Wachovia Securities, A Wells Fargo Company, 'salutes heroes' with U.S. Department of Defense Employer Support of Guard and Reserve BY BARI AUERBACH Hundreds of Aventura Marketing Council members recently learned how employers can help support brave men and women serving in the National Guard and Armed Forces Reserve at a breakfast meeting hosted by Wachovia Securities, A Wells Fargo Company. The patriotic summit highlighted the mission of the United States Department of Defense Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and honored heroes putting their personal lives on hold to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig, a former U.S. Army Reserve Captain, welcomed business and community leaders gathered at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino's elegant Sport of Kings Room, where musical entertainment was provided by the Brass Quintet of the 13th U.S. Army Band sponsored by Major General Douglas Burnett, the Adjutant General of Florida. Following the presentation of colors by Sgt. Major Mario Alvarez and the Southern Command Color Guard and the National Anthem sung by Gary Cyr, ESGR National Committee Project Coordinator, everyone joined in saluting members of the military and special guests including: Major Gen. Burnett; COL (Ret.) Phillip Speake, ESGR State Chair; Peter Caspari, ESGR Florida Committee Vice Chair; and Miami-Dade Commissioner Pepe Diaz, Chair of the Military Coalition of MiamiDade. "We thank the men and women of this country who serve," Diaz said. "Without you we don't have freedom - and without freedom we don't have this country." Appreciation was also expressed to philanthropic employers such as Wachovia, for enabling members of the Guard and Reserve to concentrate fully on their military responsibilities. Gen. Burnett and Col. Speake explained, "ESGR serves as an ambassador, bridging the gap between employers and reservists who want to know their jobs will be there when they get back and that their families are secure. In a democracy and freedom-loving nation, we have to count on the citizens of our community to

answer the call of serving." Leaders including Wachovia Bank president Shelley Freeman of the Florida Division; Wachovia Securities regional president Tony Saponaro; managing director supervising Miami-Dade County Robert Schwartz and managing director of investments Michael A. Shear of the Shear Golden Investment Group of Wachovia Securities; spoke about their shared commitment to supporting Major General Douglas Burnett, The Adjutant General of Peter Caspari, Vice Chair Employer Outreach Florida Command; members of the military ESGR's Florida; Robert S. Dear Aventura News: On March 18th 2009 it happened. I woke up with excruciating chest pains thinking of course that I was experiencing a heart attack. I was rushed to the Aventura Hospital Emergency Room. Once in the room, I was attended by nurses, aides and doctors. I provided them with my vital information to put into their computerized system and they began to immediately assess and address my medical situation. The quality of the care and kindness in the ER was extraordinary. Eventually, I was sent up to a private room in the North Wing of the 7th Floor. The room was spacious, immaculate and quite beautiful-it looked just like a nice hotel room. While at the hospital I must have interacted with at least 30 or so hospital personnel. Everyone asked me the same thing, "Is there anything else we can do for you or anything else you want?" I was also very impressed when I received a visit from the hospital's CEO, Heather Rohan-who visited me to see how everything was going and if there was anything else I needed. After all the testing was completed, the doctors and staff quickly diagnosed and addressed my problem and made me comfortable and I began to feel better. After three days, my doctors informed me that I could be discharged and since I had received such great care, kindness and attention at the Aventura Hospital, I almost did not want to leave-now... To almost not want to leave a hospital surely says a lot about the hospital. People tend to complain when they don't get the treatment they think they deserve. People often times complain when they don't get the treatment they want and sometimes that is warranted. But far too often, we forget to say thank you for the extraordinary talents of some seemingly ordinary people who are just "doing their jobs." But the truth is, the staff at the Aventura Hospital is comprised of extraordinary people whose job descriptions must not only include: competence and experience but must also be defined by taking care of people with dignity, professionalism, kindness, patience, compassion, and warmth. Living in Aventura, my family and I feel fortunate to have such a wonderful hospital serving our community.

