The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) T Text & Photos Submitted

he Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) is a non-governmental organisation formed in 2003 by a group of young people, mostly University of Guyana (UG) students at the time – calling themselves Students Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination. SASOD was formed as a student lobby group to support the inclusion of sexual orientation as grounds for discrimination in the Guyana constitution. SASOD came into public on June 7, 2003, when the group held a forum for parliamentarians on the inclusion of sexual orientation as grounds for discrimination in the Guyana constitution. SASOD is a human rights organisation and movement, leading change to end discrimination based on sexuality and gender. SASOD seeks to have discriminatory laws repealed which criminalize Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual

and Transgender (LGBT) people, while advocating for the enactment of laws to protect the human rights of those marginalized. SASOD continues to be both protective and responsive in support (of) Guyanese LGBT communities by providing and linking these groups to services.

Human Rights Programme Freedom from discrimination and hatefilled violence is a right for all people. In Guyana, anti-LGBT discriminatory laws contribute to increased societal stigma and discrimination. The programme is designed to address the need to protect LGBT Guyanese from discrimination in the enjoyment of their human rights. As such the major components of this programme, SASOD engages in multi-pronged advocacy to challenge injustices and discrimination, lobby and engages government to change laws and

policies which discriminate against LGBT people and utilizes the United Nations and Inter-American Human Rights systems to pressure and hold the State accountable for its human rights obligations to LGBT people. SASOD is committed to ending all forms of homophobia in Guyana, including transphobia, biphobia and lesbophibia. To achieve this goal, the Homophobia(s) Programme, focuses on engaging key sectors of society where anti-LGBT prejudices are prevalent. The Programme seeks to cultivate positive changes in attitudes which drive stigma and discrimination against LGBT people. Because LGBT people suffer pervasive discrimination in Guyana, their access to basic socio-economic services, such as health, education, work and housing, is severely inhibited. SASOD

SASOD Managing Director Joel Simpson

provides services, referrals and develops programmes and researches solutions to address sexual health, mental health, literacy and remedial education, entrepreneurship and employment, and emergency shelter and housing for LGBT people. SASOD has been advocating to repeal laws which discriminate against LGBT people and for laws which protect persons from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. One of SASOD's proudest achievements is our signature annual ‘edutainment’ calendar event, SASOD’s Annual LGBT Film Festival. Our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) film festival started in 2005 and is in its twelfth year in 2016. “Painting the Spectrum” is the only annual LGBT film festival in the English-speaking Caribbean. Spectrum has influenced SASOD to produce its own films with the maiden “My Wardrobe, My Right” which opened the 7th festival in 2011.

SASOD is the founder and secretarial of the Guyana Equality Forum (GEF) which is a cohesive network of local civil society groups working collectively for human rights and equality of all Guyanese, including LGBT people. SASOD and GEF led the first pro-LGBT “Walk for Equality” on December 8, 2012, for International Human Rights Day, which was supported by a wide cross-section of CSOs, grassroots groups and international agencies. PERSONALITY

Jyoti Hardat Miss Universe Guyana Franchise Holder Photography: Submitted

Occupation: CEO Moonlight Productions Favourite dish: One of my many favourites would be Baked Ziti. Favourite movie: I have many. Home Alone is an all-time favourite. Favourite song: Wait for it - Hamilton Musical.

GEM: Which area did you grow up in and what was that experience like? Jyoti Hardat: I grew up in Timehri and was schooled in Georgetown. I lived on the edge of a hill overlooking the valley below with the Demerara river glistening in the distance. It was the most beautiful place to be. I still remember when I could see the rain as it approached from a distance over the trees below. GEM: We’ve heard about all the challenges faced by pageant holders over the years, so what prompted you to take over the Miss Guyana Universe franchise? JH: Firstly, I must say, I'm truly honoured to be the National Director of the Miss Universe Guyana Franchise. For me, this is an accomplishment beyond satisfying. My ability to own this franchise was not an abrupt one, it was a collection of interests and many different insights that propelled me thus far. I've always enjoyed working 12 | GEM 75, 2016

with women whether it's in simple groups as workshops or seminars or in complex instances like pageants. I'm a woman and I'm very in tune with the challenges we face as women and more so in a male dominated world. Given the role that women are expected to play in an evolving world such as ours, sometimes, it is almost impossible to keep ourselves composed and this is where my role, I believe would be of a benefit. My passion lies in reminding women that we are complex, dynamic and are capable of pursuing and conquering tasks that we may endure. Being the director of this pageant allows me the opportunity of empowering, inspiring and motivating women in many forms through the process of awareness and purpose. This I believe resulted in my profound interest of being the director of such a prestigious movement. GEM : W h a t a r e s o m e o f t h e challenges you faced since taking over the Miss Guyana Universe franchise?

JH: Nothing in life that is worthy and of value comes easily and if you need to see a change, you must start by being that change. Whether simple or in the complexity of a situation, it is important to always remain composed and persevere throughout. Pageant franchise holders have many challenges, this is in no way a myth, but with collaborative efforts and appropriate approaches in dealing with others, the challenges may be minimized or diminished altogether. As someone who has been observing from afar, I knew that there were certain changes that were needed if Guyana wanted to truly excel and harness the benefits of properly representing our country and this made me continue to pursue my aim. Things cannot be done if we just sit and hope for the best. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. As an optimist and someone who has the interest of young women at heart, I've decided to get the job done in a proper manner.

