OUTDOOR APPAREL REVIEW Gillz 2020 Tournament Series Shirt
G
illz has re-invented the original vented fishing shirt, and if you liked the original, you’ll love the new 2020 Tournament Series Shirt. They took the best features from the original and added a few sweet twists. First, the side vents were re-engineered to pull cooling air more efficiently through and around your body, keeping you cooler than ever. On top of that, it’s made from the proprietary and innovative GillzTec fabric. This interlocking fabric is engineered to quickly distribute moisture 360 degrees across the garment for better cooling. Since the moisture spreads throughout the garment, it dries and evaporates much faster, keeping you cool and comfortable and essentially eliminates any sweat spots that would normally appear. In fact, it’s 30 percent cooler than competitors! Lightweight and providing UPF 50+ protection, the shirt blocks 98 percent of UVA/UVB rays. Plus, it’s chemical free and looks pretty awesome. Gillz. The coolest gear on the planet.

W
e’re going to let you in on a secret. Billionaires have billions because they know value is not increased by an inflated price. They avoid big name markups, and aren’t swayed by flashy advertising. When you look on their wrist you’ll find a classic timepiece, not a cry for attention–– because they know true value comes from keeping more money in their pocket. We agree with this thinking wholeheartedly. And, so do our two-and-a-half million clients. It’s time you got in on the secret too. The Jet-Setter Chronograph can go up against the best chronographs in the market, deliver more accuracy and style than the “luxury” brands, and all for far, far less. $1,150 is what the Jet-Setter Chronograph would cost you with nothing more than a different name on the face. With over two million timepieces sold (and counting), we know a thing or two about creating watches people love. The Jet-Setter Chronograph gives you what you need to master time and keeps the superfluous stuff out of the equation. A classic in the looks department and a stainless steel power tool of construction, this is all the watch you need. And, then some. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Experience the Jet-Setter Chronograph for 30 days. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, send it back for a refund of the item price. Time is running out. he International Game Fish Association (IGFA) tracks record fish catches around the globe, and they have been busy. Since December, they have approved 65 new entries, including line class, fly-caught and youth records for different species. More than 30 of those records are all-tackle records, which means they are the largest individuals ever documented with IGFA. Here’s a quick look at some highlights: Tan’s Nile Perch Christopher Tan of Malaysia caught and released an incredible 146-centimeter (4.8-foot) Nile perch to set the IGFA All-Tackle Length World Record. In early August, Tan was casting a Halco Laser Pro 190 in Murchison Falls, Uganda. Pitman’s Golden Trevally Aussie angler Sahra Pitman caught a beautiful 12.25-kilogram (27-pound, 1-ounce) golden trevally to set the new IGFA Women’s 6-kg (12-lb.) Line Class World Record while fishing in Shark Bay, Western Australia. The record fish hit a McCarthy soft plastic and put up a 20-minute fight. It is currently the largest Line Class record of any received for golden trevally. Weeks’ Green Humphead Parrotfish Mark Weeks set the bar high with the first green humphead parrotfish submitted for an IGFA All-Tackle World Record, with a massive 46.35-kilogram (102-pound, 3-ounce) fish he caught and released while fly fishing the flats of Providence, Seychelles. The record parrotfish sucked up a crab pattern and took off across the flat.
Christopher Tan with the nearly 5-foot Nile perch he caught in Uganda.
Allum’s Rainbow Trout Emily Allum caught and released an impressive 13.30-kilogram (29-pound, 5-ounce) rainbow trout to set the new IGFA Women’s 4-kg (8-lb.) Line Class World Record. Allum was casting a Glo Bug in the Tekapo Canal, New Zealand, and fought the record trout for 10-minutes prior to weighing and releasing it. Schmid’s Arctic Char James Schmid recently set the new IGFA All-Tackle Length World Record for Arctic char with a gorgeous 93-centimeter (nearly 17-inch) fish. The char ate a Vibrax Blue Fox spinner in the Red Belly Lake, Victoria Island, Canada. After an 8-minute fight, James took the required measurement and released the fish.

The U.S. Coast Guard recently approved the use of Serious Signal’s flagship electronic visual distress signal device as a nighttime distress signal. The C-1002 is the industry’s first and only two-color distress light approved for carriage, which completely and legally replaces the need to carry marine pyrotechnic flares. The C-1002 also includes features that enhance its functionality to the level of an alert and notification system. “We’re thrilled that the C-1002 Electronic LED Flare passed the extremely challenging laboratory testing required by the Coast Guard,” said Anthony Covelli, Sirius Signal CEO. “It’s the brightest multi-LED handheld SOS device on the planet—one that required sophisticated engineering and many new innovative solutions to overcome daunting challenges.” The C-1002 flashes the SOS distress signal—three short flashes, three long flashes, three short flashes, using a two-color plus infrared SOS flash pattern (red/ orange and cyan) that has been found more effective against shoreline background light clutter, according to studies conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard R&D Center. The C-1002 is also Bluetooth-enabled with advanced mobile app connectivity, providing an additional layer of protection and communication for recreational boaters— and its infrared signal will be recognized by SAR aircraft from miles overhead. “Based on our review… we acknowledge that the subject device, as tested, meets the performance criteria as specified in the policy letter and may be carried to meet regulatory requirements as a nighttime distress signal per 33 CFR 175.130,” noted the letter Sirius Signal received from the Coast Guard. In time for the 2020 boating season, the C-1002 will be available for purchase on the Sirius Signal website and Amazon.com, as well as at premier marine distributors.

