ORANGE BEACH BY: CAPT. JOHNNY WILLIS birds and surface activity as a large school of redfish will resemble small bombs going off under water. My approach has remained generally the same over the years with me using forty-pound monofilament leader about 18 inches long and a 1 ½ oz. Spro Bucktail jig. Also, if you happen to see a cluster of boats that seem bunched up, remain respectful and leave each other space, but definitely go over there and check it out, everything is easier when we communicate where the fish have been located as they tend to move a little each day. As for our captains in Pensacola and Orange Beach, we are constantly conversing and helping one another to find the fish and stay on them. Its important this time of the year because the more eyes on the water, the less driving we do to hunt them down. The biggest tip I can give is just to be constantly paying attention and looking for any kind of activity on the water. We will be filming another episode with Bob Refern and the Pursuit Channel, so keep an eye out for that as well. We still have a few dates left, so please give us a call and let’s go fishing.

have thousands of redfish pouring down into our beaches and bays. Until around January you will want to keep your eyes open for crashing

MOBILE / DAUPHIN ISLAND BY: CAPT. CHARLIE GRAY

T

he turkey gobbled was smoked, fried and eaten and, with that, the cooler days and nights prevail. November started off warm and slow but ended up cooler with more fish schooling up. Things should progress into December before the really cold months of January and February make fishing more difficult. With the colder air and water temperatures, the speckled trout will move into the deeper parts of the rivers that feed into Mobile Bay, Fowl River Bay, Grand Bay, Portersville Bay and others. When it’s colder the trout will hold up in the deeper holes of these rivers like Fowl River, Dog River, Little River and Bayou La Batre. The deeper holes are often

found where the river makes a hard bend; Fish a Carolina rig or slip cork rig deep and on the ledges around these holes with a live shrimp if you can still find them, if not use a Vu Du shrimp or shrimp imitation; I have great success with the Vudu in natural, Cajun pepper, gold and brown varieties and I also add a little Vudu shrimp scent to help attract fish to the bait. For redfish try the same tactic, although you can use a dead shrimp fished on the bottom, or smaller finger mullet, mud minnows or bull minnows. If you are fishing a dead shrimp on the bottom, don’t let it just sit on the bottom, bounce or pull it along the bottom ever so slowly, do not rush or hurry the presentation. The fish are sluggish now in this cooler water and expect the baits to be slow as well. You need a slooooow presentation. Also, don’t be afraid to try these same baits under a popping cork in the shallower waters. On the warmer days ahead of a cold or warm front (if we get lucky!) fish the flats in these rivers around the holes. The fish will move into the shallow water as the day heats up. The mud bottom and oyster shell bottoms heat up quicker than some other areas. You have to have some tidal movement in these rivers to have success; when the tide is slack you seldom have any action. Often, just as soon as the tide starts to move either way, in or out, the fish will begin to feed. Watch your water in these shallow rivers, you may get in an area when the tide seems high, but a north wind and a falling tide may strand you on a mud flat. Be alert and

careful, always pay attention to the conditions, they can change quickly this time of year. We are still fishing and booking trips through these cooler months, call us, Lets go fishing! Remember, we don’t hunt, we just fish, take a kid fishing. Still you can’t decide what to get that special someone in your life for Christmas? How about an inshore fishing trip with Gray Gulf Charters and Capt Charlie Gray! Purchase a fishing trip between now and Christmas and receive 10% off. You will receive a gift certificate that can be wrapped up or placed in a card Or of you would prefer, you can call and book any available date in 2019. KAYAK REPORT BY: BENTON PARROTT

A

s the weather and water gets colder look for deeper holes that the fish will stack up in. Structure in the rivers can be good as well with fish hanging around. Fish often become lethargic as the water temperatures drop. Fish slow and low bouncing your lure off the bottom. During these cold days I like to use soft plastics like a Saltwater Assassin sea shad on a ¼ oz. jig head or a sinking corky. Look for flats near drop offs that will heat up quicker during a sunny day. Fish these flats in the afternoon where fish will come to feed. I will work the flats with a Rapala Shadow Rap Shad making a few twitches and letting the bait pause

