32 REASONS TO SMILE Thirty-two are the number of teeth in an average mouth. When a person’s teeth are missing, stained or discolored, chipped, cracked, crooked or have too many silver fillings, they may feel inhibited to smile. This is where Dr. Barry Cohan and Advanced Dentistry & Implantology comes in.

Implantology Whether you need all, several, or just one tooth replaced, dental implants are often the best choice for you. Dental implants are the most natural replacement for missing teeth. Without attaching anything to other teeth or needlessly filing down previously untreated teeth, dental implants are now routine procedure for the replacement of teeth. Implants look a lot like the root of a tooth and are made of a material compatible with the jaw. They can be done with local anesthesia, in our office and generally in one visit. Implants have been acknowledged since the 1960’s, but have become more commonplace since the late 1980’s. They have a 90 to 99% success rate, depending on the type of implant and the area they are being placed. Implants are reasonably affordable, and often-times less expensive than the cost of a 3 unit bridge when replacing a single tooth. And with more insurance companies covering a portion of the cost, your good feeling and well being that you receive from having implants, will be priceless!

Dr. Michael Abrams

Dentistry

A proven leader in dental implants and more Dr. Michael Abrams, a specialist in periodontal work and implants, is a dentist who is a leader in his field.. His beautiful state-of-the-art facility is located in Bergen Beach/ Mill Basin at 6910 Avenue U (718-4443800). Among his many accomplishments is that he invented the process of computerized dental implant placement. “This patented technique,” he says, “has really revolutionized the oral implantology field.” It is now used throughout the country. It provides dentists with guides, so that implants may be placed more accurately., safely and in a minimally-invasive manner. Before this new technology, implant placement could be “very difficult, time-consuming and traumatic for the patient,” he says. Adding, “What once was a two hour procedure can now be done in less than half the time.” The technology is based on a CT scan of the of the patient’s jawbone. This provides the doctor with an accurate 3-dimensional picture of the site where the patient is missing teeth. This ensures that there are no surprises at the time of implant placement. “Dental implant treatment is both a science and an art. Poorly or inaccurately placed implants can lead to significant compromise for the outcome of the case,” says Dr. Abrams. What could be a beautiful result for the patient can be turned into a nightmare if errors are made by the implant surgeon. At Brooklyn Periodontics and Implantology, Dr. Abrams delivers the highest level of expertise to provide the patient with implanted teeth that are both functional and naturally beautiful. Dr. Abrams has traveled the coun6

try, lecturing for various professional dental organizations about his innovative treatments. He has presented twice as a main podium speaker at the Academy of Osseointegration Annual meeting. The AO is the most prestigious dental implant organization worldwide. Here in Brooklyn, he is the founder and director of The Brooklyn Dental Forum Study Club. This professional educational forum provides dentists in the community with lecture presentations from outstanding experts in the dental field.. These informative seminars are great at keeping dental professionals up to date on the latest advances in dentistry. In addition to keeping up with his very active implant practice, Dr. Abrams serves as Vice President of Implant Logic Systems, Inc. the

Dr. Barry Cohan

Dental Implantologist

Restoring your dazzling smile Dr. Barry Cohan is “one of the few implantologists in Brooklyn,”. The Board-certified doctor practices surgery and restorative dentistry. He is also certified in Invisalign, the invisible way to straighten teeth. The Brooklyn-born Dr. Cohan has been serving the community for 27 years. “My philosophy is always to aid in the overall health of my patients,” he says. It is for this reason that he recommends regular cleanings to maintain overall wellbeing. “It is a known fact that a diseased mouth can be a cause of illness in other parts of the body,” he says. “By practicing preventive dentistry, with emphasis on regular maintenance in oral care for the preservation of teeth and gums, my patients will reap the benefits of overall health,” he says. It is because of this philosophy that the doctor “has not placed a mercury-silver (amalgam) filling in seven years,” he says. “For one simple reason — I know it is not safe. Mercury is a well-known toxic metal.” While using mercury-silver may be a cheaper way to fill a tooth, in the long run, it “can compromise your health, taking a toll financially, physically, and emotionally,” he says. The doctor points out that it is illegal to use amalgam in “several European nations,” and that American manufacturers “put warnings in the amalgam packaging, stating not to place mercury-silver in pregnant women.” Interestingly, he says that some doctors are calling “for the cessation of using mercury-filled thermometers.” When you look good, you feel good, and this contributes to overall 8

well-being, too. If you haven’t been happy with your smile, Dr. Cohan is the person to see. He can assist with bleaching, veneers, and laser bonding. One of his fields of expertise includes Invisalign. “Invisalign has helped people all over the world achieve the smiles they have always wanted,” says the doctor, and it accomplishes this feat “without metal braces.” If teeth are crooked, protruding, or should there be something wrong with your bite, Invisalign can transform your smile. It works like this: Patients wear a set of custom-made Aligners which are removed when you eat, drink, and brush your teeth. While worn, your teeth gradually move into the desired position. Patients

