AUCTION TERMS

1. This is an internet auction conducted by Classical Numismatic Group, LLC (CNG) Bidding in the auction constitutes acceptance of the CNG web site Terms of Use, of which these Auctions Terms are a part.

2. The property in this auction is offered for sale by CNG for itself and as agent for other consignors. We reserve the right to prohibit any bidder from participating in the auction, to reject any bid, to determine the opening price, to set bidding increments, to withdraw any lot, to bid on behalf of CNG, and to permit the consignor to bid on his own lots.

3. A 22.5% Buyer’s fee will be added to the hammer price.

4. All coins are guaranteed genuine. Attribution, date, condition, and other descriptions are the opinion of the cataloguer, and no warranty is expressed or implied. Please note that an auction sale is not an approval sale. Lots examined prior to the sale and lots purchased by floor bidders (including bidders executing commission bids on behalf of other parties) may not be returned for any reason except lack of authenticity. All claims of misdescription and all claims of return, except claims regarding authenticity, must be made within 5 days of receipt of material. No refund will be provided due to grade or “adjectival” comments by a third party grading service if a coin is submitted for grading after the sale. Any claim of lack of authenticity must be made in writing by the original purchaser immediately after discovery that an item is not authentic, and upon making such a claim the original purchaser must immediately return the lot to CNG in the same condition as at the time of the auction. Any coin returned as “not authentic” which CNG feels is genuine will be submitted to the International Association of Professional Numismatists Authentication Bureau (IBSCC) for final decision of authenticity. No refund shall be made on such coins until the IBSCC makes their determination. This includes coins that have been submitted to a third-party grading service after the auction. Coins that have been previously encapsulated (“slabbed”) by a grading and/or authentication service may not be returned for any reason, including authenticity, if they have been removed from the encapsulation (“slab”). If payment is made by credit card, rights of return are governed by these Auction Terms which supersede any rights of return promulgated by the card issuer. Estimates are intended as a guide only and not as a statement of opinion of value.

5. Invoices are due and payable immediately upon receipt. Interest and late fees of 2.0% per month, or at a highest rate permitted by law, whichever is less, from the date of the auction, shall be payable on invoices not settled within 30 days of the auction date. Payment may be made by check or bank wire. Credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) will be accepted; credit card payments will not be accepted more than 14 days after the sale date. Credit card (Visa or MasterCard) invoices will be executed in U.S. dollars only. Payment by credit card will be charged a 2.5% handling fee. Payment by check

must be made in either US dollars ($) drawn on a US bank or British sterling (£) drawn on a British bank. All successful bidders outside North America and the United Kingdom will be charged an additional $20 fee for bank charges that are the result of international wire transfer fees; this fee will be deducted for credit card or check payment as described above. CNG may reduce or compromise any charge or fee at its discretion.

6. Bidding is only open to those who have registered on the Site for the electronic auction, and have been authorized to bid by CNG staff. Bidding is permitted only to parties who can lawfully form contracts and lawfully participate in the auction under applicable laws. Title does not pass until lots are paid in full. Upon receipt of lots, the buyer assumes full responsibility for loss or damage. Delivery to the buyer’s address of record constitutes receipt by the buyer regardless of the identity of the person accepting delivery.

7. Estimates and bids are in US dollars ($US), and bids must be in even dollar ($) amounts. CNG places an estimate and an opening price on each lot. Estimates are intended as a guide only and not as a statement of opinion of value. Ordinarily the opening price is 60% of the estimate. CNG’s electronic auction site software will execute bids on behalf of all bidders up to their maximum limit. Subject to the opening prices, bids will be executed at one bidding increment over the next highest bid. In the case of identical bids, the earliest bid wins. Once a bid is placed it may only be cancelled by CNG staff. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding.

8. Sales tax, postage, handling and insurance are the responsibility of the buyer and are added to all invoices where appropriate. For buyers in the United Kingdom, CNG may import lots into the United Kingdom prior to shipment and charge buyers the import Value Added Tax. On any tax not paid by the purchaser which should have been paid, even if not invoiced by CNG, the purchaser agrees to pay the same on demand together with any interest or penalty that may be assessed. It is the responsibility of the buyer to comply with foreign customs and other regulations.

A note from the consignor.

