WELCOME TO

The Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce has been serving Key West for over 100 years. Through those years, we have seen many changes that have left their mark on this island many of us call home. Whether you were born here or moved here from another place, we all know Key West is different. No, it is more than that, it is special. The word special flows through so much of this tiny island, our people, our businesses, and those that visit us.

We, at the Chamber of Commerce, are proud to continue to be a part of the history of Key West. As the oldest business organization serving Key West, we have been here through the good times and the not so good. Focused on building a strong community with an exceptional quality of life for our residents, our members and leaders have worked hard to continually meet the challenges our community has faced. Looking at where we have been and what we see for our future, the Board of Directors revised our mission statement.

The Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce works as a catalyst for business success, a convener of leaders, and a champion for a sustainable thriving community.

This mission statement is what the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce has been practicing over the one hundred years of our existence. The three C’s: catalyst, convener and champion are specific to not only the needs of our businesses, but also our community. We are proud to be that business organization serving Key West.

The last “C” I would like to add, is change. Change is a natural part of life. Your Chamber understands change and has been part of it working for strong outcomes for Key West. We will continue to be part of the change for our businesses and community. It is our hope that you will join us in the continuation of building a sustainable and thriving community for all to enjoy.

Definition & Advocacy

While 2021 was the year of embracing change, 2022 was the year of definition and 2023 is the year of advocacy. We have never experienced as many changes as a society, as a community, in business and as an organization the last three years.

Covid hit hard in early 2020 and put our destination in lock down for over six weeks. We struggled to deal with a pandemic we had not seen in our lifetimes and for one there was no plan. We reopened to unprecedented business levels. As if that was not enough of a challenge, we fought over cruise ships and anguished over contract labor and other staffing challenges. We had to work harder, smarter and differently to navigate through these times.

The Chamber itself did the same as an organization. At the end of 2019, the Executive Vice President of over 39 years retired and we found ourselves without a rudder. We struggled and finally got our sea legs back in 2022. We revamped our mission statement to read “to convene leaders, be a catalyst for successful business and champion for a sustainable thriving community”. The Board has put a focus on advocating for the business community because we want to make sure there is a thriving economy in Key West for a long time.

These advocacy efforts have included attendance at all City Commission meetings, reviewing the agenda and reporting on any items pre and post that affect the business community, review of County Commission meetings, and participation in committees. The Chamber has developed a legislative agenda and publishes a legislative newsletter in an effort to keep members up to date on city, county and state issues.

In this publication, we are pleased to share with you the oldest businesses in Key West that have withstood changes over time - and hope their resiliency will inspire other businesses.

The Chamber also believes education is paramount. This issues highlights three recipients of the Honor Roll 100/ Charlie P. and Orsalina Toppino Annual Scholarship. This scholarship has been awarded on Class Night for thirty years. The Chamber also supports our community’s teachers and recognizes 22 of the best every year.

The Chamber is proud to be a trusted resource for information through data retrieval, analyzation and dissemination. We are fortunate to have a full time research director who helps us accomplish this goal.

We are also proud of our role as the official Tourist Development Commission’s Key West Visitors’ Information Center. We answer phone calls from those wishing to visit the island and provide a personal welcome to those that enter our doors. Even if you are not a visitor, we welcome you to visit us at our beautiful building, Old City Hall on Greene Street behind Sloppy Joe’s!

The Key West Chamber of Commerce is an organization that has been around more than 100 years and we plan on being around to continue our work for the business community for many more years to come.

Two hundred years ago, on July 3, 1823, the Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida passed “An Act, to provide for the organization of a county south of Charlotte Harbour in the Territory of Florida...to be called Monroe County.” This new county, Florida’s sixth, had a northern boundary that ran from the mouth of Charlotte Harbor to the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee, to Boca Raton, and it took in every part of the territory southward, including the Florida Keys. By 1890, though, as Florida’s population grew and spread, it was winnowed down to its present limits.