sonably affordable, and often-times less expensive than the cost of a three-unit bridge,” he says. Generally speaking, the procedure can be done with local anesthesia, often “in one visit,” says the doctor, an expert in this field. Dr. Cohan is a graduate of the NYU College of Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and has completed numerous postdoctoral and advanced programs in Dental Implantology and TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction, commonly known as TMJ. TMJ is a misalignment of the jaws. Symptoms can include headache, neck pain, backache, earaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, chronic fatigue, pain, and more. But there is good news. Dr. Cohan can help. “Years of pain and suffering can be alleviated by techniques and appliances specially designed to realign the jaws,” he says. The state-of-the-art office consists of career professionals who are highly trained and sensitive to the needs of others, he says. In particular, they are “sensitive to the

problems and personal nature of the severely handicapped dental patient, as well as an anxiety-filled patient.” In addition to the Brooklyn location, Dr. Cohan has a practice on Long Island.

Dr. Stephen Cohen

Dentistry

Specializing in bright beautiful smiles When you smile, do you like what you see? The patients who make regular visits to the dental office of Dr. Stephen Cohen sure do. Dr. Cohen is a highly skilled dentist, with over 25 years of experience in the field. He has lectured across the country, offering insight about his profession to his peers. During his career, he has taught classes; was instrumental in the development of a senior citizen dental clinic; and then volunteered his services there. He has a thriving practice in general dentistry with a specialty in prosthodontics (caps and bridges), in the neighborhood he likes to refer to as “the heart of Park Slope.” Dr. Cohen believes “There’s nothing like your own teeth,” which is why he educates his patients on how to maintain them. He stresses caring for the gums, promising that people who take care of their gums “do not have as many problems,” as those who neglect them. In fact, caring for your gums can help save your teeth, and promote good health. For those who require it, Dr. Cohen will perform root planing and curettage. This treatment cleans parts of the teeth, below the gum line. Even if you brush regularly, this area may be difficult to reach. Yet, if neglected, gum “pockets” can start to develop around the teeth, and this can lead to disease, as the bone supporting the teeth weakens. Root planing cleans out the pockets, removing bacteria and plaque that may have accumulated. When performed, this procedure can save your teeth and prevent gum disease. If you’re among the many who avoid smiling because you’re embarrassed to show chipped, cracked, uneven, or gapped teeth, Dr. Cohen 10

can help. “We use state-of-the-art resin bonded restorations,” he says, and with proper care, your new bright and beautiful smile, will “last a long time.” Today’s bonding can take care of a multitude of problems, including teeth that are stained or crooked. Likewise, those in need of bridges or crowns will be delighted with their attractive appearance. “We do perfect color matching,” says the doctor. Caps are made from a combination of metal and porcelain materials for a very natural appearance. The laboratory that creates caps, crowns, and bridges, is “excellent,” says the doctors. As a result, patients leave the office, feeling secure that the new additions to their mouths are “well-fitted and beautiful.” Bridges are used to replace missing teeth, allowing you to look good cosmetically, and to be able to chew food properly. They are also important because they prevent teeth from shifting to “fill in” open spaces in the mouth. Should this happen, it can affect your ability to eat, cause tooth decay, and other complications. Your safety and well-being are always uppermost on the doctor’s mind. The instruments he uses are autoclaved through a hospital grade sterilization procedure. All of the equipment used at the office is the finest, state-of-the-art equipment available in dentistry today, says the doctor. For example, he uses a fiber-optic drill which allows him to “better visually inspect patients’ mouths.” X-rays are taken with a panoramic x-ray machine, which provides the doctor with a much more efficient way of looking at a person’s entire mouth. This incredible invention offers benefits to patients too. It has much less radia-

tion that a full set of smaller x-rays, and many people find that it’s a more comfortable procedure. Making patients comfortable and keeping them at ease is Dr. Cohen’s priority. “The patient is always respected,” he says, and this courtesy begins when someone walks though the door of the office. The staff are trained professionals “who really care about people,” says the doctor, and who help set the tone so that a trip to this dental office is a “gentle, kind, and relaxed experience.” For starters, you won’t sit in the waiting room, anxiously waiting for time to pass because everyone at this facility values time, including yours. “We take patients exactly on time,” says Dr. Cohen. You won’t find his waiting room brimming with people because the office schedules patients by appointment only, he says, and it’s done in an efficient manner. When you do see Dr. Cohen, he will take his time with you, patiently answer any questions you may have, and fully explain any procedures that you may require. After all, he is an expert in the field of oral restoration and prosthodontics. Patients can rest assured, knowing that they are the hands of a professional, who has

