NOVEC LINEWORKERS SWEEP CLIMBING SKILLS COMPETITION

AT GAFF-N-GO

Annual rodeo showcases the hard work electric workers put in every day

A sea of electric poles punctuated with a smattering of bucket trucks welcomed more than 200 competitors May 19-20 to a state fairground near Richmond, Virginia for the 19th annual Gaff-n-Go Lineworker Rodeo. Participants from seven states tested their climbing abilities, equipment repair skills, and rescue techniques.

Nineteen NOVEC lineworkers showcased their training and skills during timed competitions that demand strength, stamina, mental focus, and precision. Apprentice lineworkers competed as individuals; more experienced journeymen worked in threes, adding teamwork to the list of skills on display. All of the contests — from the “wire down” competition to the “hurt man rescue” are designed to emphasize safety and efficiency.

A trio of NOVEC apprentices swept the climbing skills contest. Jeremy Jenkins was the winner, Zachary Dayton took second and Johnny Lanzetta placed third.

It was spectator Caroline Boyd’s first Gaff-n-Go outing, but she was impressed by all the competitors, including her boyfriend, NOVEC journeyman Blake Sparling. “He’s a rock star,” she said.
