Editor’s Note - sMpwdkI “Don’t Lose Your Head In a Difficult Situation…”

Dilbag (Ron) Dhaliwal

When I was a teen, my mom said the above lines to me and initially, the words were difficult to completely understand; until, she explained them to me in simple terms. She said that our brain controls our body and our actions, and this is the only part of our body that thinks. During a difficult time, we invest even more concentration to get out of the situation, and if you get upset, your brain can’t think properly and can’t give you the right decision. Rather, with an upset mind, most people make a wrong decision, which usually only makes the situation worse. Since the day my mom explained this to me, I’ve kept that principle in mind and whenever I get into such a situation, the first thing I say to myself is, “Keep yourself calm and don’t lose your head;” so far, have been able to successfully get out of these situations. In our industry, we spend most of the time on the road, usually under pressure to reach our destinations on time. At the same time, we have to deal many ignorant moves by other drivers that drive us crazy. We may also have issues with our dispatchers, shippers, or receivers. But remember that if there is a problem, there is also a solution and our priority should be to keep our head calm and find the right solution to solve the problem. There is a problem of undercutting of prices and although this is an issue in almost every industry, it is very prevalent in trucking. Let’s do the math? You can work 8 hours for $20/hr or work 20 hours for $8/hr. You need money to pay the bills but at the same time, you need quality time for yourself and your family. The choice is yours. As always, I wish you good luck and say, “God always bless Truckers.”

voters, offer to study the “problem” and make recommendations. When governments start to study anything, they form massively populated organizations, empires, that become self-serving and whether or not there is value in the organization, it maintains momentum forever. Yes, there were, and continue to be, horrible incidents in which people have died as a result of fatigue often exacerbated by the use of drugs or alcohol. Compliance has become one of those buzz words that has led to and developed its own industry. The use of drugs or alcohol by commercial drivers, as a result of education and compliance regulations, has become almost negligible. Drivers, who need to keep their jobs, simply will not put their jobs in jeopardy by using drugs or alcohol in case they are required to drive before the effects are cleared from their bodies. Compliance in and of itself makes infinite sense and has become as necessary for a trucking company as breathing for humans. Compliance allows companies to absolutely prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they take safety seriously, thus mitigating any legal problems caused by unnecessary incidents that have led to death or maiming. No matter how compliant a truck driver is, there will be times that he or she will not be able to perform up to maximum hours of service. Human drivers are subject to headaches and even seasonal allergies that can make being fully alert constantly impossible. Human drivers still do not have the ability to turn the sleep switch on and off at will, and frankly they never will. If a human driver can’t find the ability to rest and sleep, then for

sure, the next day is going to be challenge. Hours of Service is no longer the maximum number of hours a driver can work; it is now virtually a mandate that those hours available while remaining compliant are the minimum hours available while being compliant. Maximums are also minimums. There is no such thing as a driver being able to determine his or her own state of tiredness or alertness. Drivers must comply to the maximums which is also the minimum, with no if’s, but’s, or maybe’s. Fatigue is still an issue but it’s exacerbated because of compliance, which makes no sense. The law of unintended consequence has reared its ugly head. How can rules and regulations designed specifically to prevent fatigue work to the detriment of an individual’s well-being? Specifically, the wellbeing of the truck driver strictly complying with all the rules and regulations. Rules and regulations aren’t necessarily the problem, but certainly some of the interpretation of the rules by some are. The ELD, Electronic Logging Device, will certainly assist in accurately tracking a truck driver’s work, which is a good thing. What’s not so good is that ELD’s are precise and not open to tampering. Some of the rules and regulations need to be changed to permit a driver from working beyond their capacity to work. Drivers do not need to be told when they are tired; they need the ability to take a nap when they need the nap, regardless of what time of day it is. The ability for a driver to stop and have a rest that accounts for the total number of hours of sleep in any 24 hour period while waiting out rush hour, for example, would make for much safer roads, ease the congestion in major metropolitan areas, and make for a much more rested commercial driver. There used to be a regulation where a driver could split his or her sleep into smaller chunks of rest and smaller chunks of work. Some would work four hours, sleep four hours while others would work five hours and rest five hours; some would even work their full ten, then rest for ten. It was up to the driver to decide when he or she was tired and when rest was needed. Then, some well-meaning civil servant decided the hours of service needed to be a strictly interpreted rule that every single human driver would comply, regardless of how they functioned, how they felt physically or mentally, and in essence, turning drivers into robots in human bodies. The ELD is going to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Allow the truck driver to use the ELD to his or her benefit while remaining absolutely compliant and while working productively for the maximum/minimum hours available to them every day. If properly used, the ELD could be the best tool for the driver to work to his or her best efficiency within their particular situation each day. The ELD could make for the happiest, safest drivers on the planet if the rules and regulations are modified to ensure the human factor is respected and that daily modifications in ability are the norm and not the exception. Fatigue isn’t going to be fought with rules, regulations or legislation – rather, it’s going to be fought by each and every individual to know their personal limitations and react to their own personal needs, rather than being driven to meet unreasonable expectations that not even a robot could attain. Eliminate those rules, regulations and legislation that prevents personal decisions and safer roads will be a direct result. 12