Dr. Saka Kazeem

Internal Medicine & Endocrinology

Dedicated to heart disease prevention Keeping the heart healthy is the goal of ELK Medical. They strive to achieve this goal by offering a Diabetes Education Program; by the practices in place at their Weight Loss Center; and by integrating medicine with holistic approaches to prevent and treat illness, says Dr. Saka Kazeem, Medical Director. “We use vitamins and nutrients derived from plant roots to improve or prevent diabetes and other chronic illnesses.” ELK Medical uses a “wellness approach,” meaning that everything is done to prevent heart disease, “a problem that you get from diabetes, by being overweight,” and by a number of other chronic conditions, including thyroid problems, the doctor says. The most up-to-date technology is used to assist these endeavors, including a wireless diabetes monitoring system that records data, and that is then downloaded into a computer, providing the doctor with specific and accurate information. Medication can then be adjusted for each individual, using these statistics. It works like this: The doctor says he provides this “small medical device” to the patient, and it is worn on the back or the stomach. “You then go about your business,” he says, for three days, while this “very powerful unit measures sugar, and provides us with a lot more information than can be obtained by pricing a finger.” ELK Medical also diagnoses “prediabetes, treating and preventing,” it. This is when blood levels “are not normal,” explains the doctor, “but not in the diabetes range” yet. Taking these steps early on, means that diabetes can be prevented about “60%” of the time, he says. How is this achieved? “With very aggressive monitoring and with special meals.” Diet is very important. A nutritionist is on staff, and patients are provided with detailed menus, booklets, 14

DVDs, and calendars to record what they eat. Low-glycemic meals are recommended. “This is food that doesn’t make sugars go too high,” the doctor says. A selection of recommended vegetables, protein, fruit, and starch are provided, and eating these types of meals is not just good for people who have diabetes; it’s good for everyone because it “keeps the heart healthy,” he says. For example, food that is high in fiber, coupled with an exercise program, prevents diabetes and “promotes wellness,” the doctor says. Interestingly, he points out that green bananas contain “high complex carbohydrates, and are very high in fiber,” while those that are “too ripe, turn right into sugar.” Likewise, watermelon is not necessarily a fruit to indulge in. “It’s too high in sugar.” Eating the right type of bread is also important. Dr. Kazeem says that a piece of white bread and a piece of wheat bread could have the same amount of calories, but white bread will increase sugar levels, so it’s better to eat wheat bread. Likewise, white potatoes have “a high glycemic index,” he says, while sweet potatoes contain more fiber, and have a low glycemic index. If you’re looking to lose weight, eat the same type of meals recommended for those who have diabetes — meals that are high in fiber and contain a low glycemic index, says the doctor, as this is the type of diet that promotes well-being and healthy hearts. It’s the practice in place at their Weight Loss Center. Those who are part of their weight loss program also attend group classes once a week. This is beneficial, says Dr. Kazeem because it “makes intentions known, helps with bonding, and provides a little bit of peer pressure,” which encourages people to succeed. Generally speaking, there are about 10-12 people in a class, he

Dr. Saka Kazeem

says, and each session runs for about three months. Osteoporosis is also treated at ELK Medical. This very common condition often goes undiagnosed, and can cause height loss as well as bone breaks and fractures, says the doctor. Risk factors include drinking, smoking, taking certain medications, and family history. Yet, osteoporosis can be treated, and there are a variety of options available including medication and injections, says Dr. Kazeem. ELK Medical also treats thyroid disease. This butterfly-shaped gland, located at the base of the neck, controls many body functions. If it is overactive, it can cause weight loss, rapid heart beat, nervousness, anxiety, sweating, and tremors. It may be difficult to sleep. The doctors at ELK Medical can treat hyperthyroidism with medication, and some times with radioactive iodine that will slow the thyroid’s function, allowing you “to be yourself again,” says Dr. Kazeem. Likewise, under active thyroids, which cause weight gain and sluggishness, are also treated here. Overactive hormones may cause excess hair growth, and this can be treated with a laser hair removal system that’s available at the Park Slope office. Those who have trouble sleeping may wish to visit the sleep lab at the Park Slope location. Participating in a sleep study can assist those who suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that impacts the heart, says the doctor. Instead of getting a good night’s rest,

Who’s Who In Brooklyn Medicine

people with sleep apnea wake up throughout the night. By participating in a sleep study, “we can find out what’s going on,” says Dr. Kazeem. As a result, “It will prevent heart and lung problems” that may arise down the road. In addition to Dr. Kazeem, experts on staff at ELK Medical include Dr. Bhanu Iyer, internist; Karishma Sukhdeo, physician assistant and certified insulin pump specialist; and Jacqueline Patterson-Johnson, nurse practitioner, and certified diabetes educator. Kings Highway Orthopedics

Orthopedics

Keeping weekend warriors in the game So many of us have such active lifestyles — we bend, stretch, walk, and run without giving thought to the flexibilities of our bodies. But when our physiques suffer trauma — be it a fracture, sprain, torn meniscus or rotator cuff — we feel pain, and often change our lifestyles to avoid feeling this distress. With proper treatment, however, lifestyles don’t have to be curtailed. The highly-trained doctors at Kings Highway Orthopedic Associates specialize in the latest orthopedic procedures used to treat physical injuries. In fact, they are rated among the best in our area. Kings Highway Orthopedics was formed in 1985. Our mission from the beginning has been to be readily available to our patients. Dr. Todd B. Soifer, one of the staff’s outstanding doctors, is the Chief of Orthopedics at Beth Israel Medical Center’s Kings Highway Division, and is Board Certified in Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery. For several years, he has been named “one of the best doctors in New York” by New York Magazine. That’s terrific to know, but there’s more good news: “Many fractures and sprains (injuries) can be treated right at the office,” Dr. Soifer says. For example, “weekend warriors” — those active individuals who spend their free time engaged in sports — sometimes find they suffer injuries to shoulders, wrists, hands, knees, and ankles. Yet, there’s often no 2008

