Liezl Martinez hurdles battle vs cancer Now, it can be told. Actress Leizel Martinez has hurdled her battle against cancer not only once but twice. In fact, she is now busy again in her work and show business. Not only that. Liezl, 46, is now a

picture of bliss and looks several years younger with her soft and supple skin, bouncy hair and bright eyes that glow every time she talks about how she’s enjoying life after cancer. Leizel and her successful bout with cancer was featured in publications, including Manila Standard Today. together with her doctor and this report is entirely based on that feature. Leizel, the only daughter of former actress Amalia Fuentes and matinee idol Romeo Vasquez whose real name is Anna-Lissa Sumilang before marrying actor-husband Albert Martinez, was first diagnosed of the big C in 2008 and underwent the excruciating chemotherapy thus losing weight and even her precious hair. Liezl first learned she had breast cancer following a breast exam ordered by Dr. Judy Fuentes, her obstetriciangynecologist at The Medical City (TMC). Liezl said she did not have any symptoms but since her doctor said women aged 40 and above should undergo breast exams yearly, she underwent the test. Subsequent tests revealed that Liezl had breast cancer and that it was already Stage 3, according to the Manila Standard Today report. She underwent

mastectomy and an intense chemotherapy regimen with her oncologist Dr. Alan Paul Olavere. After the chemo, she had 33 days of radiation therapy. “I lost my hair, my eyebrows, my lashes. I was not even pale, my skin was ashen in color,” recounted Liezl. She admitted she cried hard when she lost her hair. “When you think about it, you might say it’s just hair. But when you wake up in the morning, when you look at yourself in the mirror, you’ll see that you’re losing hair and that serves as a big reminder that you have cancer,” she said. She added: “It reminds you that you have cancer no matter how hard you’ve tried to carry on, or even if you have stuffed your bra to look as normal as possible.” According to Liezl, she was able to recover and regained her crowning glory after a couple of years of pain. In July 2011, she had cough that would not go away. She went to Dr. Liza Garcia, her pulmonologist at The Medical City, who ordered some tests which showed that she had fluids in her lungs, according to the report. When the fluids were drained from her lungs, the diagnosis confirmed that Liezl’s cancer recurred and had worsened as it metastasized to her left lung. Liezl said it was a dreadful setback. It was Stage 4. “I thought I was okay and then it happened. It was much more painful and harder to accept,” she confessed. What kept her going was the support of her husband and three kids, Alyanna, Alfonso and Alissa. Liezl recounted that for three years, she believed she was doing all the right things for her health. “I was drinking Guyabano juice every day. We bought

an alkaline machine for our water. I ate organic foods. Things like that and then it happened again,” she said. She recalled that through her step father, the late Joey Stevens, she learned about Dr. Samuel Bernal and stem cell therapy (also called stem cell treatment). “My step father visited me while I was hospitalized at TMC. He told me to just listen to what his friend, Dr. Samuel Bernal will say about stem cell,” she recalled. Dr. Bernal is one of the most respected figures in the fields of Medical Oncology and Regenerative Medicine. He is the Consultant and Adviser of the Institute of Personalized Molecular Medicine (IPMM) at The Medical City which opened in July 2012. IPMM is a specialized unit that offers a comprehensive range of clinical and laboratory services in molecular and cellular therapeutics, including molecular profiling and stem cell therapies for both Filipino and international patients. IPMM was established to expand The Medical City’s Regenerative Medicine program which started in 2004. According to Liezl, Dr. Bernal and oncologist Dr. Alan Paul Olavere discussed stem cell therapy with her and husband Albert. “At that time, it didn’t

sink in, probably because I was still groggy since I just came from the recovery room,” she recalled. She said Dr. Bernal recommended stem cell therapy and chemotherapy with molecular profiling for her. Liezl said her husband Albert decided for her to undergo stem cell therapy. The next day, Liezl was wheeled in to the Regenerative Medicine Department to undergo leukapheresis, a laboratory procedure where stem cells are removed from the peripheral blood stream and stored for future use. This was the initial stage for Liezl’s stem cell therapy. According to the newspaper report, Liezl had molecular profiling to identify genes and other biomarkers of disease to predict a patient’s response to treatments including drugs and other therapies. Dr. Bernal explained to Liezl that molecular profiling is based on the belief that since no two individuals are the same and no two cancers are alike, cancer treatment plans shouldn’t be either. Based on the information gathered from a patient’s tumor, doctors are able to identify the appropriate therapies that target the biomarkers within an individual patient’s cancer cells.

Judy Ann Santos ‘leaving’ ABS-CBN, Ogie leaves but Marian stays at GMA 7 After singer-comedian Ogie Alcasid, who will be the next celebrity to transfer network? Last week, after the lapse of his contract with GMA Network, Ogie signed up with TV5 to be its music head. His friend Michael V will reportedly follow Ogie. Michael V confirmed though that he will doing another comedy show on TV5 but he is not leaving GMA 7 entirely. “Ang dami ngang nagsasabi, ‘O, lilipat ka na rin sa TV5’ and I said no, hindi ako lilipat. I’ll be doing a show for TV5 just like Vic Sotto did, just like Joey De Leon did,” Michael V said. Television host Raymond Gutierrez earlier transferred to the Kapatid network. “New beginnings. Happy to announce that I’m officially a freelance artist & joining the team of the brand new TV5 starting this September. Looking forward to seeing you all again on weekends! #BackOnTv #primetime,” he said on Instagram and Twitter. Sultry actress Marian Rivera was rumored to be moving to ABS-CBN, but she instead renewed her contract with GMA Network, her home for many years. Then another speculation - Judy Ann Santos will

leave the Kapamilya network after her show “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” there ends. In his column on the tabloid AbanteTonite published last week, Alfie Lorenzo, Judy Ann’s manager, virtually admitted that the actress will do some work with the rival networks. This as Lorenzo wrote that he is studying the possibility for his ward doing projects with rival networks GMA 7 and TV5. Earlier, it was rumored that Judy Ann’s “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” show, her first television series in three years, will be cancelled within three weeks. “Eh blessing in disguise pa ang nangyayari ngayon dahil ‘pag natapos na ang Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala ay mawawala muna sa ABS-CBN si Juday,” Lorenzo wrote. “Dahil hindi siya nag-MMK eh sa Magpakailanman siya gagawa,” he added. MMK is ABS-CBN’s drama anthology program “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” while “Magpakailanman” is GMA 7’s weekly drama show. Lorenzo further wrote: “At wala rin lang movie ang Star Cinema para kay Juday kaya sa TV5 film outfit na Studio 5 gagawa ng movie si Juday!” Star Cinema is ABS-CBN’s film production arm.