GEM: What in your opinion would you say is the secret to being a successful pageant queen?

also about her country so promoting Guyana to the rest of the world is set high on the agenda.

JH: Being a queen is one thing, but presenting yourself in that light which should reflect such is another and the overlap between those two extremes were mistaken over the years. Being a successful queen is also another collaborative effort between franchise preparation and the individualism of the young lady. The queen has to be very cognizant of the fact that she's not only representing herself, but the pride of a nation. Preparation goes a far way, it requires both awareness of the queen and the country she's representing. Training is a vital part of ensuring that the queen is perfecting every possible aspect of what she has to deliver and this will include a positive mental space. A queen who knows that her directors have her best interests at heart by preparing her with the proper training, wardrobe etc. will definitely boost her confidence and will allow her to perform at her best. The moral and patriotic support of a country is also needed in ensuring a successful queen.

GEM: In your opinion, what is the greatest achievement of the Miss Guyana Universe franchise so far?

GEM: What do you have planned for the next Miss Guyana Universe that will set her apart from the other candidates around the world? JH: The mere fact of her being Guyanese has already set the candidate apart from the rest of the world. Guyanese women are beautiful and strong and those are qualities that will render her capable of outshining the others. In addition, the new Miss Universe Guyana franchise is committed to ensuring that our chosen ambassador is fully prepared in all areas of representation so as to obtain the most desirable results. We have planned training in all areas with highly recognized coaches who have produced the results we are looking for, appropriately styled wardrobe for the level of the pageant, photo shoots with known industry professionals and ensuring our ambassador is aware of her purpose while equipping her with knowledge of her country, the industry etc. The job is not only about her but

JH: I must say that we've been encouraged by so many things that we are thankful for. Our major accomplishment thus far lies in our ability to do things differently with the franchise. That's the biggest and most essential accomplishment thus far and this is coupled by the fact that we have a very strong candidate competing for Miss Universe. She's the reflection of the strength of her people and herself and will be a great representative for our country and brand. GEM: Tell us about your experience being a past pageant delegate? JH: I've had both good and not so good pageant experiences. There were times where I was treated unfairly, misjudged and misunderstood altogether. However, I've also had great pageant experiences also. I've built relationships through sisterhood, I've discovered aspects of myself that may have been hidden and I utilized it to my advantage. All in all, both good and not so good experiences. I've learned that these experiences all aided in strengthening who I am as an individual. GEM: How does the Miss Universe motto “confidently beautiful” translate to the franchise? JH: The Miss Universe motto 'confidently beautiful' fits perfectly into our franchise. I actually love the outline and the message that this motto embodies. Being confidently beautiful does not mean it is all about appearance, beauty comes from within and if we are able to unlock that, it will radiate through us and shine outwards. Our franchise has started its first year by helping our contestants to find themselves, learn new skills and build on what they already know while giving back to our communities and standing up for the causes we hold dear. Our

franchise has the mission to promote the concept of humility that many have forgotten, by making community service mandatory to open our eyes to the realities of this world we live in. It has a lot to do with remembering that beauty is a collective attribute that should have been innately possessed by the chosen candidate to inspire others. GEM: What does the franchise hope to achieve in the future? JH: We want to raise the sash factor of our country on the international stage. Many South American countries are well known in the pageant world and we are neighbours to two powerhouses. We hope to develop our franchise to attract the right candidates and to show the world that our Guyanese beauty ambassadors can compete with the best. W ith the proper training, exposure and guidance, our ambassadors can positively boost our country’s tourism as well as develop themselves personally and professionally to achieve their dreams. GEM : B e s i d e s m a n a g i n g t h e franchise, what else have you chosen as a career? JH: CEO of Moonlight Productions and I also manage marketing for Swing Apparel NYC. Independent contractor - marketing and sales training GEM: Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people… JH: I’m scared of boats even though I was born in the Land of Many Waters. GEM: What is your philosophy on life? JH: “If little labour, little are our gains: Man's fortunes are according to his pains.” - Robert Herrick. It’s straight forward but was taught to me by my after-school teacher Sir Chandra, when I was younger and has stayed with me ever since. It has motivated me through many hardships. “Age is a number, nothing more. It cannot quantify life, for life is not lived in years, but in moments…and moments…well, they can take all or no time at all” - Natasha Renée Hayes.

varying backgrounds and experiences who have clearly drunk from the fountain of youth. These amazing women have willingly shared their advice on how to stay youthful and motivated.

In this exclusive, the women - some mothers and grandmothers, some working or homemakers credit regular exercise, hydration, yoga, moisturization, good genes and a positive attitude. They prove that when you are beautiful inside it radiates on the

Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve?: Any surprising outcomes?: Yes I have. No surprising outcomes. In your opinion, life begins at….?: 60 Must have cosmetic product: Ponds Cold Cream What advice would you give to your younger self?: Education is the key to success.

Ann Geer Age: 62 Marital status: Married to Paul Geer for nearly 40 years Children: 2 – Richard, 43 and Sacha, 37 Grandchildren: 1 – Joshua Geer, 25 Occupation: Semi-Retired Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: For a healthy mind, read! Social media is fun, but you learn important lessons in genuine reading and it costs almost nothing. Pick materials that challenge you as well as excite you and talk to others about ideas that make you think. Talk with people you disagree with and who have different experiences than you. Everyone has a story and an experience to share that we can learn from. For a healthy body, learn to cook! All people should know how to prepare a meal that is satisfying and nutritious. Men and women who cook and who cook healthy local foods save money, connect with their community and give themselves fuel for their next challenge. For a healthy soul, I suggest that everyone marries or finds a true partner. Pick someone who makes you laugh every day, who respects you and with whom you can learn and grow. And if that relationship stops working - make a good faith effort to repair the rift or end the relationship with respect and love.