need to spend hours sitting around the emergency room of hospitals, as these injuries can be treated and set in place right at the Kings Highway office. Even those who suffer recurrent pain can often find relief at Kings Highway Orthopedic Associates. Certainly arthritis falls into this category, and fortunately, it’s a condition the doctors have been able to treat with a great deal of success. A new procedure that has helped many patients involves injections of a gel or protein into the knee, an area where arthritis often settles. These injections “refurbish lost cartilage, and possibly decrease inflammation,” says Dr. Soifer. Just as important, the entire procedure can be done right at the office, and it is covered by most medical plans. When it comes to all ailments, “We treat conservatively,” the doctor assures, “with non-surgical treatment, the first line of choice when possible.” This may include the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants, bracing, exercise and/or physical therapy. It is only “after all treatments are exhausted,” that surgery is recommended. One such procedure is an arthroscopy, used to treat damaged tissue. A small camera, “only 3-4 millimeters wide,” is utilized in the treatment of many knee and shoulder injuries. This allows repairs to be made without large incisions, says the doc-

tor. Best of all “recovery time is much more rapid.” In addition to the expertise of Dr. Soifer, there are other notable doctors at Kings Highway Orthopedics. Dr. Robert H. Copulsky specializes in Worker’s Compensation injuries as well as Pediatric and Geriatric Orthopedics. Dr. Daniel J. Morgan is the hip and knee replacement specialist whose specialties also include shoulder surgery and sports medicine. He performs the majority of hip and knee replacements for the group as well as most of the hip fracture surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center, Kings Highway division. In addition, in the appropriate patient, Dr. Morgan is providing the new and state-ofthe-art minimally invasive surgery for hip and knee replacements in which the surgical scar is about one-third the size of the old, traditional scar. Dr. Nicholas Harding is a

sports medicine specialist and specializes in minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and knee. His specialty includes advanced skills in shoulder and rotator cuff surgery, including arthroscopic repairs. His specialty also includes sports medicine injuries of the shoulder and knee, as well as arthroscopy and meniscus repair of the knee. In addition, these highly skilled doctors have established a Physical Therapy Center at their location. ADDRESS:

All of Kingsbrook’s emergency physician’s are Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and adhere to the highest standards of emergency care. Additionally, Kingsbrook’s Emergency Department remains on the cutting edge of advancement and technology with superior information platforms such as an Electronic Medical Records System, which is at the forefront of our national health care agenda and considered to be a critical first step to sharing precise data between practicing physicians, pharmacies and hospitals. Also, Kingsbrook’s Emergency Department Information System (EDIS), is an essential component that helps enhance the overall quality of care for patients and decreases wait times. The awardwinning system tracks patients through the Emergency Department visit from triage to discharge, and provides patients with discharge instructions and prescriptions. The computerized system includes many features to improve patient safety and efficiency such as automatic checking for patient drug/drug and drug/allergy interactions, exten18

sive data collection and reporting, clinical documentation, and order entry and result reporting. The system also provides complete electronic medical records for Emergency Department patients. “Our ultimate goal is to provide an outstanding level of service for those who need immediate urgent care,” stated Dr. Hew, Director of the Emergency Medicine at Kingsbrook. “We want our community members to know that we are doing a great job of providing that level of service with compassion and respect.” Kingsbrook’s NRC Picker ratings (standardized survey results reporting comparable info on hospital care) for 4th Quarter 2007 echo Dr. Hew’s sentiments, as ratings in cleanliness, nurse courtesy, physician courtesy and overall quality of care were all above state and national averages. Collective input has helped advance and mobilize the emergency division to a new level of care and quality. Thus far, the turnaround time for someone coming into the Emergency Department has improved significantly. This in itself is a remarkable feat and one the Emergency team at Kingsbrook plans to sustain and improve upon. Through the coordinated efforts of the Emergency Medicine team of Dr. Phillip Hew, MD, FACEP, Director; Manuel Delgado, Administrator/FDNY Liaison, Cynthia Wright, RN, Associate Director and Nursing, there has been a sustained improvement in the delivery and quality of care

