Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Dear Aventura’ If there was an Aventura advice column, you just might see intriguing questions and informative answers like these: Q: Dear Aventura: I’m moving into a new condo and the realtor said “just bring your toothbrush” – but what else do you think I’ll really need? A: A bike, rollerblades or running shoes for the circle; reusable Whole Foods Market bags; lots of 20% off Bed Bath & Beyond coupons; a computer so you can buy movie tickets online instead of waiting on a long line at the mall; and a map pinpointing traffic cameras so you don’t get fines in your new mailbox! Q: Dear Aventura: How can I make a smart investment in the city? A: Open a beauty salon, shoe store, Mercedes or SUV dealership; offer Mommy & Me classes; startup an exclusive

Starbucks/sushi/organic food delivery service; or turn the old Circuit City into a City Zoo with special exhibits for native species like cougars. Q. Dear Aventura: How long do you have to live in the city before knowing what these acronyms stand for: ACES, ATJC, AMC, DSW, IDEA? A. Long enough to have won the enrollment lottery at the Aventura City of Excellence School; met Israeli dignitaries at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center; joined the Aventura Marketing Council to build business; shopped at Designer Shoe Warehouse countless times; and still have no idea that IDEA based at One Aventura Executive Center stands for International Design, Engineering and Architecture. Q: Dear Aventura: What souvenirs should I get to remember my stay? A: A bagel from Mo’s; an “I Survived Biscayne” t-shirt; a security gate barcode; a Cheesecake Factory beeper; a towel handed to you at Equinox; and the Aventura News so you can see homes for sale when you decide to stay forever!

Ameriprise Financial's Mason Mishcon helps clients finance their dreams BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE

LC: How does your certification as a Certified Financial Planner, or CFP, benefit your clients? MM: Getting a CFP designation requires a financial planner to take courses and pass an examination to show competency in a broad area of topics such as stocks and bonds, taxes, insurance, retirement planning and estate planning. So it gives your clients confidence by establishing your credentials as a financial planner. LC: What else helps Ameriprise Financial stand out from other personal finance firms? MM: One thing that distinguishes us from most companies is that we are first and foremost a financial planning company. While we also do insurance, investments and so on, the financial plans dictate what we do going forward. We do more financial plans per client than any other company out there. Ameriprise is very conservative, so although, like everyone else, we've had some collateral damage from the economic crisis, we've done a fairly good job of navigating through the problematic economy. We had very little exposure to the mortgage mess and scandals like Bernie Madoff and Stanford Financial. In fact, the company recently made some acquisitions. We bought H&R Block Financial Advisors and J&W Seligman. LC: What are some of the basic things a financial planner looks at on behalf of clients?

Aventura Plaza Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center to host Open House, May 14th Aventura Plaza Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center has a whole new look and all are welcome to visit on Thursday, May 14th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. when the Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network celebrates the reopening of this center located at 1800 NE 168th Street. Having just completed a four year renovation, the 1960's Aventura Plaza Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center has been transformed into a stateof-the-art rehabilitation and nursing center for the 21st century. The first floor of the center includes a gorgeous rehabilitation therapy room complete with a balance machine, Gait Trainer, Versatrainer, Omnicycle, NuStep machine and all of the equipment required for physical, occupational and speech therapy. Residents dine on tablecloth covered tables; daily menus reflect dietician select meals that are tailor made to meet all dietary needs. Their dining room is also used as a multi-purpose room in

which social events, concerts, and family celebrations take place. The third and fourth floors are home to over 50 residents. Each room is sunny, cozy and contains residents' memorabilia, personal furnishings and a flat screen television. Michael Alexander, NHA, administrator of Aventura Plaza and his team of professionals will be on hand to welcome all guests. In addition to refreshments and entertainment by Rafael Nodal, tours of the center will be available. For further information or to make reservations, contact Charlita at 305-917-1800 or Maria at 305-917-0400.

