent of cooler water, which makes the fish more active throughout the day. In addition to the cooler weather, it is the beginning of the mullet run which attracts reds, snook and tarpon among others. This has been a good year for snook, and I expect the months of September and October to be even greater. During high tide, fish tight against the grass banks with a popping cork and shrimp or mullet. A popper such as the 3 D inshore Yo-Zuri and the Z-Man chatter bait with a Diezel paddle tail works great. The red fish will be chasing schools of mullet and hanging around structure waiting for prey to pass by. The popping cork with a shrimp drifting with the tide works well or free line mullet. Sub surface lures work are another great option. Fish the mouths of the canals on an outgoing tide for best results. As for tarpon, early in the morning before the sun gets too high the tarpon will be surfacing. They will be after bait fish and crabs. I free line live mullet and crabs and trail a mullet under a balloon. I like throwing a six-inch surface lure at the tarpon when they are surfacing. Don’t get frustrated, the tarpon have a tendency to not eat no matter what you present to them.

for inshore / nearshore fishing in the area! With summer coming to an end, and the fall mullet run coming to a start, things will still be heating up. At the inlet big schools of jacks and rolling tarpon will be feeding aggressively, plugs or live bait free lined can ensure a hook up. I’ve even got a few permit mixed in the past few years. If the surface isn’t working drop a few baits on the bottom, as the red bight will be turning on with the start of the fall cold front patterns from the north. Trout will be chewing as well, I have my best luck in the fall around docks in the late afternoon or evening with light weight, long leader, and live shrimp. The pompano should also be eating in the Halifax. Pompano jigs on the edge of a channel with moving water, or even your standard double hooked pompano rig with some clam flavored fish bites and a piece of shrimp are my favorite. Oh yeah, I almost forgot (not really) snook season is here!!!! All I’m going to say here is put your time in, use fluorocarbon, and be patient … it will certainly pay off! FISHING REPORT & FORECAST CAPT. BRYN RAWLINS

Central St. Johns River

S

eptember is still dog days of summer for us on the great St. Johns River. You can get your limit by fishing early, late and fishing smart. It is important to start your fishing trip very early. Your first three hours of daylight will usually be the most productive. Also, with water temperatures ranging in the eighties, fish don’t move as fast as normal. So, slow your retrieve down – be more patient. For bass, start shallow early and then finish in deeper water as the temperature rises. Spinner baits, ¼ oz to 3/8 oz size with Colorado and willow leaf blades in white or chartreuse color or a combination of both and top water plugs. Try a Devils Horse, in spotted ape or frog pattern and fish spatter dock lily pads and stick ups and tree tops in the shallow water areas and backwaters of the St. Johns River and area lakes. Live bait like wild river shiners are always productive this time of year. Fish your shiner under a bobber 2-3 feet in depth. We are also seeing real good catches of warmouth and bluegill coming in recently. For warmouth Perch, throw a dark colored beetle spin near treetops and lily pads and shoreline cover in backwater creeks. Or swing a minnow with a pole and sliding bobber near cover. Some good areas are Harry’s Creek, Eph Creek and south Norris Dead River. Accarde Tackle makes a 211 Bream Killer with a #6 hook that works great on a fly rod. Black, chartreuse, and yellow are the best colors. They have long rubber “legs” that are very attractive to panfish. Even if you don’t have a fly rod, rig a 14-foot cane pole with 16 feet of 10 pound mono and “sling” the killer to the edge of the bank and pop it back slowly. The action is exciting. Capt. Fishing: A Passion and A Way of Life

A

s most of you know I am lady angler from Edgewater Florida, I have grown and spent most of my time wetting lines on the shores of mosquito lagoon and the back country of the Tomoka Basin! Ever since I was just a little girl I gravitated to the water and developed a deep Passion for fishing. What most of you don’t know is my obsession for fishing started in FRESH WATER with my father! I grew up hunting gator and Bass fishing freshwater rivers, lakes and ponds anywhere there is water I’d be casting a line. Fishing is much more than a Passion for me it is a way of life I make time daily to make that cast! Largemouth bass are unique because no matter where you live there will be a place close by on any given autumn day that you can catch them. Freshwater lakes both public and private have bass and are excellent places to catch them. Rivers and streams also hold Florida bass. These places sometimes are heavily fished. But what a lot of fishermen over-look are all the other bodies of water – either man-made or natural -- that hold plenty of Florida Sunshine Bass. The good part about bass fishing in the fall is their breeding time is over and the only thing on their minds is searching for their next meal. Bass will start feeding up in a big way, fattening themselves up once again for what promises to be yet another great spawning season. It’s crazy where you can catch them. Where you landed them in the morning you will not find then in the evening! Bass are more likely to feed when the water is cooler, so it is recommended to hit the water in the early morning. Looking to hook up on a largemouth bass!?? Try to cast rapid moving lures like spinner baits, crank baits and buzz baits to locate where the

active bass are hiding. Some other ways to catch large mouths are with wild shiners, but there is nothing like a surface explosion. Rubber worms and top water frogs are also blast!! Either way it depends on the weather and what they feel like eating that day! So same as Salt, doesn’t hurt to have live and artificial, just be prepared you never know what they are biting! A key to making the most of opportunities is being