6 I THE GREATER KEY WEST CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I I @keywestchamber F @KeyWestChamber L@keywestchamber

f course, the county has a much deeper past. Native Peoples first inhabited the Florida Keys some 4,000 years ago. They lived in villages up and down the island chain and survived largely by living off the bounties of the sea – fish, turtles, conchs, and manatees were staples of their diet. But their lifestyle changed abruptly with the arrival of the first Spanish explorers.

In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon sailed the Florida Coast and encountered the Keys, which he called the “Martyrs” because he thought they resembled the floating heads of suffering men. Juan Ponce also discovered the swift Gulf Stream current between the Keys and Cuba. This “river in the sea” flowed toward Europe and offered ships a significant boost in speed; a discovery that forever changed transatlantic shipping. Following this course, Spanish galleons loaded with New World riches traveled

past the Keys on their way home. But sailing along the islands was hazardous: Oceanside, lurking just below the surface, lies the Florida Reef, and hurricanes could appear seemingly from nowhere to drive vessels into its teeth. In 1622 and 1733, Spanish treasure fleets lost many ships, souls, and riches to the infamous ship trap.

In 1821, after centuries under Spanish control, Florida was ceded to the United States. In 1822, Lt. Matthew Perry arrived onboard the USS Shark and planted the US flag on Key West, establishing the island as a US territory and opening it for commerce. While the Navy worked to rid the area of pirates, a fledgling community began to grow. The backbone of the new economy was wrecking – the rescue and salvage of ships that ran onto the reef – and a wrecking court to oversee the lucrative business was established. Smaller wrecking communities formed at Key Vaca (Marathon), Indian Key, and Tavernier Key. The business thrived and

was quite lucrative, until the mid-to-late 1800s, when lighthouses began to mark the reef as an area to be avoided. Keys residents also made their living from the ocean in other ways: fishing and the harvesting of sea turtles and sponges were long integral to the Keys’ economy.

Though geographically isolated, the Keys were not immune to outside strife. When the Civil War broke out, the US Army and Navy were already present at Key West and kept the Keys under Union control. During the four-year conflict, Key West and the Dry Tortugas were essential bases for the naval blockade of the Confederacy. In the later 1860s, many Cubans began to chafe at Spanish rule, which brought an instability that led some of the leading cigar manufacturers to move their businesses to Key West, resulting an influx of Cuban cigar makers to the island, virtually all supporters of Cuban independence. Key West became a seat of revolutionary support, and pro-independence

leader Jose Marti visited regularly, seeking financial, political, and tactical support from the Cuban emigres. Cuba was freed from Spanish rule in 1898, after the US battleship Maine sailed from Key West to Havana, where it mysteriously blew up; an event that drew the US into the Spanish-American war.

At the dawn of the 20th century, a time when far ming was predominant on the Upper Keys, Key West was a growing commercial port, and the visionary tycoon Henry Flagler saw an opportunity to capitalize on this by building a railroad from the mainland to Key West harbor, so goods could then be carried northward by rail. “Flagler’s Folly,” as detractors called the railroad project, took 10 years to build, but in 1912, the first train arrived in Key West. The railroad was revolutionary in that for the first time the Florida Keys were accessible by means other than boats. And with trains traveling along the entire island chain, Key Largo, Tavernier, Marathon, and Big Pine Key began to thrive and grow.

keywestchamber.org I 9
Custom House and harbor, Key West 1900

In 1935, a ferocious hurricane devastated the Upper Keys, killing hundreds and washing away entire communities. With repairs to infrastructure deemed cost-prohibitive, the railroad was abandoned. This terrible misfortune happened during the Great Depression, when Keys’ communities were already going broke and losing residents. To revitalize the Keys, the federal government instituted a rescue plan designed to make Key West in particular a tourist destination, rich in arts and culture. With the renowned author Ernest Hemingway already living on the island, setting a tone, the strategy was

largely successful. The Overseas Highway, built on the former railroad bed, was completed in 1938, and it allowed visitors to travel to the Keys in their own vehicles and on their own time