MM: I make sure my clients' debts are paid off and they have the right insurances in place to protect them in case of unexpected events. Most people have life and health insurance, and insurance policies on their house and car, but they may not realize that you can also insure your investments. Then I look into accumulating money for whatever goals and dreams they may have. Financial planning is something everyone should be doing regardless of the times, because without a plan you don't have any direction. Knowing they have a plan in place, my clients sleep better at night. It's easier to adjust a plan to changes in the economy than to start from scratch. LC: Your family has always been known for public service. What have you been doing lately on that front? MM: With Elaine Adler of the Aventura Marketing Council, I put together the Executive Suite, which is composed of one person per profession. It's a monthly forum where we can bounce new marketing ideas off each other and any issues that anyone in the group may need advice on. It's been very successful. Ameriprise Financial is located in Aventura Corporate Center, 20801 Biscayne Blvd., Suite 403. For more information call 305-9320016 or visit ameriprisefinancial.com.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Can’t forget first partner Q: I think my first partner ruined sex for me. I went out with this guy for six months and the sex was fantastic. I always had an orgasm and loved going to bed with him. Since we broke up I’ve had three sexual partners and none of them were able to bring me to orgasm. Is sex over for me? A: I think it is very important to let some time pass. What you did was to rush into these other relationships before you were really ready. I don’t know if he broke up with you or vice versa, but I do know from your letter that you still are taking him into bed with you. By your thinking about him and by your comparing the present to what went on when he was around, you are preventing yourself from having good sexual experience with a new man. Not only are you lessening your chances of developing a successful relationship by rushing into the arms of all these men, but you are also increasing the risk that you’ll catch a sexually transmitted disease. So

take a breather for a while, and if you still are having problems forgetting him, then go for a few sessions with a counselor. Q: What can I do about this? I’m disappointed because I get the feeling that my husband touches me only because I like it and because my reactions turn him on. I want him to touch me because he finds my body irresistible. A: If it’s pleasurable for you and it turns him on, don't waste any more time analyzing it. Putting further pressure on the situation isn’t going to add to anyone’s enjoyment. The one thing I can suggest you do is explore his body, looking for erogenous zones. Maybe you’ll even find some that he didn’t know about. Q: Do you think that women still associate love with sex more so than men do or has that changed? A: I do think that in general in our society women still need more emotional reassurance and love rather than just a sexual encounter. But there are women who say that all they want is the sexual encounter, and since they use contraceptives so that they don’t have to worry about pregnancy as in previous years, they prefer not to have any emotional involvement. However, I personally believe that most people, men and women, do want to have the intellectual and emotional companionship of a partner and not just the sexual experience.

When it comes to gourmet toppings nothing tops the selection at Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza ranging from Italian sausage, mushrooms, Calamata olives, prosciutto and long hot finger peppers - to anchovies, onions, pepperoni and sweet peppers…And when it comes to building business - nothing tops the top-of-the-line events planned for Aventura Young Professionals, who recently enjoyed a networking luncheon at Anthony's in the Aventura Plaza on Biscayne and 179th Street. AYP Chair Michael Yavner of Northern Trust helped Anthony's friendly management and staff welcome a great turnout of under45 "top of their game" guests discovering proprietor Anthony Bruno's recipe for pizza success…Reinvent coal fired pizza ovens first used in the early 1900's; preserve the "old world" art of cooking with coal; put a pizza in an 800 degree oven; cook for just four minutes; and char the thin crust to perfection. During the luncheon, teams from Dolphin Stadium, the Florida Marlins, Williams Island POA and Marksman Security commended the over-the-top value of Anthony's large Specialty Pies for under $20 - and choices like Meatball, Sausage, Hot or Sweet Peppers and Ricotta; Meatball and Ricotta; Broccoli Rabe & Sausage; Eggplant Marino; and Frittata (pepper & egg). Calculating "see you at the top" reasons for Anthony's continual expansion, colleagues from Melnick Lilienfeld & Castonguay CPAs, BNY Mellon, JGB Bank, RBC Bank, Ameriprise Financial and Bernstein Global Wealth, figured out at least 2,000 pizzas a day are served at Anthony's in Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Weston, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Plantation, Pembroke Pines, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and Tampa. While business cards were being exchanged by leaders from the Miami Beach Convention Center, Florida's Blood Centers,

