By the reign of Alexius the histamenon and the tetarteron Itad fallen in fineness from nearly pure gold to a 30% alloy. In a complete revision of the monetary system, Alexius introduced a gold hyperpyron ("highly refined") of about 20 carats, an electrum trachy to replace the miliaresion, and a copper tetarteron to replace the follis.