When World War II broke out, the US Navy increased its presence at Key West and Boca Chica Key, and the lower keys became a “Navy town,” bolstered by the military’s increased spending and

employment opportunities. In the Cold War era, the idyllic but vital Keys bases hosted Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and John Kennedy. The Florida Keys’ military role in keeping communism and Soviet influence in check was highlighted in the tense weeks of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when

troops and batteries of missiles were installed along the length of the islands. Also in the post-war era, massive shrimp beds were discovered in the waters of the far western Keys. This led to a financial windfall for fishermen in the form of “pink gold.”

In the mid-1970s, because of changing needs, Naval Station Key West closed, which stifled the local economy. Shrimp catches began to decline, too. Things looked grim, but the Keys once again turned toward tourism to bolster the economy. Following the lead of playwright Tennessee Williams, a gay community made Key West home and brought a fresh spirit; local arts were revitalized, grand but decaying “Conch houses” were brought back to life, and the annual joie de vivre “Fantasy Fest” celebration was established. In this renewal

the Overseas Highway was widened, its bridges rebuilt, and more hotels were constructed, opening the door even wider to the place singer Jimmy Buffet had famously dubbed “Margaritaville.”

As development has increased, putting pressure on Monroe County’s natural beauty, it has long been understood that guardrails are necessary. The Key West National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1908, and the Great White Heron, Key Deer, and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuges followed. Everglades National Park covers Florida Bay and most of mainland Monroe County, and Dry Tortugas National Park encompasses the westernmost keys. In 1990, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary was established to aid the ailing Florida reef tract. These large, protected areas are bolstered by multiple state parks, and all ensure that the original grandeur of southernmost Florida is preserved for the future.

Today, relics of the past are found throughout the Keys; “ghosts” that come in many forms: railroad bridges, 19th century homes, Civil War forts, old cigar factories, shipwrecks, and lighthouses. Spanish and Bahamian surnames are still common, as is a love for Cuban coffee and cigars. Navy pilots, Army Rangers, and Coast Guardsmen train in and patrol the skies and waters; a hard working “live and let live” tropical lifestyle is punctuated with parties and festivals; and, of course, everyone in the Keys is somehow connected to the ocean. All of it reminds us that, in almost every way, Monroe County is unlike anywhere else, something that has been true for centuries. Happy 200th birthday!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

The Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce has awarded annual scholarships to outstanding local students graduating in Key West since 1993. The Honor Roll 100/Charley P. & Orsolina Scholarship was established by the Toppino family in honor of their parents and grandparents. The scholarship is funded by contributions from Toppino & Sons, Inc. and Monroe County Concrete, Inc. in addition to donations made by Chamber members.

Applicants are reviewed by the Education Committee and selected based on academic achievement, community service, and involvement in extracurricular activities, as well as financial need. These past recipients detail the benefits the scholarship provided and how the funds impacted their education and career paths.

Erica (Hughes) Sterling

In 1993, Erica Hughes became the very first Honor Roll 100 scholarship recipient. Erica was accepted into the University of Florida as an accounting major. She graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting and went on to earn a Certified Public Accountant license.

“The scholarship helped financially, but also really helped me mentally. Just knowing that others had enough confidence in me to award me a scholarship was really motivating.”

After graduating, Erica quickly learned that an accounting career was not the right path for her and decided to pursue a law degree. She was accepted into the Levin College of Law to continue her education at the University of Florida and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree - the highest education available in the legal profession.

Erica passed the bar exam and began working at the Spottswood Law Office. She has become a partner in the firm, now called Spottswood, Spottswood, Spottswood, and Sterling, PLLC.

Her advice to future recipients is “Don’t doubt yourself. Always challenge yourself, or you won’t know how much you can really accomplish.”