Jarett Grushka, Dolphin Stadium; Mason Mishcon, Ameriprise Financial; Howard Fabian, Fabian Realty; Chris Huff, Dolphin Stadium; Bray LaDow, Florida Marlins

Southeast Computer Solutions and Coane & Associates - so were pizza trays as everyone tried Anthony's top pizza picks including Fresh Mozzarella, Sliced Tomato & Basil; White Pizza with ricotta, mozzarella and Romano cheese; Arugula salad served over traditional pizza; and Calzones with mozzarella and ricotta. Publishers from Stern Bloom Media planned on making it a top priority to report Anthony's is famous for serving the best coal oven roasted chicken wings. Attorneys Eric Miller and Mark Lynn along with legal scholars from Bloomgarden, Goudreau & Rosen also gave rave reviews to Anthony's "raising the bar" for coal oven roasted focaccia sandwiches made with Italian tuna salad and top quality roast beef. Hungry for more, AYP members from Fabian Realty, Delta Psychological Group, Mo's Bagels, My Netkey Velocity Printing, Pizza Fusion, Allstate and Corporate Communications created top of the mind awareness for delicious side orders like broccoli rabe and sausage. Colleagues from Goldstein Photography, Taft Forward, Banyan Life Financial, Minuteman Press, Globalinx and Workout Master put Anthony's Italian Salad at the top of their list for "go green" favorites. And creative minds from Schrager & Associates, DS Xpress, Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach, ASAP Staffing, Double Click and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation came up with good excuses for indulging in New York style cheesecake topped off with cappuccinos for dessert! Before the luncheon was over, the consensus was the slogan "Our Pizza Is Well Done!" is certainly apropos for Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza…and everyone had "Job Well Done!" accolades for the Aventura Marketing Council - planning events for the Aventura Young Professionals committee that are always top notch! If only BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Are you guilty of playing the “if only’ game with your life and happiness? Does it dictate and dominate your life without your knowledge or awareness? When you use “if only” you are implying that there is a condition that is in effect and that condition is not fulfilled. It can be used as an excuse or it can be used as an accusation. Take a few moments to finish these sentences. You may have more than one response to each statement. Write them all down separately. “I would be happy if only. I wouldn’t suffer if only. I wouldn’t be angry if only. I wouldn’t be fat if only. I wouldn’t be a failure if only. I would have what I want if only. My life would have been better if only. My life would be perfect if only.” These statements become excuses when you think them or say them about yourself. They are a way of explaining, justifying and rationalizing your behavior past or present. There can be a grain of truth in these statements. There is no doubt that certain situations and conditions have a tremendous impact on your life.

Page 19

IDEAL MEDICAL CENTER These statements become accusations when someone else says them about you or, heaven forbid, to you. “If only you did such and such, I would have been a greater success or I would have been richer or I would have been happier.” At the same time that they are accusations they are also excuses for the person making the statements. The individual is attempting to lessen the blame they feel for not succeeding or making more money or being happier. They are expressing their disappointment with themselves and or with you. It becomes destructive when they use these statements to put you down, restructure the balance of power in the relationship, find fault with you and create guilt. These statements threaten your self-esteem and wellbeing. Try not to use them on yourself and do not allow someone else to use them against you. Accept the fact that your happiness cannot depend on someone else acting in a certain way. That is not the definition of love. “I would not be fat if only you did not bring home sweets and eat them in front of me” may be true but it avoids the real issue and it diminishes your power to succeed and be happy. Free stuff and real deals are available just for the asking