Shaina Magdayao goes bolder in new movie with Piolo Pascual Comely singer, dancer and actress Shaina Magdayao is back in harness. And after hurdling some personal woes, she is back with vengeance - a bolder actress in a new movie which teams her up with matinee idol Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson. The movie is entitled “On The Job” and megged by director Erik Matti. Shainal plays the role of a wife of Piolo in the movie. “The project itself is very bold, it’s very daring, risky. Medyo iba talaga siya sa napapanood natin,” Shaina said in an interview on ABS-CBN top-rating show “The Buzz” hosted by Boy Abunda. Shaina said in the interview that she had no problem doing love scenes with Piolo, who is now being romantically linked to her. “Gumagawa naman tayo ng intimate scenes kapag kailangan sa telebisyon pero it’s the first time sa film na mature ‘yung role ko. This is very different,” she told “The Buzz.”. “Pero sabi ko naman siguro sa tagal ko dito sa in-

dustriya, as long as kailangan ng eksena, maipalabas ang gusto naming ipalabas at, most importantly, kung pinagkakatiwalaan ko ang leading man ko at direktor ay gagawin naman natin ‘yan,” she added. In the interview, Shaina thanked Piolo for giving her the chance to be part of the film. “Thank you sa good words at thank you at na-appreciate mo ako and ‘yung trabaho na nagawa natin. Siyempre it’s an honor na makatambal ang isa sa pinakamagagaling nating artista dito sa industriya,” she said. The beautiful actress, once linked to actor John Lloyd Cruz, was mum on reports of her alleged romantic relationship with Piolo. She, however, confirmed earlier that she and Piolo Pascual have been hanging out, but have since remained friends. She said of Piolo: “Isa po siyang mabuting kaibigan talaga.

ako and ngayon it’s a privilege to work with him.” The 24-year-old actress is also being linked to director and now Taguig City Congressman Lino Cayetano, brother of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. According to reports, the congressman has been constantly sending Shaina food when she was out shooting. He even sends sumptuous treats to Shaina’s Quezon City residence. “Oo, nagpapadala siya [pero] hindi lang naman sa akin,” Shaina admitted. The actress however, chooses to keep mum on whether or not the food spree means more than just generosity on Lino’s part. “Siya na lang tanungin niyo. Nakakahiya naman na sa akin manggaling,” Shaina told members of the media during the 15th anniversary celebration of her family’s business, Ystilo Salon. Congressman Cayetano directed Shaina’s TV series “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo” from April to November 2012. “Pero ‘yun lang I don’t know him much yet. Nakatrabaho ko siya, yes. But in a different way, hindi ko pa siya nakakasama,” Shaina said.

My Husband’s Lover continues to break records GMA Network’s series “My Husband’s Lover” has dominated television’s primetime slot with recordbreaking viewership. The stars of the series, meanwhile, are attracting big crowds during tours

in various areas, the latest being in Davao City for its annual Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. Dennis Trillo and Tom Rodriguez, who played as gay lovers in the series and Carla Abellana, who played as wife of a gay husband, together with Bettina Carlos, bannered the Kapuso Barangayan in Barangay Rafael Cas-

tillo Covered Court in Agdao, Davao City and the Kapuso Mall Show at the Kadayawan Hall of NCCC Mall of Davao. GMA’s most provocative primetime drama series also reached record-breaking audience results during the show’s first-ever promo tour in the Visayas, featuring the shows lead stars Dennis, Tom and Carla Abellana, together with Kuh Ledesma, Kevin Santos, Victor Basa, and Bettina. The cast managed to attract throngs of supporters at the Gaisano Grand Mall Mactan and SM City Cebu even on a weekday afternoon. Carla, who plays the role of a martyr wife named Lally in the series, was deeply overwhelmed with joy upon knowing that majority of the crowd

sympathizes with her character. “In fairness, love ko ang Cebu. Buti na lang team Lally sila at ang dami talagang posters and signages. Nakakatuwa kasi I know, not only are they my fans pero siguro marami sa kanila ang nakaka-relate kay Lally,” she said. When asked what quality of Lally she admires the most, Carla shared, “Her unbelievable amount of strength. Hindi mo kasi alam kung saan nanggagaling eh. Although she grew up na maraming pinagdaanang obstacles, lumaki na single parent ‘yung mom at may mga financial difficulties, it is still a question for me, where does she get the enough motivation. Well, I guess from her children.” As for Tom, a proud Waray who fluently speaks the Philippine native Visayan dialect couldn’t thank God enough for the countless blessings he’s been constantly receiving. “I don’t know and I don’t even wanna question. I thank God for all the blessings he has given me. This year has been non-stop in my professional and personal life. I am just so thankful,” he said. He said he is lucky to be a part of a series that is able to open intelligent discussions about life. “It’s just really nice that the show opens a lot of talks which has been rare

for the past few years in television,” he said. “That’s why I’m really happy and blessed to become a part of one that is doing just that,” he said in a Sun Star report. Dennis who portrays the role of Tom’s gay lover in the series shared how dedicated their team is to make every episode of the show more interesting. “Seryoso kaming lahat sa trabaho namin. Kaya siguro ganito na lang din ‘yung reward na natatanggap namin. Maaga pa lang naramdaman na namin na tatangkilikin ‘yung show at everyday nadadagdagan ‘yung pagkabilib rin namin sa nagagawa ng pagtatrabaho na binibigay mo ‘yung best mo talaga,” he said. Unlike the others who auditioned, Dennis was given the chance to choose between Eric and Vincent and he chose to play the role of Eric because, “Nagsawa na rin siguro ako sa mga roles na pinortray ko na madalas ako ‘yung asawa so minabuti kong piliin ‘yung bading para may bago naman akong ginagawa. Pinaghandaan ko ito by observing ‘yung mga taong nakakasalamuha ko araw-araw. From there, nakakakuha ako ng mga iba’t ibang characters which I am able to apply sa role ko as Eric,” he said.

Ryan Agoncillo mulls transfer from TV5 to GMA By Edwin P. Sallan, InterAksyon.com ·It sucks!” Is actor and television host Ryan Agoncillo transferring from TV5 to GMA? From the looks of it, there is indication that the husband of Judy Ann Santos may yet indeed move to the network where his wife is also being rumored to be transferring. Ryan made the hint as TV5 decided to end its top-rated talent search, “Talentadong Pinoy,” which the actor hosts. Ryan controlled his emotion when asked how he feels about the end of his five-year-old show in which TV5 also made a mark. Ironically, TV5’s InterAksyon, through Edwin P. Sallan, reported on the possible departure of its talent on its website. Ryan made the statement during a press conference that introduced the show’s seven Hall of Famers who will compete for the title of Ultimate Talentado on August 18, at the Cuneta Astrodome. In a rare display of emotion that saw him momentarily pause while trying to fight off tears, the usually cheerful and mildmannered Ryan could no longer hide his disappointment over the Kapatid network’s decision to cancel the show that has lorded over its weekend primetime slots, reported Wedwin Sallan. Ryan recalled the beginnings of “Talentadong Pinoy” when it struggled in the ratings in its first eight months before finally gaining momentum with audiences. He described the show’s finale dubbed as “Talentadong Pinoy Worldwide Battle Royale” as “the end of an era” and a “bittersweet moment” for him and the show’s staff. “My contract with TV5 actually expired this January, but I decided to stay on as a freelancer because I loved the show and me and the staff want to do the best shows we can every week,” the multi-awarded TV host and part-time actor revealed. Ryan has been rumored to be transferring to GMA Network where he is already part of its long-running noontime show, “Eat Bulaga” since 2009. But Ryan made it clear that he has nott decided on his future and has not met anyone regarding what he intends to do next adding that he was leaving such matters to his manager, Noel Ferrer. “By Monday the day after our finale, I might be in a better position to answer your questions about my future. But for now, my concern as a professional is to make sure our team presents a very good show this coming Sunday,” he assured in the press conference. TV5 head of creative and entertainment production Perci Intalan, who was also in the press conference, told reporters that while “Talentadong Pinoy” is “bowing out for now”, there is always a