Angela Grace Martin

Angela Grace Martin graduated in 2014 from Key West High School and enrolled at Florida State University as a Theater major with a minor in Business. While pursuing her degree, Angela credits the scholarship with the free time to pursue interests outside of the classroom. Angela worked two to three jobs during summers to dedicate fall semesters to a full class schedule as well as auditions, rehearsals and performances during the busy theater season.

“Not having to work in the fall semester really allowed me to pour myself into the theater program. Not just my classes, but everything that goes into production, and backstage aspects like lighting, makeup, and costume.”

Angela also attended the Theatre Academy in London through an FSU Study Abroad program, gaining experience from high-caliber instructors and exposure to established professionals.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater from FSU, Angela returned to Key West and put her acting skills to use as a one-woman ghost tour guide for six months before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

Angela was recently awarded Best Supporting Actress in the Last Vegas Film Festival for her role in “The Can,” a short film nominated for 28 awards and winner

Sarah (Rodriguez) Paez

Sarah graduated from Key West High School in 2006 and was the first in her family to attend college. She pursued an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and was quickly drawn to trauma care. Sarah became a certified Emergency Medical Technician and then moved across the country to accept a job in Seattle, Washington, where she worked for three years before the birth of her first child.

“I was able to go back to college and use my nursing school accreditations to

earn two degrees as a mother of four in my thirties – which may not have been an option for me without the scholarship.”

In 2020, Sarah graduated with dual bachelor’s degrees in special education and Elementary Education. Sarah now has four children and works as a substitute teacher. Next year, she will teach elementary school part-time to have time for family.

Her advice to future scholarship seekers is “To try. Don’t think you won’t get a scholarship. There are so many opportunities out there, so make the effort to apply for every scholarship you qualify for.”

HISTORICAL BUSINESSES IN KEY WEST

Settled in 1822, Key West has always been a prosperous port city. By the 1830s, “Cayo Hueso” was the wealthiest city per capita in the United States. As a home to pirates, a harbor for wreckers, a haven for immigrants, a manufacturer of cigars, and a harvester of sponges, the island paradise lived many lives long before the Overseas Railroad first arrived in 1912. After the Keys were devastated by the Hurricane of 1935, the railroad was converted into a

highway - just in time for the expansion of the Navy before and during World War II. As the Navy’s presence waned over the years, the small city transformed again into the sister city of Havana and a winter retreat of seasonal residents, before solidifying its current status as an international tourist destination. Through all of the changes in Key West, the following local businesses have navigated the highs and lows and continue to prosper today.

Captain Tony’s

In 1851, 428 Greene Street operated as an icehouse that was also home to the Key West Mortuary. During the Spanish-America War of 1898, the building housed a telegraph station that was the first to receive word from Cuba that the USS Maine had been destroyed in Havana Harbor - and the first to report the shocking news all over the world.

The small structure served as a cigar factory by the time the Overseas Railroad was completed in 1912. It then became a bordello, then a gambling hall named the Blind Pig, before becoming a saloon for the first time. Dubbed the Duval Club and patronized by sailors stationed in the area, the bar landed on the Navy’s “off-limits” list and was forced to close after business decreased by 80 percent.

In 1933, Joe “Josie” Russell, Ernest Hemingway’s friend and fellow fisherman, leased the building and granted it one

more life to live. He named it Sloppy Joe’s as a nod to their friend Jose Garcia, owner of a saloon in Cuba by the same name. It was a regular hangout spot for Hemingway until 1938, when the landlord raised the rent $1 per week. In the middle of the night, owner Joe alongside staff and patrons, took everything out of the bar and walked it over to 201 Duval Street where Sloppy Joe’s still stands today. Captain Tony Tarracino, a celebrated local and charter boat captain, bought the bar in 1958 and suitably named it after himself. In the early 1970s, a budding musician named Jimmy Buffet performed on the small stage and rumor has it he was often paid in tequila. Capt. Tony’s is mentioned in Buffett’s tune, The Last Mango in Paris, making it an instant legend.