he organizers of the Blue Marlin Grand Championship, one of the cornerstone tournaments on the Gulf of Mexico marlin circuit, have announced a new event. The Invitational, slated for August 6-8, will feature a field of just 30 teams and a first-place prize of $1 million. “We asked a number of the top boat owners and captains that are currently fishing in these tournaments in the Gulf about what they would like to see in a new event,” said tournament promoter Scott Burt. “Their overwhelming response was two-fold: They wanted to know who they were fishing against, and they wanted to fish for a million dollars for the winner.” With a minimum qualifying length of 112 inches LJFL, blue marlin will be scored at one point per pound. Released blue marlin are worth 625 points, although it’s clearly stated in the rules that the heaviest qualifying blue marlin will win first place. Second through fourth place will be decided by a combination of release and weighed fish points. However, in the event that no qualifying fish are weighed, release points decide the overall winner. Therefore, a seven-figure payday is possible for billfish releases in the Gulf. The Invitational is an all-in format, with a flat entry fee of $50,000 per boat. Aside from the million dollars awarded to first, second place will earn $145,000, third place is worth $100,000 and fourth, $75,000. Boats may depart from any port in the Gulf of Mexico, with the weigh-in held at The Wharf Marina in Orange Beach, Ala. To request an invitation, contact Jim Cox at (251) 802-2664 or TheInvitational@CMMMarinas.com. Visit www.milliondollarmarlin.com.

t all depends on the weather, but the Bassmaster Classic could produce some serious sacks of fish when some of the world’s best bass tournament anglers descend on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville March 6-8. On the 50th anniversary of the iconic championship event, 53 anglers who have qualified through the B.A.S.S. tournament season will launch on the sprawling, grass-filled impoundment of the Tennessee River during what has historically been prime time for big bass on the “Big G.” Pre-spawn activity was already ramping up during an early-February warm spell, although heavy rains, high waters and the cold front that followed pushed the fish right back out in the middle of the month. What that should mean is bass are primed to move up as soon as conditions stabilize. And when they move up, they will feed up in preparation for the spawn. If the first week of March sees warmer weather and rains hold off, this year’s Classic could become a shootout featuring heavy five-fish limits and some monster bass. Some of the largest fish of the year are usually caught during the early stages of the spawn. On the other hand, north Alabama is a place where early spring could bring 75 degree temperatures or snow flurries. Sometimes tough fishing conditions are just the thing to separate great anglers from good ones. Either way, with a more than $1 million purse, $300,000 for the winner and all of the industry perks that come with a Classic victory, it will be a lifechanging event for at least one angler. For more information, go to www.bassmaster.com.
O
n Jan. 25, Forrest Lee Wood, the iconic sportsman and founder of Ranger Boats, died at the age of 87. An early pioneer of tournament bass fishing, Wood was an entrepreneur who left an indelible mark on the angling world. He is widely credited with development of the modern bass boat. Wood began his career in the outdoors as a trout fishing guide on the White River in Arkansas. In 1968, he and his wife, Nina, founded Wood Manufacturing Co., and he built his first six boats behind a service station in Flippin, Ark. His fledgling company, renamed Ranger Boats in honor of the Texas Rangers and U.S. Army Rangers, flourished along with the exploding popularity of tournament bass fishing through the 1970s. A competitive angler himself, Wood qualified for two Bassmaster Classics. He fished 101 B.A.S.S. tournaments with a good deal of success, and his knowledge of what bass anglers want in a boat led to the prototypes that influenced all bass boats that followed. Ranger was the official boat of B.A.S.S. from 1972-2000. In 1996, Wood’s initials were used to rename the Operation Bass tournament series, and the FLW Tour was born with its championship event the Forrest Wood Cup. In addition to his involvement in boat building and tournament bass fishing, Wood was a sportsman and a conservationist who served as commissioner of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Nice pair of Redfish.