Phyllis Apple, 86, PR icon, retires The Apple Organization closes its doors after 30 years Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the sky just might be falling. Phyllis Apple, the founder and CEO of The Apple Organization, is retiring after 30 years in the business. "I turn 87 years old this year," says the blond-haired vivacious publicist who is best known for representing major real estate developers throughout South Florida and beyond, "I want to relax, walk Candy (her Maltese and constant companion), play golf and needle-point." Before you lose all faith in the future of PR without Ms. Apple, rest assured that, as the saying goes, the Apple does not fall far from the tree. Ms. Apple's daughter has started a new company, Susan Apple Public Relations, Inc. based in Charlotte, North Carolina, but much of the staff will remain in Miami to service the existing clients. The younger Ms. Apple has spent the better part of the last year working with clients in the equine world, where she is quite at home as a competitor and owner of two horses. Over the past couple of years, The Apple Organization has expanded its horizons by assisting their clients with designing websites among other endeavors. The new Susan Apple Public Relations, Inc. will contin-

ue down this path, but will not forget its roots in traditional print media. Susan comments, "My mother leaves a major legacy. Whether I drive along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, Brickell or through any South Florida community, my mother points to building after building, 'I promoted that one and that one.' She has been an amazing force in real estate development." This past year, the company was voted The Best PR Company in the Americas by a joint collaboration of CNBC and The New York Times. "This marks the end of an extraordinary career - there is no one like Phyllis Apple, and she will be greatly missed," says long time client, Craig Studnicky, president of International Sales Group, a leading real estate sales and marketing firm headquartered in Aventura. Craig adds, "Fortunately, Susan has inherited her mother's integrity, dedication, energy and creativity." Instead of seeing Candy asleep on Phyllis' large gray desk behind the Granny Smith apple green door of her office suites, you are likely to see them both in a golf cart at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort on the front nine. Double Click Companies lends, builds, manages and sells BY LYNN CARROLL Whether it's lending, building, brokerage or management, Double Click Companies can respond to all your real estate needs, says managing partner Erik Levin. The firm, located at 21355 E. Dixie Highway, Suite 107, has four divisions -- Double Click Lenders, Double Click Construction, Double Click Realty and Double Click Management. "We do a full array of financing for everything from construction projects to buying a house, here and abroad," Levin says. "We're also ready to work with developers seeking financing for projects overseas." Need financing? While the market is still tight, Levin says, "those who can carry mortgages are getting them. We're definitely not doing the volume we did two years ago, but we're active. Since we know where to go and have the connections, there are banks ready to underwrite deals that make sense." Double Click Construction, meanwhile, has slowed down with the economy but hardly stopped, Levin says. "We're mainly general contractors for residential and commercial developers," he says. "We just broke ground on a $17 million, 80,000-square-foot retail center, as well as some smaller jobs." Double Click Realty has played a major role in

South Florida real estate for the past several years, says Levin, who is on the board of directors of the AventuraSunny Isles Beach Chamber of Commerce. "Everybody thinks the real estate market is dead, but deals are happening. We're doing real estate transactions of all sorts. In fact, we've experienced a big upswing over the past couple of months. Consumer confidence is starting to come back as people realize we've hit the bottom of the market." If you're looking for someone to manage an investment property, Double Click Management will oversee everything from rent collections to evictions. "We manage a large portfolio of properties," Levin says. The firm also has a growing specialization in condo association management and is licensed to sell HUD homes. The Bnai Zion Foundation supports Israel Society BY EILEEN GLASTEIN The best kept philanthropic secret in South Florida is Bnai Zion. That’s the way I begin the conversation. A long-time member of the Aventura Marketing Council networking is what it takes to get out the word about your organization. The cause is great and person by person we will accomplish our goals of raising money for the Bnai Zion hospital in Haifa, the home-front hospital caring for the population of northern Israel, and supporting our other projects; Ahava Children’s & Youth Center, Quittman Center/Maon Bnai Zion Homes for Special Children, David Yellin College of Education and The Library of Peace at Ma’aleh Adumim. All of our projects are important assets that contribute to the wellbeing of Israeli society. In these times everyone needs money. Bnai Zion can offer a high interest rate on an annuity with a charitable tax deduction. When you no longer live on the payments, Bnai Zion benefits from the remainder which will support our projects of helping children, the sick and the mentally challenged to mention a few.