I also suggest that you decide for yourself what your relationship will be with whatever God or Gods you choose. Your faith leaders can be wonderful, but faith is ultimately a personal relationship. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes? Everything is surprising. I could never have predicted the path my life will take, and couldn’t be more pleased at the place in which I find myself. The things that were important to me at 20, 30, 40, and 50 are not the same things that are important now. In my 60s I care less than ever about ‘things’ and more than ever about sharing experiences with those I love, both blood relatives and chosen family. In your opinion, life begins at….? Every phase of life has opened me up to new adventures. Life begins in childhood, if we give our kids the opportunity to play, get dirty, and learn compassion and empathy. Must have cosmetic product: Confidence and kindness make people more beautiful than anything that can be bought in a store. What advice would you give to your younger self? Don’t wait for someone else to give you permission to be amazing. You have it all within you if only you would trust yourself. Don't wait until you have 'time' to start volunteering and contributing to your community. Be brave and take that chance. And don’t wait until you are in your 40s to cut your hair off ☺! Exercise, laugh, eat right, savour great friendships Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: I am grateful to have achieved much. With each achievement comes a thirst for more. No surprises. I take them as I go. In your opinion, life begins at….?: Your awakening and selfrealisation…. Whenever that comes Must have cosmetic product: One is not enough. Lipstick What advice would you give to your younger self?: Your 20’s will get a speeding ticket so don’t believe them that there is time. Be thoughtful then savour every moment and experience

Karen Gordon-Boyle Age: 51 Marital status: Married for 25 years Children: I have three children, two sons and one daughter Grandchildren: Nil Occupation: Medical Doctor- Public Health Specialist Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: Reaching a level of spiritual maturity that allows you to rest with the calm assurance that no matter what hurdles you face, with God you can soar above them and in the end, become a stronger person than you were before. Daily routines that start with quiet time with God, eating healthy and regular exercise- I struggle with the last one! Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve?: Any surprising outcomes? Yes and no. I have achieved more than I initially set out to do but with each phase in my life I discover new potential areas for growth and I go for them! My latest goal is to learn Spanish and to 20 | GEM 75, 2016

complete a degree in theology one day. I have reached further than I set out to – academically, professionally and spiritually but now I realize there is so much further to go. I guess when I actually take stock of where I am today it is a bit of a surprise and I think the hurdles I faced in life propelled me to where I would probably not have reached had I not been challenged In your opinion, life begins at….?: The point in time when you recognize that you are a lot more than meets the eye – that there is a third dimension to self that needs to be nurtured and trained just like our bodies. Life begins when our God-consciousness yields itself to the guiding principles of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness and goodness Must have cosmetic product: A good Mary Kay brown powder What advice would you give to your younger self?: Never lose sight of your faith and live true to it.

Beverley Harper Age: 60 Marital status: N/A Children: 1 Grandchildren: none Occupation: Managing Director Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: Expel toxic people from your life, lend a helping hand to those less fortunate, dance with abandon, love with reservation but laugh often. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: If I had achieved it all, I would not have anything left to learn or to teach. When you stop learning, teaching and experiencing life, you may as well be dead. You never know what’s round the corner. At 60, when I expected to retire, I have been offered a position of even greater significance. In your opinion, life begins at….?: ... the time you realise the importance of pleasing yourself for the right reasons and not others because you think you should, but because they are worthy Must have cosmetic product: Drinking water, cleansing milk and moisturiser for the entire skin What advice would you give to your younger self? Listen to advice from older people especially your parents. They will not be with you forever and they are the only ones who have your back unconditionally. Time spent with them today is double the value when you only have memories.

Alana Maria King Age: 50 Marital status: Married Children: 3 Grandchildren: none Occupation: Company Secretary/ Director Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: I have found Yoga quite surprisingly to be the best therapy in maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul. It is one of the best ways to de-stress as well. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: This question is a bit ticklish. My accomplishments came not by setting goals but rather by

opportunities seized, hard work, the support of my husband and rewarding outcomes. I’m still enjoying the ride with all its ups and downs. In your opinion, life begins at….?: Haha…for those who know me well, life began for me with my first breath. Every stage of my life has shaped me into the woman I am today and heaven knows what’s in store for the next stage but I’m ready for it. Must have cosmetic product: Orogold Moisturiser for sure. Ladies! Moisturise! What advice would you give to your younger self?: Copy, Paste, Repeat.