About Us
he key word for March is transition. March will show us the first signs of spring here in the low country. The days will be longer and the weather will be warmer than the past few months, but we will still have some cold days. Fishing here in Charleston will be hot and cold as well. Some days will have lots of action and other days will a little tough. Because the weather will change from hot to cold in March, you have to change your tactics to catch fish consistently. When the weather is cool and calm, the redfish will be schooled up in their winter spots and you can have some great sight fishing to large schools on the flats. When the water turns warm, however, the fish often spread out. This means you have to be flexible with how you fish. The fish might be in one location feeding like mad one day and be completely void of the area the next day. When this happens you have to think like a fish and figure out where they went. Sometimes they have simply moved around the bend or to the other side of the channel. With all the change and transition, you also have to change the type of bait you use each day. When fish are schooled up, the DOA shrimp or jerk baits will work very well. However, when they spread out you might find the water is off color or the wind is blowing. In this case you may need to try anything from cracked crab to cut mullet to mud minnows. You will find that the redfish are finicky—one day they will eat only one thing, and the next day they will only eat something else. This happens more in March than any other time of the year. If the weather is on the warm side you might start catching trout by the end of the month. I would use a DOA shrimp or mud minnow under a popping cork to catch these. I like to drift a cork along the grass later in the day when the water is the warmest. The trout that have moved into the marsh will go into warmer water next to the grass looking for something to eat. The key thing to remember is to be flexible and don’t be afraid to change when, where, and how you are fishing to catch fish in March..

Mt. Pleasant Pier March Fishing Forecast
T
he weather was mild and the fishing was steady this winter, especially on days where Mother Nature gave us a bit of a reprieve from the wind. Trout and sheepshead are the two most consistent species year-round at the pier and this winter was no different. Hopefully you made it out and got into a few yourself, but if not, we appear to be headed for an early spring so you can to test your skill. Anglers should expect to see a few species reappear near the pier as things warm up. Nice Sheepshead caught at the pier Expect to see the return of flounder and black drum while sheepshead should still be hanging around the pilings. Anglers will be able to continue targeting red drum and trout as they become more aggressive in the warmer water. Mud minnows fished either under a cork or on a Carolina rig could be the ticket. Cut bait or fresh shrimp are also productive options as the bite picks up. Pier regulars are typically successful with artificial lures when targeting trout as well. Some of the pier favorites are Billy Bay silver/gold flake, Zman slim swims, and Vudu shrimp in a variety of colors. We’ll be getting some new colors and styles in soon so you’ll want to stop in and grab a pack. One very effective method is to cast parallel to the pier and work the lure back at various depths and speeds. You never know what’s hiding under the structure waiting for that ambush Nice Sheepshead caught at the pier strike. Check in with staff anytime to get some helpful advice and then head down the pier to see what’s biting in March. Don’t forget to check out Charlestoncountyparks.com for information regarding summer tournament dates and happenings at all the county parks. There’s a lot going on for the non-fishing members of your family as well. For any additional information about the pier or what’s biting this week feel free to call the River Watch Café & Gift Shop on the pier at 843-762-9946. the sunshine and catch a fish. I know for me and some of my friends we enjoy being able to just get out on the boat and enjoy the experience of fishing and making memories. If you have a neighborhood pond try and find out if it is freshwater or salt. You would be surprised at how many fish are in some of the local small neighborhood ponds and how much fun reeling in Carp and bass can be! The smaller the rod the more fun! My only warning to pond fishing is be careful of snapping Turtles! My friend Christin caught one and demanded on taking the hook out! Luckily she still has all her fingers! Tight lines!