My friend Harold and his wife, Charlotte had wonderful plans for their retirement – cruises, visiting Israel and the like. Following his retirement party, Harold and Charlotte went out to dinner with their best friends, Joe and Selma. Over dinner Harold asked Joe about joining them on a Caribbean cruise next January. Joe and Selma always wanted to go on a cruise, but never felt comfortable with spending that kind of money. Joe mentioned that in today’s economy one would have to be really rich to do that kind of thing. Harold chuckled and looked at Joe. “You know us for over forty years – do we look like the kind of people who are really rich?” Fortunately, because they invested in Bnai Zion annuities, they are still receiving their high rate of interest and don’t have to worry about the fluctuation in the market. The quarterly interest payments on Harold and Charlotte’s Bnai Zion Charitable Gift Annuity gives them the cushion to do some traveling. There are many ways to give to Bnai Zion and still live with a secure future. Bnai Zion has been in existence since 1908. Isn’t it about time you knew something about it? ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

He must not be defensive Q: I’m 38 years old and my wife is 31. We’ve been together for six years. We’re both educated and have no kids. I love my wife dearly and don’t want to lose her. She says she loves me also and wants to try to work things out, but she can’t promise me anything. I took our marriage for granted. It has become complacent. Although we spend a great deal of time with each other, romance and affection were lacking. I made her feel more like my buddy/best friend than my wife. In addition, I made it difficult for my wife to communicate with me because I get easily offended and tend to criticize back. As a result, she has withheld her inner feelings for three years. Now she says she is not sure if she can get those old feelings back for me. She recently told me she doesn’t feel affection for me anymore., and she is struggling with this. We are scheduled

for counseling. I pray each day that my wife will try as hard as me to patch things up. I am willing to make the necessary changes for the sake of our marriage. I also wonder if unrealistic expectations about marriage are involved here, since we both have solid core values. Do you have any advice? A: The best advice should come from this counselor you mention, as he or she will have a lot m ore information to go on than I do. The one thing I can say to you, based on what you’ve put down in your letter, is that you should go to this counselor with an open mind. You say that you love each other and that you treated your wife as a best friend, and yet she is quite upset. Your impressions of how you treated her and how she felt might be very different from hers, and if I’m right, this is going to come out as a result of the sessions with the counselor. If you get defensive, then this counseling is not going to have much effect. Since you admit you have this tendency, really try to listen to what the counselor has to say. You wife will undoubtedly have some private sessions, and she will be telling this counselor some of her feelings that she has not been able to communicate to you. It’s only by acknowledging those feelings that you can patch this marriage, and the only way you can do that is if you listen carefully without prejudice.

IRS to give offshore tax cases priority treatment BY STEVEN N. KLITZNER The memo sent to examination staff of the Internal Revenue Service was clear. Investigators should make sure offshore tax cases “receive priority treatment.” Indeed, internal documents released by the tax-collecting agency, coupled with public comments from IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman, leave little doubt the government will focus the brunt of its enforcement efforts on taxpayers who use offshore bank accounts to hide income. In anticipation of this newly aggressive tax enforcement, the IRS is offering temporary amnesty to those taxpayers hiding money overseas. Taxpayers who come forward will face fines, penalties and interests — but the IRS will waive all criminal charges, Shulman announced recently. “This is a chance for people to come clean on their own,” said the IRS commissioner. The emphasis on offshore accounts comes at an opportune time for the IRS. For the first time, U.S. officials have successfully pierced the secrecy veil of banks

in Switzerland, where many wealthy Americans hide money. Those using Swiss banks to evade income taxes aren’t the only ones who risk being caught by the IRS, however. Earlier agreements with credit cards companies have given the IRS unprecedented information about taxpayers who use a credit card linked to offshore accounts, such as in the Caribbean. A common tactic for tax cheats has been to funnel money to an overseas account, link the account to a credit card, and then pay all expenses in the United States using that credit card. Now that Swiss banks are cooperating and credit card companies are providing records, there’s no safe place to hide your money. It’s time to come forward. Steven N. Foreign banks and you BY ALAN LIPS In most places throughout our great country, if I asked someone how many foreign bank accounts they have, I would get a strange look. But not in Miami. We are such an international destination. The people that live here come from all over the world. Many of them still have family, homes and companies outside the US. Who educates these people as to their IRS filing requirements related to their foreign bank accounts and the stock in their foreign corporations? Is it something they should learn in their immigration process? Their attorneys, bankers, accountants? Amazingly enough, so few people that have these issues are even remotely aware of them. Even many US citizens who get involved in asset protection or who just do business outside the US may have foreign bank accounts or stock in foreign corporations. If you are a US tax resident by virtue of your physical presence in the US, a green card holder or a US citizen, here are the requirements. If you have a financial interest in or signature or other authority over a foreign bank account and this foreign bank account exceeds $10,000 at any time during the year, you are required to file form TD F 90-22.1 on or before June 30 of the following year. This form requires you to report, amongst other things, the maximum value of the account during the calendar year, the type of account (bank, securities etc.), name of financial institution, and the account number. If you do not comply with these requirements, you are faced with civil and criminal

