BNY Mellon and County Line Chiropractic host NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourning, author of the new book Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph BY BARI AUERBACH Aventura Marketing Council Chairman's Roundtable members recently discovered why Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph is the inspirational title for the new book by Alonzo Mourning, seven-time NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist revered by Miami Heat fans as "the ultimate warrior." Visiting Aventura after a national book tour, the seven-time NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist spoke at a luncheon hosted by BNY Mellon Wealth Management and County Line Chiropractic Centers at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club. Business and community leaders welcomed by AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig were thrilled to meet "Zo" - officially declared the "tallest guest speaker ever in AMC history!" Mourning's amazing resilience enabled him to triumph over a rare kidney disease and return to the NBA after undergoing a transplant in 2003. The Miami Heat and Mourning finally won the elusive NBA Championship in the 2006 NBA finals against the Dallas Mavericks 4 games to 2. Just before the '08 NBA draft and famous "Zo's Summer Groove" fundraiser, another AMC event highlighted the mission of Alonzo Mourning Charities - established to encourage the educational development of youths by creating programs and enrichment centers promoting positive change in low socioeconomic communities. "I grew up as a product of foster care and realize the importance of parental guidance," Mourning said. "It's our responsibility as adults to address the needs of our children. No one would be here without the help of someone else."

Before Mourning shared excerpts from the book chronicling his remarkable life story, Jeffrey Levinson, BNY Mellon senior vice president; and Dr. Robert Hochstein, founder of County Line Chiropractic, spoke about ensuring optimal "health and wealth." Now in 34 countries, BNY Mellon is heralded as a "best-in-class" financial services leader with centuries of experience, over $23 trillion in assets under custody or administration and more than $1.1 trillion under management. "Locally, BNY Mellon has over 16 South Florida banking centers and we've been in Aventura since 1978," Aventura Marketing Council Chairman Mourning with Jeff Levinson, Dr. Robert Hochstein, founder, Levinson said. Future registered nurses to experience "Day in the Life of a Nurse" at Aventura Hospital Each year, the Nursing Consortium of South Florida (the Consortium), a coalition of hospitals, nursing schools, healthcare agencies, and foundations, organizes the "Day in the Life of a Nurse" program for high school students interested in pursuing a career as a registered nurse. The goal of the Consortium is to ensure that students see the important work that nurses do and are inspired to adequately prepare themselves for a career in nursing. Many students who participate in the event are area magnet school students where part of the curriculum focuses on careers in healthcare. Students participating in the one-day program take part in various activities including tours of key hospital departments conducted by

"real nurses." This experience allows students to spend time with the nurse and ask them individual questions about their profession, their challenges, and their nursing stories. Students also typically meet and hear from nurse educators, information systems nurses, nurse researchers, and nurse administrators. In addition to shadowing staff nurses and listening to various presentations, student experiences can include performing simple duties such as taking a person's blood pressure and pulse, listening to their heartbeat through a stethoscope, scrubbing in and dressing out in surgical attire and touring a surgical room where they may handle high tech equipment. Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Lots to be Thankful For’ With Thanksgiving just around the corner, everyone’s thinking about eating turkey and watching football - but what about reflecting upon the plethora of things city residents are thankful for? Here are just some of the assets enticing people from all over the world to make a “pilgrimage” to Aventura… Thanks for Low Taxes: Aventura’s property tax rate is still the lowest in Miami-Dade County – So what will you do with the money you save? Maybe give it right back to the city by paying for tickets, permits, inspections and other fines that help bolster municipal revenues and maintain great services! Thanks for the Best School: Parents and kids love the Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) and now, rumor has it, the curriculum may be customized for the city featuring classes like “Tanning 101”; “Condo Board Meeting Etiquette”; and a class that should be mandatory for such a diverse community: “International Relations.” Thanks for Controlled Development: Residents appreciate the City Commission has approved upscale developments - and

everyone is especially thankful that certain projects proposed were denied. Just the thought of a 90-story condo painted bright red or a heavy metal rock club opening right next door could make you really thankful for whatever neighbors you have now! Thanks for Traffic Safety: The city is stepping up efforts to keep Aventura streets safe – but ever wonder if it would just be easier to make it mandatory for every citizen to ride the city’s shuttle bus? Then there would be a lot less traffic and instead of paying for expensive gas, you could buy an even bigger turkey for Thanksgiving dinner – or better yet – have it gourmet catered! Thanks for All the Fun: Concerts, movie nights, trips, sports programs and special holiday parties are always being planned by the city’s Community Services Department that has inadvertently tapped into the secret to world peace: Events like Founders Day promoting unity with an unbeatable weapon: Free food! Thanks for “13 Years of Excellence”: Most residents agree they enjoy life in the city where luxury reigns supreme. So when you’re stuffed from all the turkey and it’s the fourth quarter, just look outside your window and join in reciting this apropos mantra: Every day is Thanksgiving Day in Aventura!