t’s officially spring time and the fishing options are about to be amazing! The best part about it is that if the wind is blowing too much there is always the freshwater fishing to go and try and pull Largemouth Bass off the beds. The worst part about it is if your saltwater fishing is trying to figure out what bait to use. A mud minnow or shrimp will usually work but seeing more mullet showing up will make saltwater inshore fishing more difficult. I don’t know about you but Spring time always is exciting to me. Offshore the Wahoo bite is usually pretty good and then comes Dolphin aka Mahi mahi season. With the weather getting warmer it’s easier to convince the lady Anglers to come out more and enjoy

Want to Catch More Fish?! Jiggin’ Jerry’s D.O.A. Shrimp Makeover
.O.A. has been a popular manufacturer of artificial baits for some time now, and one of its most popular saltwater artificials is its Shrimp. The first being its 3-inch in ¼ ounce, the second being its 4-inch in ½ ounce, and then its later introduction was its 2.75-inch. These Shrimp come in all kinds of colors and patterns. They are popular used under popping corks, free line with just the Shrimp itself, or even thrown into deeper water with small trolling weights. The 3-inch being the most common size used only comes in ¼ ounce. You will find that the artificial Shrimp has a black-ridged weight inserted in a slot located in the belly of the Shrimp. The hooks are chrome and are placed in a pre-grooved location from the nose of the Shrimp with the barb exiting just where the tail and the main body meet. D.O.A.’s 4-inch Shrimp is rigged the exact same way, except the weight located in the belly of the Shrimp is heavier, bringing its 4-inch Shrimp to the ½ ounce category, and the hook is slightly larger. While using these Shrimp, most experienced photo A anglers have noticed that the ¼ ounce Shrimp sinks slowly and is almost always lying on its side in the water. After a few casts, or especially landing a few fish, they will notice that the hook pulls forward from the Shrimp, and the body of the Shrimp slides back down the hook, curling the Shrimp into a “u.” Then we find ourselves trying to push the hook back into the Shrimp and casting again, only to find photo B the problem repeating itself over and over. The D.O.A. 3-inch Shrimp is a fantastic bait and could work even better if we could bring it to at least ½ ounce in weight, place the hook where it will stop backing out of the Shrimp, and position the weight where the Shrimp will not fall sideways. Instead, make it more of a nose drop to reach fish in the deeper holes and maintain its depths in higher winds and swifter currents. So, what I have photo c done years ago is what I call, “The D.O.A. Shrimp Makeover.” You start by removing the chrome hook from the Shrimp. After doing so, you will notice at the nose of the Shrimp the entrance hole where you removed the hook from. You will then take the hook and
6 CHARLESTON MARCH 2020
place it in the nose of the Shrimp just above the entrance hole (see Photo A) and start to lace the hook down through the Shrimp in the hard plastic and exiting the barb out of the exit hole at the top of the Shrimp (see Photo B). This will ensure a strong, firm placement of the hook and allow the two keeper barbs to fasten the hook securely in the plastic. You then take weights, usually referred to as nail weights, photo D and you can obtain these in different sizes. One popular brand that I use is VMC Neko Weights, size 3/32 or 2.7g. Place the weight into the hole in the nose of the Shrimp you removed the hook from (see Photo C). Push the weight all the way into the Shrimp. The weight will rest between the black belly weight and hook (see Photo D). photo E This will greatly increase the action of the Shrimp, allow for farther casts, the Shrimp will make more of a nosedive and stay upright in its action, allowing you to work faster water, reaching depths quicker, and above all, more options with the Shrimp’s presentation. There are two other ways to rig a D.O.A. Shrimp. One other way is converting the photo F D.O.A. Shrimp into a fleeing Shrimp. A fleeing Shrimp means that the artificial Shrimp is pulled in the direction from the tip of the tail instead of by the nose. You can accomplish this with D.O.A. easily by removing the hook the same way described above, except for this time, you are going to take the hook and lace it starting from the tip of the tail, come through the tail and exit out at the top of the Shrimp (see Photo E). All 3 You can still add a Neko weight or nail weight through the front nose if you want to. This will increase the casting distance tremendously with the fleeing Shrimp because the Shrimp will act like a dart rigged in this fashion. The second other way is wacky style. That’s right! Just like a rubber worm using a wacky hook or wide-gap circle hook. This style is perfect for popping corks. Instead of the Shrimp hanging by its nose with its tail straight down, the Shrimp hangs level from the top of the body. The process is simple. Remove the hook DOA Shrimp from the body, then take the wacky hook and place it through the side of the Shrimp in the center just above the belly weight (see Photo F). I hope this helps with your next fishing adventure, fishing with D.O.A. Shrimp. Like I always say, good luck out there and have fun fishing! Folly Beach Pier Report March Fishing Forecast By Joey Crawford
W
elcome to March, where the days get longer and the fishing gets hotter!! We expect to see bait fish return to the surf including menhaden, bluefish, spot, with others to follow. Baitfish are the first sign of the Atlantic coming back to life for the summer. Last year we had good sized pompano and sheepshead arrive early in the shallow surf. With another mild coastal winter, we hope for a repeat this spring. However, there’s a whole lot of ocean, so we’re looking for a series of consecutive warm days to help heat up the gullies and shallows. Once the water temperature reaches 67° F, anything on the board can be caught off the Folly Pier, including mackerel.

The Southside Fishing Report March Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands
M
arch fishing has started out good, with a mild low country winter and warmer than normal water temps the bite is on. Hopefully winter is done and our speckled trout numbers are making a great comeback from our brutal winter about 3 years ago. The redfish are still bunched up in their winter time schools on shallow flats, and fixed structure areas. With the warming waters the reds have be fired up and really aggressive, especially on a prefrontal bite. Sight fishing has been good on the cleaner water days, mostly throwing small top water plugs and scented jerk baits, but fresh blue crab has been the bait of choice until the bait stealers start to move back inshore. We are finding the trout around high water tagging on marsh grass and shell points, and doing best while throwing popping corks with live shrimp and or mud minnows. During low water the trout have been staging on drop off ledges in 8-15 feet of water, and best bite has come with a slow retrieve with a curly tail or paddle tail grub on 1/4 oz jig head with water clarity determining what colors we are using. The inshore sheepshead bite has been really good around low tide fishing structure with oysters, clams, and fiddler crabs when we can get them.