14 Phenomenal Women Natheeah Akilah King Mendonca Age: 43 Marital status: Married Children: 3 - Jaleel, Jada & Jarel Mendonca Occupation: Business Relations Executive – Assured Services Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: Eat healthy, stay active and get enough sleep. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: Not as yet, I am still working on some of those goals. In your opinion, life begins at….?: For me life began in my mid 30’s because I think that’s the time when I felt I really understood and recognised the healthy balance of wisdom and youth, which prepared me mentally for the life that I am living today. I think life begins when you start experiencing a freeness and peacefulness of living, having maturity of the mind, being wiser and dealing with situations differently, not too much fussing of small stuff but just being humble with a shot of crazy if you wish. However, I think there is some degree of truth

about “life begins after forty”. Since I have hit that mark, I have not only been at peace with myself but I am also somewhat very carefree that I am the least to bother. Must have cosmetic product: Cleanser, toner, moisturiser, concealer /foundation, lipstick, eye-liner & mascara. What advice would you give to your younger self?: As early as you can, have a plan for your life (it’s okay to change it along the way but you should have a plan), if you don’t have a plan for your life, then others will make their plan with your life to achieve their goals. Live everyday like it’s the last day – have fun, do crazy things (not risky acts), spend time with family and friends, value the moments and just enjoy life. Adapt a focused attitude and value life. Be yourself, don’t be an imitation and don’t be afraid of having an opinion, just be respectful. Educate yourself because the more you know, the easier it is for you to understand why some things stay the same and why some people are, who they are.

Dr. Michele Ming Age: 54 Marital Status: Married Children: 4 - Stacy 27, Siobhan 25, Serena 22 and Calvin Stanley 20. Grandchildren: None Occupation: Optometrist / Eye Specialist. Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body and soul: Enjoying a balanced lifestyle. Stimulating work with enough time for relaxation and looking after yourself. Regular exercise and healthy eating habits. Spending quality time with family and friends. Have you achieved everything you want in life? Any surprising outcomes?: More than content with all that I have achieved so far. 24 | GEM 75, 2016

However, the only constant in life is change and there are so many new challenges and unique things to learn out there......My most surprising and treasured outcome is that I have not one but four children! They keep me forever young. In your opinion, life begins at......? The consoling answer is 50 since I am in my 50's. In fact, life can begin at any age you choose to make things happen. Must have cosmetic product: The natural look although sunscreen is a must for outdoor activities. What advice would you give to your younger self?: Balance academics and career with family and friends. Travel as widely as possible and appreciate life.

Maria Nadir Age: 60

Like any other young girl, in my early years I always fantasized about meeting (or marrying) royalty and traveling the world. While I did not marry royalty, I travelled to and lived in splendid places and was privileged enough to have met the Queen of England.

Marital status: Married Children: 3

Grandchildren: 2 Occupation: Homemaker Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: Prayers and faith, being contented with what I have. Exercise (arghhhh) but essential. Being respectful of others but also knowing when to shed the baggage -like a negative person -from your life. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: Yes – for the most part I have achieved everything I wanted to in life. My childhood was a difficult one. I grew up without the warmth of a mother and father in a place to call home and my life could have turned out very differently. I always aspired to have a family of my own. My children are my greatest accomplishments. For me, I pushed my children to complete their university education before they did anything else with their lives including marriage. Attaining their degrees and being at their graduations were some of my most profound moments in my lifetime.

In your opinion, life begins at‌.? Motherhood. Motherhood is essentially a wake-up call for a life filled with sacrifice, responsibility, happiness and let’s not forget the exhaustion! A woman learns what kind of person and woman she is when she has the well-being and the future of another person in her hands to guide. Must have cosmetic product: Skin moisturizers for face and body. What advice would you give to your younger self? Stay true to the values you learnt from your father. Life is about setting your own goals and working hard to achieve it. There are no short cuts or easy paths. Education is the one treasure that no person can steal, borrow or take away from you. Respect and love first yourself and then others. No matter how hard others try to tear you down, hold your head up high and lift yourself out of the mud because no one else will.

Carolyn Rahaman Age: 59 Marital status: Married 40 years Children: 2 boys and 1 girl Grandchildren: 4 boys and 2 girls Occupation: Manager/Owner JR Burgers (Part time home maker) Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body and soul: A healthy mind starts with being contented with what you have achieved in life, and being happy where you're at in your everyday lifestyle. A healthy body of course encompasses both diet & exercise. I am a firm believer in eating anything, but in moderation. Exercise at my age is vital for keeping me flexible & my bones stronger. My soul is fed by having a positive outlook on life, not stressing the small stuff and knowing that the Almighty is guiding my thoughts and actions. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes?: I feel very blessed to be where I am today.

Having my children & grand children around me in my daily life and knowing that the moral values I imparted to them, are now being passed on to their own children. This I feel is one of my achievements in life. In your opinion, life begins at...? In my opinion life begins at whatever age you feel mature enough to realize that there is more to life than partying, and taking things that people say personally. I guess if I have to give a # it would be 40. Must have cosmetic product: My musthave cosmetic product would be my lipstick. I am known for being a whizz at applying it without a mirror. What advice would you give to your younger self? My advice to my younger self would probably be to make sure you finish your education, enjoy your early 20's, get married later in life, have kids, when you are ready to devote your time to them and let everyone (especially your parents) know how much you love them before it's too late. Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes? Not yet but my surprising outcome this year is taking my health and fitness to a new level. At age 39 on Feb 1st 2016 I walked into a gym not feeling my left leg due to a trapped nerve and decided it was time to take my life back and heal my body against even my doctor. In a matter of six months I have become stronger and more determined to prove to myself that I can beat me at this. It’s Me VS Myself and I love where I’m going. In your opinion, life begins at….? Life begins when you find your true self. I don’t believe in putting an age to that because if you’re lucky enough to meet the right people and get the right opportunities presented to you in life you will find that that’s when your life really begins. Must have cosmetic product: Red lipstick What advice would you give to your younger self? To my younger self I would say be patient, less judgemental, don’t stereotype what you look for in a man, keep on your quest for knowledge, never be too proud to ask for help and remind the people you love that you love them.