Dean-Lopez Funeral Home

died in 1931, the funereal home was passed onto his sons, Ben “Big Hearted Benny” Sawyer and W. Warren Sawyer. Warren managed the business until Eveline died in 1954.

The building hasn’t changed much since then. Ghost encounters and fish stories linger in the dense air and essence left behind by rowdy crowds, musicians, and even celebrities looking for a reprieve from fame. Captain Tony’s Goliath grouper still hangs above the door promising luck to those who can land a coin in its mouth from the sidewalk. History surrounds patrons in the form of stools decorated with names of notable folks under a ceiling of tattered dollar bills, business cards, and brassieres. The building continues to stand as a testament to “the old Key West,” a small piece of the island determined to remain unchanged.

In 1869, as commerce on the island flourished and the population grew, Robert Murrow opened Murrow Undertaking at 619 Fleming Street. Around that time, Benjamin “Bennie” Lopez had immigrated from the Bahamas to Key West and at just nine years old, he was delivering groceries and goods in a goat-pulled wagon. As a teenager, Lopez was hired by Murrow to take caskets to the cemetery. Not long after, Lopez trained under Murrow to learn the undertaking business. The successful business moved to Duval for a few months before moving again to Eaton and Bahama Streets. After Murrow’s death in 1899, Lopez bought the business and renamed it the Lopez Funeral Home.

In 1899, Lopez married Key West native Eveline Knowles and moved the business to 413 Bahama Street in 1904 where it continued to operate successfully until Lopez passed in 1922. Eveline then hired Lopez’s half-brother, G. Frank Sawyer, to help manage the business. When Sawyer

Warren Sawyer and his wife, Nellie Bethel, continued to run the business, passing their knowledge down to their children - Donna, Nancy, and Frank. Donna Sawyer married Robert “Bob” Dean in 1953 and they constructed a new building at 418 Simonton

Street in 1958. After Sawyer’s passing in 1972, Robert Dean purchased Lopez Funeral Home. It became the Dean-Lopez Funeral Home in 1975. Today, Mr. Dean is in the office daily and the business continues to thrive 154 years later.

Green Parrot

In 1890, as Cuban and Bahamian immigrants arrived in Key West, there was a small grocery store on the corner of Whitehead and Southard Streets owned by Antonio Sanchez. Most nights, the back room transformed into a venue of impromptu jam sessions, filled with thumping rhythms and catchy melodies by talented local musicians. This scene would later become famous when Antonio’s grandson and world-renowned artist, Mario Sanchez, etched it into one of his famous woodcuts.

By the start of WWII, the grocery store had become the Brown Derby Bar, a closedin and air-conditioned establishment that attracted sailors and fisherman as well as locals. As the Navy’s presence began to diminish in the 70s, less and less sailors frequented the Brown Derby, when it became a regular gathering place for fisherman, bohemians, residents, and the occasional tourist. When owner Judy Sullivan realized

the usual crowd had transformed into an eclectic mix, she modified the building into an open-air venue of street-facing windows and renamed it The Green Parrot.

In the 1950s, the discovery of Key West Pink Shrimp spurned a “pink gold” rush and morphed once again into a “fisherman’s honky tonk.” Jim and Linda Bean bought the bar in 1983 and hosted live bands of all genres just as the island began to flourish as a tourist destination. Visitors began to dot stools between regular patrons and fishermen to hear original, quality live music vibrating from the small wooden stage. Locals affectionately began referring to it as just “The Parrot” and solidified it as the prime destination for great bands and dancing for almost thirty years. The Beans left the business in 2011 and their partner, John Vagnoni, then teamed up with Pat Croce to continue the bar’s legacy. The Green Parrot still beats with jamming tunes and draws large crowds that seep onto sidewalks and ooze out of the giant windows. Even now, stepping through the wide doors feels like walking into a familiar place back in time, blissfully unaware and untouched by the changes that surround it.