chance for TV5 to bring the show back. Perci also announced that shows like “Wow Mali!” and “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” will return on the air soon. Ryan, however, was non-commital when asked if he will also return as host of the show should TV5 decide to bring it back in the future, insisting that he will only start thinking of his future after the show’s finale. Focusing on his show’s finale Battle Royale, Ryan promised to end the five-year run of “Talentadong Pinoy” with a big bang as it features seven talented Hall of Famers starting with magician slash illusionist Laserman from Malabon, Chinese yo-yo master Spyro Marco from Nueva Ecija, the hip-hop dance squad Nocturnal Dance Company from Quezon City and the contortionist group, Larvae from Davao. Rounding up the Hall of Famers are talented singers Sor Apao from Iligan City, Rina Forbes from Makati and Haina from as far back as Qatar in the Middle East. Aside from these amazing talented acts, the Battle Royale Finale will also be graced by celebrity Talent Scouts Judy Ann Santos, John Lapus, Direk Joey Reyes, Joey de Leon and Kapatid stars Edu Manzano, Aga Muhlach, Derek Ramsay, and the one and only Megastar Ms. Sharon Cuneta. Edwin Sallan also reported that Ryan is saving his best for last as he intends to keep the promise he made during his surprise birthday celebration on the show last April. Yes, he will perform a very special number with the Manoeuveres, the top-notch all male dance group of which he was once a member.

Almost a year after their first baby, Katrence was born, Kris Lawrence’s love for Katrina Halili is stronger than ever. “Mas in love ako, now na may baby na kami,” says Kris, who can’t wait to rush home to bond with his 11-month old daughter. Surprisingly, they are not living under one roof – yet. Katrina’s place, says Kris, is a mere jogging distance away from his home. But the set-up works. “We seldom fight,” reveals Kris. “Kapag may tampo, aalis ako ng 10 minutes at magpapalamig. Then I’ll do something stupid and make her laugh. I’m the first to make amends kahit mali ako.” ‘Yes, dear’ Kris has buried his ego deep, deep down where he can’t unearth it. The reason is simple: he wants to be happy. “One thing that sticks to my head is what someone told me – the secret to a happy life is a happy wife. The magic words are ‘Yes, dear.’ Feel ko happy naman si Katrina.” So what’s keeping him from popping the question? Turns out Kris is waiting for a few things. One is divine guidance on the proper timing for the proposal. Another is for Katrence – or Katy – as he and Katrina call her – to be able to walk straight so she can be the flower girl in their wedding. “Dapat makapag-concentrate siya sa paghagis ng flowers.” Kris wants Zoren Legaspi – who surprised wife Carmina Villarroel – when he married her, to be his mentor in this department. “Marriage will come soon. And it will be a surprise (for Katrina). I have to talk to Zoren,” Kris smiles. Happy man The happy guy feels blessed to have a supportive partner who trusts him enough to give him space. “Kat is not the type na sobrang higpit. We still have our separate lives. Kapag gusto kong lumabas okay lang.” She is the wind beneath his wings. Kris relates how Katrina watches his GMA show “Sunday All Stars” and sends him feedback about his number through SMS. Her comments, Kris relates, are balanced. One time, she’d praise him. At another time, Katrina goes, “Bakit ganon?” Kris appreciates how she takes the time to listen to his song, even if she’s in the middle of a conversation with a friend. “Pag may kausap siya, she’ll ask the person to wait and she’ll listen to my song.” ‘Spread the Love’ His newest album, “Spread the Love” (GMA Records) has Katrina’s influence all over it. He wrote four of the 12 songs – “Sabihin Mo Naman,” “Di Na Matatanggap,” “Addict” and “Try Again” for her. The mid-tempo single “Sabihin Mo Naman” is a plea for love. The sad lyrics of “Di na Matatanggap” show Kris’ feelings after Katrina broke up with him in 2010. “She asked for space,” Kris recalled. Thankfully, Katrina changed her mind after some five months. The doting dad dedicates “Make Me Whole” for Katrence, whose first smile during the first week of her life sent her parents to seventh heaven. Kris’ favorite though, is “Try Again.” “I was super inspired I wrote it in 20 minutes. My pen wouldn’t stop! I went to the piano and started playing. I was crying while I was writing cause feel na feel ko yon habang nagsusulat. A lot of things came to mind, especially when I was younger.”

My recent visit to ANCOP Villages By Anita Aytona Hello friends, I would like to share with you photos of my recent trip to 2 ANCOP villages in the Philippines last July. My visit is to see where the Holy Cross Mission Team will build in March 2014. Pls forward this email to all your friends so that our work for the poor will benefit more people.

This village is in Visayas avenue. A big fire almost wiped out the homes 3 years ago and now, thanks to company sponsors like AJ Insurance, new homes are being built by ANCOP. This is the urban site where Holy Cross High School will build. The second build site is in a rural area as shown photo in left.

This is Our Lady of Banneux village in San Mateo. OLB is called the Virgin of the Poor after Mother Mary appeared to a girl in 1933 in Belgium. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_ Banneux

What a big statute of our Mother Mary! She is keeping watch over the ANCOP village in San Mateo. They will build a chapel too. See the huge mango trees? What a delight to be surrounded by them! This is the inside of a model unit in San Mateo. The house has 2 floors. I was impressed by the use of solar panels to save on electric power. Sunshine Cruz files criminal charges against hubby Cesar Montano The relationship of actor Cesar Montano and actress Sunshine Cruz has worsened with the actress filing criminal complaint against her erstwhile husband before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court. In her complaint-affidavit filed before the court on Tuesday, Sunshine accused her husband of violation of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Law for maltreating and hurting her, among others. Cesar was not immediately available to comment on the charges filed against him. The comely actress claimed in her affidavit that Cesar had hurt her and complained hat he was a womanizer. Sunshine also claimed that her husband allegedly raped her on May 12, which was Mother’s Day. She claimed that on that day, Cesar allegedly “barged” into her residence, “where she was alone, and then violently attacked her, employed physical violence and raped” her. The pretty actress was accompanied in court by her legal counsel, lawyer Bonifacio Alentajan, in the filing of the case against her husband. In her affidavit, the actress also claimed that Cesar has committed -and still continues to commit -- acts of violence and verbal abuse against her and her three daughters. Sunshine described her husband as “a very domineering, philandering husband that demanded full submission and obedience” from her. The comely actress detailed in her affidavit-complaint a recent affair between her husband and starlet Krista Miller which, she said, had adverse effects on her daughters, who had read the text messages exchanged between Cesar and Krista. Sunshine said her daughter also witnessed her father receive a text photo of the starlet in a bikini.

Sunshine also complaned that she had been denied access to her children since July 29, despite her efforts for them to be brought home. “Bilang tatay siya ng mga anak ko, as much as possible, we want to protect the person. But since the 29th, hindi ko na rin nakita ang mga anak ko. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ganun kaya I decided to do this already,” she said in an ABS-CBN report. The actress said her failure to see her children prompted her to file charges against her husband. “Kasi kapag nasa work naman ako, hinahayaan kong kunin niya ang mga bata. Pero hindi na niya sinauli, puro tomorrow, tomorrow. ‘Yung tomorrow na ‘yun tumagal na nang tumagal hanggang sa I realized na he’s not going to give back my kids,” she said. Sunshine told ABS-CBN she is willing to lose everything except her kids. “Napakahirap sa akin kasi I’ve been a devoted wife and a mom to my children. Sinakripisyo ko nga lahat para sa mga anak ko tapos parang pusa ka na lang na tinanggalan ng mga kuting. Masakit sa akin ang mga nangyayari,” she said. The network reported that Sunshine has been granted a temporary protection order by the Quezon City Court, prohibiting him to come within 300 meters of her. A petition for a permanent protection order (PPO) is currently being heard at the QC Regional Trial Court. A second hearing is scheduled on August 15. Last January, the actress announced that she has decided to live apart from Cesar, her husband of 13 years, for good. The singer-actress stressed that she gave the marriage her all. “For now, I just have to move on and be happy,” she added.

