Facing bust of nimbate Christ, crescents in the arms of nimbus, wearing pallium and colobium, holding the Gospels in both hands. / +IhSUS XRISTUS bASILEU IASILE in four lines; arabesques above and below. DOC III pt. 2, A2.45.5; SB 1818. Good VF, chocolate patina. ($150)

Bust of Christ with nimbus cruciger, wearing pallium and colobium, holding jewelled gospels / +IhsuS XRISTuS b ASILEu bASILE in four lines; leaf couplet below. SB 1813 / / Andronicus II and Michael IX. 1295-1320. JE Assarion (1.31 gm). Andronicus at left, Michael at right, each clad in loros, holding labarum between them / Nimbate and draped bust of Christ within tight circle. DOC V 681-2; LPC 37; SB 2436. The first good VF, dark green to black patina; the second VF, green patina, surface problems. Two (2) coins in lot. ($200)

1874. Anonymous coinage attributed to Romanus III. 10281034. JE Follis (7.46 gm). Class B. Nimbate bust of Christ facing, squares in a r m s of nimbus, wearing pallium and colobium, holding Gospels / Large cross potent with pellets at terminals. SB 1823. EF, black on brown patina, slight pitting, reverse double-struck. Unusual style. ($200)

1871. BYZANTINE. 11th century. JE 18mm Tessera (1.44 gm). Nimbate facing bust of Christ in glory / Legend in four lines. Fair, dark green-black patina. Unpublished. See Spink Auction 127 (7 October 1998), lot 107 for a similar tessera. ($200) These tokens were distributed for charitable purposes to the poor, normally entitling the recipient to food.