Porter Allen Company

The Porter Allen Company was founded in 1891, when successful businessmen George W. Allen and William R. Porter combined their interests in an insurance agency and the First National Bank. Allen and Porter served their island city in various civic organizations and as local government officials in addition to their involvement in the economic development of Key West. In the early 1940s, Porter sold The Porter Allen Company to William A. Freeman Sr., who worked as a Cashier at the First National Bank and served on the Key West City Council.

Freeman was later joined by his sons, William A. Freeman Jr., and David W. Freeman. As William Freeman Jr. pursued public service as a County Commissioner, State Representative, and Monroe County Sheriff, his brother, David W. Freeman, excelled in the insurance business. David earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and serviced his customers with integrity from 513 Southard Street, where it still operates today. Later, the brothers were joined by Billy’s son, William A. Free[1]man III, and David’s daughter, Elizabeth Freeman.

At the age of 91 years old, David still works in the office daily, managing the agency side by side with Elizabeth. For over 80 years, the Freeman family has served the insurance needs of the community. The Porter Allen Company is the oldest insurance agency in Key West, The Florida Keys, and South Florida. Over 130 years since its inception, the Porter Allen Company continues to provide insurance to Key West and the Florida Keys.

Key West Citizen

In 1879, Walter Willard Thompson started the only newspaper that circulated on the island, The Key of the Gulf. Soon after, TJ Appelyard acquired a weekly paper organized by citizens known as the Key West Herald. After The Key West Herald quickly consumed Thompson’s paper, Appelyard combined the two to create the Inter Ocean. In 1900, Thompson resumed direction of the Inter Ocean until its demise in 1906.A small weekly paper named The Citizen appeared in 1904 and lasted for a short time until Thomas Treason Thompson, Walton Willard Thompson’s cousin, and Macy B. Darnell consolidated their newspaper holdings. Thompson and Darnell changed the name to the Key West Citizen and printed its first weekly edition in 1906.

The Thompsons and Darnell sold the paper to local patriarch, L.P. Artman, in 1912. Artman modernized the paper with a new journalistic style, purchased the island’s first linotype machine. When the paper quickly outgrew the building, Artman moved the business to 515 Greene Street.

After L.P. Artman passed in 1954, his son, Norman, became the paper’s publisher. Norman discontinued the Saturday Key West Citizen and replaced it with a Sunday edition in 1957. Less than a decade later, Norman D. Artman sold the Key West

Citizen for $2.5 million to Charles D. Morris of the Southeastern Newspapers Corporation. Southeastern owned other small papers in Augusta, Savannah, and Athens, Georgia.

In 1988, The Citizen became a morning paper and its offices moved to Northside Drive, where it remained for over 30 years.

In the 1990s, Thomson acquired five small weeklies in Big Pine, Islamorada, and Key Largo, called the Free Press Community Newspapers. In 1998, Thomson added Solares Hill, another local paper founded in 1976, to his growing collection.

Thomson then bought Global Audience Providers and created keysnews.com and floridakeys.com, modernizing the paper once again by offering online editions. Thomson sold the paper to John Kent Cooke Jr. and his brother Tom Cooke in 2000, and it became locally owned for the first time since 1968. In 2018, the paper was sold to Adams Publishing Group and was moved out of the Northside offices it had occupied since 1988.

Today, residents and tourists browse the pages of the Key West Citizen for current events, just like the island’s residents first did back in 1879.

Pepe’s Café

In 1909, a Cuban Fisherman known as Pepe opened a small restaurant dubbed Pepe’s Café & Steakhouse. The restaurant was an immediate hit at 201 Duval Street, where it endured two World Wars and the Great Depression.