Dr. Michael Mendelsohn

Pediatric Otolaryngology

Connecting with kids: caring with excellence Dr. Michael G. Mendelsohn is a fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngology (ears, nose, and throat doctor) who is considered one of the top New York City metro area otolaryngologists by Castle Connelly. He recently became associated with ENT and Allergy Associates, and as a result, Dr. Sheldon Palgon, a board-certified otolaryngologist, has joined him and the staff at the Bensonhurst 86th Street location. Dr. Palgon also practices at a second convenient location in Bensonhurst: 802 64th Street, Suite 3A-E. All told, ENT and Allergy Associates has 25 offices in the tristate area, making it the largest ENT, allergy and audiology practice in the area, says the doctor. There are very few fellowshiptrained ENT physicians who are trained in pediatrics, says Dr. Mendelsohn, which means the children in our area are in especially good hands, as the doctor can deal with issues that may differ from those associated with adults. He is knowledgeable about all the latest practices and procedures, and there are “a lot of innovations in the field,” says Dr. Mendelsohn. For example, he is an expert in intracapsular tonsillectomy, “a new method for removing tonsils in children with obstructed sleep disorders,” he says. Children who have obstructed sleep disorders may have “a pause in breathing during sleep,” or they may “sleep with their mouths wide open, resulting in snoring,” he says. This latest procedure, “has a lower risk, and quicker recovery time” than traditional tonsillectomies. “It is safer. It can be performed on younger children on an outpatient basis.” Dealing with children requires a 2008

lot of patience, and Dr. Mendelsohn is especially patient when it comes to treating the many children referred to him by pediatricians for ear and throat infections. “I connect with children,” he says, “And I can also relate to the child’s parents,” many of whom are understandably concerned about their child’s welfare. Ear infections continue to be something from which many children suffer, as they are often caused by “the common cold,” says Dr. Mendelsohn. “Some children are more prone to them than others, and the reason is not quite known,” he says. “It could be genetic, environmental, their own immune systems, or allergies might play a role.”

Dr. Sheldon Palgon The office features state-of-theart care for all ear, nose, throat, and allergy disorders. Dr. Mendelsohn received his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine, part of the Six Year Accelerated Liberal Arts/Medical Education Program. He holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Interestingly, he has traveled to Africa to teach and to operate. Dr. Sheldon Palgon has been practicing otolaryngology in Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 20 years. Neergaard Pharmacy

Pharmaceutical Products

Always there for you day or night For more than 100 years Brooklyn residents have been able to rely upon Neergaard Pharmacy. This incredible store was established in 1888, says Tom Sutherland, the manager, and it has been open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, since World War I. The staff has been there for countless borough residents who have been awakened in the middle of the night by a sick child, says Tom. “When they didn’t know where to turn, we were here to support them.” I can remember depending on Neergaard Pharmacy during those middle-ofthe-night emergencies myself, and so have countless neighbors. In fact, Neergaard Pharmacy is the proud recipient of an award of accreditation status by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc. (ACHC). The standards for this award were developed by home care and community-based providers to help companies improve the quality of patient care. ACHC President Tom Cesar says, “The survey process leads an organization to examine its policies and practices continually to clarify its strengths and improve its weaknesses.” Accreditation is a voluntary process during which healthcare organizations submit to peer review of their internal policies and patient care delivery, comparing them to national standards. By attaining accreditation, Neergaard Pharmacy has demonstrated its commitment to maintain a higher level of competency and to strive for excellence in its products, services, and customer satisfaction. For decades, they were the just about the only pharmacy in the borough opened 24 hours. Now, Tom 22

says, there are a few other pharmacies opened 24 hours, but not all have a pharmacist available in the wee hours. “We are one of the few who have a pharmacist on duty at all times,” he notes. And, when your doctor prescribes something, odds are Neergaard Pharmacy has it. “We carry hard to find medications,” says Tom. This neighborhood pharmacy has been part of the community for so long, it’s a feat that’s incredible by any standards. When you consider that in recent years, some of the large chain pharmacies have moved into the neighborhood, it’s even more impressive. How do they manage to do stay in business and be so good at it? “It’s the personalized service we provide,” says Rosemarie Tomassetti, whose family has owned the business for the last 20 years. She notes that three generations of families have kept the Neergaard traditions going, including her family. “We provide the same quality service” for which the pharmacy has always been noted, she says. As a result, they’ve not only survived, they’ve doubled their size. Neergaard Pharmacy now has three levels. There’s a surgical showroom on the lower level that contains equipment such as scooters, wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen equipment, lift chairs, hospital beds, bathroom safety items such as grab bars, stools, chairs, mats, hand-held showers; and so many other healthcare products people need. Customers are permitted to try out a number of them before making a purchase, says Tom. For some items, there is free delivery and set up in the home, he adds. You’ll also find necessities such as therapeutic shoes; canes; breast-feed-

ing accessories, including bras and pumps; diabetes testing equipment; support stockings; and so much more. The second floor is a fun-filled place, stocked with a variety of games, puzzles, educational toys, arts and crafts, ride-on vehicles, and stuffed animals. Browse from the endless array, and when you make your selections, Neergaard Pharmacy will wrap your purchases for you. This same convenience applies to purchases made in the cosmetics department. Choose from among the many skin care and fragrance gift sets, and leave with packages that are ready to present as get well gifts, birthday presents, or for any other special occasion. Name brands they have on hand include Ahava, L’Oreal, Revlon, Clinique, Lancome, Polo, Ralph Lauren, and Oil of Olay, just to name a handful. No doubt your favorite is among the many they carry. As greeting cards are also sold on the premises, Neergaard Pharmacy is a one-stop shop. There’s no need to shop anywhere else. When you’ve been part of the community as long as Neergaard Pharmacy, you’re involved in a lot more than selling pharmaceutical items. One of the events Neergaard Pharmacy enjoys sponsoring each year are baseball games in Prospect