Just say NO to Commercializing Rest Areas

A

diverse coalition of stakeholders, ranging from restaurants and fuel retailers to city governments and trucking firms, have written a letter urging key lawmakers to oppose efforts to commercialize Interstate rest areas as Congress considers infrastructure legislation. Two U.S. Representatives’ recent proposal to allow the sale of food, fuel and other commercial services at Interstate rest areas would drain local businesses of customers, communities of much-needed jobs, and city governments of critical tax revenue by putting established businesses in direct competition with state governments, the letter states. At the same time, it would give the state an unfair competitive advantage by granting the state direct access to highway motorists, the groups said. “Congress effectively privatized highway services in 1960, when Congress prohibited states from offering commercial services at rest areas along the Interstate Highway System specifically so that private sector entities would grow and provide services to the traveling public,” said NATSO President and CEO Lisa Mullings. “Established businesses including travel plazas, convenience stores, restaurants and hotels are already meeting the needs of highway travellers. “If the government gets in the business of selling food and fuel or other commercial services, local communities will suffer as tax revenues shift to the state; hard-working business owners will lose their customer base; blind entrepreneurs will be out of work and truck drivers will have a harder time finding a safe place to rest. Commercializing Interstate rest areas would create far more problems than it will solve,” Mullings said. In many rural communities located near Interstates, gas stations, restaurants, convenience stores, truckstops, and hotels represent the largest local taxpayers, contributing more than $22.5 billion in state and local taxes. These funds help support schools, police and fire departments and other vital public services. “By commercializing rest areas, cities and towns stand to lose critical revenue used for funding road maintenance, building schools and keeping communities safe,” said Clarence E. Anthony, CEO and executive director of the National League of Cities. “Such a move would risk flatlining local property tax revenues, especially impacting the hundreds of small cities and rural communities whose economies depend on highway travellers.” Lea Dias, President of the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind, said, “NCSAB is extremely concerned about the implications of rest area commercialization for thousands of small family businesses, including those owned and operated by blind entrepreneurs. Under the Randolph-Sheppard Act, a federal law that supports entrepreneurial opportunities for persons who are blind, permits are awarded to blind vendors to manage vending locations at rest areas along federal interstates. Commercialization of these rest areas would result in significant loss of sales opportunities at 14

highway exits, as well as for rest area vending machines, that would be unable to compete with larger rest area food services. “This economic disruption to small family businesses, including those owned by entrepreneurs who are blind, and to the communities that they live in, would likely shift economic activity from small businesses to large corporations,” Dias said. “It would also shift tax revenue from cities and counties, without necessarily increasing

net jobs, sales, or taxes paid. As the agencies that administer the Randolph-Sheppard Act, we urge policymakers to examine carefully the impact on small businesses, including those owned by blind entrepreneurs, of commercialization of rest areas along federal interstates. “There is already an unacceptably high unemployment rate of approximately 70 percent among blind Americans,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “Congress should not contribute to the problem by putting the blind entrepreneurs who service rest area vending machines out of work.” Congress reaffirmed its position on this issue as recently as 2012, when the Senate voted 86 to 12 to uphold the longstanding federal law prohibiting the sale of food, fuel and other convenience items from Interstate rest areas. The letters to Congress, one to the House and one to the Senate, were signed by NATSO, Asian American Hotel Owners Association, International Franchise Association, National Association of Convenience Stores, National Automatic Merchandising Association, National Council of Chain Restaurants, National Federation of the Blind, National Franchisee Association, National League of Cities, National Restaurant Association, National Tank Truck Carriers, Petroleum Marketers Association of America, and the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America.

Give the Bank What it Wants bYNk jo mMgdy hn auh swrI sUcnw aunHW nUM idE

I

often refer mortgage deals to banks and mortgage brokers and help prepare my clients for the purchase of their first home. I decided to speak to an actual bank to share some insight of the things that are common to applications that need to be addressed. Commonly rental income is not declared on taxes due to the belief that more taxes will have to be paid. The bank advised this is an ignorant thing to do. With a good accountant, the increase in income can be written down to zero or minimal amounts, so that your taxes do not go up. Expenses such as the mortgage payments, property taxes, and maintenance for the year are all declared. For example if $1000/month rental income is being mYN Awm qOr ‘qy swrIAW mwrgyj fIlW bYNkW ‘qy mwrgyj bRokrW collected, an extra $12,000 in income a year can be used by the koL hI ByjdI hW Aqy ies qrHW Awpxy klwieMtW dI mwrgyj lYx ‘c bank. they were declined because no assets were in their name and they had declared a low income. The bank called me after and said if the client had assets in their own name, they may have over looked the low income, but with both low income AND no assets, they declined the deal. A reasonable amount of income must be declared on your income taxes. The banks will look at the previous two years. The suggestion offered by the bank was to do a mortgage or loan preapproval prior to looking for a home. And to also consult with the mortgage broker or banker you are using prior to the application to make sure enough income is declared, so that you don’t run in to issues after. Lines of credit are a big point of contention from the banks perspective. The words said were, “What is everyone’s obsession with giant unsecured lines of credit and why do they have so many of them?” They said it’s a common and large issue. It actually affects what the client can qualify for. So the home you want, may now be out of your price range due to the lines of credit. The bank suggests working on paying off