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY

Ly Espinol

I hear about a lot of good deals that are available all over the country and here’s one I wanted to pass along that could mean free supplies for your family. It comes from my CBS TV friends at KTVT in Dallas and it offers a helpful hint about all the free stuff companies will give-away to keep old customers and find new ones. Maggie Grayson has two little ones to clothe and feed, so she’s always on the lookout for new products she can try. She enjoys saving money, too, and says, “It certainly is great to try things out in sample sizes instead of buying a full size.” Consequently, she’s discovered that many companies are willing to give away free samples of baby products as a way to build brand loyalty. Maggie tells us, “Any company that you see online or any of your favorite companies, just go online. Contact their corporate office and say, ‘Hey, I would really like to check out your product.’” Sounds way too easy, but it has worked pretty well for her. She has received free samples of diapers, baby wipes, suntan lotion and household cleaners. She’s guessing it can save families hundreds of dollars a month. Maggie breaks into a big smile as she thinks about all the free

stuff she’s gotten. “We have diapers; we have toiletries, and we have wipes — and all of those products are available.” Tony Palmer is chief marketing officer of Kimberly Clark, which makes Huggies, Kleenex and many other popular brands. Palmer says the company gave away 15 million free samples last year and adds, “Our opportunity is to bring mothers into the Huggies family and let them use those wonderful products and know they really work.” Parents can sign up for free samples and coupons on the Huggies’ website. And that’s not all to which they may be entitled. Most pediatricians also offer free samples for giveaway, including pricier items like formula and medications. It turns out that “Enfamil” will send new parents a free insulated diaper bag filled with $250 in free gifts. And when you register with the company, they’ll send coupons and samples that are appropriate for your child’s age. And here’s another little tip: If you don’t get any help the first time you call or contact the company, try again a little bit later or on a different day. The response you get may depend on whom you talk to. And remember, the nicer you are on the phone, the better chance you may have a company extending a little “customer service” to one of their customers. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday on CBS4 beginning at noon.

You know what happens when you don’t advertise? Nothing. To avoid nothing from happening call 305-669-7355 today.

Do your part to stimulate the economy: Travel! BY DAVID GEDANSKY Travel and tourism is a huge segment of the U.S. economy: according to the U.S. Travel Association (USTA), spending on travel in the U.S. totals $740 billion annually. That’s almost as much as the entire economic stimulus package passed by Congress. “Whether it’s Las Vegas or Orlando, where hundreds of thousands of workers are directly or indirectly employed in travel and tourism, or communities throughout the rest of the country that rely on airlines, hotels, resorts, car rental companies, restaurants, theme parks and other tourist attractions for productive jobs and the taxes they produce, travel serves as a natural economic stimulus to keep America working,” said Roger E. Block, CTC, president of Travel Leaders Associates. Clearly, going ahead with your 2009 travel plans will help to further stimulate a large and essential segment of the U.S. economy. And, if you have some discretionary income to spend on travel, you’ll find that it’s a buyer’s market. With help

from a travel professional, travelers can find substantial price reductions across virtually every segment of the travel industry. “Business and leisure travelers alike can travel with the confidence that they’ll receive increased value for every dollar they spend, as well as pride in knowing they are contributing to the nation’s economic well-being,” said Block. Moving ahead with your travel plans also means you won’t miss out on the benefits of travel. Studies show an actual decline in overall quality of life when people hold off on traveling. Two studies cited by USTA reveal that travelers rate their overall health one full point higher (on a scale of one to five) while on vacation. To firm up your travel plans and ensure that you receive maximum value for your travel dollars, talk with your travel professional at Travel Leaders at 20801 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 306, Aventura or phone 305-9355560 or email david@travelleaders.com or visit us on the web www.travelleaders.com/experts.

