The growing pains of Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on learning will fuel studies for years to come. Certainly, every family will have stories to share of successful approaches vs. approaches less productive. But one thing is certain. There was never an option for Education to stop.

In the months since SoCal schools of every grade level followed Governor Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home order, hundreds of thousands of students, parents, partners, spouses, kids and teachers have found themselves swimming in uncharted waters.

Students pre-school and primary through senior high; college undergrads through specialty degrees and PhDs; each have had to accept ambiguity and uncertainty as a long-term pop quiz. Teachers, professors, aids and administrators quickly shifted strategies from classroom- to online-based methods and technology. Parents and caregivers were thrust into role of tutor, teacher, and secretary. That combined spirit of adaptability and long-term vision ensures our history of successful learning will continue as long as we have students and teachers.

The majority of SMMUSD graduates regularly move forward with post-secondary education options. Many students move on to Santa Monica College (SMC), a two-year community college offering a number of undergraduate programs. SMC Superintendent and President Dr. Kathryn Jeffery says the College’s place as an enduring treasure is secure.

“Santa Monica College is a true community college, and celebrated 90 years serving this city in the Fall of 2019!”

Jeffery highlights the affordable, high-quality education. Local high school graduates who attend the college full-time through the SMC Promise Program receive free & priority enrollment, intensive support, textbook vouchers and other perks; lifelong/continuing education for local residents through programs such as SMC Emeritus for older adults; and access to the most extensive one-on-one student support/counseling network in California.

With an academic reputation as one of the best community colleges in the nation, SMC has transferred more students to University of California campuses than any other college in the country—celebrating a 29-year record at No. 1 in those UC transfers.

Parents and caregivers were thrust into roll of tutor, teacher, and secretary. That combined spirit of adaptability and long-term vision ensures our history of successful learning will continue as long as we have students and teachers.

SMC is also tops in transfers to USC and Loyola Marymount University and is the top feeder west of the Mississippi to the Ivy League Columbia University.