unsecured debt in advance of doing an application for a mortgage or loan. That way, you won’t be disappointed and have to get a smaller home. The item that seemed to be the most annoying thing from the banks perspective was long trips overseas, and not paying the bills while gone. So in other words, their credit is now bad. If you plan to go away for several months, that is fine, but you must make arrangements to pay your bills on time while you’re gone. Keep your credit intact no matter how long you are away. It will remain on your record for seven years, and banks are not very forgiving or like to hear excuses such as, “I was in India.” There are no excuses. Take responsibility for your credit and keep it intact. I hope this helps you in your future applications. Please make sure to declare enough income on your taxes, declare rental income in your taxes, have assets in your name, pay off the unsecured lines of credit in advance and keep your credit intact especially while travelling for extended periods of time. If you follow these recommendations, then it will be a much easier process when applying for loans and mortgages. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your financial advisor, or feel free to contact myself with any questions. 18

Brake Safety Day Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017

T

ruckers have a few months to get those brakes in order. Brake Safety Day is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, according to a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance press

release. Inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Inspections conducted will include inspection of brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. ABS malfunction indicator lamps are also checked. Inspectors will measure pushrod stroke, where applicable. Vehicles with defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will be placed out of service. In the 10 jurisdictions using performance-based brake testing (PBBT) equipment, vehicle braking efficiency will be measured. PBBT systems include a slow speed roller dynamometer that measures total vehicle weight and total brake force from which braking efficiency is determined. The minimum braking efficiency for trucks is 43.5 percent, required by U.S. federal regulation and

the CVSA out-of-service criteria. Law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes, and brake-system and antilock braking system violations as part of the CVSA Operation Airbrake Program. Brake Safety Day activities seek to educate drivers, mechanics, owner-operators and

others on the importance of proper brake maintenance, operation and performance with outreach and educational efforts. Brake-related violations composed the largest percentage (representing 45.7 percent) of all out-of-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake’s companion International Roadcheck campaign in 2016, which focused on inspections of both commercial motor vehicles and drivers. For more information, go to CVSA.org.

Trucking Conditions Index for April bounced back

F

TR’s Trucking Conditions Index for April bounced back to a reading of 7.03, up more than four points from March. FTR Intel expects industry conditions to improve despite current year over year weakness in contract pricing. Freight demand is moving higher as the industrial sector continues to improve with capacity tightening. The first quarter of 2017 registered the second strongest freight growth of the current recovery. The remainder of 2017 is expected to grow more modestly. FTR forecasts the Trucking Conditions Index may fall off somewhat from the April reading in the next few months, but it is expected to remain in positive territory through 2018. Jonathan Starks, Chief Operating Officer at FTR, commented, “Overall, our expectation of improvements in freight demand for 2017 are coming to fruition. However, we are seeing a significant difference between the contract carriers, specifically those in more dedicated routes, and the spot market. Contract markets are showing limited load growth and weak pricing, but spot market indicators are telling a very different story. Data from Trans4Cast. com shows that spot market load activity in early June was up more than 50% compared to the same time last year. Importantly, truck capacity in the spot market is down during that same time. This has led to significant rate increases for spot moves, with the average rate up more than 10% on a year-over-year basis. We typically see spot markets move prior to the contract arena, so we would expect to see stronger contract pricing negotiations as we finish 2017 and head into 2018. The market is gaining strength, and conditions for carriers are showing significant improvements.” The Trucking Conditions Index tracks the changes representing six major conditions in the U.S. truck market. These conditions are:

freight volumes, freight rates, fleet capacity, fleet bankruptcies, fuel price, and financing. The individual metrics are combined into a single index that tracks the market conditions that influence fleet behaviour. A positive score represents good, optimistic conditions. A negative score represents bad, pessimistic conditions. The index tells you the industry’s health at a glance. In life, running a fever is an indication of a health problem. It may not tell you exactly what’s wrong, but it alerts you to look deeper. Similarly, a reading well below zero on the FTR Trucking Conditions Index warns you of a problem…. and readings high above zero spell opportunity. Readings near zero are consistent with a neutral operating environment. Double digit readings, either positive or negative numbers, are warning signs for significant operating changes.

International Truck make Bendix Air Disc Brakes Standard

I

nternational Truck, a division of Navistar Inc., is making Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes standard on all the axles of its International LT Series tractor in 6x4, 6x2, and 4x2 configurations. Navistar said the ADB22X from Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC features a patented lightweight design that significantly reduces stopping distance and extends brake system life.