Park, says Tom. These games seem to go hand-in-hand with the shop’s philosophies: “We care about you,” and “Your good health is our business.” Aside from the Fifth Avenue location, Neergaard Pharmacy has a shop at 120 Seventh Avenue, 718-8571600. Women’s Health

NYM opens new Institute for Women’s Health New York Methodist Hospital continues to offer the highest level of advanced, comprehensive healthcare for women at every stage of their lives. Recently, the Hospital brought together all of its high quality women health services through the establishment of the Institute for Women’s Health. The Institute offers a full range of women’s programs and services, including gynecologic care, diagnostic tests for breast and gynecologic disease, a counseling program and genetic testing, fertility treatments, a prenatal care assistance program, a spacious fully renovated Birthing Center and full range of obstetrical services, including prenatal testing, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, gynecologic oncology, a urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, and a menopause and osteoporosis program. Here, a closer look at some of the physicians at the Institute.

director of the Institute’s Advanced Women’s Imaging and Prenatal Testing Center. Dr. Haratz-Rubinstein is fellowshiptrained in obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound and has published extensively on the subject. “It’s entirely natural for expecting parents to have concerns about whether they will have a healthy baby. Fortunately,” said Dr. Haratz. “The sophisticated prenatal tests available today can help expecting parents put worries about their baby’s health to rest or, in rare cases, allow them to plan for a delivery that will best meet the needs of the mother and her baby. Very few women need to undergo all of the prenatal tests that are available. Each woman’s obstetrician will prescribe the tests that he or she feels are important for a successful pregnancy and healthy baby.” Most tests fall into two categories: laboratory tests, in which small samples of blood or tissue are taken from the mother and sent to a laboratory and ultrasound exams, which are painless, noninvasive screenings that use sound waves reflected off the baby’s body to create images (sonograms) of the baby that can be seen on a television-like screen. Some of the medical conditions that Dr. Mastropietro treats include incontinence (loss of bladder or bowel control), prolapse (falling of the pelvic organs including the uterus, vagina, bladder, uretha, or rectum), and difficulty urinating. “Urogynecology involves comprehensive care of female pelvic floor disorders in order to dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life,” said Dr. Mastropietro.

Fertility-sparing surgery in early ovarian cancer involves removal of the affected ovary and performing biopsies of areas of potential metastases with preservation of the healthy ovary and uterus.

Katherine Economos, M.D. Gynecologic Oncology Care Katherine Economos, M.D., director of gynecologic oncology at New York Methodist Hospital, specializes in the treatment of cancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and other female reproductive organs. State-of-the-art surgery, chemotherapy, interventional radiology procedures and radiation therapy are available at New York Methodist. Many reproductive organ cancers require surgery, both to diagnose and treat the illness. If surgery is needed, patients may be offered the option of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery when appropriate. For example, laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy, can be used to perform hysterectomies. Dr. Economos can recommend fertil-

Dr. Javier Zelaya

Dermatology

A 10-year practice devoted to your healthy skin %∴ &∆ΠΛΟΟΗ 6ΣΗΥΥ∆]]∆ When you want top-of-the-line dermatology care, you go to Dr. Javier Zelaya. Dr. Zelaya has spent 10 years building his practice, and his patients are so pleased with his care, they often recommend him to others. “We’ll start with one patient, and end up treating the whole family,” says the doctor. He has a loyal following, based on word-of-mouth. Some of them travel from out of state. They come here because they know they will be in good hands. Whether the purpose of their visit is for cosmetic reasons, or for more serious issues, they know they will receive expert attention and care. The doctor performs dermatological cancer surgery, laser, and cosmetic procedures on an out-patient basis, right in a comfortable office setting. The Manhattan office has been described as “Zen-like.” It’s a medspa, offering a tranquil escape from the hurried everyday pace. It’s where patients come for professional medical and cosmetic services as well as indulgences such as waxing, facials, microdermabrasion, and spray-on tans. Maria Sierra is the aesthetician, NYS licensed in Aesthetics, Tattoo, and certified in Paramedical Camouflage. She makes everyone feel comfortable. Among the many spa services are stone massages and permanent makeup. A spray-on tanner will keep your skin looking healthy all year long. It’s non-toxic says the doctor. “It’s botanical and safe. It contains no dyes, and no artificial colors. It looks very natural on the skin.” Both locations offer state-of-theart technology, including laser treatments for hair removal of all skin types. The doctor has years of experience in this area of expertise, including issues related to ethnic skin. In particular, he treats “keloids,” 2008