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Who’s being selfish? Q: I am 51 years old and my boyfriend is 62. We both look younger than our years and he plays racquetball every day, but he does have prostate problems and gets upset about not having spontaneous erections. When he does get one, he feels he must have sex immediately, without regard to my needs, for fear he will lose it. I have tried to talk to him about this, assuring him I can (and I always do) bring the erection back and I always satisfy him either orally or with intercourse after oral stimulation. This is getting to be a real problem and I feel frustrated because he seems to

Page 9

be more focused on his needs. I never liked giving oral sex, but now I like it and do it to him every time because that’s what he wants. However, when it comes time for him to do oral sex on me, he complains that I take too long and it hurts him and that I was inconsiderate and “selfish” because I was taking too long on purpose. I tried to explain to him that I can’t control how long it takes me to have an orgasm but that perhaps he needs to stimulate me in other ways first. It seems like he just wants to get it over with for me so he can be satisfied. What do you suggest I do? A: You’ve been doing the right thing by telling him that he should not be worried as anticipatory anxiety can keep him from having erections. You could try talking to him away from the bedroom, during a drive in the country or on a walk, but in all likelihood you will need to talk to a professional in order to work this you. I’m also assuming he has seen a urologist for his prostate problem. If not, that’s the first thing he should do.

Larry Taylor, Certified Financial Planner discusses antique phonographs and financial planning BY LYNN CARROLL LC. With all these vintage phonographs, telephones and cash registers, your office resembles a museum. Is there a message here?

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE understand the value of a plan. I also review historical performance of the market to give them perspective. I believe this strategy helps them sleep better at night and mute some of the loud headlines of the day.

LT. Perhaps I'm looking back at a simpler past. I like to keep things simple. In a way it might represent Janney Montgomery Scott. We're a 176 year old firm based in Philadelphia, that's older than my antiques.

LC. Do you take into account future inflation for your planning?

LT. Absolutely, but for my retired clientele the future is now and they are living longer. Inflation approaches them from every angle, whether it is rising healthcare costs, condo fee assessments, food and insurance. It is real and it is now. A properly diversified quality fixed income portfolio is necessary. My younger investors have the luxury of a long term investment horizon. We will invest in many asset classes with pre tax dollars and plan for inflation adjusted returns later.

LC. What distinguishes you as a Certified Financial Planner from other financial advisors? LT. Defining the scope of my work and taking a broad based approach to financial advice differentiates me. Most financial advisors typically focus on one area of a person's financial life. My client's comprehensive needs are the focus of our entire relationship. I work with them to determine realistic personal and financial goals, and discuss tolerances for risk and the time frame for achieving results with a long-term plan.

LT. Can we talk about antique phonographs now?

LC. In this challenging environment, how do you help your clients?

Lawrence Taylor is a Certified Financial Planner with Janney Montgomery Scott. Offices are located at 20803 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura. For more information, phone: 305-705-1208.

Alfred Portale of Gotham Steak is a chef and owner of perennial New York City favorite Gotham Bar and Grill and is among the culinary leaders within Fontainebleau. Portale's new restaurant Gotham Steak, which was designed by Jeffery Beers International, is a two-level, 16,000-square-foot restaurant with indoor and al fresco dining. Portale's menu expands beyond modern American steakhouse fare to include fresh seafood, specialty cuts of meat and 500+ wines from around the

