Eloye Mestrelle's experiments with machine struck coinage were short lived, encountering technical problems and resentment from mint workers. Mestrelle was forced out in 1572 and hanged on counterfeiting charges several years later. It would be exactly 100 years after the striking of this coin that machinery would be re-introduced on a permanent basis. j.