In your opinion, life begins at….? When you truly learn who you are.

Children: Two loving, intelligent and beautiful daughters Occupation: Manager of Websource Guyana Inc. An Online shopping and freight forwarding service. Tips for maintaining a healthy mind, body & soul: Stress, in my opinion, is the most harmful thing for all three. I have learned that whatever comes my way I can deal with, so I try not to dwell on my problems anymore. What I cannot fix today, I put aside until I can. Regular exercise, a good night’s sleep and everything else in moderation keeps a body fit and healthy. A life filled with peace, love and laughter is the key for a healthy soul Have you achieved everything you wanted to achieve? Any surprising outcomes? Not Yet, Life is a work in progress. I’m finally learning how to relax and enjoy the journey. I have had so many surprising outcomes in the last couple of years that it would take half of this magazine to recount them. Let’s just say some were really sweet and others

Must have cosmetic product: Eyeliner What advice would you give to your younger self? Something I read on the internet a while back touched me deeply. I would tell my younger self that bad things happen to women who wait for good things to happen. Waiting to be noticed, heard, understood, appreciated, just constantly waiting. As you sit there in limbo waiting for good things to happen, other things are happening, other people make decisions that impact your life based on their needs, demands and manipulations. Basically people will use your life for their own purpose. Other people’s purposes are unlikely to be in your best interest. Take control over your own life and make your own decisions, your own choices because if you don’t they will be made for you by someone who does not feel the same sense of stewardship over your life as you do. Regardless of the fear, take an active part in your own life, learn how to look after yourself, you will eventually find the peace and happiness that you deserve.

ureka Medical Laboratories (EML) had extremely humble beginnings. Established on the 5th of March, 1995 in Guyana with basically two individuals, it has blossomed into a relatively large organization with several local branches/ satellite stations.

of blood samples and other body fluids. These assays are facilitated by the combination of qualified members of staff coupled with state of the art medical equipment. Further exotic tests, especially those with very small volumes, are outsourced to laboratories in the United States.

EML now operates in Georgetown (main office), New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Parika, Charity, Anna Regina, Linden and Bartica. Wisely led by its founders, Mr.W.A.Boyle, a microbiologist and Dr.K.L GordonBoyle, a medical doctor, EML has grown from strength to strength and managed to garner a sizable market share in Guyana. The competitive advantage secured over the years might have been attributed to its strict adherence to quality control practices, the hiring of qualified and competent staff and many years of accumulated experience in the field of laboratory science. Coupled with great customer service, EML’s welldifferentiated services have led to the domination of the local market. The laboratory has been certified on more than eight occasions and is internationally accredited. EML performs a very large quantity of tests

EML has achieved international accreditation in February 2016, thus becoming the first and only Medical Laboratory in Guyana to have joined the elite 5 medical laboratories in the Caribbean to be accredited.

DON'T GET SILLY DURING THE SILLY SEASON

STAY FIT!! Text: Kezqweyah Yisrael

I

t's that time of year that everyone (well, not everyone but quite a few) get excited and out of whack.... I call this the " silly season". Why? Because even the toughest gym freaks lose it and go off over eating, excessively drinking, and losing all the gains they fought hard and long for all year in the name of having a good time for the holidays... It's all good and well to have a good time but my contention lies with the overindulgence and its repercussions. I bet those of you reading these words this moment are totally unaware that your risk for all chronic diseases significantly rises during this time of the year. It's widely known that during and after the Xmas season there are more heart disease and heart attack cases than usual. Here's the thing……it's even more among men than women!!! (seems like you ladies have the heart in a better place around these times). Now with all the doom and gloom out the way let's settle on how you'll not be a victim but the Victor!! You'll be out more than you've been for most months tasting, toasting and dancing right, so gym time will be sliced into smaller pieces.

30 | GEM 75, 2016

Solution: change your training regime to match your limited time slots 1. Plan your program before entering the gym 2. Train using a stop watch and manage your rest periods to make the most of your allotted training time 3. Do compound exercises (train using upper body and lower body exercises in combination) 4. Train with your head phones on and don't allow anyone to distract you from your mission 5. Train using tools like Kettlebells, resistance bands, barbells and dumbells. 6. If you can't get to the gym, train with your own body weight using 4 to 6 moves repetitively with minimal rest and get a good sweat on 7. If you’re at home and have access to a stairway use it for some sprints up and down along with some upper body moves and get in a great interval session 8. For your eating, have just enough or what you need and position your friends, family and others to respect and accept that you are going to stay committed to maintaining your overall health

during this (silly) season. 9. Avoid the high salt content foods as much as you can. 10. Drink lots of water (most don't do so all year round and still don't during these days) 11. When out have less alcohol and drink more natural juices 12. At dinner consume more of the fresh foods, like fruits, nuts and vegetables (these will fill you up faster and also are high nutrition density foods) The smart thing to do now is to schedule and stick to your health and wellness program. Deliberately choose not to run with the crowd and let go of your good habit patterns built up all year long. So there you have my two cents of how to stay on track during the coming holidays... t is a distinct honour to present to you one of Guyana’s exceptional Ambassadors Dr. Astell Collins. He is the UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Golden Rule International and Interfaith Peace‐Building as well as the Advisor for the office of Ambassador Clyde Rivers. Furthermore, Dr. Collins is the C.E.O. of (Better Defined One) BD1 Leadership, who is an author, poet and an inspirational conference speaker with a wealth of experience in leadership development. Moreover, he is the one people call upon for his brilliance in transforming the way people think. Dr. Astell Collins is the recipient of several prestigious international awards which includes South Africa "IKUSASA - special recognition Award", the United Nations "Golden Rule International Award", the USA "International Champions of His Community" and also from Guyana "Award of Excellence”. He was included within an elite group of world 32 | GEM 75, 2016