world. Design highlights include a brilliant chandelier of handblown glass, an open exposition kitchen and a two-level, glassenclosed wine tower. Scott Conant of Scarpetta and is formerly of L'Impero and Alto, is at the helm of Scarpetta, Fontainebleau's Italian restaurant. Its sister restaurant, located in New York City, recently received a glowing three star review from The New York Times. An Italian expression that means "little shoe" - or the shape bread takes when used to soak up a dish - Scarpetta represents the pure pleasure of savoring a meal down to its very last taste. Conant's seasonally-inspired Italian fare is comprised of farmfresh ingredients and clean, earthy flavors that pay homage to his heritage and time spent in Italy. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND The Past Becomes The Future Noted author David Halberstam’s book “The Reckoning,” published in 1986, should have been required reading for America’s automobile industry, as it accurately predicted the current financial crisis and the proposed auto manufacturing bailout. Halberstam made a case against the selfdestructive practices of the auto industry and warned: “Our prosperity is going down the drain, jobs flowing overseas, foreigners seizing our markets and beating us at our own game with better, less expensive products to meet changing needs.” According to Halberstam, perhaps the most dramatic evidence against the auto industry was the summer of 1985, when free market Maryann Keller, regarded as one of Wall street’s most astute auto industry analysts, testified in favor of limited protectionism for America’s auto manufacturers. She had previously prophesied the rise of the Japanese auto industry and was skeptical of most of Detroit’s managerial skills. She testified that she thought the Japanese were in a strong position and the

American’s so weak, that “there was significant danger of the entire American industry collapsing.” In her opinion, there were two critical elements, namely, the Japanese, when faced with quota limits, produced better automobiles and the benefits bestowed on the Japanese by local politicians on their opening of manufacturing plants in our South enabled the Japanese to produce quality automobiles at a lower cost as compared with the American companies that were already shaky. The limited protection, she said, might give the American industry six or seven years to become competitive. Her testimony was “perhaps the most damning forecast of all.” Wit the significant change in the value of the yen, the Japanese were forced to raise auto prices. Instead of being competitive, GM raised prices while Japanese senior executives took pay cuts. By 1985, the Japanese, by years of extraordinary sacrifice, became new, powerful world financiers. In America, jobs were lost, the industrial core weakened and our auto industry made no real attempt to correct the situation. Japan produced quality cars to meet future needs, while our auto industry concentrated on sport utility vehicles and big pickup trucks, aiming only at the bottom line profit for the following quarter.

Where else would you find business people gathered in an art gallery before 8 a.m. enjoying coffee, art and conversation? You guessed it… Gallery Art! Aventura Marketing Council members recently filled Gallery Art’s 8,000 square-foot showroom in the Promenade Shops where they absorbed an infinite amount of creative inspiration before moving into AMC's SpeedBiz networking program. SpeedBiz is AMC's approach to business networking for professionals on-the-run. Modeled after ever-popular Speed Dating, SpeedBiz provides an ambiance conducive for a quick introduction and exchange of business cards in a one-on-one setting. By the time the program wraps up, members typically meet half of the participants initiating relationships for prospective business leads. "This was my first time participating in an AMC SpeedBiz event,"

said Beth Herdegen, VP / business development officer, Community West Bank. "It gave me the opportunity to meet fellow AMC members that I had not met before and learn about the many services and products available from members that I was not previously aware of." Gallery Art is Aventura's full service art brokerage specializing in contemporary art with an extensive collection of over 20,000 pieces in stock featuring such names as: Peter Max, Roy Lichtenstein, Erte, Botero, Tamayo, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson and a vast collection of Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann. Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again

Two frogs BY PATRICIA C. FRANK “Two frogs fall into a pail of milk. One says, “Oh I’m drowning, I’m drowning, I’m drowning.” And sure enough he fell to the bottom of the pail and drowned. The other frog just kept swimming and swimming and moving around kicking his feet. After a while the milk turned into butter and he climbed out of the pail.” This is a cute little story with a great big message. The moral of the story is obvious. When bad things happen, do not panic and do not give up. Do not allow yourself to think even for one second about a bad outcome. What you believe about a situation determines the end result. For some people it is very easy to keep going. It just comes naturally. A negative thought never enters their head. For others it is very difficult. They have to struggle to keep negative thoughts at bay. Because the struggle itself is so exhausting they have little energy left to cope with the actual situation. You can become more like the frog that survived. You have to believe the words. This is much more difficult but can

