This unusual bust variety zvas published by Blackburn and Lyon in their artieie "Regional Die Production in Cnut's Quatrefoil Issue," pp. 234-235 in the Michael Dolley Festschrift Anglo-Saxon Monetary History. As they do not specifically mention the bust orientation, there may be no evidence that it zvas officially intended. The published die differs from the present coin so these may be the zuork of a particular engraver at the Chester die cutting center, zohich supplied dies for the Chester mint.

Commander of the Danish fleet after the death of his father, King Szuein Forkbeard of Denmark, Cnut became King of England, Denmark and eventually Norivay. His long and secure reign put a stop to centuries of Viking raids.

Harold was the illegitimate son of Cnut and JElgifu of Northhampton. He was elected regent due to the absence of the legitimate heir, King Harthacnut of Denmark. In 1037, zollile Harthacnut zoas still occupied with matters in Denmark, he took the throne.

North does not list Aelfmaer as a moneyer at Exeter for Cnut, but does for Aethelred II. Tlwt zuould place this coin very early in Cnut's reign.

Ex P. Spink Collection (April 1994). The mint name on the reverse has been reçut from Norioich to Thetford. A moneyer named Manna worked at both.

Harthacnut adopted Edward, the son of Aethelred Hand Emma of Normandy, and probably made him heir. When Harthacnut died, there zuas no one able to rule all of the 'Anglo-Danish' empire and Edzvard came to power in England. His nickname conies from his piety and devotion to the church.