Bong Revilla, Lani Mercado to lead stars in centennial movie of Iglesia ni Cristo By JO ERLINDA G. NEBRES Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and wife Rep. Lani MercadoRevilla will star in a documentary on the beginnings and eventual success of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) to highlight the church’s centennial celebration in 2014. Other big stars in the movie entitled “Sugo” will be Richard Gomez and Albert Martinez. The senator himself disclosed he will play Eduardo Villanueva Manalo, the current executive minister of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), in the film. Gomez, who is married to Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez of Ormoc City and Leyte, will play the role of Ka Felix Manalo, the founder of INC, while Martinez will play the role of Ka Erdy Manalo, father of Ka Eduardo.

The home-grown church which now has churches all over the world, including the United States, is in feverish preparations to celebrate the church’s 100th year and the filming of the movie is just one part of the big world-wide celebration. The church is currently rushing the construction of the world’s biggest arena along the North Luzon Expressway in Bocaue, Bulacan estimated to cost $212 million or a whooping P9 billion. Designed by a global architectural firm, the dome coliseum, to be called Philippine Arena and will have a sitting capacity of 50,000 to 55,000, will be dotted by smaller coliseums, modern hospital, a convention center, a university, and village complex called Ciudad de Victoria for the Iglesia leaders and followers. “The Ciudad de Victoria where Philippine Arena is being constructed will also be the home to EGM Memorial Medical Center, New Era University Bulacan Campus, New Era University Sports Stadium Complex and EVM Convention Center, capable of holding wide range of events,” said INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo. When completed, the Philippine Arena will be twice as big as the two biggest indoor coliseums in the United States, namely, the Staples Center in Los Angeles which has a sitting capacity of 21,000 and the Madison Square Garden in New York with a sitting capacity of 20,000. The Philippine Arena, which is being built by a consortium from the United States, Australia, China, South Korea and the Philippines, also beats the O2 Arena in London which has 30,000 seats and is three times bigger than the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, Korea’s largest indoor arena. As part of the preparation of celebration, Iglesia ni Cristo also bought a town in the United States where it hopes to building another church complex. Senator Revilla, interviewed by Ernie Reyes of TV5 and Interaksyon, said his wife will play Ka Eduardo’s wife Lynn Ventura in the film. “Handog ito para sa ika-100 taong anibersaryo o centennial cel-

ebration ng pagkakatatag ng Iglesia ni Cristo sa Pilipinas (This is the offering for the 100th anniversary or the centennial celebration of the foundation of the Iglesia ni Cristo in the Philippines),” said the senatoractor. Revilla said he has offered his services for free. “Kaibigan natin ang Iglesia ni Cristo. Hindi na kailangan pang maningil (Iglesia ni Cristo is a friend. We don’t need to charge them a professional fee),” he said. “Isang malaking karangalan para sa akin upang mapili mismo ni Ka Eduardo na gumanap bilang siya sa pelikulang ito (It is such a big

honor for me to be personally chosen by Ka Eduardo to play him in this film),” he said. Revilla said that “Sugo” will narrate how Ka Felix started the Iglesia Ni Cristo from a small church in Sta. Ana, Manila on July 27, 1914 with his wife Pura after he became dissatisfied with Roman Catholic Church. “Matutunghayan sa pelikula kung paano sinimulan ni Ka Felix Manalo ng Iglesia Ni Cristo na ipinagpatuloy ni Ka Erdy Manalo, at ngayon ni Ka Eduardo Manalo(The film will tell the story of how Ka Felix Manalo started INC which Ka Erdy Manalo and now Ka Eduardo Manalo continued to oversee),” he said.

Kim Chiu denies ‘snubbing’ a child fan Actress Kim Chiu has reportedly snubbed a young fan who wanted a photo with her. Kim, however, immediately denied the allegation, saying she felt sad about the negative report. The Kapamilya actress allegedly snubbed a fan, who requested for her photo to be taken with Kim, at the S&R Membership Shopping in Taguig City. One of Kim’s Twitter followers urged the actress to break her silence and defend her name on this matter. “I felt bad coz even how good you are, they keep on saying things about you. I want you to defend on this nakakainis na sila,” the follower tweeted. Kim later explained, through her Twitter account, what really happened during her short encounter with the said fan. According to her, one parent was forcing her kid to have her photo taken with her. When she noticed the kid’s displeasure, she

decided to just ignore the mother of the child. “Thanks for the info. I don’t like kasi yung feeling na pinipilit nila yung bata na magpapicture sa akin even if the kid doesn’t really want. Tinulak tulak nya na yung bata palapit sakin, yung bata naman AYAW,” she tweeted as reported by Glaiza Jarloc of Sunstar. Kim added, “So, sana si mommy na lang nagpapic sa akin at least yun ok pa di na nahirapan yung bata. Di nya tinulak tulak so what I did, di ko na pinansin si mommy kawawa yung bata e.” “So sad,” Kim said of the incident. “Life... hahanap at hahanapan ng butas. God bless you all especially sa taong yun. Sana masaya na po kayo ma’am.” Kim Chiu is one of the lead actors in the current Star Cinema flick “Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo” based on a book written by Ramon Bautista.

Andi Eigenmann, Jake Ejercito are ‘ON’ again Yes, they are back in each other’s arms after months apart. In fact, a beaming Andi Eigenmann admitted her relationship with Jake Ejercito, son of former President now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, is now “better than ever.” Months ago, Andi and Jake were so sweet with each other until her mother, the awardwinning actress Jaclyn Jose, put their relationship to the open as she appealed to the former President and actress Laarni Enriquez to give their children the chance to be together and love one another. Apparently, the exposure irritated the former President and Enriquez who were surprised with Jaclyn’s statements. While Jake was not chastised in public by his parents for his romance with Andi, he left in a huff for London. The former President said then that he does not meddle in his children’s affairs, adding that Jake was educated and intillegent enough to know what is best for him at present and in the future. Andi’s statement of a better relationship with Jake came after she expressed apprehension that their ties might be affected after she was dragged into the breakup of singer Billy Crawford and actress Nikki Gil. “We’ve been better than ever,” Andi told Boy Abunda’s “The Buzz” on ABS-CBN. Her statements were posted by the network on its website. The comely actress added: “Hindi ko masasabi [na we are back] kasi ever since the beginning naman, hindi ko talaga alam kung ano dapat ang sabihin. Never naman ako nag-hesitate na sabihin sa mga tao na I really care about this person and that this person is special to me.” The actress said she and Ejercito are just happy with what they have at the moment.