Pepe’s moved to a larger building on Catherine Street for a short time before nestling into 806 Caroline Street in the 1950s. As the second oldest restaurant in Florida, Pepe’s has had just five owners in over 100 years, each of them carefully maintaining, preserving, and honoring its legacy. The worn wooden booths speak of times long gone, while stories of the past linger through, carrying on the tradition of delicious food, great service, and unwavering piece of Key West history.

Island City House

In 1880, a wealthy merchant built his family home at 411 William Street. In 1888, an accompanying carriage house was erected on the adjoining property at 810 Eaton Street. Both structures were

beautifully detailed with ornate architectural features of the time, including gingerbread railings and intricate woodwork. The family converted the home into a guest house in anticipation of visitors the Overseas Railroad would bring to the island. Behind the carriage house hidden from street view, a third structure was later built to recognize The Alfonso Cigar House that once stood on the property.

Casa Marina

When Henry Flagler began building the East Coast Railway in 1907, he also planned to construct a luxury beachfront

resort in Key West, and the vision for the Casa Marina was born. The resort at 1500 Reynolds Street was completed in 1921, with rounded arches flanking the patio to replicate the support arches of railroad bridges. Built to last, the concrete structure survived the Great Hurricane of 1935 with almost no damage. During World War II, as the US prepared for foreign threats by sea, the Navy acquired

the building in 1942 through eminent domain and converted it into officers’ quarters until 1946.

It was owned by private entities until 1962, when it was commandeered by the US Military during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Canons were positioned on the beach and the building’s perimeter was cordoned off with barbed wire fencing.

Key West native and Senator, John Spottswood purchased the Casa Marina in 1966 and leased it to Peace Corp to train volunteers. From 1967 – 1976, “The Casa” remained mostly empty, save for the Birdcage Lounge and adjoining outdoor patio.

From 1976 – 1979, the resort was purchased by an unknown private owner and underwent complete renovation that included the addition of a suites building facing Seminole Street. In 1984, an additional suites building was added on Reynolds Street.

The property changed hands many times between multiple owners and hotel flags from 1984 – 2005.

Today, the sprawling property is an upscale resort of the Curio Collection.

Fausto’s

Fausti no “Fausto” Castillo came to Key West from Havana, Cuba in 1910. In 1926, he opened a small grocery store on the corner of Packer and Virginia Streets until the successful business outgrew the building. Castillo found a larger space located on the ground floor of a home on 600 Fleming Street and converted it into a grocery store. Meanwhile, he married Key West local Ana Luisa Alvarez and they had a daughter, Ana Luisa.

In 1939, Ana Luisa met skilled meatcutter Carl Weekley at the store, whom she later married. 1949, Castillo moved Fausto’s down the street to 522 Fleming Street where it continued to flourish until it caught fire and burned down in 1966.

After the fire, the current Fausto’s building was erected in the same location. Today, the family tradition continues with Ana and Carl’s sons, Jimmy and Alton Week-

ley, who still own and manage Fausto’s Food Palace almost 100 years after their grandfather first opened his neighborhood grocery store.

Kino Sandals

Roberto “Kino” and Margarita Lopez fled Cienfuegos, Cuba in 1960 to start a new life in Key West. The couple saved diligently and obtained a bank loan to open a small shoe factory on Whitehead Street called Kino Sandals. Lopez utilized his leatherworking skills to craft unique, high-quality sandals in an array of vibrant colors and designs that gained popularity with locals and visitors alike. Ten years later, the shop moved to a larger building at 107 Fitzpatrick Street, where it still stands. Kino and Margarita’s childrenRoberto, Ana, and Christina – continue to manage the factory today. The legacy will endure as their children, the third generation of the Lopez family to operate the business, carry forward the tradition established over 60 years ago when Kino Sandals first opened its doors.

The enduring establishments of Key West serve as a testament to the island’s remarkable resilience. They have successfully embraced change without compromising their identity, embodying a thriving community that evolves while preserving its timeless essence.