Jake and Lena mother and father #inlaws. prepared to make quick lure changes. I always have a variety of lures ready to go that will cover the whole water column, from repeaters to bottom structure-fishing baits. I try to be prepared to change to other baits because the reputation of fish in September and Remember to focus on the fishing hooks with vegetation around as Bass enjoy being on the bottom with heavy cover.

Bring On the Fall Weather

S

eptember is here and we love it. You will find a little more variety as some of the summer patterns are still hanging around, but towards the end of the month you may see some fall target species move into the area. As usual, that will depend on water temps and bait migrations so keep your eyes peeled for changes. The bottom will still be holding snappers of all types, triggerfish, and you may even see a few sea bass being brought up in September. All of your standard baits will work, and for rigging I like a basic chicken rig for fall bottom fishing. However, I still keep a larger setup with a livey on hand just in case I think there is a big grouper down there. If you haven’t made the long run for tuna yet this year, you are running out of time for the peak season. September can be a very productive time of year for those who are willing to make the trek to the grounds.

Lure Review . . . 386 Lures

T

his month we had the pleasure of testing 386 Lures soft plastic baits. We tested everything from their shrimp, paddletail, and fluke, all the way to their rubber worms for freshwater. Here is what we found. The first thing that stuck out was how durable they appeared. When I first received the packages I tested the durability the best way I know how, I handed them to my 4 and 6 year old daughters. We all pulled, bent, and even bit a few of them. Aside from the biting them, we also fished the heck out of these things. I caught multiple mangrove snappers, and even some toothy bluefish on these lures and I am happy to report they took a beating just as well as some of the big names out there. My favorite two lures were the fluke, and the rubber worm. The worm had the fall rate that I desired and I really liked the shiny flake

in them. I had also learned that you can customize your colors and flake by ordering them through the Instagram account. If you are a soft plastic fan, I highly suggest hooking up with a great local company that will surely be one of the upcoming players in the soft plastic market.

Fall Mullet Run

T

he smell of autumn, the change of colors, leaves falling at your feet, a cool breeze in the air. yes it is that time of the year that all us anglers wait for, the mullet run! Every fall in Florida as the temperatures begin to cool fishing is on fire. The fall temps trigger the natural instincts in mullet to head south along the Atlantic coast. These migrating mullet will stay in large schools that are irresistible to large predators that’s including most game fish.

About Mullet

Mullet are a silver/grey fish. They are a ray finned fish found worldwide in a coastal temperature and tropical waters. There are 80 species of mullet, can you believe that?! They can be found in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters around the world. The massive amounts of mullet that are found in the surf and intercoastal water ways during the fall mullet run send fish into a frenzy. Masses of inshore fish such as Snook, Tarpon, Redfish and Seatrout. Hooking up to fish is nearly nonstop!

How To Fish The Mullet Run

This is really a no brainer and just about anyone could land fish during the mullet run. As for myself, I follow the schools of mullet casting on the outsides of the schools hooking up and landing nearly every cast. I find that casting in the middle of the school is less successful because predators will often wait to pick off any fish that swims away from the school. It is that simple!

Mullet Is The Bait!

During the fall mullet run, mullet is the bait to use during this time of the year. Full grown mullet are great for shark and tarpon fishing. I prefer to use finger-sized mullet, free lined, which lands me just about anything. When targeting bull reds, large Snook and tarpon, I up my liter to 80lb+. But for the most part this Lagoon Mermaid enjoys sight fishing and scouting Mosquito Lagoon and although I can target large Tarpon, bull reds and Snook, I will be freelining finger sized mullet, enjoying the art of angling artificials and sticking to light tackle. Occasionally targeting what the mullet run has to offer, so what are you waiting for, get out there and fish!

APPAREL REVIEW

Bob Marlin Gear

Love For Fishing with the masses. I first met the crew at ICAST this year and what made me stop at their booth at first was just how good looking their performance shirts are. They caught my eye because they were different than all the other apparel companies at the show. Once I stepped into the booth and put my hands on their gear, I was instantly hooked. The performance shirts were super lightweight, vented and some of the highest quality I had seen at the show. Their “Smoke” series were a little heavier and had a nice stretch to them that you need when reaching over the gunwale to grab a fish.