“Ang pinag-usapan lang po namin is that when we are ready, kapag tamang oras na, saka magkakaroon siguro ng label. Pero at this moment, sa tingin ko mga bata pa kami and may sarili pa kaming mga bagay na gusto namin mag-focus on,” she said. Ejercito is currently finishing his studies in London and came home to help his father campaign for mayor of Manila. Andi, who is busy taping her upcoming series “Galema,” admitted that she got jealous when Jake was linked to “It’s Showtime” host Coleen Garcia, ABS-CBN reported.. The network reported that Andi was asked if she confronted Jake about Garcia and the actress , the “Galema” star said: “Nung time kasi na narinig ko about it, hindi niya ako kinakausap so hindi ko alam kung ano talaga ang totoo. And ang dami kong naririnig. Initially, maniniwala ka or magkakaroon ka ng doubt. Pero at the same time, I still trust Jake so whatever he tells me, whatever he says, I believe him.” At the same time, Eigenmann assured Ejercito that he has nothing to be jealous of Matteo Guidicelli, who is her leading man in her upcoming soap. “Nakilala na niya si Matteo even during ‘Agua Bendita’ because Jake and I have been friends since forever. For some reason, kahit pareho pa kaming single ni Matteo, hindi niya daw ako type, hindi ko din siya type so sige na nga,” she said. Eigenmann said Guidicelli is really her good friend and they will remain just that. “Matteo and I are awesome. We’ve been friends even before ‘Agua Bendita.’ In this industry, si Matteo ang isa sa mga tao na kahit anong mangyari, kahit hindi kami magkatrabaho ulit, alam ko na kaibigan ko pa rin siya,” she said.

Herbert Bautista now a movie producer, stars in comeback comedy film ‘Raketeros’ This is no laughing matter. Yes, comedian Herbert Bautista, now on his second term as mayor of Quezon City, the wealthiest local government unit in the Philippines with P13 billion revenues this year, has made a comeback as an actor and comedian. Bistek, as the mayor is popularly known, stars in a movie with fellow comedians called “Raketeros” which just opened in theaters nationwide. No less than top officials ng Quezon City, headed by House of Representatives Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr., graced the premiere night of the Raketeros at the Trinoma cinema. The movie is produced by Heaven’s Best, an entertainment company owned by Mayor Bautista and siblings Hero and Harlene, now Mrs. Romnick Sarmenta. Top comedians Ogie Alcasid, Dennis Padilla, Long Mejia and Andrew E also star in the movie. In special roles, aside from Joey Marquez, are Mark Gil, Sam Pinto, Ryan Bang, Wendy Valdez, RR Enriquez, Regine Angeles, Rodjun Cruz, Eula Caballero, Karen Reyes, Markki Stroem, Ryan Boyce, Ya Chang, IC Mendoza, Ahwell Paz, Patricia Ismael and Lassy. Other guest stars in the movie are Janice de Belen, Cherry Pie Picache, Dimples Romana, Lou Veloso and Regine Velasquez. Distributed by Star Cinema, Raketeros, is the first movie directorial job of Randy Santiago. Prior to directing a movie, Randy has directed comedy shows, such as Aalug-Alog, produced by ABS-CBN.

Several celebrities who were at the Cinema 7 of Trinoma for the premier showing of Raketeros included Phillip Salvador, Marco Gumabao, Carla Estrada (a personal friend of Tates Gana, first lady of Quezon City) and Roderick Paulate, now a secondterm councilor ng Quezon City. Butch Bautista, former actor and father of Mayor

Bautista, was also present to celebrate his children’s first movie production. Those who saw the movie said they enjoyed it. As promised by its stars and director, the film spells laughter from beginning to end, according to a People’s Journal columnist. “Napaka-simple ng istorya ng Raketeros. It’s

about a dad (played by Joey Marquez in a special role), who wants to give the best for his daughter (Tippi de Santos) for her 18th birthday,” the columnist reported. For years, Herbert was well-known in comedy flicks and became more famous when he portrayed in the movie the komiks superhero, Captain Barbell in 1986. Prior to this, Herbert or Bistek had been so busy doing films and TV projects. He hibernated in the movies when he entered politics in Quezon City first as councilor, then as vice mayor. Herbert said he plans to do at least two movies a year. In fact, months before the production of Raketeros, he and Aga Muhlach had agreed to co-produce a movie. However, Aga’s political ambition stalled their project. He said that after the showing of Raketeros which will be out in theaters, the mayor promised to pursue with the Herbert Bautista-Aga Muhlach tandem. “This time, okey na si Aga. Nagpapapayat nga siya para sa pelikulang gagawin namin. Tapos na rin yung storyline at si Randy Santiago rin ang director namin,” he said. Bistek added: “By the way, I want to commend my co-actors in Raketeros … Ogie Alcasid, Dennis Padilla, Andrew E and Long Mejia for the job well-done. Hindi sila nagpapatawa sa Raketeros pero, sobrang nakakatawa ang kanilang… este ang amin palang mga eksena. I also salute our director Randy Santiago dahil talaga namang hinayaan n’ya kaming magwala sa aming mga eksena.”

Neri Naig: I’m not yet ok, but I’m getting there After weeks of keeping the public guessing on what her feelings are, Chito Miranda’s girlfriend Neri Naig finally broke her silence over the video scandal involving her and the Parokya ni Edgar vocalist. In her official statement, coursed through her management company DMV Entertainment on Sunday, August 18, Neri admitted that “I am not yet ok, but I am getting there.” She added that her first reaction after finding out that the video went viral was to send a message to her family at once. “For two weeks, nagkulong lang ako sa room ko and just wanted to disappear. I didn’t want to see or talk or hear from anyone.” Neri revealed that she finally decided to start reading messages from family, friends, acquaintances and even random people she does not know, only a few days ago. And that’s when she felt how much she is loved. “Grabeng pagmamahal yung pinaramdam nila sa akin.” Thank yous

Neri relates that Chito asked her to watch footage from TV shows online. “The first one he showed me was from The Buzz, and Tito Boy’s (Abunda) comment made me want to hug him agad. What he did and said about us, helped me a lot. Then I saw what Showbiz Inside Report did. Pinakita nila kami bilang isang normal na couple na nagmamahalan. I also saw what they showed on Star Talk, and read an article from GMA 7, and what they said was fair and unbiased at naging malaking tulong para makawala ng pain kahit paano. Maraming salamat po.”

Neri also expressed appreciation about how media handled Chito’s decision to approach the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) to seek help in tracking down the video uploader. “Nung naabutan ng TV5, GMA, at ABS CBN si Chito sa pangalawang araw niya sa NBI, nirespeto nila yung paki-usap ni Chito na wag gawing big deal yung pagpunta nya doon and they responsibly reported everything as it is. Gusto ko din magpasalamat kay Mr. John Consulta sa concern na pinakita nya. Neri also thanked Universal Records executive Kathleen Dy. “Napakalaki po ng tulong nyo po sa amin ni Chito.” Also on her thank you list are DMV Management (“Salamat po sa pag-

unawa at pag-alalay sa akin”) and the NBI (“Kahit di pa man kami lumalapit sa inyo, inaaksyunan nyo na po agad ang kaso”). Positive note She ended her statement on a positive note. “Kung pwede lang po talagang yakapin lahat ng tao na umalalay, nagpakita ng pagmamahal at support sa amin ni Chito...Maraming maraming salamat po. I am not yet ok, but I am getting there.” Chito has already apologized for the leaked private video, which showed him and Neri in their most intimate moments. He also claimed that someone stole the hard drive from his and Neri’s room.