penalties for failure to file of up to $500,000 and 5 years in prison. And being in Miami, with such a large international crowd, we certainly are on the IRS radar screen. What if you have an ownership in an offshore corporation or partnership? If this foreign company has investments, securities, real estate or even an active business, what are the requirements to report to the IRS? This reporting gets much more complex. There are different forms that the IRS requires based upon the type of foreign entity and depending upon any special elections that may have been made. The standard IRS form for a US person’s ownership in a foreign corporation is Form 5471 and it is filed with your personal income tax return (Form 1040) each year. It requires, amongst other things, detailed reporting on the foreign corporation’s business activity, identification of all US shareholders and the income and expenses and the assets and liabilities of the foreign corporation. There are civil and criminal penalties if this form is not timely filed. The bottom line is that if you are a US person and you have a foreign bank account or stock in a foreign corporation, you need to seek advice from experienced tax advisors to ensure that you are complying with all of the IRS’ very complex laws and reporting requirements. Many times it is a reporting requirement only that will take lead to any tax liability. But failure to comply can lead to serious problems that no one wants to deal with. Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center honors Comm. Bob and Arlene Diamond

Larry Herrup, Bill Landa, Vice Mayor Billy Joel, Sandra Joel, Arlene Diamond, Comm. Bob Diamond, Rabbi Jonathan Berkun, Dr. Amir Baron

Almost 400 guests filled Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center recently to honor two of Aventura's most beloved and respected couples, Billy and Sandra Joel and Bob and Arlene Diamond. The evening began with a sumptuous cocktail reception at the synagogue, after which guests were directed to the Soffer Sanctuary. Spiritual leader of this vibrant congregation, Rabbi Jonathan Berkun, spoke eloquently about how both the Joel and Diamond families consider Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center as their spiritual home, reflecting on the many accomplishments and contributions they have made to the City of Aventura, the Jewish community and the State of Israel. Recognition was extended to Honorary Chair Don Soffer; Gala Chairs William and Carole Landa and Ad Journal Chairs Larry and Becky Herrup. Dr. Amir

Bill and Carole Landa

Baron, Executive Vice president, and his outstanding team of professionals led by Donna Lasker, were also thanked for their monumental efforts to ensure a successful event. Synagogue President Larry Herrup, CPA, showed another one of his many talents as he presented a beautiful video presentation he created for this event, encompassing the lives of the honorees. Afterwards, each of the honorees spoke about their strong love of family, community and support for the worldwide Jewish community. Billy Joel said, "How proud I am to serve the City of Aventura as your Vice Mayor. Our "City of Excellence" is most fortunate to have this place of worship and learning here in our midst." Bob Diamond noted, " To be so honored by the community and synagogue, and to have so many of our friends and relatives there, made this

a most important event in our lives…something that Arlene and I will never forget." Comedian Dick Capri then took the stage , ensuring that everyone was in a great mood for the remainder of the evening. Afterwards, guests entered the magnificently decorated Raff Social Hall to the sounds of the Private Stock Orchestra. Much to everyone's delighted surprise, there were no speeches or presentations during the dinner... just a wonderful meal prepared by Premiere Catering, incredible floral arrangements from Amazing Flowers, and an evening that will be long remembered. For more information on Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, visit atjc.org or call 305-935-0666.

Nothing can compete with the views. Buyers pay a premium to have water views, golf course views, panoramic views, city views and the beauty of the sunrise or sunset. So, after paying the bigger buck for the view they purchased they should design the interior with the most attention to preserving their commodity view. Busy, and overly decorated interiors will overpower what they wanted most – a sweeping ocean view. It’s easier to keep it simple while preserving your view. The view and the visuals that drew them in to pick their property of choice will also be attractive for a potential buyer and new owner. As a seller my best advice to you is to keep it clean and simple with the choice view being your canvas. No need to buy pricy art and for heavens sakes no fancy window treatments. Most new condo’s

have floor to ceiling windows that open up the view so don’t close it up with lots of outdoor furniture. This furniture has to come in anyway during a hurricane warning or if you leave town for an extended stay. From my earliest days in Real Estate I learned quickly how important a view was. In a typical condo the same floor plan on one side of the hall versus the other was an easy $ 150,000 more for the view. Over the years clients have told me that the ability to sit on a terrace overlooking the tranquility of the waves of an ocean view or to be able watch the boats go by view allows them to cancel their therapist appointments. When I go for a listing appointment and the view’s are good I know it’s a home run. Views are more important then anything. Views are king. So don’t detract or take away from what your dream was and you’ll reap the benefits of your investment. Call Denise Rubin at 305.409.0019 for all your Real Estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for all listings and virtual tours.