described as “thick scars,” and “pseudofolliculitis,” ingrown hair around the neck and scalp. These conditions may be treated with topical creams, injections, and/or laser. Likewise, laser treatment is available for conditions such as blemishes, dark spots, red birth marks, Rosacia, and more. While it’s true that may chronic skin conditions may also be treated with creams, pills, and injections, new, sophisticated laser equipment provides “effective and safe” treatment today, says the doctor. It’s great to have so many options. For example, the Xtrac laser is used for vitiligo, a skin disorder whose characteristics include “light spots,” says the doctor. “It often doesn’t respond to creams, but can be treated with laser.” The Vbeam laser is designed to treat facial veins, red birthmarks, and benign vascular lesions such as hemangiomas and port wine stains, uneven coloring of neck, warts, and more. This is another alternate for those who suffer from these conditions and haven’t responded to topical creams, says Dr. Zelaya. Coolglide and GentleLase laser hair removal systems can safely remove hair from all parts of the body, including face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. They also treat sensitive areas, including bikini lines. Because they are designed with cooling systems, using this technology increases patient comfort and minimizes adverse skin reactions, says the doctor. Psoriasis and acne may also be treated with laser technology. There are a number of services available that help patients look younger. These include Botox Cosmetic which can soften wrinkles and lines around the eyes, forehead, mouth, and neck. Cosmetic Fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and

Dr. Javier Zelaya

Radiesse may be used to “fill-in” wrinkles or plump up lips and cheeks. They may also help acne scars. Photodynamic therapy, photo facials, and microdermabrasion promote healthier skin, leaving you looking radiant. A full line of medical grade skin care products are available to keep skin healthy. If you haven’t been to the doctor to have a full body exam, consider doing so. Dr. Zelaya says that it’s an ideal way to catch any potential problems “early,” which they can still be treated easily. “People may not realize conditions that they have,” he says. Should a dark spot on the skin have to be removed, it can be done right at the office. A biopsy will be performed, and if needed, a surgical excision will be conducted. “It’s onestop,” says the doctor, saving you time. After conditions are stabilized, yearly follow-ups will be scheduled, he says. Torn earlobes, moles, growths, scars, and skin tags may also be taken care of. The talented staff will see that you receive quality care throughout your visit. Dolores Blanti is the office manager who makes sure everyone is put at ease. Verna Broughton, RPA, along with the other members of the staff, assure your comfort and wellbeing at all times. The office is modern and efficient. A nearly paperless system is in place, says the doctor, allowing for accurate and up-to-date record-keeping. Take comfort, too, in Dr. Zelaya’s excellent credentials. He is an internist and Board-certified dermatologist, who after graduating from

Alternate Choice Home Care

Home Health Care

Alternate Choice The aim of the agency, according to its director, Ms. Wein is to provide all necessary care and services while allowing the client the highest degree of independence possible." It is most desirable to keep the sick, elderly person in an environment familiar to him or her. Except in a situation where skilled medical care is necessary, it is best to keep the person in their own home. Older people tend to become confused when confronted with new routines or with unfamiliar surroundings. For this reason, the client’s normal routines are maintained. The client will have meals, bathe, dress or go outdoors at his or her convenience. Food preferences are taken into consideration. Special prescribed diets such as low salt, diabetic, etc. are followed. Workers are trained in

kosher laws. Alternate Choice provides all levels of care to clients, be they seriously ill, just need some help with the activities of daily living, or desire companionship or housekeeping services. The worker may also accompany the client to the doctor or on social visits. The appropriate worker is chosen according to the level of care needed, as well as personal compatibility. All workers are fully trained and licensed by New York State. The agency periodically updates employees' training with educational programs containing the latest information pertaining to patient care. Employees are thoroughly screened and have periodical physical examinations including immunizations. All workers are insured and bonded. Each case is supervised by a

A quality assurance committee consisting of a doctor and several nurses and therapists monitors all activities pertaining to the patient’s care. Most care is provided in the home, however, ACHC does have aides who will work in the hospital. Someone from the office calls the patient frequently to insure that the client is satisfied. Patients

Dr. William I. Kestin

Facial Rejuvenation & Ophthalmology

‘If you could really turn back time...’ The cutting edge of facial rejuvenation has little to do with cutting anymore. So says Dr. William I. Kestin, a leader in the field of facial rejuvenation who is continuing to impress patients and fellow clinicians with the non-surgical facelifts he offers at his ever-broadening Sheepshead Bay practice. Thanks to new techniques and innovative products like Botox®, Perlane®, Restylane® and Radiesse®, one can almost turn back the clock without having to undergo a surgeon’s blade, said Dr. Kestin. The board certified ophthalmologist has not only skillfully performed facial rejuvenation on scores of happy patients, but is also so well

versed in the field that he is teaching top doctors around the country some of the latest advanced techniques. His appreciative students have dubbed him the “Wizard of Eyes” for his ability to rejuvenate his patients’ tear troughs, or the dark circles that can form under the eyes as one gets older. His patients, of course, say something else when they see his work. “They say ‘Wow,’ ‘Oh my God,’” he explains. “I have patients who look in the mirror and tell me that they thought they’d never see this face again.” “The idea is to camouflage one’s age and not have it look like you had work done,” he said. “It’s your face, and you would want it to look as nat-

It is the first implant that can focus for near and far, usually eliminating the need for any glasses or contacts. Besides being Board Certified in Ophthalmology, Dr. Kestin is a Fellow of the American College of