Brazilian Daiana Menezes gets naked for a magazine Controversial Brazilian model and actress Daiana Menezes is bound to turn a lot of heads with her latest magazine pictorial. This as she appeared naked on the September 2013 cover of UNO Magazine. Menezes wears nothing but a black necktie to cover her left breast in the cover image shot by fashion photographer Xander Angeles. The cover line reads: “Brazilipina Bares Her Soul. Daiana Menezes in her sexiest pictorial ever!” A resident of the Philippines for almost seven years, Menezes had appeared on the covers of Maxim and FHM Philippines before, but this marks the first time she went totally nude for a men’s magazine.. The Brazilian made headlines in early June when she complained in her social media accounts that she was suffering from “physical, sexual and emotional pain”due to abuse committed by the man she had identified as her husband, then Cagayan de Oro congressman Benjo Benaldo. The controversy led to the alleged suicide attempt by the former congressman at his office at the House of Representatives. Benaldo was rushed to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City where he eventually recovered. Benaldo, however, said the shooting of himself was only an accident. Menezes latter issued a public apology and claimed she had “forgiven me because “she truly loves me”. In the process, he also revealed that they had already gotten married in civil rites in Las Vegas last December. In late June, Benaldo shot himself in the chest in an apparent suicide as he was clearing his office at the House of Representatives after losing his congressional post in the midterm elections last May. He survived and claimed what had happened was an accident when he was discharged from hospital two weeks later. Menezes has been mum on the incident since.

Michael V recovers from dengue fever Comedian-singer Michael V is now out of danger after suffering from dengue fever. In fact, he was scheduled to be discharged from St. Lukes’ Hospital and Medical Center in Quezon City. The actor, whose real name is Beethoven del Valle Bunagan, was confined for a week at the hospital for what he thought first as bad flu. Later, it was discovered that he was suffering from dengue fever and had to be confined in the hospital. While at the hospital, he posted on Twitter an appeal for prayer and donation of blood for his blood transfusion. Another Twitter message later stated that his condition has become critical as he has not improved. In those critical moments, the actor’s platelets continued to decline even as his close friends and fans made their prayer and gave blood for his transfusion. Among those who responded were his close friend Ogie Alcasid and wife Regine Velasquez, co-star Ronnie Henares and many others. To the surprise of many, the comedian posted a good news on his Instagram account with a photo of his V-sign. In his message, the 43-year-old actor from Irosin, Sorsogon, stated that he has recovered and well on the way to being discharged from the hospital. Michael V, a graduate of the Pamantasan ng Lung-

sod ng Maynila and the Manila Science High School, stated his Instagram message accompanying his V-sign photo: “Today we win one battle through the power of prayer and science. I thank all who fought beside me and hope to win more.” He wrote “God is good” as caption of the V-sign photo. In an earlier post, he said he was slowly recovering from dengue. “We’re slowly but steadily seeing progress in my condition. I DO NOT require transfusion anymore at this point so I’d like to thank all those who helped out. If all goes well, I may be able to go home tomorrow and continue bed rest for a week,” he stated. “ I thank the good Lord for listening to our prayers,” he also said in a post on Sunday. Last week, Michael V asked his fans to pray for him after his platelets declined. “Much as I’d want to, I don’t think I can accom-

Zia on being compared to Zsa Zsa & Karylle Zia Quizon denies varying her musical style just to avoid comparisons with mom Zsa Zsa Padilla and sister Karylle. “I think talagang iyon lang ang lumalabas kapag nagsusulat ako or kapag nag-iisip kami ng concept. I think sa OPM, mas naappreciate na ng mga tao na yung true personality shines through your music, being your own personality,” Zia said at the press launch of her new album “A Little Bit of Lovin’” at Sequioa Hotel, Quezon City on Tuesday, August 13. Although Zia’s jazz, soul and pop sound is distinct from her mom’s signature ballads and Karylle’s pop songs, Zsa Zsa’s youngest daughter knows people will

always compare them. The best version “We’re just starting to shape the idea na it’s not about better, or worse or best. Everyone should be the best version of themselves. And I think my sister is the best version of herself, di ba? I can only aspire to be like that personally.” Zia admires the way Karylle is handling her career. Aside from singing, Karylle hosts and acts in musical plays. “I don’t feel that I’m there yet, so I would think that she’s the better singer. Kasi she knows where she’s going talaga in life and her ideals in life come

modate visitors at the moment but your payers are very welcome. In God’s grace, I’ll let you know as soon as my condition gets better,” he said. through. She’s also writing din now. I think it’s kanyakanya na din,” Zia says. She might venture into acting “eventually.” “I’m a very open, kind of go-with-the-flow. Pero sa totoo lang, mas behind the scenes ako interesado. Nagsusulat, directing, maybe producing and getting to shape the industry itself, not just being a part of it.” Zia reveals that she has acting and hosting offers. But for now, she is more focused on music. That’s because she wants to be totally ready if she tries something new. “I don’t want din kasi to start hosting na parang okay lang ako as a host. I really want to start din magaling na ako, just so I don’t waste anybody’s time din.” Now that her new album is out, does she feel more pressured because her first CD was a success? Or is it because she comes from a family of singers (her dad, Dolphy, is also known for his singing talent)? Sources of pressure “I think both. And we want to use that pressure din to push forward and make something na we’re proud of. Hopefully, people will appreciate the meaning of the music na they can change life din and music to affect a person’s life.” A year after her dad passed away, Zia said the family is doing well. “It’s kind of baby steps kind of a process din, but you know, we’re learning. We’re growing every day. I’m just glad din kasi I get to focus a little bit more on who we are as people kaya medyo existentialist thoughts between daughter and mom. So, it’s a nice experience din kasi we get to discover ourselves.” The new album includes her songs “Kung Ayaw Mo Sa ‘Kin,” “Bakit Di Ka Crush ng Crush Mo” and “Katulad Ng Iba,” Zia’s collaboration with rapper Gloc-9. “I think it’s nice lang din kasi I got to dedicate it to my dad and my mom, too. I wouldn’t be anywhere without them so it was a nice opportunity to dedicate the whole album to them.”

Binibining Pilipinas-Supranational Johanna Datul and her ‘salagubang walk’ Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup had the tsunami walk. Janine Tugonon, 2012 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe had the cobra walk. Ariella Arida Bb. Pilipinas 2013 promised to showcase the ariba walk. Now, Bb. Pilipinas Miss Supranational Mutya Johanna Datul has come up with her very own “salagubang walk.” You read it right. This 21-year-old beauty from Isabela, who prides herself in being a true-blue Ibanag, created a walk that would set her apart from the 93 beauties she is competing with all over the world in the Miss Supranational pageant in Minsk, Belarus (a country in Eastern Europe) on September 6. She explains that her signature walk is inspired by her native salagubang back in the province. Unleashing her ‘exotic’ side “Exotic ang salugubang, parang ako,” she explains. “Parang nakakatakot, pero kapag

nahuli mo, sobrang enjoy.” She proceeded to show her salagubang walk on stage, a walk that requires one to move na “parang may pakpak.” The charming beauty has gone through communication, personality development, projection and language training in preparation for the international pageant. She also attended hair and make-up sessions care of Bb. Pilipinas. “Overwhelmed ako sa suporta na nagpapatatag sa akin,” she told her audience, composed of Bb. Pilipinas Charities chair Stella Araneta, reigning and past beauty queens who gave her words of encouragement during her send-off at the Gateway Mall in Cubao. The pageant, Mutya adds, is the fulfillment of a dream, and she promised not to let her countrymen down. She even learned a few Russian words to connect

with her audience in Belarus (the country is near Russia). Winning combination “I will bring with me three essentials,” she promised. “These are my strong faith in God and my supporters, prayers and sincerity.” Her parents’ advice – to use her God-given talents to reach her dreams – will always stay at the back of her mind. Mutya’s sights are not just focused on winning the international pageant. She also wants to join other beauty queens who have tried showbiz. “I love watching actors and actress since I was seven. Sila ang nagbibigay saya sa maraming tao, especially ang mga komedyante. Inspirasyon ko sila.” Then, she flashes a winning smile that says, “Don’t worry, I can do it!”