Now let’s get down to business.

T

his month we did some product testing with the relatively new apparel company Bob Marlin Gear. For this review we tested several products and did our best to destroy them. Spoiler alert…we couldn’t!!! Bob Marlin Gear sent us 2 performance shirts, a pair of board shorts, and a face buff to test out. But before we get into the results, let’s learn a bit about the company. The Bob Marlin brand was created so that fishermen around the world can pursue their passion in style and comfort while offering the highest protection and quality standards in fishing apparel. Made by fishermen, for fishermen, Bob Marlin wants to share their One 12 DAYTONA/NEW SMYRNA/DELAND

How did the products fair in our testing. First we go to the boardshort. When I first tried them on I fell in love. Not only did they look good enough to wear out on the town, but I loved the pocket placement. So often with board shorts we are missing places to put the daily necessities in one small rear or side pocket, Bob Marlin has remedied that. Aside from the pockets, the shorts dried fast, were of great quality, the waistband was comfortable, and they looked great. Two thumbs way up from me. As for the performance shirt, simply put it is my new favorite shirt in my closet. Even after the product testing trips, I find myself reaching

for my Bob Marlin Gear before anything else I own. Being here in Central FL in the heat of the summer, sun protection is key, but so is the weight of the garment. My two favorite performance related parts (the designs are still my favorite) of this shirt is the lightweight and the side vents! With the vented sides I found myself sweating a whole lot less than normal here in the Florida summer heat. If I had a 3rd thumb, I would give this shirt 3 thumbs up as it really blew me away with its comfort and durability.

September Surf Update

W

ell, the long, hot days of summer will be coming to an end in the next month or so, at least they’re supposed to. To be honest it’s been a hot, but good year for fishing here at the beach. Most of us here in Central Florida could use a nice break in the weather, as it’s been very humid, and the rain has been a daily constant. The good news is people are still catching some nice fish! For the most part lately in the surf there has been a lot of whiting, as well as a few sand perch and croaker. The news, as of late, is that anytime now the black drum and bull red fish will be around very soon and that makes for some real fun. It seems the best results have been using shrimp, clams and cut bait. Also, fish bites have done well and there is still some pompano out there that just love those things. If you can find sand fleas, they are always good to use although they seem a little smaller right now. Of course, this time of year there are all types of sharks around and with Shark Week just ending, I’m thinking that maybe someone will catch something to brag about. I know a few of my readers have been writing in saying that this is the year for a record shark. Lately it’s been shovel head, black tip, and the occasional spinner being caught. The tarpon are just making their way out into the surf too. They love to munch on fresh mullet or crabs and can be really challenging to catch. Always remember to “bow to the king” If you happen to hook up with one. They tend to jump when hooked and have tough mouths and can easily throw off your hook. Try leaving some slack in your line by lowering your pole when you see them leap out of the water. Thus, bowing to the king. It might just help you land a big on. With football season starting, it’s going to a lot less crowded on the water. The diehard anglers will be out there early and will still be able to catch the 1pm game. But for the most part this time of year, it’s much easier to get in and out of the marinas. Of course, school is also starting so weekdays are a perfect time to get out and catch some fish on the beach. I hope everyone has had a great and fun summer out there enjoying the water and what Mother Nature has to offer us. We are lucky to have such a wonderful place to live and fish in here at the beach of SE Volusia County.

The research was painstaking, and the researchers gratefully recognize fishermen’s help. Most recently, researcher Steve Poland, who represents the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Division at the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC), spent three years working with charter fishermen, commercial fishermen and tournament directors sampling stomach contents to identify preferred prey. In 2010, a North Carolina State University team, led by Dr. Paul Rudershausen, published findings after 10 years of sampling from the week-long Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. Both studies came to similar conclusions—bullet and frigate mackerel are far too important to be left unmanaged. Bullet mackerel occur from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. Frigate mackerel mostly occur from North Carolina through Florida. Though a few years back the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council placed protections on a number of forage fish species, bullet and frigate mackerel remained unmanaged, and are vulnerable to industrial fishing as crab/lobster bait, animal food and for human consumption. There are no seasons or limits on either species. That’s concerning, since demand for forage fish is increasing. Fortunately, there’s a provision in the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act (MSA) and associated National Standards that allows protections for forage fish as “ecosystem component species,” if there’s a clear trophic (foodweb) connection to a managed predator. When the researchers made the connection between wahoo and the small mackerels, they provided the SAFMC with justification to manage those two species as “ecosystem components” of the Dolphin/Wahoo Fishery Management plan. In June, the SAFMC voted to develop an amendment that may include protective regulatory actions. Fishermen of all stripes publicly supported the decision, and it’s important we stay engaged in the process. The regulations must ensure we leave plenty of bullet and frigate mackerel in the water for some of the world’s fastest predators to eat. • Up to 3.2 feet • Body covered in scales; larger scales below striped area • Sharp teeth Small space between 1st & 2nd dorsal fins

DEXTER: THE PERFECT KNIFE;

TWO CENTURIES IN THE MAKING

In October, Dexter will release its new EDGE GUARD blade guard, which is specifically designed to protect the blades of Dexter knives.