Ideally, there really shouldn’t be anything “wiggly or jiggly” on your body – but if you’ve already tried to firm up your triceps to no avail – you know how frustrating it can be to see strong results. When it comes to arming yourself with more knowledge to turn “flab into fab” - this old adage especially holds true: If at first you don’t succeed, “tri-tri” again! According to trainer Marc David of beginning-bodybuilding.com, the muscle that is most problematic for flabby arms is the tricep. He explains, “First, get the idea out of your head that there’s any such thing as ‘spot reduction.’ Meaning, if you do certain exercises for that area, the fat will magically disappear just from there and your arms will suddenly be taut and tone again. So the first thing you want to do is reduce body fat. “Many people are caught up in the idea that in order for them to get rid of a problematic area they need to just work it out and do some exercises to target that area. But that’s only half of the solution. By working out the area AND reducing body fat, you will progress at twice the speed and make twice the visual differences. By doing both, you will tone up (build) the tricep and make it more visible when the layer of fat that covers it up is reduced. Next, in order for that area of your arm to become toned, you’ll want to build muscle.” There are several good tricep exercises you can do including: Tricep Kickback: Hold chosen resistance in hands and bend over until torso is parallel to the floor, abs in tight and legs bent to take the strain off the lower back. Bend elbows and pull them even with back. Straighten arms behind you, squeezing the triceps and slowly lower back down. Tricep Extension: Sit on chair, ball or bench (or stand) and hold dumbbells with both hands, elbows bent to no lower than 90 degrees, weight directly behind your head and elbows close to ears. Without moving the elbows, straighten arms straight up over head, squeezing the triceps.

Tricep Press: Lie face up on floor or bench and hold barbell (or whatever you’ve chosen) with hands shoulder-width apart, elbows bent to no lower than 90 degrees. Without moving the elbows, straighten arms straight up over head, squeezing the triceps Tricep Dip: Start by sitting on a chair with hands right next to hips. Bring hips in front of chair (almost touching) and bend elbows to no lower than 90 degrees. Push back up without locking elbows. For women and men alike – if you want to fight flab, you have to have a onetwo punch: Reduce body fat and build muscle – then when you wear that tank top or strapless dress, you’ll really look like a knockout! Even if you don’t belong to a gym or you’re a beginner, the tricep exercises described above can be done with hand held weights compatible with your strength level that can be purchased at stores like Sports Authority – and all you need is a mat and a chair…so why not give it a tri?!

How to get that zing when you ain’t got that bling BY SYDNEY FAYE-DAVIS The Fabulous Fashionista Perhaps one of the good things that’s come out of the ‘stopping of the shopping’ is that it forces us to really get down to basics again. I’ve gained weight. The one thing I can control, and I’ve almost eaten my way out of my closet. Looking around at a gathering of my neighbors last night, I noticed I wasn’t alone. Not good. Anxiety is a double-edged sword and turning to food can be very comforting when we’re constantly bombarded by lousy economic news and it sends you to the refrigerator instead of the gym. Your greatest accessory is your body, figure flaws notwithstanding. We can work around those. Fashion wise, the key to looking fabulous at any age is being fit. A great white Tee Shirt and well fitting Jeans is an incredibly chic look. However, you have to be in great shape to pull it off. Match that with glowing skin and a sensational haircut and you will be a head turner.

Stick with black and white in the clothes department; add a red lipstick and a red bag for color and off you go. As the economy goes, so does fashion: Less is More. The days of wild shopping are over. So is Bling. With the ‘new economy’, my friends are telling me that they just don’t feel good about spending money on new clothes; especially new pieces that are similar to the ones that they already own. We are re-working what they have and adding a piece here and there. Now more than ever we must look terrific for ourselves and put our very best shod foot forward. As for the shine and bright colors in the spring collections, it’s easy to tire of these vivid prints which are really from last summer. For true change and spending smartly, and you’re serious about wanting to spruce yourself up, not only get a sensational haircut but get a new haircut that will give you a completely yet flattering new look and invest in a good esthetician for maintaining that healthy glow. As for me, I’m hitting the gym. Now. Sydney! Faye-Davis is a Professional Wardrobe Consultant and Fashion Stylist. She can be reached @ 305-613-3010 or at Sydney@TopShelfArtists.com