I started collecting English coins in the mid 1990s primarily because I developed an interest in English history, with a special affection for the Tudors. Initially I began collecting coins beginning with Henry VII thru Charles II but with time I expanded my collection to include coins thru George III. However, my passion was really with the hammered coins, and specifically those of the Tudors and thus over time, I parted ways with my James I and Charles I hammered, as well as my milled collection, with the exception of my Commonwealth coins. On this journey, I had the very good fortune to meet wonderful people and numismatists, who advised me and helped me form the collection you see today, including but not limited to May Sinclair, Patrick and Linda Finn, Mark Rasmussen, Andy Singer, Joe Linzalone, Allan and Marnie Davison, Steve Hill, Victor England, Richard August, David Guest, Steve Damron and Irving Schneider. May was my agent in the Shuttlewood sale and I recall so vividly calling her from my office in Connecticut at 11:30, excusing myself from seeing a patient for a few minutes. I needed to know if I won the unique Henry VII Testoon. She said that the Testoon went for more than I had authorized her to bid on it…and then there was silence for a few seconds at which point she said “but I bought it for you anyway Jim, you just had to have this piece in your collection” and I was so grateful to her for using great judgment, as this coin is one of my most favorite coins in my collection.…quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.

As I also collect pre-federal and federal coins, I have always followed the principal in all my collections that quality far surpasses quantity. As you read thru this wonderful catalogue, so well written by Bill Dalzell, you will notice that the number of coins I have is not great, but I tried to collect the best quality coins I could find for the issue and that I could afford. Quality to me is original unmolested coins, with a wonderful strike for the issue and most importantly great surfaces and great ”skin”, not always an easy task when collecting Tudor coinage. I decided relatively recently to add a nice selection of coins from Edward IV because he was truly the “father” of the Tudor dynasty, when his daughter, Elizabeth of York, married Henry VII, essentially ending the War of the Roses and uniting the houses of York and Lancaster, giving us the Tudor Rose. A word about the Commonwealth coins in my collection. This is truly a wonderful grouping of coins. I was drawn to these coins, not only for their meaning, but also because of their iconography. One of the coins I obtained in this set was the crown, a magnificent coin I secured privately from the estate of Roger Shuttlewood with the assistance of May Sinclair. The commonwealth sixpence, which I obtained from Allan and Marie Davisson, is just a wonderful coin and possibly one of the finest known. You will notice a modest collection of pennies from Aethelred II thru Charles II hammered, a grouping of coins that Joe Linzalone got me started on as only Joe could do.

Like all collectors, parting with their coins is a bitter sweet time. But one must realize that we are only the temporary custodians of these little priceless pieces of history. When looking at my coins, I would often wonder whose hands these coins passed thru and why they were saved. Were they important in the lives of those they touched and I would frequently pondered if the coins I owned from the great collections of Locket, Norweb, Lingford, R. Carlyon-Britton, Shuttlewood, Hughes, and more, were looked at by these collectors in the same loving way that I looked at them.

The majority of pennies struck at York for Richard III bear the T and key - for Archbishop Thomas Rotherham - by the king’s face and with a mint mark of either the boar’s head (SCBC 2166) or, less frequently, a rose (SCBC 2167). Only one other example of the type offered here without T and key by neck and with mint mark sun and rose 2 (SCBC 2168) has appeared at auction in the past 25 years.

The enclosed imperial crown first encountered on the type IIa Groats projected a new understanding of kingship that was also abundantly evident in the contemporaneous first gold Sovereigns for Henry VII. This particular Groat with cinquefoil mark on obverse and no mark on reverse is a very rare variety. Potter and Winstanley knew of only two: the example in the Ashmolean and the piece offered here.

The Belgian town of Tournai (Doornik) was captured by English forces under the young king Henry VIII after a brief siege from 10-23 September 1513. Henry was campaigning in the Low Countries with Emperor Maximilian I in what is today known as the War of the League of Cambrai, one of many theaters in the series of conflicts between the Austrian Hapsburgs and the French Valois. English forces would hold the city until it was returned to the French in the Treaty of London in 1518.

A limited series of English-style silver groats would be struck in Tournai during the city’s brief period of Tudor control. Marked with a crowned τ initial mark, the dies for this short-lived coinage would later be repunched with the portcullis mark and pressed into service in London. The issue is today very rare, so much so that R. Carlyon-Britton considered these to be patterns. In addition to English-style groats and halfgroats, two types of French-style gros are known, both extremely rare (Vanhoudt G417-8).

The reasoning behind the choice of the Catherine Wheel as mint mark for his coinage at Canterbury at this time remains unexplained. The Bristol mint opened in April 1546 under the control of the notorious William Sharrington. This handsome Testoon was struck in the brief period between the mint prior to Henry VIII’s death the following year. The dies were produced locally by Thomas Evenett. By this point the silver in the coinage had been reduced to a mere four ounces meaning that two third of the alloy used was base metal. Consequently most Bristol Testoons are encountered in a poor state of preservation with very little if any of the original surface remaining.