N

ext time you’re on a charter boat, notice the knife the captain uses to cut bait. When you’re on the docks, stop at the cleaning table to see what the mates use to fillet fish. Chances are you’ll see the pros using Dexter knives. The iconic white handle is a dead giveaway. Dexter has been making purpose-built knives for more than 200 years. Steeped in the traditions of New England and its historic fisheries, the Southbridge, Massachusetts company produces American-made quality that is legendary among those who rely on Capt. Steve Nagy, who guides their equipment to make a living. For more than two centuries, Dex- out of Bonita Springs, Fla., uses Dexter knives daily and ter has created solid tools that perform considers them the perfect their intended functions better than knives for the job. anything else on the market. There’s no need to rely on flashy looks or gimmicks when the knife you offer is simply the best. “Dexter might not be glitzy like some products out there on the market today,” said Dexter National Sales Manager Carl Abissi. “Dexter knives are designed to perform. They have stood the test of time. They are the choice of charter captains and commercial fishermen. If you want a knife that performs like a charter captain’s, you choose a Dexter.” DEXSTEEL, the proprietary steel used in Dexter knife blades is high-carbon, high-alloy, stain-resistant steel. Dexter helped create the formula for a blade that stays sharp with extensive use and sharpens easily. Each blade is individually ground to the perfect angle with the perfect amount of flex to glide through meat and over bones. “They’re made in the U.S.A., and they’re always sharp,” said Steve Nagy, of Bonita Springs Fishing (bonitaspringsfishing.com), who runs inshore, offshore and Keys tarpon trips. “I grew up with Dexter. I worked in a grocery store as a kid. Dexter knives were the only knives we used in the meat market, and it’s still the only knife I use today. They feel good in your hand, and they’re always sharp.” The handle is as important as the blade when it comes to performance. Years ago, Dexter found perfection in ergonomics with its SOFGRIP white handle. It is soft to the grip and provides exceptional nonslip comfort and precise control, even with wet hands. More recently, they developed an orange Ur-Cut handle that custom molds to your hand for an exact fit, and that’s about as gimmicky as Dexter is likely to get. In October, Dexter will release the new SOFGRIP with EDGE GUARD, a new and improved blade guard that protects the edge and provides airflow to protect the blade. The product will feature the iconic SOFGRIP white handle and a DEXSTEEL blade. For more information, go to dexteroutdoors.com. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

RIGGING & JIGGING

FRESHWATER

RIGGING & JIGGING

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

I

Tim Barefoot

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag

or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head. To see a detailed video of this, visit the website and click on “Butterflying a Bait.” Learn how to butterfly a bait with a video at

Meet the Watch That Shook Up Switzerland A watch that revolutionized timekeeping at a price equally as radical.

n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece. First released to the public in 1969, the watch turned the entire industry on its head, ushering in a new era of timekeeping. It’s this legacy that we’re honoring with the Timemaster Watch, available only through Stauer at a price only we can offer. Prior to Piezo watches, gravity-driven Swiss watches were the standard bearer of precision timekeeping. But all that changed when the first commercially available Piezo watch came onto the market. The result of ten years of research and development by some of the world’s top engineers, they discovered that when you squeeze a certain type of crystal, it generates a tiny electric current. And, if you pass electricity through the crystal, it vibrates at a precise frequency–exactly 32,768 times each second. When it came on the market, the Piezo watch was the most dependable timepiece available, accurate to 0.2 seconds per day. Today, it’s still considered a spectacular advance in electrical engineering. “It was like a magnum bullet shot at the most sensitive spot of the mechanical watch industry... Switzerland was terrified.” —Ariel Adams of A Blog to Watch. With the Timemaster we’ve set one of the world’s most important mechanical advances inside a decidedly masculine case. A handsome prodigy in rich leather and gold-finished stainless steel. The simplicity of the watch’s case belies an ornately detailed dial, which reflects the prestige of this timepiece. Call today to secure your own marvel of timekeeping history. Because we work directly with our own craftsman we’re able to offer the Timemaster at a fraction of the price that many Piezo watches cost. But a watch like this doesn’t come along every day. Call today before time runs out and they’re gone. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Spend some time with this engineering masterpiece for one month. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, simply send it back within 30 days for a refund of the item price. But we’re betting this timekeeping pioneer is a keeper.