Dispatching a

Freight Order

D

(P&D) truck, or a full tractor-trailer combination. In each case, the dispatcher must ensure that the trailer is suitable for loading, unloading and carrying the load. Consideration has to be given for government regulations, equipment profiles, driver’s profiles, fleet status, and outside carrier company contacts. Government Regulations: As the trucks use public roads, they are governed by federal as well as provincial legislature. These regulations ensure that trucks operate safely. Also, the trucks haul freight for virtually every other industry, so to some extent fall under the regulatory purview of these other industries; for example, livestock hauling comes under regulations on the handling of animals, and the transport of nuclear wastes comes under dangerous goods handling regulations. Some trucks cross jurisdictional boundaries, meaning their operators come into contact with different rules and tax regimes as they vary from government to government. The dispatcher needs to be aware of all such rules and regulations. There are government guidelines on how many hours the drivers can drive continually and how many hours of complete rest is required. When scheduling drivers, the dispatcher needs to consider these factors when making decisions. He/she must ensure that the driver has sufficient hours available to move the load to its final or intermediate destination by its due date and time. This consideration reduces the probability of accidents. Equipment Profiles: The dispatcher needs to possess a thorough understanding of all the equipment (trucks and trailers). The regular maintenance schedules like emission tests, brake checkups, oil and lube change, transmission checkups and sticker/plate renewals must be considered before scheduling any equipment for any order. The equipment needs to be compliant with the freight’s requirements. Specialized freights like produce, chemicals, liquid, medicine or automobiles need to be assigned with appropriate equipment. Knowledge of 1. Receiving the Order specialized equipment like reefers, drop decks, flat beds 2. Assigning the Order and tank containers helps in determining the proper 3. Managing the Order match of equipment with freight. 4. Billing the Order Driver’s Profiles: The dispatcher needs to know 5. Closing the Order all the driver’s profiles. trained and certified to handle those goods. All the drivers must be treated fairly when assigning the loads based on their experience, commitment, specialized skills and personal preferences. Fleet Status: The dispatcher needs to keep a close eye on all of the fleet. What is the status of existing orders? How many orders are ready to be dispatched at a particular time? How many trucks are on the road? What truck, trailer or driver is currently available to be assigned for dispatch? The knowledge of the current status of different forequipment our dedicated Company and drivers can prevent conflicts in dispatching. Partner Carrier Company Profiles: The dispatcher needs to be aware of all of their partner carrier companies. A contact list of all these companies needs to be maintained. In the situation where the dispatcher’s own resources are completely booked, these contacts can be approached for outsourcing the loads. Policies and procedures on who to contact should already be in place. The rate and payment terms should be negotiated up-front. Insurance coverage as well as partner carrier’s authorities and permits needs to be verified for full compliance and coverage. The knowledge and responsibility of a dispatcher is the key determinant factor in the successful execution of a freight order. Keeping customers informed about the latest status of their freight and providing them with an accurate ETA (estimated time of arrival) is very important.

Mitchell and Bosch Collaborate on Diagnostic Systems

M

itchell is collaborating with Bosch Automotive Service Solutions in North America to deliver the Mitchell Diagnostics system, which is designed specifically for the collision repair and automotive claims markets. The Mitchell Diagnostics system is expected to be available by June 30. “We researched a wide variety of scan tools on the market and found that the Bosch scan tools provide best-in-class coverage and modern technology, and are backed by great service and support,” said Jack Rozint, vice president of sales and service at Mitchell International. “In addition, Bosch scan tools have a combination of features that provide outstanding capabilities for collision repairers, including a tool that can do Electronic Control Unit (ECU) reprogramming, as well as optional accessories that include a target system for recalibrating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) kit. We are excited to partner with Bosch given its leadership and expertise in this market.” The patent-pending Mitchell Diagnostics system validates that the VIN on the scan report matches the VIN on the vehicle from which data is pulled. This scan report can be used to support collision repair billing, and offers both carriers and repairers a record showing that the vehicle had a clean scan at the completion of the collision repair process. “Mitchell’s reputation and success among information providers

for being a leader in advanced repair technologies made it the ideal choice to bring diagnostic solutions to the collision repair industry,” said Stefan Schmitt, vice president of engineering and product area diagnostics at Bosch Automotive Service Solutions. “Working with Mitchell will integrate our scan tool directly into the workflow applications used by collision repairers and insurance carriers, which will assist in the diagnostic portion of collision repairs.” The system may be used to add scan reports to any of the industry’s major estimating, collision repair management and claims processing systems. These scan reports can be saved as PDF documents and dropped into a folder used for vehicle damage images by the user of the Mitchell Diagnostics system. Customers that utilize Mitchell Estimating advanced estimating system and RepairCenter shop management software will benefit from enhanced integration capabilities. “One of the challenges we have is documenting, confirming, and getting compensated for the scanning that we do in-house,” said Bill Lawrence of 1st Certified Collision Group, a multisite collision repair operation in Southern California. “With the Mitchell Diagnostics system we’ll be able to demonstrate via validation documentation that the work was performed on the vehicle with the VIN matching the insurers’ claim, and we can easily attach that to our repair order and the carrier’s claim file.”