leaders as he was awarded with the Global Leadership Award at Capitol Hill, Washington DC. Recently, he was appointed as a Global Representative for the Golden Rule International and Interfaith Peace-Building Initiative for Caribbean States and its Territories. He was also appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Guyana and as Youth Advisor for PANCAP Coordinating Unit (CARICOM). Dr. Collins is a highly sought after keynote speaker for conferences, seminars and workshops for Government institutions, religious organizations, universities, schools etc., both nationally and internationally. This remarkable strategist believes in the value of humanity and lives intentionally to transform followers into leaders and leaders into agents of change. He believes that everything rises and falls on the quality of leadership. He was a mentee of the late Dr. Myles Munroe and it was

Astell’s exposure to his books at an early age that challenged the way he saw himself and how he perceived his world. For this he had developed a profound respect and love for Dr. Munroe and his work. Astell has developed an acute sensitivity to living a purpose-driven life and thus has become very selective with the invitations he accepts. At this point he told us that the two most important days in our lives is the day we were born and the day we discover why. In fact, as a principle, he tries to respond to what he believes to be destiny impacting assignments and not just make appearances. This is quite interesting since the demand for him has intensified over the years after returning to Guyana from South Africa. While living in South Africa, Dr. Collins conducted leadership development seminars and conferences to corporations, government institutions, university students and professors, school

students, teachers and principals among other special interest groups. Dr. Collins said that vision is more important than sight since sight is a function of the eyes while vision is a function of the heart. And his vision for Guyana is to engineer a nation of leaders, making the citizen our most valuable natural resource. Upon approaching 4 years since his return, Dr. Collins is quickly on the verge of having conducted an astonishing 500 seminars inclusive of inspirational speaking engagements. Furthermore, upon his appointment as Global Representative for the Golden Rule International and Interfaith Peace-Building Initiative for Caribbean States and its Territories; World Peace Ambassador Dr. Clyde Rivers described “Dr. Astell Collins as a man of integrity that lives a lifestyle that exemplifies the Golden Rule, ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated.’ Ambassador Rivers is also the Founder and President of iChange Nations™ a professional institution that equips, mentors and trains highly esteemed individual who have a desire to change the world. It is a great honour to have him as a Representative of our World Peace Initiative because he will represent our movement well across the globe,” the Ambassador stated. This international platform focuses on establishing effective relationships to help people understand the value of life and basic human rights. Dr. Collins has since met with President

David Granger, and commits to continuing to do all he can in helping him to accomplish his vision of social cohesion and national unity. Collins had also met with former President Ramotar and pledged his contribution in advancing the nation through leadership development. H e h a s s e r v e d n a t i o n a l l y wi t h excellence almost every sphere of society including various government ministries, private companies, the military, police, fire service, medical practitioners, teachers, students, prisoners and prison officers. He believes that the nation would not manifest its collective greatness without first becoming one people in one nation with a shared destiny. In addition to serving the nation, to mark Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary and Jubilee celebrations, Dr. Collins, in his capacity as Chairman of the board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, has embarked on an initiative which seeks to provide repairs and minor improvements to the homes of 50 indigent citizens which includes the elderly, single parents and the differently abled.

to leave our country better than we found it. “This is the best legacy we can pass on to the next generation,” Collins said. Having just returned from yet another successful BD1 leadership tour of the UK, and meeting with Guyana’s High Commissioner, H.E. Hamley Case, Astell remains committed to servant leadership. As a result of his effectiveness, Astell has been invited to return to the UK, USA, the Caribbean and a number of African countries in addition to Australia and China. Even though it’s humbling to be in such demand both locally and internationally, Collins recognized that it wouldn’t be possible without the support of his gracious and supportive wife, Marcia Collins. While his son Azaniah remains his inspiration to be a better father, a better husband and an all-round better human being.

Astell is admired by many both locally and internationally as a statesman with significant presence. In Guyana, from the law enforcement officers to inmates; educators and students; to government institutions/organisations and private sector all believe that he and his revolutionary BD1 leadership seminars will ensure a brighter future for Guyana. Moreover, he believes that we have a moral responsibility

Sweat and Body Odor Text: Coretta Corbin-Rival

S

weating and body odor are a natural and healthy part of life. Heavy perspiration and body odor can occur when your body temperature rises due to exercise or hot conditions. You may also sweat when you are nervous, anxious or under stress. Sweat is important to help cool the body temperature when it gets too hot. This is the reason why some cultures believe that encouraging a person with a fever to sweat will help to break the fever. Sweat helps to maintain normal body temperature. Some people are more prone to excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis than others. Your body has two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine glands. The eccrine glands can be found on the surfaces of your body while the apocrine glands are found in areas like the groin and armpits. Sweat is odorless however, when combined with the natural bacteria found on your skin it may produce a bad odor. Ways in which you might reduce sweat and body odor are: 1) Daily showers: Use warm water and an antibacterial soap to scrub the bacteria off the surface of your skin and prevent bacteria buildup. If it is really hot, try taking more than one shower if possible or use wet wipes to freshen up during the day.