while taking the slack out of the line. Even with the water temperature down I will still work a topwater late in the evening on drop offs to deeper water on the edge of these flats. Slowing down my retrieve to a crawl has produced some solid trout over the years as they are looking for one good meal. I am still finding reds cruising close to the bank along the grass lines looking to eat. There isn’t anything going on as far as tournaments in January, but start looking ahead to next year. Take the time to clean up and organize your gear and get ready for the Spring bite. Add that depth finder or anchor system you have been wanting. In the spring there will be the B.C.K.F.C Paddlepalooza14 in Louisiana, G.C.K.F.A. Spring Tournament in Pensacola, Fl., and the M.B.K.F.A Bagwell tournament in Dauphin Island, AL. Also, a lot of these groups have an all year online tournament for club members. Go to their sites for more details and to get signed up. All are great tournaments where you can have a great time and meet new anglers. We always have a list of upcoming events on our Kayak Fishing U Facebook page. Always dress for the water temperature and not the air. One wrong move could spell disaster if you aren’t prepared. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360-degree light on at dark and low light

conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan. Benton Parrott Hobie Regional Team / Pro Staff Fishing Guide dbparrott@bellsouth.net

TAKE A KID FISHING BY: RICH ELLISON

I

f you’re reading this, you love to fish. There’s no getting around it, you are combing through this publication looking for tips on your favorite subject; fishing! I’m not naïve, you may just take a pit stop here on your way to the Dauphin Island report. Or perhaps you follow FOUR TIME IFA Kayak Champ Benton Parrott; who also fishesNOW with his own photographer in tow! Whatever the reason, I am grateful you stopped by for a few. Fishing is pretty great right now, but I wanted to change it up a little this month. We owe it to the next generation to teach them how to fish. I know we all look forward to our precious time off work and on the water. If you want to see what pure unfiltered joy looks like; take a kid fishing! I have 3 myself with #4 due in February.

My boy Shepherd, aka Strongbad, has been on me to get in the Hobie for quite some time. This Halloween I obliged his request and he opted out of the Devil’s holiday for his maiden voyage in my old war horse ;) We launched with an hour of light remaining, so he could get comfortable in the boat. I didn’t know if we would get to fish, or if this was to be solely a scouting adventure. Either way, you couldn’t wipe the smile off the boy’s face. As it so happened, he was a natural. It was very windy in Weeks Bay, but he followed my commands and did very well on the water. I was pleased enough with his boatmanship that we covered about ¾ of a mile before turning around. The first dock light we came to had a couple that invited us to fish; which was surely because of the sweet 8-year-old in tow. However, once we got up closer my very proud son announced, “My dad writes for Coastal Angler, and he catches big fish here ALL THE TIME!” So, we didn’t stay there very long. Thanks,

Shep. We wrapped up the trip at the very first dock light I ever fished; when I started obsessively doing this nearly a decade ago. By now it was good and dark. The fish were on fire, and jumbo shrimp were walking on water. My tackle is too large for Shep in good conditions, much less windy dark of night. He held his boat against mine while I struggled to make good casts. When I finally put it in the sweet spot, pay dirt! I passed the rod and little man landed a dandy pup red! Shep got to catch a couple reds and a nice white trout. We called it a win and headed home. A few things I would caution if you’re taking kids on the water. Keep them in an appropriate life vest. Make sure they have reflective markings and preferable a whistle, in case you’re separated. It’s not a bad idea to have some rope, if the need arises to tie them to you. We were in sheltered, shallow water with no real hazards & near shore; but once I had my son with me, I realized just how quickly a nightmare scenario could present itself to the unprepared. I see folks on the water pretty regular with small kids in the kayak with

them. To each their own, but I sure wouldn’t do it. Taking Shepherd Brooks kayak fishing for the first time on Halloween night is something neither of us will soon forget. I hope that if you have the opportunity to share your love of this sport with kids, you will do it. Hey, one day we will be old and may need the favor returned! ecember is upon us and that means the start of winter fishing. This fall has been a little less than normal for trout fishing on the causeway. That is no surprise after all the rain we had this year. The water is a little muddy and in the mid 60’s. It should be getting cooler with each passing cold front. Trout are in the rivers that run under I-10. As the water cools this month, they will be moving south. Live shrimp have proved to be most productive. Artificial bait guys will find a soft plastic on a 3/8 oz jig head worked slowly on the bottom will also produce a few fish. I like a High Tide natural shrimp, but root beer/ chartreuse, chartreuse/red, and white/chartreuse are also worth trying. Fishing for reds has been pretty good in North Pass, Daphne, and the other cuts just south of the causeway. This should continue for a few weeks or our next big rain. A live or dead shrimp on a carolina rig is a good bet. Soft plastics on