AT Solutions announced it completed integrated its carrier features into the AscendTMS for carriers, and it will be offered at no cost to current and future DAT carrier customers. DAT: Load-to-Truck Ratios jump sharply

L

oad-to-truck ratios for spot truckload freight jumped sharply for all three equipment types during the week ending June 10, with the van ratio reaching its highest point in three years, said DAT Solutions. The number of available loads on DAT load boards was up 30% compared to the previous week, which was shortened by the Memorial Day holiday and included the annual Roadcheck inspection blitz. A 20% increase is more in line with expectations. Brokers and shippers paid a premium for capacity in most major markets and lanes. Load-to-truck ratios reflected the increased freight activity: • Van ratio: 5.7 loads per truck, up 12% • Reefer ratio: 10.1, up 33% • Flatbed ratio: 49.2, up 27% Van Trends Nationally, the number of posted van loads increased 12% while truck posts were 8% higher. The national average van rate gained 6 cents to $1.79/mile, continuing a run of week-over-week increases. Outbound rates were up in almost every major van freight market: • Los Angeles: $2.28/mile, up 10 cents • Chicago: $2.06/mile, up 6 cents • Dallas: $1.76/mile, up 3 cents • Charlotte: $2.16/mile, up 11 cents • Philadelphia: $1.73/mile, up 5 cents Of the top 100 van lanes, only 26 had lower rates. Reefer Trends Reefer load posts increased 30% while truck posts fell 2%, which helped move the national average rate 7 cents higher to $2.11/mile. California shipments are expected to stay strong at least through the Fourth of July, and a few lanes crossed the $3 mark: • Fresno-Denver surged 61 cents to $3.14/mile • Los Angeles-Portland, Oregon, was up 45 cents to $3.33/mile • Sacramento-Portland added 50 cents to 3.21/mile • Sacramento-Salt Lake City rose 27 cents to an average of $3.00/mile Florida outbound rates tumbled, including Lakeland-Charlotte, which plunged 84 cents to an average of $1.82/ mile. Flatbed Trends The flatbed load-to-truck ratio skyrocketed as load posts increased 38% while truck posts increased 9%. The

national average rate increased 3 cents last week to $2.15/mile, the highest weekly average rate in nearly two years. Flatbed demand can be volatile and shifts on a lane-by-lane basis. Key movers last week: Las Vegas ($2.82/mile, up 36 cents), Cleveland ($2.31/ mile, up 11 cents), and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania ($3.41/mile, up 2 cents). Rates are derived from DAT RateView, which provides real-time reports on prevailing spot market and contract rates, as well as historical rate and capacity trends. All reported rates include fuel surcharges.

Stay Healthy On The Road pihlW ishq jrUrI Aw!

sVk ‘qy c`ldy smyN ikvyN rihxw hY ishqmMd!!! Get Adequate Sleep Getting adequate sleep is important for your health. Harvard Medical School has suggested that sleep plays an important role in memory and learning. A sleep-deprived person has shown the inability to focus and learn new tasks efficiently. Driving long distances requires focus; therefore, sleep is very important for any truck driver. Sleeping in the truck or in a hotel bed doesn’t always lead to a good night of sleep, but there are plenty of ways to get an even better night of sleep. Buying a white noise machine or the right pillow for your sleeping style can help with getting a full night of rest to keep you focused on the road. Eat Healthy Eating healthy can improve your overall health in many ways. Eating less process foods and more vegetables and fruits can help you lose weight, boost your immune system, and get a better night of sleep. Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants and vitamins that can help protect you from a cold or flu. Studies have shown that vitamin C can help combat germs. You’ll find these germ-fighting vitamins in foods such as berries, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, and many other fruits and vegetables. Quit Smoking Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventative disease and death in the world. Over 390,000 Americans die from smoking-related diseases every year. By quitting smoking you can decrease your risk of heart disease, cancer, and other smoking-related diseases. Manage Your Diabetes Diabetes is an important disease that truckers need to learn to manage due to the nature of your job. Your job depends on it! A 2009 study found that commercial truck drivers have a 50% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to the 34

