THESSALY 56. Larissa. Circa 340-321 BC. Didrachm. (12.17 gms.). Threequarter facing head of the nymph Larissa, wearing necklace, hair bound in ampyx and cascading loosely about her face. Bridled horse with head held high, trotting right; around, ΛΑΡΙ-Σ(ΑΙΩΝ). Jameson 1092 (same dies), Boston MFA 894 (same obv. die). EF, beautiful style. (5000) The obverse design for this coin was directly inspired by the facing head design of Arethusa by the artist Kimon struck on a Syracusan tetradrachm circa 405 BC.