2) Wear clothes which allow proper ventilation or suite your activity: Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and wool are great because

34 | GEM 75, 2016

they allow your skin to breathe. When your skin is able to breathe, this helps to minimize the amount of perspiration produce. Recently, more athletic companies have taken steps to produce fabrics which help to draw or wick sweat away from the body as soon as it is produce. 3) A p p l y d e o d o r a n t a n d antiperspirants daily: Antiperspirants block the sweat glands which help reduce sweat. The acid found in deodorants on the other hand makes it difficult for bacteria to grow on the skin where it is applied. Shaving the hair in the armpits also helps sweat evaporate quickly and lessen contact with the bacteria on your skin. 4) Watch your diet: Caffeinated beverages, foods like ginger, garlic, onions and other spicy foods are believed to cause you to sweat excessively and to have stronger body odor than usual. Some foods also speed up metabolism, which causes body temperature to rise. Eliminating these foods from your diet may help lessen body odor and keep body temperature low. 5) Wash clothes more often: To reduce the embarrassment of sweat stains on the underarm of clothes, you should wash clothes soon after use. Wearing an undershirt can also be a good protector for clothes which helps to prevent the sweat from getting through to your clothes and staining the under arms.

Reversing the Hands of Time Ways to Add Years to Your Life Text: Coretta Corbin-Rival

F

or centuries, humans have searched for the fountain of youth. In 221-210 B.C for instance, the ruling Chinese Emperor thought he had found the miracle for eternal life and youthfulness when he consumed portions of quicksilver on a daily bases in his quest for the fountain of youth. In the past decade plastic surgery has become one of the flourishing businesses in North America and Europe. According to Deepak Chopra, holistic health practitioner, author and media personality, although we cannot live forever, “we can reset our biological clock by up to fifteen years younger than our chronological age.” Chopra further states that reversing our biological clock takes a total mind set.

Some ways in which you could add years to your life are: By first understanding that although aging is a natural part of life, research shows that skin aging can be accelerated twice as fast as our chronological aging process due to environmental factors like sunlight, smoking, pollution and unhealthy diet. David Leffel MD., Professor of Dermatology and Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine says that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the cause of up to 80 percent of wrinkles. It has been discovered that ultraviolet radiation is also the number one cause of skin cancer and it does not matter if you have dark or light complexion. So it is another reason why you should protect 38 | GEM 75, 2016

yourself as soon as you can and as much as you can from the sun and its harmful elements. Another skin-aging element which dermatologists warn that we should all be on the lookout for is free radicals, which are harmful chemicals that damage the skin. When the body is overrun by free radicals, this can lead to wrinkling of the skin and even cancerous or precancerous lesions. Free radicals are created from the food we eat. In his book, “Grow Young Live Longer: 10 Steps to Reverse Aging,” Chopra also recommends the daily practice of meditation or yoga to help reduce stress which ages the heart and causes tension throughout the body. Damage Control Your first line of defense against the damaging effects of sunlight’s radiation should be sun screen. Sunscreens with high Sun Protection Factors (SPF, at least 15 or higher) that protect you from both UVB and UVA rays are the best protection you could have. Some recommended skinprotection for your face which contain SPF to keep your skin looking firm and youthful are; Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion (has 15 SPF); Oil of Olay Complete UV Protection Moisture Lotion, and Clinique Turnaround Cream. The best way to fight free radicals is with Antioxidants like vitamin C and

E. Both vitamin C and E can be taken as supplements and applied topically through lotions. Many lotions like Palmer’s Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E added can also be used to help remove dark marks, age spots and blemish and to give the skin a smooth look. Lotions with vitamin C added to them help to rejuvenate the skin and prevent sagging. Doctor and TV personality, Dr. Oz recommends that you apply vitamin C daily to your face to help boost the collagen, elasticity and its anti-aging properties. The diet we consume does not only have a negative or positive impact on our biological system, but can damage our teeth as well, one of the first facial features seen by others. Years of smoking, consuming caffeinated beverages, eating foods like curry and acidic fruits can discolor or stain the teeth and age you. If you could, invest in bleaching your teeth which helps to add years to your life. Make sure the bleaching is done by a professional dentist instead of using over the counter teeth bleaching kits, which are pricey and usually do not work. The important thing to remember when it comes to preventing premature aging is to always use products that give you the most protection against the elements. The battle against premature aging should start from a young age and continue throughout the rest of your life. The sooner you start, the better it will be for you.

BEAUTY TIPS

How to Create

A SMOKY EYE This Season

E

Text: Reneé Chester

veryone loves a smoky eyeit’s an easy way to completely transform and glam up your look, while calling attention to the facial feature that most women say is their favorite.

can build a smoky look using a single shadow in a dark color. For example, a maroon tone (personal favorite choice). After you’ve primed your lids, pat this captivating color (or whatever color compliments you and your wardrobe selection) using a shadow brush and begin applying the color from the outer corner of your eye. Use the same brush to blend the shadow in a side-ways V-SHAPE, taking it into the crease and blend with a back and forth, windshield-wiper motion. Work a lighter/softer amount of the same color inwardly and cover the rest of the lids giving that 1 color a diffusing look. Do a smudge technique with your black eyeliner on the upper and lower lash-line, apply mascara and you’re out the door.

