BY CRISTINA PLANAS Mercantil Commercebank, one of the largest privately held banks in South Florida, was honored recently by the Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF) and Miami Metrozoo for sponsoring the zoo’s Maguary Stork Exhibit. An onsite plaque was unveiled in acknowledgement of the bank’s continuous support. In 2006, Mercantil Commercebank announced a long-term alliance with Miami Metrozoo and the Zoological Society of Florida (ZSF) to rename and upkeep its children’s zoo as the Mercantil Commercebank Children’s Zoo, offering interactive and animal encounters, and assisting with the zoo’s educational programs. The partnership included the construction of a three-dimensional entrance to the children’s zoo, its yearly maintenance, and the sponsorship of one of the zoo’s monorails. The Maguary Stork Exhibit sponsorship this year is an addition that consolidates the bank’s support for this important entertaining and educational venue in the community. The ceremony included speeches by ZSF president and CEO Nestor Rodriguez, who officiated the ceremony, and Ed Holden, Mercantil Commercebank executive vice president and manager, Personal & Commercial Banking. Eric Stephens, Miami Metrozoo director, and Cindy Eisman, vice president of development for the ZSF, also
were present. “Mercantil Commercebank’s continued support of our programs is an incentive for our organization,” Rodriguez said. “Their generous sponsorship of the Maguary Stork Exhibit as well as the children’s zoo has helped to make Miami Metrozoo one of our community’s most valuable resources,” he added. “We are honored to support Miami Metrozoo and the ZSF’s mission to encourage an appreciation for the world’s wildlife,” Holden said. “It is our wish that our joined efforts convey the importance of preserving its wellbeing today and in future generations.” The ZSF is the non-profit support organization of Miami Metrozoo. Founded in 1956, members spearheaded a campaign in the mid ’60s, to include plans for a better zoo. Voters approved the bond issue in 1972, and nine years later Miami Metrozoo opened its gates to the public at its current location. Today, this facility is one of the top 10 zoos in the country.