be accomplished. There are many thoughts and beliefs that have to change first. This requires a change in your belief system and your philosophy of life. Your philosophy of life is deeply rooted. It begins to develop when you are just a baby. You add to it as you grow and mature but your basic belief system is already there inside of you. Everything that happens to you confirms those beliefs. Anything that happens that does not fit into your belief system is disregarded. That is why it is such a challenge to change your beliefs. To change them you must first, really want to change them. You have to see the benefit of changing them. It has to be worth the effort. Then you must examine them and understand them. After that, you must practice the new beliefs and reinforce them every day, all day. Like everything else that you practice, it becomes easier and easier over time. There is another important message in this story. The frog that survived did not know that the milk would turn into butter. It is not necessary to know how something positive will happen. It is enough to know, believe and feel that it will. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Foreclosures are on the rise nationwide. Florida is # 2, just under Nevada. Boasting…no, no, no… I wish it weren’t so! The mortgage crisis and economic downturn are forcing more homeowners into foreclosure, and many of those with pets must make difficult decisions as their housing situations change. A staunch animal lover like myself finds this to be so sad for the increasing number of homeless, helpless pets. As the proud owner of Bentley, my teacup Yorkshire Terrier and Pinky my orange Tabby cat, I could no sooner leave them behind than a human child. But on the news the other night they featured a Dalmatian dog left behind and abandoned in a house vacated due to foreclosure by his owners. The Dalmatian was a mere skeleton and almost at deaths door. Fortunately this dog was rescued in the knick of time by an aware neighbor, calling for help. Being nurtured back to health he will most likely be adopted. There are many other pets being left behind in vacated homes, where they suffer, or may die from lack of food and water or being abandoned outside. Of course it is a tumultuous time for their owners and many rentals don’t accept pets. But, think of the unconditional love they offered you and make provisions for them. To keep pets safe and if possible, with their owners during this difficult time, the American Humane Association offers the following tips for homeowners and mortgage lenders who are working through the foreclosure process. Tips for homeowners facing foreclosure: -Ask family, friends or co-workers to care for your pet while you relocate to pet-

friendly housing. -Ask your veterinarian or boarding facility for low-cost boarding or a payment plan while you relocate to pet-friendly housing. -If you cannot take your pet with you, Petfinder.com can be a great resource for finding a shelter or organization in your area where you can surrender your animal and which does not euthanize adoptable animals. -Never leave your pet behind in your vacant home or set it loose to “find its own way.” It is inhumane and may violate animal cruelty laws. -Be aware that if you leave your pet behind, when a mortgage lender takes possession of the home, your pet will be taken to the local animal control shelter, where it will be at risk of an uncertain future that may include euthanasia. You could also face possible criminal charges for animal abandonment. Check for pets during monthly delinquency inspections, both inside and outside the home, and if possible ask neighbors if they are aware of any pets in the home. -If pets are suspected to be on the property, the inspector or mortgage lender should call the local animal control agency or animal shelter and ask that an officer come to the home for suspicion of animal abandonment and/or neglect. -In most cases, an animal control officer can request a warrant to enter the home and seize the pets if food, water or shelter is insufficient. If a seizure of the animal occurs within a time period in which the mortgage lender is waiting to legally seize the home and foreclose, the animals will be kept safe. After that time, though their futures are less certain, and they may be euthanized if not adopted. Tips are available at www.americanhumane.org.” Or for information of foreclosures or short sales call Denise Rubin Realty, LLC at 305.932.9326 or visit www.DeniseRubin.com.

Quick ‘fitness fixes’ BY BARI AUERBACH According to Oxygen magazine, even the toughest fitness challenges have quick fix solutions to help salvage training and cleaneating plans‌ Challenge: No time to eat leads to skipping breakfast Quick Fix: Keep some low-fat, low-sugar energy bars or an orange in your purse or in your desk at work – they’re better than no breakfast at all. If you do skip breakfast, opt for a small, healthful snack before lunch consisting of high-fiber, whole grain foods and protein like yogurt with fruit or turkey on whole grain bread. Challenge: Eating junky food at work Quick Fix: If you have a weakness for snacks, instead of indulging in what’s around the office, bring your own portion controlled treats – now available in 100 calories servings in many different varieties by companies like Nabisco. Challenge: You feel guilty about missing workouts Quick Fix: Realize taking an occasional exercise break can be good for you in terms of rest and recovery – but if you’re consistently short on time, try “expedited workoutsâ€?- even just ten minutes of cardio can boost your energy level and mood.
