From the Collection of Marian A. Sinton. This is the largest gold coin Mary struck prior to her marriage to Francis, Dauphin and later King of France. 1555 is the only date usually available to collectors.

From the Collection of Marian A. Sinton. I G probably stands for lacobus Gubernator. James, Earl of Arran, was governor of the kingdom and regent as Mary was only eleven years old when this coin zvas struck. The cinquefoil was his emblem.

From the Collection of Marian A. Sinton. Ex Classical Numismatic Auctions (21 September 1988), lot 932. According to French custom, Mary became of age at the beginning of her twelfth year, 7 December 1553. She was then entitled to make her own decisions, one of which was to ratify the marriage contract (made in 1548) of herself to the Dauphin of France. The marriage itself did not take place until April, 1558.

Burns 13, fig. 908; Seaby 5426. Toned, good VF, flan flaws, slightly double-struck. ($500)

Includes a ticket saying "This coin was found during repairs to an old house in Kirkudbright and presented to my father by E.A. Hornel the artist. The finest known. See Proc. S oc. Ant. Scot. Vol. XLVI P. 352". The dies for this issue were made by James Achesoun, Master Moneyer, at the Paris mint, and later brought to Edinburgh for striking. This type is particularly difficult to find in high grade due to the low relief of the design.