General Dentistry

Helping you turn the world on with your smile Looking for a dentist who covers “every aspect of general dentistry?” Look no further. Dr. Yekaterina Levin of Levin Dental is the dentist who handles fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, root canals, bleaching, veneers, and invisible braces. She welcomes children and adults into her practice. If you’re one of the many people who are not happy with your smile, it’s time to do something about it. Fortunately, today’s dental work can provide what Mother Nature may have overlooked. For example, veneers can be placed over existing teeth, allowing them to look “natural.” The first step, of course, is a discussion with the doctor who will carefully explain the 28

steps involved. X-rays and impressions of your mouth and teeth will be taken. The veneer will be matched to reflect the color of your own teeth, so that once it’s placed inside your mouth, it will look like it belongs there. Another way to brighten your smile is with “invisible” braces. While they were once worn only by adolescents, today, people of all ages are wearing braces, especially the invisible ones. In fact, some studies indicate that more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment than ever before. It’s no doubt because braces are no longer associated with “steel” over the teeth. Instead, the new invisible braces allow you to smile with confi-

dence while you undergo treatment. When treatment is finished, it will be a new you, with a natural, beautiful smile, says the doctor. Ask the doctor to provide you with the details of this innovative treatment. Dr. Levin was a practicing dentist in Russia before coming to the United States about six years ago, she says. She worked as a dental assist, and attended the New York University College of Dentistry. She graduated in 2006, and worked for another dentist for a while. Then, just this past February, she opened her own practice in Bensonhurst. Here, in the high-tech office, she performs root canals, using computer technology to assist with the endeavor, she says.

Dr. Dexter Anthony McKenzie

Internal Medicine

Let ‘The People’s Doctor’ care for you Dr. Dexter Anthony McKenzie, MD — known throughout Brooklyn as “The People’s Doctor” — has been a true community servant for close to twenty-five years. He was born in Olympic Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica amid manifest economic and social challenges. Upon becoming a teenager, he immigrated to Central Brooklyn in the early 1970’s to join his family, some of whom had been evangelists in the southern United States during segregation. There was much to overcome in Brownsville, Brooklyn during those times. Resources were scarce and the larger social policy of neglect was evident in the

abandoned tenements and slouched figures that sipped from brown paper bags or nodded under the influence of heroin and methadone. This was the unhappy backdrop against which a young man, day after day, plodded through the snow to the public school building—the same public school where a guidance counselor tried to convince him that he had a learning disability and should forego thoughts of an academic path and opt for vocational training. Were it not for the teachings of his family: a work ethic, self-respect, self-discipline and hope that sprang from a belief in the power and love of God this young man could have easily gotten caught in the well-

school he returned to Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn for training in internal medicine and pediatrics. Immediately after training, despite lucrative job offers from all over the country, he went to work in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The decision was natural because, through his love for humanity and antipathy to human suffering, he had already developed a deep-seated and abiding commitment to service to the underserved.

Dr. Dexter Anthony McKenzie

disguised and baited snares that dotted his path. But, fate would have it that the young man would graduate and earned degrees in chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences and medicine (Meharry Medical College) all with honors. But, Dr. McKenzie never forgot his roots, his community, his source of strength and motivation. After completion of medical

“There is no set recipe for every person. One patient is completely different than the next, and each receives special care.” The facility is fully equipped with bikes, treadmills, and weights, and other various pieces of equipment. In addition, the physical therapists may recommend electric stimulation, ultrasound, and traction, depending on the situation. The right course of treatment will “help patients take back control of their lives,” says Craig. “The benefits of physical therapy are immeasurable,” he says. “Especially for those born in the baby boomer era. You can add years to people’s lives.” Like everything else that’s worthwhile, the right physical therapy can take time. Change does not always happen instantly. Depending on your individual situation, it may “involve several treatments,” says Craig.

Natural Cosmetics and Herbs

Time-honored remedies for today’s health-concious lifestyles The demand for “natural” and organic products that promote wellbeing is on the rise. Touch of Nature is the brand new Brooklyn shop that carries natural, organic, and botanical products to help the educated consumer stay healthy and well. The two owners, Aleks Shkolnik and Simon Freytor, spent an entire year researching 500-600 different companies and their products, looking for the very best merchandise, the kind “that would help people,” says Aleks. They researched what type of ingredients were used in their products, where they grow, and how they grow. After much careful considera-

tion, they selected 30-35 companies with which to do business, he says. These companies include Vagheggi cosmetics, New Chapter herbal products, Triple Leaf Teas, Dr. Hauschka skin line, Peter Gillham vitamin supplements, and Rene Furterer hair care products, just to name a few. Aleks studied at the Global College of Natural Medicine in California, he says, where he learned that, “people can get relief and help through natural products; products not designed by a chemist.” These types of remedies have been around for thousands of years, but “the medical system does not accept the natu-

ral ways of healing provided through ancient methods,” he says. As a result, “there is a lack of information” about the benefits of these types of products. “When traditional medicine increased widely, the power of natural remedies was denied,” he says. But herbs have been around since “ancient times,” and were used to heal many ailments. “We don’t have enough media support to let people know about natural ways of healing.”