The nearshore and reef fishing has been good, when the winds were calm enough for us to get off the beach, which has been a couple times each with all the approaching spring fronts and heavy spring winds. Mostly at the reef we have been exploring the bottom with jigs and live bait with a good mixed bag of: seabags, sheepshead, black drum, weakfish, and some large flounder. The surface bite in the ocean has been fun with some large schools of small bluefish and false albacores . Hopefully without any major cold fronts our migratory species will show up a month sooner than normal with our warm water, giving us a little more variety of species to fish. Boating in the Lowcountry Plan a Boat Trip
W
hile we’ve had a fairly mild winter, we still yearn for the longer days of spring and more time on the water. Now is a good time to make plans for venturing away from Charleston for a weekend boating adventure this spring or summer. With the Intracoastal Waterway, making one day boat trips is relatively easy. To the south lies Beaufort, about 65 miles or Hilton Head about 90 miles. Beaufort is a great trip. The Downtown Marina is right in the historic downtown district with a Hotel and plenty of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. Just a few miles further south gets you to Hilton Head. While it is a bit more pricey, staying at Harbor Town will be a weekend you’ll never forget. To the north from Charleston lies Georgetown, about 65 miles. If you want to stay in the Historic Riverwalk District with restaurants and night life, stay at the Harborwalk Marina, but be prepared to take a short Uber to the closest hotels. Georgetown Marina is just a couple of miles further north, but it is walking distance to a Hampton Inn. Traveling north
10 CHARLESTON MARCH 2020
from Georgetown, cruise through the beautiful Waccamaw River up to Myrtle Beach, about 90 miles north of Charleston. There are numerous areas to stay in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Little River. While doable in one day in most power boats, a trip to Myrtle Beach is best when coupled with a layover in Georgetown. When planning a weekend excursion, be sure to make your plans well in advance. Know and understand how to travel the ICW. Plan your trip ahead of time using charts or your GPS. It is safer and more fun to go with several other boaters. Don’t forget to make reservations at the marina and the hotels well in advance. These are popular trips and space on the weekends fills up fast, particularly if you want to go to the Beaufort Water Festival, July 17-26, 2020. There are a few extremely shallow spots, especially on the southern route, so check the tides and be prepared. Also, either trip is mostly through protected rivers, but there are several open water areas to consider. To the south is the Coosaw River just before Beaufort and Port Royal Sound, just before Hilton Head. To the north, Winyah Bay is the most open area. These areas can be quite rough in smaller craft if the winds are a bit strong. Rest assured that whichever adventure you decide to take, the ride is beautiful and it makes for great family time on the water. . - Jim Duncan/ Duncan Boats 843-744-2628

Artificial Intelligence Don’t Be So Cranky!
E
very year Ralph and I auction off an “educational” fishing trip to help teach people how to better fish artificial lures. One year I tried an experiment. We had two novice anglers that day. I offered to one of the anglers a rod with a 1000 size spinning reel. The other was using a 2500 sized reel, a common reel for inshore fishing. I then watched and waited. Sure enough, the angler with the 1000 reel caught more fish, almost 2 to 1, over the other angler. Coincidence? I don’t think so. People want to crank their reel. Heck, I’m guilty of it sometimes too. As I discussed in last month’s article, fishing slower equates to more fish caught – not just in winter, but pretty much
all year. How much line retrieved per crank comes from two main factors, the gear ratio (number of revolutions of the spool per crank), and the diameter of the spool. To demonstrate, I laid two lures on my driveway, one connected to a 1000 spinning reel (5.0:1 gear ratio), and one with a 2500 spinning reel (5.6:1 gear ratio). I then made one full crank of each. You can see that the 1000 retrieved about one third less line than the 2500. That’s a significant difference! Incidentally, the shorter of the two retrieves was still 27 inches; the longer, almost 40 inches. More than you would have guessed? Probably. Next time you purchase a reel, many times you have a choice of gear ratios. I always purchase the least ratio I can. Because I, too, like to crank – but I will be 30% slower with the same amount of crank – and therefore fishing slower. In summary, I hope your takeaway from all this is that we are human, and we like to crank our reels – and we all will have better results fishing artificial lures by simply cranking slower. Give these methods a try this month and let us know how it works.

Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Seeing Red, Chasing after Redfish
O
ne of the best times of the year to fish for redfish as a kayak angler is in the later months of winter. I know you are thinking I must be off my rocker to even think about fishing in February or March from a kayak! Crazy? Yes, crazy like a fox! When it gets cold one of the places that you can find reds and not just one or two but schools of them are back in creeks especially small ones with deep holes and mud flats. When I find these schools of reds way back in a hole what I DON’T find is an angler in a 18ft center console trying to crowd me off the spot because I’m in a plastic boat! Finding reds back in small creeks is one thing, getting close enough
in the creek. Let it your bait sit, then crawl it along ever so slowly and be ready for the take, which will most likely be more subtle than you are used to feeling from a redfish. Once hooked, the fight you know and love about the red is there, the challenge becomes controlling the fight in such a small space while dodging crap traps and keeping the fish off any oysters or other hazards to your line. I hooked a 29 inch red on the rising tide so far back in a small creek that I could not turn my kayak around, I had to back paddle about 10 yards till the creek was wide enough to turn around! Small skinny water can be very productive for all sizes of ! Good Luck and Tight Lines, Mike Kohler / LKA Tournament Director
to get a good cast to them becomes the challenge; the water is small and every little sounds carries thru the water like it was blasted thru a megaphone. Moving slowly becomes key to getting close to the reds; if you are a power fisher type who likes to run and gun this type of fishing will drive you nuts but if you can slow down move quietly and observe intently the water in front of you the reward can be great. What do I throw at the reds you ask to get them to bite? Ok you twisted my arm, I will share a couple baits that have been getting it done for me lately. When the water is in the mid to upper 50’s a great search bait for me has been the Johnson sprite gold spoon, it’s a tried and true lure that gets the job done and the single treble hook gives me a great hook up rate. When the water gets colder, a slower presentation close to the bottom is key. A weedless Vudu shrimp or a Berkley gulp shrimp on an Eye Strike weed-less jig head works great! In the mornings before the sun has had its chance to warm up the water on the mud flats throw a shrimp into the holes you can find COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

Charleston Offshore Fishing Improve Your Fishing Skills
D
o you want to learn how to perfect your offshore fishing skills and land more fish? I’ll pass on a few key tips that I’ve picked up throughout my years in the cockpit. The job begins with perfecting your tackle. Trust me, NOBODY is okay with losing a fish due to tackle failure. Before heading out check all of your leaders, connections, hooks, and main line. It is essential to stay on top of your tackle and replace old lines and connections. While rigging, pay close attention to detail by making sure all of your knot and crimp connections are flawless. Now that you’ve perfected your tackle, you won’t be sweating bullets when you’re tight with your next trophy. While heading out, begin to prep your bait by poking the eyes out with an arrow along with pooping and breaking the backs. It’s important to brine the bait preventing the ballyhoo from disintegrating when a fish strikes and misses, allowing for a second strike. When rigging ballyhoo, be sure the hook and beak pin are perfectly symmetrical with no bend in the bait in order to keep it from spinning. You’ll want to keep the hook free while pulling the bait from only the nose allowing the bait to swim freely creating an appetizing presentation. Managing the Cockpit is a must for any good mate. Before fishing, make sure your crew is informed what to do when a fish hooks up and how to properly work the rod while fighting the fish. When setting out your spread, begin with the furthest baits from the boat to prevent tangles. While trolling, keep a keen eye out for any fish in the spread, as well as making sure that the baits are properly swimming.
On days that it’s difficult to spot a fish in the spread, I like to look for odd splashes from the bait; more times than not these end up being fish strikes. If you’re able to spot the fish before the strike, grab the rod that the fish is trailing and put it in free spool while holding your thumb on the spool. Once the fish strikes, let it run for 5 seconds and then tighten up the drag to set the hook. While hooked up, pay attention to where the fish is heading and clear the spread accordingly. If possible, only clear the baits that are in the way so you have a shot at a double or more. Efficiently clear the rigger lines by shorting the baits up to the boat while keeping the line in the clips to save time putting the spread back out. When landing the fish, try to keep it out to the side of the boat to stay away from the prop wash. While lining up the gaff shot, make sure the fish is on or near the surface and aim for the middle of the head. Once the fish is gaffed, lift it straight up and over the rail while backing up. Following these general guidelines are essential for any mate, but it takes years and years of experience to become proficient in the cockpit. On your next trip follow some of these important tips to further prefect your offshore game. Carolina Flyfisher They’re Back! America’s Fish By Scotty Davis
A
merican shad are entering the rivers of the Southeast, yes its that time of the year. If you’ve never tried this historical battlier, its time my friend. A saltwater fish, they enter the freshwater to spawn far upriver once water temperatures become ideal. Their arrival is responsible for town celebrations and “planking” festivals up the east coast. Did you know it was the American shad that saved George Washington’s army from starvation? Yessir. Here’s the lowdown on catching them on a fly rod: Shad prefer the lower portion of the water column so getting to their depth is one of the most important things. A sinking line is well worth the investment here. When water is being generated by the dams of the lakes, the current triggers a much better “bite,” but it also creates more drag on the fly line so a heavier grain is often necessary. I like to fish a 250g line on a 7wt rod in moving water or a 150g line on a 6wt if the current is slack. When drifting flies on sinking lines a shorter leader (5’-6’) will lead to more fish due to the fact that there will be more slack in longer leaders resulting in weaker hooksets. Leaders should range anywhere from 6-10lb test. Traditionally shad flies have been tied in white, pink, chartreuse, and a red/yellow combo. A dropper fly is
We Keep You ON THE ROAD Quality Boat Trailers Repairs, and Parts Sales
almost a requirement and I will generally use the same pattern for both. They will hit the back fly 99% of the time. You’ll notice the spin fisherman around are all fishing small chartreuse crappie jigs. I follow the Ol’ Timers advice on this one for flies too, “If it ain’t chartreuse, it ain’t no use.” I’ve tried to test it during a good bite and it true. Its a reaction to that particular color and they wont hit anything else in the Lowcountry...sounds crazy, but try it out. Flies need to be weighted and simple since you will donate a few to the bottom. To simulate movement tails made of marabou feathers or rabbit work very well. In sometimes overly popular places such as the Rediversion Canal and the Tailrace Canal expect company. This is not the solidarity of fly fishing, but a celebration of like minded fisherman and of course, the fish. There can easily be 20-30 boats in a rather small space so be courteous, meet your neighbor, have fun,and above all catch some shad!

