Enigmatic Kyzikene EL Stater

Diademed head of Nikomedes right / Zeus standing left, holding wreath in right hand, sceptre in left; eagle on thunderbolt, monogram and date to left. De Callatay pg. 59 (unlisted dies); SNG von Aulock 6897. Good VF. ($600) EL 639. Kyzikos. Circa 460-400 BC. EL Stater (16.08 gm). N u d e male kneeling right, holding thin shaft to his mouth, short rod with fillets or wrist strap in his left; tunny below / Quadripartite incuse punch. Cf. Von Fritze 115; Greenwell 96. VF. ($8000) Von Fritze suggests the object held to the mouth is a trumpet and the object held in the left hand a sword in scabbard. The figure on this coin is not helmeted, as is the Von Fritze specimen, so a military interpretation of the objects held is not required. The head is off the flan on the Greenwell specimen.

Diademed head of Nikomedes right / Zeus standing left, holding wreath in right hand, sceptre in left; eagle on thunderbolt, monogram and date to left. 635. MYSIA, Adramytion. Circa 4th Century BC. /E 9mm (1.12 gm). Laureate head of Zeus right / Forepart of Pegasos right; grain ear below. Cf. Weber 4950 / / Ionia, Kolophon. Circa 460 BC. AR Tetartemorion (0.18 gm). Facing head of Apollo / TE monogram. SNG Copenhagen 133. The first EF, black patina, rare; the second near VF, porous. Two (2) coins in lot. ($200)

641. Kyzikos. Circa 370 BC. EL Stater (15.97 gm). Sphinx left, with straight wing; c / m : ÎŁ in incuse square / Quadripartite incuse punch.