general population and 87% of truck drivers have hypertension or pre-hypertension. By focusing on eating healthy, participating in physical activity, and working with your medical provider, your diabetes can be kept under control. Stay Up to Date on Vaccines Chances are you haven’t had a shot in many years. Many adults think because they received all their vaccines as a child that they have a lifetime of immunity against various diseases. But, that’s not true. Vaccine effectiveness wanes over time making you more susceptible to possibly contracting a disease that you thought you were immune against. Measles have been on the rise in the recent years especially among young children. Last month an outbreak in California occurred with patients ranging from 7 months to 70 years old. The CDC strongly urges adults to stay up to date on their vaccines to help prevent contracting preventive diseases. For more information about which vaccines you need as an adult, the CDC provides an excellent infographic. Drink Lots of Water Drinking water every day is essential to good health. Water can help regulate your body temperature, lubricate and cushion joints, and get rid of bodily waste through urination, sweat, and bowel movements. Drinking water also has been linked to weight loss because water makes people feel more full and consume fewer calories. The Institute of Medicine suggests that men should drink about 13 cups a day and women should drink about 9 cups of water a day. However, if you live in a hot climate or exercise a lot then you will most likely need even more water. Water can also come from foods, such as watermelon and celery. Exercise More Physical activity has many benefits to health. It can help you control your weight, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and strengthen your bones and muscles among many other reasons. The CDC suggests working out for at least 150 minutes a week at a moderate-intensity to maintain your weight or more if you need to lose weight and keep it off. Of course, eating a healthy diet will also help you lose weight. Strength training can help reduce hip fractures, arthritis and other diseases linked to bone density loss. If you are just starting to exercise, start small and build up to longer times. Exercise can include anything you like, such as walking, biking, martial arts, or swimming. Find something you like and commit to it! Reduce Stress Stress can be linked to a lot of negative feelings in life. Not all stress is bad, but if it has a negative impact on your physical and mental health then you should try to reduce your stress levels. The

American Psychological Association has found a link between chronic stress and physical health. Chronic stress can lead to disease, such as an increased risk of coronary disease, or lead to bad habits, such as overeating and smoking. The good news is that you can reduce your stress levels and increase your health! The American Psychological Association suggests reducing your stress by first identifying what the cause is. They also suggest getting more sleep and participating in relaxation exercises such as yoga or meditation. If nothing seems to help reduce your chronic stress, seek out your medical provider or a counselor. Take a Vacation When you run a small business or work for yourself, sometimes it’s hard to take time off for a vacation. A recent US Travel Association study found that the average American took 16 days of vacation time in 2013 compared to 20.3 days in 2000. Taking a vacation, whether it’s just a week at home or a week sitting on a tropical beach drinking Pina Coladas, can help you catch up on sleep and reduce your stress. Vacation also allows you to discover new parts of the world, different cultures and spend time with your family and friends. Spend Time with Loved Ones Being on the road for long periods of time can leave you missing your family and friends back home. When you’re home or on vacation spend time with them. Simple as that! One study conducted by Brigham Young University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that having strong social connections can boost longevity. Courtesy of www.thehealthytrucker.net

Kalmar Completes Expansion

K

almar announced it completed projects to enhance operational capabilities, efficiencies and safety at two of its parts facilities in the U.S. The first project was at the parts operation in Ottawa, KS, expanding the primary warehouse to 9,500 sq. ft., resulting in 40% more capacity for pallet storage and five additional packaging stations. The expansion also allows for inbound and outbound shipping operations to be separated which improves traffic patterns and safety throughout the warehouse, the company noted.

“With the expansion and new warehouse layout our employees are better able to complete their daily work in a much safer environment,” said David Hopkins, Ottawa Warehouse supervisor. “Separating shipping and receiving areas was a key to improving the work flows and better enables us to meet our customers’ needs.”

The entire warehouse was also converted to LED lighting for employees. In conjunction with the warehouse upgrades the entire facility received an update to the HVAC system which combined with the lighting updates have resulted in a 30% savings on electric utilities each month. According to the company, the Monroe, NJ, facility also underwent significant upgrades as part of the signing of a fiveyear lease extension which will mark 20 years at the current site. Office work areas were upgraded with a more efficient HVAC system along with cosmetic upgrades with new flooring and paint. Similar to the Ottawa facility the Monroe warehouse also underwent a lighting change to all LEDs, resulting in safer work environments and lower utility costs. “The upgrades to our facility are an indication of our commitment to the market and fully supporting the customers in the Northeast region,” said Lucinda Bass, Monroe Site Manager. Randy Vance, director of parts, Kalmar Americas echoed the comments saying, “The investments of the corporation to upgrade our facilities display our commitment to support Kalmar products from cradle to grave while ensuring the safety of our employees. These enhancements will allow us to grow the services business throughout the region.”