Solving ‘Diet Dilemmas’ BY BARI AUERBACH Diet Dilemma 1: Jane and Linda go out for a power lunch. Jane orders a grilled vegetable plate with white rice; Linda orders a grilled chicken sandwich on whole grain bread. Who made the smarter choice? Diet Dilemma 2: At least three times a week, John goes to Starbucks and orders a venti size cafe con leche sweetened with two Equals...how could he still enjoy his favorite drink but make it less caloric and more healthful? Diet Dilemma 3: Ellen decided to go on a crash diet to lose weight. She drastically cut her caloric intake by hardly eating anything all day – so why are the pounds stubbornly staying on? Diet Dilemma 4: Two fit moms pack an after workout snack. Mom #1 chooses a nutritional protein bar, while mom #2 chooses to fill a small bowl with chopped up pieces of chicken mixed with asparagus and brown rice. Which mom’s snack will rev the metabolism more? Diet Dilemma 5: For lunch, Joe goes to Wendy’s and gets a Broccoli & Cheese Baked Potato – while Stacey gets a Taco Bell Taco Supreme – who had more calories? For dinner, Bob goes to Subway for a 6” Cold Cut Combo – while Jackie goes to Carl’s Jr. for a Charbroiled Chicken Club Sandwich – who had more calories? Solving Diet Dilemmas: Solution 1: Linda made the smarter choice since Jane’s grilled vegetables will most likely be sautéed in too much oil and the white rice is a high glycemic carb...Opting for steamed veggies with brown rice would have been a smarter choice. Solution 2: John could order a grande size non-fat cafe con leche; and instead of sweetening it with Equal, he could bring along his own packets of Stevia – the natural non-caloric sweetener available at Whole Foods Market and GNC. Solution 3: Our bodies have a built-in survival mechanism that stores and holds onto

body fat for use in times of food shortage. If you make a habit of skipping meals or eating only a small amount of calories each day, your body thinks that you are experiencing a famine and your metabolism will slow down to conserve energy. To avoid this, don’t skip meals. Regular meal and snack times will help to maintain the optimal metabolism for weight loss. Solution 4: The snack Mom #2 packed will rev her metabolism more...The body has to work harder to breakdown “real food” as opposed to engineered foot like protein bars – so whenever possible, instead of a Balance bar, opt for a balanced meal including a lean protein, low-glycemic carb and vegetables. Solution 5: For lunch, Joe had more calories – the Broccoli & Cheese Baked Potato has 440 calories; the Taco Supreme has 220 calories. For dinner, Jackie had more calories – the Charbroiled Chicken Club Sandwich has 550 calories; the Cold Cut Combo has 410 calories. A few hundred calories here – a few extra fat grams there...It can all add up to putting on a lot more pounds. But if you’re a vigilant eater who watches out for diet culprits that can thwart your progress - you can keep making “better choices” for a better body!

2009 Nissan Versa is America’s lowest-priced car Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS With a suggested retail price of $9,990, Nissan is billing its new 2009 Versa Sedan as the lowest-priced new car on the market in the United States. Nissan debuted the front-wheel drive Versa in the U.S. as a 2006 model and it has been a solid seller with consumers looking for fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance or roominess. It also has one of the highest standard horsepower/torque ratings and the largest interior in the entry-level segment, along with good quality, reliability and durability. Versa is built at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico, assembly plant (where the Sentra is made) and is available in three models in five-door Hatchback or four-door Sedan configurations: 1.8 S with four-speed automatic and 1.8 SL with Xtronic CVT.

