The arch marks Roman campaigns against Parthian forces in Mesopotamia and Armenia. Although not particularly sucessful militarily, with the Roman general Paetus losing almost his entire army at Randeia in Armenia, the war did result in a favorable peace treaty that was upheld by both sides for nearly fifty years. The arch itself has not survived, and the only evidence for its appearance is this coin.

The tightly drawn features of Vespasian do not resemble the more typical fleshy portraits of the mint at Rome. The portrait does refleet the style of the provincial mint at Tarraco in Spain, which struck this type as an aureus (BMCRE 354); this piece could be an unlisted denarius of that mint.
