Providence Saint John’s Health Center has been serving the Santa Monica and westside Los Angeles County communities since 1942. Though he joined the hospital just last fall, Chief Executive of Providence Saint John’s Health Center and Board Chairman of Saint John’s Physician Partners Michael Ricks says the steadiness of compassion and service that has sustained the organization for nearly 80 years continues to guide them, even in COVID-19’s unpredictable medical circumstances.

“I’ve never seen a team have to gel so quickly because of the emergent situation right in front of them and we did that,” he says. “It was amazing to have to orientate to a brand-new crisis requiring 24/7 leadership and to be able to do that, to quickly bond as a team, has been remarkable for us.”

Ricks commends the adaptability and teamwork of the staff and its support networks.

“Sometimes, even in hospitals, you have silos of different specialties. This crisis has caused all the ‘specialty silos’ to break down barriers; to put the best and brightest minds together across the whole organization to do what’s best for our patients and for this community.”

He adds, “To see that work and the increased collaboration around an unknown disease has been miraculous and remarkable.”