Carla Dunareanu still friends with Christian Bautista even after breakup Carla Dunareanu feels at home in the Philippines. More than a year since she arrived in Manila with her then boyfriend Christian Bautista, she had managed to learn some Filipino words, like, “Bilis,” “Takbo na rito,” and “Huwag na mahiya.” We have the chance to interview Carla after her hosting stint at the World of Toyota motor show last August 16. “I love the Philippines!” she began. Smiling, the Romanian-Chinese DJ/host resumed, “I’d love to stay here as long as I can. The people are amazing. “I love working, you know. I love my family at Magic 89.9.” At present, she is part of the On Demand radio show. Didn’t she have a hard time adapting to Pinoy cul-

ture? Before coming here, Carla was based in Singapore, where she actually met Christian through The Kitchen Musical. “It has not really been a hard adjustment to move from Singapore to the Philippines, especially that people here are very friendly.” And she’s one of those celebrities now who’s been retweeting and reposting updates about typhoon Maring on Twitter and Facebook. CHRISTIAN, ETC. So far she’s starred in one film, The Bride and the Lover, here. Doesn’t she have plans of becoming more visible in showbiz? A pause, before answering, “I think it would depend on the project. It will depend on that. “And I love doing theater shows as well so I wanna

dedicate my time to that, and allow myself the freedom to also take hosting jobs. “I think it really just depends on what’s new.” And our last question: How’s your love life? She laughed before repeating, “How’s my love life?” Smiling, Carla declared, “I’m happy single.” We asked, “What happened?” News about her breakup with Christian Bautista surfaced in July, barely five months after their first anniversary. Carefully choosing her words, Carla replied, “I think both of us, we’re still very good friends, you know, we still look out for each other, we still wish each other the best. “But I think, at this point in time in both of our lives, we just need to focus on our work.”

Hollywood Reviews By alan samuel

Lovelace (PG) * * * Hard Love! Sure to raise temperatures is the big screen release of Lovelace. Brave studio EOne Entertainment smartly recreates the era of the swinging seventies and takes us back in time to meet a one of a kind performer. Get in on all the action at the Empire Esplanade Theatre. Most people today likely don’t own a VCR. Back in the day one of the key reasons people bought video cassette recorders, much like the main driving force that led to the popularity of the internet was (and is) the desire to watch pornography in the privacy of private homes. Just like Canadian politician Pierre Elliott Trudeau said, the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation. David Cameron aside, the lead lady that set the porn world ablaze and made porn chic was Linda Lovelace. In a stirring movie Lovelace looks at the meteoric rise of this star in the making. Right from the start this film deftly explores all the key people in Ms. Lovelace’s life. Cast as the wayward girl is Amanda Seyfried (Mama Mia!) in another star turning role. Each time she takes the screen Seyfried continues to grow and impress. Early on we see just how this small town girl got mixed up in the shady world of adult films. Through a chance meeting our leading lady, while just 21, meets up with sly bar owner Chuck Traynor. Ultimately these two would be married and Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey) is explosive in this character. Not a nice man to be sure, we bear witness to all the abuse this woman puts up with as she is essentially coerced into making a porn movie. Mind you, this is not just any dirty movie – it’s Deep Throat. All the characters in this low budget classic are well presented here. There is director Gerry Damiano, aced by Hank Azaria and the usual adult icons like Harry Reems, well put together by Adam Brody. Where Lovelace truly shines is exploring the home life Linda had, with two parents who didn’t quite give the youngster the necessary leeway to spread her wings. Too bad for her the spreading of another part of the anatomy and the particular use of a mouth like no other made her an instant celebrity. Smart use of vintage footage and outstanding use of music and dress from the era make Lovelace a real fine movie which perfectly captures the inner workings of the porn industry, warts and all. Sad in the extreme, the film also points to the tragic results of being trapped in an uncaring relationship with shattering results. About the only disappointment to this jointly directed 92 minute biography by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman is the miscasting of James Franco. Aside from this miscue Lovelace is a well made movie that has to be seen!

Power Through Every day before dusk, Manuel Darson Andaya II is in his backyard, pounding away on those rebreakable plastic boards. Sometimes they break, sometimes they don’t. When they don’t, the force of the blow travels back to his arm or leg as a sharp pain. This is our body’s way of telling us “Do not do it again.” An ordinary person would listen and never come close to that board again. A champion endures. He resets, readjusts his technique, shakes off the pain, and does what real champions do; he grits his teeth, and tries harder. Second degree black belt Manuel Darson Andaya II, has been winning Taekwon-do Tournaments since he started training in 2007. This year, his first year to qualify as a Junior Black belt, his success has taken him to the international level. On October 23-27 in Benidorm, Spain, Andaya, 14, will be testing his skills among the best technicians in the world at the World Championship tournament. As the only successful qualifier for the event, Andaya will be the only representative of the Canadian National Team to compete for the Junior Powerbreaking event. “This is a double honour. I am a Filipino-Canadian. Not only do I represent Canada, my home, I also represent where I come from, the Philippines, “says Andaya, who was born

in Manila but grew up in Vancouver. “I aim to win a medal, but win or lose, I will be sure to go home knowing I gave it all I have and I did my very best. “ Andaya, 14, promises. The Junior Powerbreaking event is open to Black belts from 14 to 17 years old. “It will be harder for me, compared to say a heavier, 17 year old, to break those boards, but I accept the challenge. I’ve done it at the nationals; I hope to do it at the worlds.”

Andaya qualified for the Worlds at the Canada National Taekwondo Championship on May 18 and 19 in Quebec City. Against older, heavier and more experienced opponents,

he won the gold medal in Powerbreaking. None of the other four competitors were able to qualify. “A person with more mass certainly has an advantage,” father and Coach, Darius Andaya, IV Dan, explains, “but with these boards, brute strength is not enough. The key is on the technique. Master the technique, and you get the most chance of surviving it without injury.” Andaya, trains with the DSA Royal International Taekwon-do Club at the Collingwood House at 5288 Joyce st. under his father, Mr Darius Andaya or DSA. “I started the club to be able to teach my children. It just grew from there. I am very happy that they grew to love taekwondo as much as I do.”, he says. “I expect a really strong performance from him. He has been training hard and certainly very dedicated. No matter what happens, I’m already very proud of him.” The passion and love for taekwondo, is truly evident in the family. Their youngest at 4 recently joined in, while Darryl, the third child in the family, does not let his condition stop him from enjoying the family sport. “Down syndrome is a disability, but it doesn’t mean he is disabled. The good thing about taekwondo is that

students can do it at their own pace. Their improvements are not solely based on what everybody else does, but on what they accomplish for themselves.” DSA explains. “Darson would be our first student to reach an international level competition, not to mention the honour of representing the Canadian flag. Of course we will do all we can to get him there”, DSA says as he plans another fundraising event. “We are truly thankful for everyone’s help but we do need more. Unfortunately, it is not a sponsored event and the financial cost is high. We have to raise our own funds. We hope fellow Filipinos, and of course Canadians, can give any support they can. ” So as the sun hid behind the picturesque mountains in that lonely backyard, the thumping and crashing of boards continue. It will be a few more minutes before he stops. For several more times, he will

fail to break the boards. For several more times, he will grit his teeth and try again. When at last his technique gives him satisfaction and the boards crack and explodes upon impact with his foot, there will be no one to see it but him. But

that is enough. There may be no glory in practice, but without practice there is no glory. Let glory come in its own time, and if it doesn’t come, then it is not the time. Please support Manuel’s World Championship dreams by contacting us through our website at dsataekwondo.com or by donating at http://www. gofundme.com/senddarsontospain. Any amount will be highly appreciated.

