Local Census Office Hosts its Grand Opening BY: ANTRANETTE PIERRE On Friday night, January 22nd, the U.S. Census hosted its Grand Opening for its Miami Dade North East Local Census Office. Located at 775 Northwest 167th Street, the office serves as the one stop shop for all things census related. In attendance were Miami Gardens’ Mayor Shirley Gibson, Vice Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert, III, Councilwoman Barbara Watson and Aventura Vice Mayor Luz Urbaez Weinberg. Mayor Gibson spoke about the importance of the census to Miami Gardens— as it’s the first population since our incorporation in 2003. Aventura Vice Mayor Weinberg called the census “sexy”, since it translates into the disbursement of power and money. The short ceremony featured a 5 minute video presentation about how the census impacts everyone’s lives— from infancy to the elderly. In fact, roads are built, schools are funded, education programs created, housing and community development programs can increase service, health-care services for the elderly, job training assistance are all by-products from information received by the census.
The fact is that census to critical to servicing our ever-growing population. Here are a few examples: Communitybased organizations use socioeconomic data to create social service programs, community action projects, child-care centers and senior meal programs. Businesses use the numbers to decide where to locate of their facilities, factories, shopping centers, movie theaters, banks and offices -- activities that often lead to new jobs. Many 911 emergency systems are based on maps developed by the last census. Census information helps health providers predict the spread of diseases through communities with children or elderly people. And when floods, tornadoes or earthquakes hit, the census tells rescuers how many people will need their help.