All 2009 Versas feature a standard 122 hp, 16-valve, 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine and a choice of three transmissions — Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), four-speed electronically controlled automatic with overdrive or the standard six-speed manual gearbox. The automatic tranny combination delivers a pleasantly responsive performance, as well as 26 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway. You’ll get 27/33 mpg with the CVT transmission; 24/32 mpg with the four-speed automatic transmission; and 26/31 mpg with the sixspeed manual transmission. The Xtronic CVT, unlike conventional stepped gear automatics, operates as essentially “one gear” through use of a belt and two pulleys. By varying the working diameters of the two pulleys, the transmission eliminates the “steps” between gears, resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation by keeping the engine in its optimum power range under a variety of driving and load conditions. Both the Hatchback and Sedan ride on a 102.4-inch wheelbase and have short front and rear overhangs, dynamic styling with crisp body forms and long rooflines, large

halogen headlights, a signature Nissan grille and large taillights. Body-color front and rear bumpers and dual remote-controlled outside mirrors accent the exterior. A Sport Package (optional on the Versa Hatchback SL model) adds performance styling with a roof-mounted rear spoiler, lower body side sill extensions, unique front and rear fascia, and fog lights. On the inside, there’s a spacious cabin and a clean, simple, high-quality interior design that allows for comfort for all passengers. A wide, laterally oriented instrument panel emphasizes the car’s width, while the low center console flows freely toward the

rear. Both Sedan and Hatchback integrate convenient storage areas, including the center console, glove box, front doors and an in-dash CD storage compartment. Versa also comes with a laundry list of standard and available equipment, including Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio and Clarion speakers with a Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer.

Did you know that approximately 6 million American women are pregnant each year? Of these pregnancies, approximately 4 million result in live births. Studies show that healthy mothers who receive good prenatal care are more likely to give birth to healthy babies. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is important to understand what you can do to increase your chances of having a healthy baby. Prenatal care refers to the medical care that women receive before and during their pregnancies. Prenatal care is more than just regular health care, it also includes education and counseling on good nutrition, physical activity, the birthing process and skills for caring for a newborn. Fathers and family members have an important role to play in these aspects of prenatal care. Prenatal care means that your doctor or healthcare provider can monitor for and identify any potential problems early on in pregnancy. Early treatments can prevent and cure problems during the pregnancy and at birth. It is important to know that babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight and five times more likely to die, compared to babies born to mothers who did receive prenatal care. A healthy pregnancy actually begins at least three months before a woman becomes pregnant. It is recommended that women of childbearing age get at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. This amount of folic acid can be found in fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid can also be taken in pill form as part of a prenatal vitamin supplement. Women should also consume a variety of folates, a water soluble B vitamin. Foods rich in folates include lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, orange juice (concentrate is best) and broccoli. Women considering pregnancy should also make sure they are properly vaccinated for diseases that could cause harm to a developing baby such as chicken pox or rubella. It is important that women get these vaccinations before becoming pregnant.

JACKSON HEALTH BEAT Maintaining a healthy weight and nutritious diet is also essential to a mother and baby during pregnancy. Make sure you are engaged in regular physical activity and try to do some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Ask your healthcare provider what kinds of exercise is safe for you to do as your pregnancy progresses. Do not smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or use any kind of drugs, legal or illegal, that are not prescribed to you. Be sure to ask your doctor about taking any medication because certain ones can be harmful to the fetus. This includes herbal and “natural” products, too, because they can also cause side effects. Avoid hot tubs, saunas and x-rays while you are pregnant, and do not eat uncooked or undercooked meats or fish. Avoid or control caffeine in your diet; pregnant women should have no more than two servings of caffeine per day. Teas, sodas and chocolate often contain caffeine and count toward your daily caffeine limit. In addition, stay away from chemicals like insecticides, solvents, lead and mercury. For more information on prenatal care, visit online at <www.jhsmiami.org/body.cfm?id=157> or <www.4women.gov/FAQ/prenatal.htm>. To learn more about our special prenatal care programs, call Jackson South Community Hospital at 305-251-2500. You can also take comfort in knowing that the Jackson Health System is experienced in managing complicated pregnancies at its High-Risk Obstetric Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital, 305-5856480, as well as having one of the best neonatology units in the nation at the Holtz Children’s Hospital, 305-5855437.