With all the lengthy tutorial videos and million-pan eyeshadow palettes out there, mastering the smoky eye can seem like such a challenge. ABSOLUTELY ANY FACE CAN ROCK A SMOKY EYE. It’s not just a simple way to take your face from day to night, but also a great way to make a killer first impression. This eye makeup look is one that fits into all occasions. A smoky eye done right can make you feel like a super model even when you’re just running around in jeans and a T-shirt. The great thing about the smoky eyes is that it doesn’t always have to be perfect. But watch out for some smoky eye pitfalls. Messy could very well be sexy, but it can also be a mess if not executed correctly. TI P S ON T H E SMO K Y E Y E TECHNIQUE FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Tis’ the season to be jolly… Certainly I won’t be the glam-less girl over there in the corner at some staff party, family gathering, friends social or any cocktail event for that matter this season without bringing my beat face to go with a gorgeous dress & date. (wink) So in order to execute ‘slayage’ in 40 | GEM 75, 2016

HD I’d like to give you my guide to the perfect smoky eye for your casual events this season. 1. Evaluate what your eye shape looks like. For round eyes, you want to avoid putting too much darkness in the middle of the eye, beneath the pupil. Instead, darken the outer edges to elongate the eye and make it appear more almond-shaped. 2. NOTE: Don’t let watery eyes ruin your look. To reduce tearing, inhale sharply through your nose a few times. 3. Don’t get all ‘gothic’ with it. Smoky eye doesn’t mean a black eye. Though many women seem to think that. So after applying black eyeliner I suggest using a brown so the effect won’t be too heavy or intimidating. THERE’S MORE THAN ONE TYPE OF SMOKY EYE.

Once you’ve nailed the basics of a simpler smoky eye technique, you can add more detail to your look for the next party.

4. T h e o n e t o n e s m o k y e y e : Especially for the first-timers, you

5. Prime lids! For this two-tone version you’ll want to start with

a dark shade (suggesting black or dark brown) and concentrate the color to the outer eyelid. Use a clean blending brush to feather the shadow outwards, softening the edges and sweeping the shade along the bottom lashes.

Now choose your second tone of eyeshadow. (suggesting gold, champagne or silver. Whichever compliments you and your wardrobe selection) With an eyeshadow bush, pick up your choice of shade and blend over the rest of the eyelid; which is from the inner tear duct, right into the starting point of the black. Have the gold/silver or champagne tone overlap into the black to create an ombre effect. For extra drama, use a black pencil to tighten the top and bottom rims with sever coats of mascara added to the lashes.

YOU ’ R E P R O B A B LY MO R E SEASONED BY NOW WITH THIS SMOKY EYE THING! SO LET’S ADD GLITZ & GLAM TO YOUR T H I R D C H R ISTMAS PA R T Y LOOK!

look calls for some false eyelashes. If you’re on #TEAMLUCKY and you have full and lengthy eyelashes then overdo-the-do with mascara!

6. To get even bolder eye makeup, with the expectation of stares from everyone amazed by your look, select a statement smokynot-so-smoky technique with a statement lid color and some statement GLITTER!

The entire eye crease is to be darker, placing more depth on the outer crease and less intensity on the inner crease. A tapered blending brush is the best choice for this step. Over the primed eyelids, from corner to corner, you can place silver (or gold) eyeshadow. Apply glitter! Your options for glitter application are of more than one. From a time-saving point of view I’d suggest using a glitter gel liner that compliments your choice of eyeshadow. This type of glitter glides on fast, neat and easy. Best thing about it, it does not flake into your eyes with much movement. It pretty much stays put for the duration of your makeup wear.

To complete the look, go for a black eyeliner wing effect. Definitely this

I wish you luck in executing these steps!

DINING

Condiments That Can I

Make You Sweat

t is no question that Guyanese are very creative people, so it is no surprise that we have extended this creativity to our foods. Through trial and error over many generations, some of the most delicious foods are part of our regular cuisine.

Sourie Achar Ingredients: Sourie, hot pepper, salt, garlic, water, chopped vegetables, vegetable oil, curry powder, lime juice and massala spice.

In this feature, we take a look at some of the hot home-made condiments in our diet. Guyanese were not satisfied enough to settle for the commonly used food complements like ketchup, black pepper, mustard and mayonnaise, salt and others, we had to come up with our own list.

Mustard Pepper Sauce Ingredients: Vinegar, mustard, hot peppers, salt, garlic, water and sodium benzoate

Our foreparents through their own genius ingenuity experimented with the myriad of locally grown spices, fruits and vegetables and came up with a number of must-haves for today’s dining tables. Pepper alone, which you will notice

is the common ingredient in our featured dishes, can be found in all regions of Guyana. There are at least nine popular varieties which are consumed locally and some exported to other countries. Some of the more familiar pepper types include bird, “bullnose” scotch bonnet, wiri wiri, Caribbean red, ball o’ fire, West Indian red, habanero and tiger teeth. They all range in intensity

from mild to the very hot. Due to the combination of fruits, vegetables, spices and other ingredients, condiments develop their own distinct character of look, smell and taste. And depending on the type of pepper and the quantity used, the resulting taste will vary from gentle to sizzling. Our advice to you is to tread with

caution this Christmas season as you sink your spoon into an appetizing bowl of one of these ‘bad boys’ on the dining table. Beware of the saying, “pepper burns three times”. Thanks to the hard working staff at GEM, many of these dishes were whipped up right in our kitchen and of course there were a lot of “oohing” and “aaah-ing” as the condiments were consumed afterwards.