APNA Truck Show 2017 Sets New Records

Awpxw tr`k SoA ny isrijAw nvW ieqhws

T

he 2017 APNA Truck Show continued the trend of being the largest truck show in Wester Canada by setting new records. Everyone expected a great show and after two days, those expectations were met and exceeded. The management team of the APNA Truck Show is proud to report that the 2017 show was a great success, breaking all previous records. The first day started as a soggy one, but the afternoon brought sun and smiles. Crowds gathered, exhibitor booths were full, and when visitors left, there were smiles all around. This year, the biennial show, which took place at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC on June 10-11, set an all-time attendance records, with over 11,500 registered attendees and over 3,000 attendees who were let in due to the huge lines. Huge lines tend to be a common place at the APNA Truck Show, both inside and outside of the show. With almost 15,000 attendees, this year’s show surpassed the previous record set in 2015. In addition, exhibitor presence increased by 50%, again solidifying APNA’s popularity in Western Canada. Since 2010, the APNA Truck Show become to be known as the most anticipated truck show in Western Canada, with exhibitors and attendees coming from as far away as California and Toronto. This year, in conjunction with SafetyDriven, a Speaker Series was added, which included talks by retired CFL All-Star Shae Emery and dietician/media personality Diana Steele, as well as a COR Panel discussion, facilitated by Jag Dhatt and featured Earl Galavan, Colette Mondin, Brad Wilson, and Laurel O’Donnell. Last year, the APNA Truck Show gave away a custom-built Harley Davidson motorcycle valued at over $17, 000. This year, in association with Kingpin Trailers and Hyundai Translead, APNA Truck Show was proud to give away a 53-feet dry van trailer, valued at over $40, 000. very happy with the show this year and that we worked closely with the APNA team to make this trailer give-away possible. With all proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation, it’s a win-win for everybody involved.” When asked if Kingpin Trailers and Hyundai Translead would do something again for the next APNA Show, Schneider answered, “You BET!” After a very busy Saturday, guests looked forward to the Cocktail Party and VIP Dinner Event. These two events gave industry professionals a chance to mingle in a social setting, where they enjoyed great food and beverages. As in previous

years, the VIP Dinner Event is also the venue where funds are raised for a worthy cause. In 2015, the VIP Dinner Night raised over $23, 000 – this year, this year, we are pleased to announce that a record-setting $47, 500 was raised for the BC/Yukon Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation. generosity of those in the trucking industry, saying, “I cannot believe how giving the industry is. I certainly look forward to the next show.” Another highlight of the show was Ice Road trucker Lisa Kelly, who spent many hours both days taking pictures and signing autographs for her fans. Truckers and families from all over had a chance to take pictures with Lisa and talk to her about her life on the ice roads in northern Canada. Did we mention that the Michelin man came all the way from Montreal to be at the APNA Truck Show? Children met and hugged the Michelin man, who said very little but smiled a lot. Finally, the Job Fair was a huge success at this year’s truck show. Some of Canada’s top transport companies met with potential recruits. We look forward to having even more companies at the next event. From all feedback, both during and after the show, the 2017 APNA Truck Show proved to be extremely successful. The management team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors, attendees, and volunteers who made this show possible. We look forward to seeing you in 2019! 42

Keeping your truck/trailer cool during the hot summers

grmIAW ‘c Awpxy tr`k Aqy tRylr nMU ikvyN TMFw r`KIey G. Ray Gompf

I

t’s a fact, in summer we get some pretty significantly hot temperatures even if our cousins to the south think we live in igloos and shovel snow twelve months a year. Those hot temperatures can play havoc with truck, trailer and driver. For the driver, air conditioning in the cab is not just a creature comfort add on, but virtually a necessity even though those politicians who work for us think it’s a extravagance to be taxed. I don’t see one of them without an air conditioned office nor their air conditioned limo but that’s a whole different story. In the old days, we had 2/60 air conditioning, you opened two windows, and drove sixty miles an hour. Oh yes, there also was this flip up vent on the hood of the tractor that when opened fed outside air into the cab but again, you had to be travelling at speed in order to feel the effects. It didn’t do much to cool the body down. It was only cooling for the driver in the respect that hot air moving quickly could have a cooling effect but really it didn’t do a whole lot. Today’s air conditioning is quite efficient at keeping the interior cab temperature at a comfortable level. And, it’s not just comfort, but safety. Comfortable temperature can mean the difference between driving tired and driving alert. Maintaining the air conditioning system at top working level is therefore a matter of safety. Drivers are having less and less time available to make decisions based on their own well being due to the regulatory interference, so making them as comfortable for as long as possible is truly a matter of good corporate governance. 44

Now keeping the power unit running efficiently is even more important to maintaining the service level customers expect. Keeping the engine running at the proper temperature, especially during the wild swings in ambient temperatures in this country, is beyond a challenge. Fortunately, with today’s anti-freeze the challenge becomes considerably less. Yes, antifreeze has value in keeping the hot temperatures at bay, too. Note here about anti-freeze. Do not leave it laying around where animals have access to it. Anti-freeze tastes sweet to them, like candy to us, and is deadly poison. It can and has killed creatures large and small. So, always store unused anti-freeze properly making sure it’s tightly contained. And don’t flush used anti-freeze down the drain. Dispose of it properly as the hazardous material it is. Getting back to the cooling system of the power unit of the truck. Make sure the radiator cap is working maintaining the pressure required by your system. If it isn’t, replace it. Make sure all the hose connections are not leaking, that flexible parts are not worn, cracked or in danger of failure in the immediate future. Check the radiator for stone chips where leaks could become an issue. Periodically, wash those bugs out of the radiator making sure as much air passes through the radiator as possible. If you use a bug screen in front of the radiator, clean it often. Remember that while the average automobile is travelling 20,000 kilometres a