’s Mobile ha Yama ONLY ter Mas ian Technic

jig heads are also productive. A 3/8 oz head with chartreuse or root beer are my two favorite colors. I also look for the tide to be low and still falling for the best timing in these ditches. As winter closes in, I’ll be headed for the gulf to chase the salty water. But for spec action, I’ll look in the rivers that flow into the bay. Fish, Magnolia, Fowl, and Bon Secure are a good bet. Fish the banks for reds and toward the deeper part in the center for trout. A falling tide with slow working jig head on the bottom is usually productive. A 3/8 oz jig head to be sure you are on the bottom is my preference. A Mirrolure glad shad is another one of my favorite baits for winter trout. Winter is on the way, so get ready to head for your winter time fishing holes. Get after the trout before they go to sleep for the winter.

ovember provided some great fishing nearshore and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore bottom fishing was awesome with catches of gag grouper, red grouper, scamp grouper, vermillion snapper, white snapper and wahoo. This good bite should continue into December. Nearshore trolling has produced some king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. We should also see this fishing continue into December. The bull redfish should also be found in December within a couple of miles. Vermillion snapper can be caught within 15 miles if you are looking for some tasty fish. Red snapper and triggerfish can be caught but must be released. The weather can be cool or very nice. Enjoy some December fishing off the Alabama Gulf Coast. Capt. LAKE MARTIN BY: CAPT DAVID B. HARE

H

ere it is first of November as I write the forecast for December on Lake Martin. I actually just got off the water and had very productive striper day before the rain storms ran us off the water. The photo of my Hummingbird Helix 12 that’s posted here with this article is showing a massive school of stripers and bait that I was fishing in today. This is a very good example of what you need to be looking for in December to have a successful day on Lake Martin. These fish were from surfacing on top to being very deep. I caught stripers out of this school today using top water jerk baits, crank baits and then even trolled some lures thru them just to see what all they would hit. They wore out everything I approached them with. I know I didn’t mention my favorite which is live bait but I actually was just proving a point that when the bites on that other ways of fishing for stripers will work for you but I promise you that very seldom you’ll see our guide boats out without having live bait ready and available for the ultimate trip of a lifetime. This month keep a keen eye out for fish on top by watching for them to bust the top, birds diving on bait fish, an occasional bald eagle swooping down on a fish and don’t overlook the diving ducks feeding on baitfish and you’ll find huge schools

of stripers and maybe even schools of spotted bass. December is one of my favorite months for not just quality stripers but huge quantities in a short six hour trip last December I had a group of clients that boated and released 67 fish (stripers and bass) in 3&1/2 hrs. it was as exciting as it gets , we had numerous December trips that we boated and released 40 plus fish. So, I’m just saying get out of the house and go have some fun this December and it’ll make you forget about all the stress your day to day life may have. Save time on your Christmas shopping this year and get your favorite person, boss or better yet your family a gift certificate from Alex City Guide Service. Call or text me and I’ll handle it. SEA NO LIMITS FISHING CLINIC BY: CAM STAFF

T

he 6th Annual Sea No Limits Fishing Clinic is a completely free fishing clinic that was held on Saturday October 6th, at the Vince J. Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park for 250 Special Needs citizens with physical or intellectual impairments who require adult supervision. Hosted by the Gulf Breeze Masonic Lodge in proud partnership with the City of Pensacola, the mission of the Sea No Limits Fishing Clinic is to provide the community of physically and intellectually challenged citizens in the Pensacola area with an opportunity to learn how to experience the joy and exhilaration of catching a fish of their very own in a dedicated, fun–filled and safe environment catered to their Special Needs. Hosting an event like the Sea No Limits certainly makes a positive difference in the lives of these challenged families. A 4-Station Fishing Clinic helped teach citizens: 1. “Good Angler” proper

fishing etiquette. 2. “Tackle/Knot Tying” 3. “Where Fish Live” Live touch tank 4. “Casting” one-on-one casting instruction. Special mention must be given to the generosity of Fish Florida and the Pensacola Recreational Fisherman’s Association. We simply could not have hosted these first 3 clinics without the support of Fish Florida or the PRFA. We believe that making a positive difference in the lives of others make us better men. If you would like to register your loved one with Special Needs, volunteer, sponsor or support the Sea No Limits Fishing Clinic in any manner please call Scott at (850) 341-5036 or email Scott at saharms64@yahoo.com or visit our web site at www.SeaNoLimits.com

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