offers views out to the side of your boat underwater upwards of 180 feet on either side. This locates fish you would not see using standard down-pointing sonar. It enables me to discover potentially productive areas without making a cast. With functional electronics, you cut a lot of time searching and focus on productive areas. What You Need: A tournament angler might feel the need for all the bells and whistles to be competitive. This can lead to six or more graphs on the boat. That’s ok, but it can be overkill for someone who is recreational fishing. Some basic features, however, have become must-haves. Navigation and mapping systems are important. Speed, time and temperature data are useful. A color monitor of 9 inches or larger is nice for ease of use. I would choose a unit with a few buttons and smooth functionality. Any of the notable three brands will suffice. However, having too much information can be overwhelming. Paying The Price: When you see boats with four 16-inch TVs on the console and more on the front deck, rest assured that it set the owner back a bit. You can leave a hole in your wallet if you’re not careful. I believe in buying what you need, not what you see. For a few hundred bucks, you can get a decent sonar fish finder that will cover basic needs. However, if you find you need an upgrade, there are units out there that cost more than a small compact car. But really ask yourself: “Do I need the electronics to play YouTube videos, or do I need them to navigate, locate and catch fish?” It’s purely personal and a choice for each to make. Electronics are an excellent tool to help you catch more fish. They make fishing more enjoyable, but it’s wise to consider what you want and need. Learning to use all the available tools is another subject all together.
By Jay Striker ou’ve seen those bass boats with two or three large monitors at the console and just as many on the front deck. There are good reasons for having these electronics, but I believe there’s also overkill. As a tournament bass angler, having good electronics allows you to compete against the fish in ways that did not exist in the past. Although sonar capability has been around for decades, using this technology to locate fish and eventually catch them is a game-changer. Let’s discuss the benefits of electronics, how much you need, and the cost associated with them. Benefits: Competitive bass anglers must make pressure-packed decisions. Many of them are made based on data picked up from electronics on the boat. When I’m pre-fishing, I really try to cover Follow Jay Striker on social media @JayStriker52 on IG or check water using side imaging, which higher-end electronics provide. ust a 20-minute drive north of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Little River Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) that snakes behind it offer yearround fishing in generally calm, shallow water. Check it out on a map, and you’ll instantly know this is a fishy place. The inside waters here are bordered by marshes, parklands and plenty of drainages positioned perfectly for pumping baitfish, small shrimp and other tasty fodder right into the main channels on a dropping tide. It’s an ideal set-up for anglers to connect with speckled trout, red-
fish, black drum, flounder, sheepshead and even an occasional gray trout (a.k.a. weakfish). “The ocean water from Little River Inlet refreshes this strip of Intracoastal Waterway,” said Capt. Bob Strange, of Strange Magic Fishing Charters (www. strangemagiccharters.com; 843-274-1082). “We spend a lot of time working the backwaters here—the creeks, the drainages, the coves.” Strange predominately targets speckled trout, redfish and sheepshead in early spring, adding black drum and flounder in April. He’ll expand his efforts to waters outside Little River Inlet once the waters stabilize at about 70 degrees in May and June, as Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and additional species arrive. “Our early-season action is a lot fun,” noted Strange. “The ICW can be a busy place once the summer gets rolling, but in March and April it sees very little boating traffic. That means once you find the speckled trout you can usually have ’em all to yourself.” From his 22’ Pathfinder, Strange arms clients with 6’6” Shimano spinning rods with a medium action and fast tips. Shimano 2500 or 3000 series reels filled with 10- to 20-pound braid are a good match. He uses a 15- to 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and then the terminal tackle. Strange fishes live mud minnows, cut bait or fresh shrimp about 25 percent of the time and artificials the rest of the way. He favors small jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp! Swim Mullets, Z-Man trailers or similar soft plastics with white or chartreuse his most productive colors. The lures can be cast and jigged back to the boat or worked beneath popping corks. “Oyster bars make a great starting point, but don’t overlook creek bends, docks and the like,” explained Strange. “Any of these can be a hot spot. Transition areas work great, too, especially where you find shell banks changing over to grass or a drainage emptying onto a flat. Add in a little structure, and you’re in great shape.” While it is advisable to start your search with some hired help, anglers looking to trailer their own vessels can launch at a public ramp at the base of the RT. 17 bridge where it crosses the ICW between Little River and North Myrtle Beach. Bait and tackle along with info are available at Cricket Cove Marina in Little River (843-249-7169; www.cricketcovemarina.com).

Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter
I
f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. MARK SOSIN
othing is more demanding in light-tackle fishing than to spot a fish and make a cast to it without much time to get ready. Speed and accuracy are the keys to a perfect presentation that results in a strike. Several species of gamefish invade relatively shallow water in search of food as the incoming tide floods an area. Catching them sometimes requires you to see them so you can present a bait or lure. Your target species might be striped bass in San Francisco Bay or in coastal areas throughout the northeast. Jumbo bluefish charge across the skinny portions of Chesapeake Bay each spring because the menhaden are there. Redfish might be your target in Texas and along the Gulf Coast. Down in Florida, the shallows are full of life with species such as bonefish, permit, tarpon, jacks, sharks and other critters. Concentration is critical in spotting fish or in determining signs of fish. It’s a mental discipline as well as a physical one. If you’re working off-color water, start by scouting the surface for any signs of activity. It could be a swirl or a boil or surface water being pushed by moving fish. Your goal is to identify anything different from the surrounding water. Expand your search area to waters a considerable distance away. Don’t overlook slicks, muds or anything else out of the ordinary.
When the water is shallow and a fish noses down to eat something on or near the bottom, its tail often lifts above the surface and can be spotted at a significant distance. Species such as redfish may lift their caudal fin in the air and it, too, can be seen. Tails or fins may only show for a moment or two, but if you are concentrating, you should be able to spot them. It takes practice to see fish, even in clear water. The trick involves staring through the surface of the water as if it were a pane of glass. Focus on the bottom or just above it. Your eyes should scan the area as if they were a radar antenna, moving right, left and center. And don’t forget to look far out across the water to detect the flash of a tail, wakes, birds or any other signs of activity. Some species may lie motionless waiting to ambush a tasty meal, while others keep moving. As you scan through the surface, a silver colored fish might look black. When a fish picks a morsel off the bottom, it creates a small puff of mud. Experienced eyes identify this very slight discoloration in the water, and the angler knows that something was just there. If you continue to see fresh puffs, cast a bait or lure in the area. The results could be impressive. Presenting a bait or lure to a fish you can see is certainly the ultimate angling challenge. Putting yourself in those situations can be very demanding, requires total concentration, and, at times can prove frustrating. At the end of the day, you might be tired, but the successful experience will brighten your memory for days to come.

t’s official! After years of drastically curtailed federal seasons and bag limits, NOAA fisheries voted in February to implement state management for private anglers fishing for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico. Under an exempted fishing permit (EFP), the five Gulf Coast states—Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas— managed the private recreational Photo courtesy of Capt. Chester Reese, red snapper fishery in the Gulf Natural World Charters. of Mexico for the 2018 and 2019 fishing seasons and saw remarkable success. The EFP was the result of a multi-year effort to give the states control after the status quo federal management approach reduced the Gulf red snapper season to an astounding three days for private anglers in federal waters. “State management of Gulf red snapper has been a game-changer for anglers,” said Kellie Ralston, with the American Sportfishing Association. “Because of their targeted data collection and their ability to quickly respond to what’s going on inseason, each of the Gulf states has been able to provide substantial red snapper seasons for the private recreational sector. None of this would have been possible without the leadership of the states, the Secretary of Commerce and our Congressional champions. Making this management a long-term reality through the formal approval of Amendment 50 ensures this great success story will continue for years to come.” At the Gulf Council meeting in January, each state gave a report on their data collection program and emphasized their ability to incorporate local factors to ground-truth the harvest data and to nimbly adjust the season. This state-level approach provides far greater flexibility in fishery management versus the federal one-size-fits-all, static regulations. Anglers trust the state systems because they are responsive and the regulations match the conditions seen on the water. With an independent analysis of red snapper populations set to be released in the next few months, anglers are hopeful for continued gains in the management of the Gulf red snapper fishery.