year where it can get away with these coolant checks twice a year, your truck is travelling ten times that and requires coolant system checks ten times as often, too. Which when you think about it, requires you to do these maintenance issues every two weeks or less. Now, unlike car drivers, you inspect your vehicle daily so doing regular checks on the coolant system shouldn’t be a big issue. Another big item on the check list when running in hot temperature summers is brakes. Make sure the brakes are clean and can keep as cool as required under operation. You don’t want to experience brake fade at critical moments. Even more you don’t want to experience a complete failure of the braking system due to overheating. How many times have you witnessed a truck descending a major down grade and the trailer brakes are smoking and then the drive wheel brakes start smoking and the truck isn’t slowing down. There are several things at play here. First a vehicle that may not be as well maintained as it should be. Secondly, the driver’s experience level might be called into question. Those long grades are common in the western part of the continent but let me assure you they aren’t all that rare in the east. Fancy Gap and Mont Eagle quickly come to mind. Throughout Pennsylvania there are many. Northern Ontario, particularly Highway 17 along the Lake Superior shore offer some genuine challenges. At this point the driver is faced with some critical decisions. On many of these high risk grades there is a “run-away” ramp, that will bring the truck to a grinding halt but it will tear the truck up a bit. These run-away truck ramps are so constructed the run-away vehicle sinks further and further into a sand and gravel mix and will stop without a doubt. These run-away ramps are not harmless to the vehicle whose driver has made the decision to use such an option. The theory is the truck will remain true and upright and just gradually come to a safe stop -- although the ride may be a little rough. The truth is the truck may veer wildly out of control, even upset. It’s not an option you want to use without good cause. The best option is during your daily vehicle inspection to take care of any brake issues apparent, and learn a good technique for descending a grade. During your daily inspection, ensure that all lubrication points are properly greased or oiled. When you’re connecting to a trailer, make sure the fifth wheel plate has sufficient lubrication to effect a smooth connection, especially in warm weather. Even run a greased finger across the rubber connectors on the glad hands as you connect them. It helps them from drying out when the temperatures go into the stratosphere. AND, most importantly, keep your tires properly inflated at 46

the recommended pressure to keep tires as cool as possible and maintaining proper adhesion to the road. Now, we come to the trailer with respect to keeping things cool and efficient. Other than reefers, there’s not a lot you can do, except that to do with brakes and tires. So make sure everything within your control is done to the best of your ability. When it comes to reefers, the same checks also need to be made as you would for the engine of the truck and the cooling system. Presumably, the reefer is maintained well by the company but it is the driver’s responsibility to get his freight delivered properly without damage, so it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure the reefer is going to do it’s job for the duration of the trip. Spot Truckload Freight For May Is Up 63% Year Over Year

S

pot truckload freight availability in May reached its highest point since September 2015, increasing 7.3 percent compared to April and 63 percent year over year, reported DAT Solutions, which operates the industry’s largest ondemand exchange for spot truckload freight. A steady increase in van and refrigerated (“reefer”) freight volume, combined with higher rates and load-to-truck ratios, are signs that “we are leaving the freight recession behind in the rearview mirror,” said Mark Montague, DAT industry pricing analyst.

Van and refrigerated freight activity led the way in May, with van volume gaining 16 percent compared to April and reefer freight volume up 19 percent. This indicates higher demand for 48

trucks to move dry goods and agricultural products before the start of the summer, Montague said. Flatbed activity slipped 2.4 percent month over month, in line with seasonal norms. Total freight volumes beat prior-year comparisons for the tenth consecutive month. Compared to May 2016, van load availability jumped 86 percent, reefers increased 87 percent, and flatbeds added 56 percent. Amid higher demand for truckload capacity, spot rates were higher for all three equipment types. Average spot van and refrigerated rates both increased in May, with the van rate gaining 2 cents to $1.69 per mile compared to April and 15 cents year over year. The reefer rate was $2.02 per mile, an 8-cent increase compared to April and up 13 cents compared to May 2016. The flatbed rate was $2.10 per mile, up 3 cents month over month and 8 cents year over year. Rates continued to rise for all three trailer types in the first week of June. Montague expects van and reefer pricing and volume to be elevated through the Fourth of July weekend, when freight activity typically begins to taper off. Reference rates are the averages, by equipment type, based on $33 billion of actual transactions between freight brokers and carriers, as recorded in DAT RateView. Reference rates per mile include fuel surcharges, but not accessorials or other fees. Beginning in January 2015, the DAT Freight Index was rebased so that 100 on the Index represents the average monthly volume in the year 2000. Additional trends and analysis are available at DAT Trendlines.

Después Del Accidente Ken Davey

E

A continuación, toma algunas fotos.