Meanwhile the Philippines’ Marfori Team A headed by Grandmaster-elect Ronald Dableo dumped Chesskidz Next Generation of Singa-

pore, 3.5—0.5, on Sundayto grab the 33rd Astro Merdeka Rapid Open Team Championship crown at the Cititel Mid Valley Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Marfori Team A composed of Dableo, FM Leonardo Carlos, FM Christopher Castellano, Ivan Gil Biag and Li Tao, finished on top of the heap with 17 points among 106 participant countries in the nine-round Swiss system match point format tournament also named as the 10th Malay-

sian Chess Festival 2013. Nouri, who hails from Escalante City, Negros Occidental became a FIDE Master last June when he played above the rest in the 14th ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships 2013 Standard competition at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand. National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay lauded Nouri for his victory. “This only proves that Filipinos can

be world beaters in any kind of sport with grit, determination and long preparation for any event. We are witnessing the makings of another potential world chess champion,” Pichay said. Nouri, a seven-year old, grade 1 pupil of FEU-FERN College in Quezon City who was named after chess genius Alexander Alekhine won straight five matches before agreeing to a draw with Aayush Pinakin Barot of India in the final round for a total of

5.5 points out of a perfect six outings. Nouri cruised by a tough field composed of Megat Zaid, Megat Mohd Khushair, Alden Goh Kai Ray, Raynell Ng Li Hern, Shreesh Amit Chembeti and Wong Zi Yue of Malaysia. Nouri actually finished with the same score (5.5) together with Malaysia’s Ryan Lee of Malaysia but the Filipino had a better tiebreak points at 24.5 versus Lee’s 22.0 to grab the gold medal.

Kobe Bryant back in Manila, pitches Phl teamwork to ensure good showing in World Cup in Spain PASAY CITY -- Teamwork would well make a difference in making the Philippines national basketball team put up a good showing at next year’s FIBA World Cup in Spain. This was stressed by basketball star Kobe Bryant after arrival in Manila to endorse Lenovo’s flagship K900 smartphone at the Maxim’s Hotel in Resorts World, Pasay City. Asked on the Philippines chances during the press conference, Bryant said he likes the Filipinos’ passion when it comes to basketball. He added Asians are doing well in basketball. On Sunday, the Philippine national

team landed runner-up to Iran, making them one of the three countries to represent Asia in the 2014 FIBA World Cup together with third placer South Korea, PNA’s Luis Morente reported. To put the Philippines back in the world basketball map, Bryant has this advice: “It is how well you blend together to be a team. More important than anything else is the teamwork.” The Los Angeles Lakers guard is trying to recover from an Achilles heel injury he sustained in the playoffs of the National Basketball Association earlier this year. Bryant said his team is currently in focus to nail another championship

despite being hobbled by injuries last NBA season. “Hopefully, it is not so tough this year,” Bryant said. Bryant inspired others not to quit which he sees as a “sign of weakness.” To recover from injury, Bryant said his hunger for excellence makes him push himself to get things accomplished . “I’m pretty ahead of schedule. I’m training non-stop,” he said. In case he retires from professional basketball, Bryant said he wants to leave a legacy “as a person who maximizes his potential and time.” Bryant was also asked what are his

top three wishes: “It is winning a sixth ring, second topmost is winning a sixth ring, and third is winning a sixth ring.” Bryant arrived on a private plane. His flight was to touch down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 1 am, but bad weather delayed his flight and landed in Manila at around 3:30 am. Bryant’s appearance at SM MOA is originally set at 10:30 but was moved later in the day. This is the sixth time Bryant visited Manila. Once for Adidas, three times for Nike, and the last time was in 2011 when he was together with a group of young National Basketball Association.

With 6 gold medals, PH places 5th in Asian Junior Wushu tourney MAKATI CITY —-The Philippines added four more golds last Sunday in the 7th Asian Junior Wushu Championships at the Makati Coliseum but the effort placed the Filipinos only fifth in the tournament. Thirteen-year-old Vanessa Jo Chan scored 9:20 points for the gold in the Group B Ist set jianshu, only a point above silver medalist Zahra Kiani of Iran with 9.19 and bronze medalist Japan’s Yuko Ota with 9.14. The Grade 8 Baguio Patriotic School student raised her haul to two golds and one bronze, including the country’s triumph in the 8-man group exhibition and a third-place finish in the girls’ 1st set qiangshu (spear) where she scored 9.11 points. The country’s second gold went to Johnzenth Gajo with 8.99 points in the Group C men’s elementary gunshu.

The 11-year-old son of a jeepney driver and housewife, who was introduced to wushu by a classmate at the Project 6 Elementary School, made his memorable feat in his debut in an international meet. Noel Alabata scored a pulsating victory against Vietnam’s Vu Minh Duc in the 48 kg men’s sanda fourth session. The day’s first silver medal was captured by 18-year old Vivine Wally who lost to China’s gold medalist. Guan Acui and the second was by Ilonggo pride Thommy Aligaga, loser to Iran’s Afshin Salimi Touphara in the 52kg finals for men’s sanda. The 17-year-old Zamboanga Cityborn Alabata impressed the crowd and the judges for his strength and shrewdness since as he threw off the bigger and and taller Iranian. The country’s other three gold med-

als were won by its group exhibition and 15-year old Ken Alieson Umengan’s golden effort in the nanquan (southern fist) in taolu form with score of 9.33 points last Friday. Bronze medalists were Clemente Tabugara Jr. and Vita Zamora, who both lost their semis matches in the women’s 52-kg. and men’s 56-kg. divisions, respectively. “I would like to congratulate all of our gold-medal winners and our other medalists,” said Wushu Federation of the Philippines president Tan She Ling. “You have truly made our country proud by your accomplishments.” Emerging as the topnotcher in the Southeast Asian region, the Philippines emerged fifth overall in the medal standings at the end of the four-day competition with a proud haul of six

gold, five silver and five bronze medals. Indonesia (5-8-6), Vietnam (4-14-5) and Malaysia (4-3-6) wound up in sixth, seventh and eighth spots, respectively, behind the hosts. China lorded it over the field as expected, driving its total to 18 golds, including six in the sanda competitions, plus 1` silver and one bronze while former British Colony Hongkong was distant second (7-7-3) and Iran third (7-5-6). On Saturday night, Kimberly Macuha, another Wushu Discovery protégé, bagged the other bronze in the 12-andunder girls elementary daoshu (8.98) in an otherwise dismal outing for the hometown athletes late Saturday night. Agatha Chrystenzen Wong, who won a gold last Friday, typified the lackluster form of the Filipinos.
