Take Good Care of Your Skin, Hair and Nails During the Winter Months by Michael Steppie, M.D.

T

he practice of dermatology involves improving and maintaining not only the appearance but also the health of your skin, hair, and nails. Perhaps you have noticed changes like these over the past few months:

comes dry, even itchy. A hot shower may seem a go-to respite for warmth, but prolonged heat can actually do more harm than good because it disrupts the skin barrier, which serves as physical protection and further dehydrates the skin.

• HEALTHY SKIN. As the humidity decreases in the winter months our skin be-

While they may seem tempting, quick fixes that address only the appearance of your skin and nails, ignoring underlying health factors, will only allow for further damage. For instance, hiding unsightly nail fungus beneath colorful nail polish or buying a harsh, drugstore shampoo based solely on the promises made in the packaging will simply mask or even exacerbate the issues. While your look is understandably important, your health is all the more critical. After all, you deserve more than just a makeover. You deserve a thorough audit and treatment of any and all health issues that may affect your look and your life. Ensure the health and vibrancy of your skin, hair and/or nails by scheduling a consultation with Associates in Dermatology. With 15 locations serving Central Florida, Associates in Dermatology accepts most health plans, and also offers cosmetic services including Botox®, fillers as well as laser treatments to visibly rejuvenate the skin. 5 Tips for Dealing with the Recent Traumatic Events any people are experiencing reactions that are out of the ordinary for them as a result of the recent traumas. Some of the more common reactions include: anxiety, withdrawal, grief, guilt, nightmares, intrusive images, fear, depression, change in appetite, or sleep disturbances. Here are five tips to help manage the stress: 1. Talk about it. By talking with others, you can relieve stress and realize that others share your feelings. 2. Take care of yourself. Rest, exercise, and eat properly. If you smoke or drink coffee, try to limit your intake since nicotine and caffeine can exasperate stress. 3. Find time for activities you enjoy. Read a book, go for a walk, or do something else you enjoy. These healthy activities can get your mind off the disaster and keep stress in check. 4. Avoid drugs and excessive drinking. Drugs and alcohol may temporarily

seem to remove stress, but in the long run they will only make it worse. 5. Ask for help when you need it. If your feelings do not go away or are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function in daily life – seek help from a counselor. You could also join a support group. Don’t try to cope alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. The Mental Health Association of Central Florida is now offering free counseling for anyone impacted in any way as a result of the recent tragedies in our community. veryone knows aerobic exercise gets the heart pumping, and lifting weights keeps muscles strong. But when it comes to keeping the brain healthy, most people are unsure what to do. As you age, brain health and maintaining memory functions becomes a top concern. These issues may begin sooner than you think. “We tend to think about memory decline as an older person’s issue, but that’s not the case at all,” says Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine. “There was a study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal that examined cognitive function in people age 45 to 70. The researchers did not expect it, but they found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-year-old participants as well as the older participants.” She notes there are two basic pathological processes that cause degeneration of the brain: oxidative stress and inflammation. The standard American diet and lifestyle contribute to those processes. So, who is this really an issue for? Men and women of all ages.

No matter your age, you can take charge of your brain health by following these five smart steps from Dr. Shunney: 1 I Healthy Eating “A Mediterraneantype diet that focuses on whole foods, good fats and foods high in antioxidants is a great place to start,” says Dr. Shunney. She encourages her patients to focus on getting omega3 fats from fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. She also recommends increasing fruits (especially berries) and beans (they are packed with antioxidants). What’s more, research shows a little cocoa, coffee and red wine can act as antioxidants and are beneficial in low to moderate amounts. 2 I Supplements In addition to a quality multivitamin, Dr. Shunney recommends an omega-3 supplement. “Getting enough omega-3s is

Especially in older people, getting enough suppliments can keep their brains healthy.

one of the most important measures we can take,” she says. “DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is the dominant omega-3 in the brain. Just like we need to make sure babies have enough DHA to grow their brain, we need to make sure older people get enough DHA to keep their brains healthy.” She suggests Omega Memory by Nordic Naturals. It’s a DHA-dominant omega-3 formula that also includes other brain-healthy ingredients: curcumin, phosphatidylcholine and huperzine A. Learn more at www.nordicnaturals.com.

Make memories and support brain health by spending time with friends and family.

4 I Thinking Activities “I recommend anything that keeps your mind working,” says Dr. Shunney. “Activities that require things to be arranged or

and get up around the same time every morning.”

5 I Socialize “Social isolation has been linked with cognitive decline,” says Dr. Shunney. “In one study, people who were lonely experienced cognitive decline at a 20 percent faster rate than people who were not lonely.” Make time to take a foreign language class, join a Toastmaster’s Club, or take a watercolor class – anything that connects you regularly to other people.

puzzles that have to be put together. Crossword puzzles, word games and board games are all great.” She also notes some activities to avoid: “It’s important to limit certain activities. The constant scanning of social media and newsfeeds eliminates creativity and keeps us on edge. Limit the time you spend doing that and instead do things that cause you to explore and think, and put ideas together on your own.”

3 I Regular Sleep Poor sleep is a risk factor for cognitive decline. “Studies show both sleep deprivation and sleeping too much impact cognitive performance,” Dr. Shunney says. “A good goal is to go to bed around the same time each night, sleep for 7-8 hours,

inimalism is a growing trend in today’s world of fashion. While pom-poms and glitter can be exciting, sometimes you need a detox from all the frills. My current favorite minimalist piece is this White Shirt-Dress, by Whoosh. Whoosh is a brand based out of Tel Aviv that specializes in simple and beautiful designs. Each piece is handmade with the utmost care and quality. Because of the classic and durable construction of this dress, I know that it will be a wardrobe staple for years to come. Another minimalist piece that I’ve been obsessing over is this beautiful Blush A-line Dress, also by Whoosh. Speaking of blush, this color has taken aplomb the fashion industry. From Roberto Cavalli to Stella McCartney, this rose quartz tone is a hot trend. Besides its stylish design, my favorite thing about this dress is that it is versatile – it can be paired with a baseball cap and sneakers for a sporty-casual look, or with heels and pearls for cocktail hour.

Fiorella Preparatory School Offers a Unique Learning Experience

WINTER 2017

16

ecently, Fiorella Preparatory School in Metrowest held its grand opening, and a diverse group of parents, friends and neighbors joined the celebration. School Director Cecilia Reddy was delighted to see such a warm reception for this special occasion, and thanked everyone for their support. Fiorella Preparatory School offers a unique service to the community, providing adequate care and education to infants from 12 weeks to age 5. This is considered the most important age to instill a foundation for learning and positive behavioral development. The curriculum combines all the fundamentals that children need during the most crucial neurological stage of their lives, endowing them with the necessary thinking and life skills to lead a productive life, and excel as young leaders of tomorrow. Fiorella Preparatory School provides affordable educational excellence, firstclass caregiving, a broad range of integrated programs, innovative learning approaches with a nurturing touch to spur development and growth of each student’s talents to their full potential. Learning through visible thinking is a new concept whereby students see their thought process through various documentations, including graphs and other forms of visual information. The school uses the Edu1st model, which is rich in content but flexible enough to give children autonomy and the liberty to lead their own learning. This is accomplished in a developmentally appropriate environment for learning while empowering families to participate in, and enhance their children’s education. Fiorella Preparatory School also offers the Hands on Bible curriculum within the student’s weekly schedule to create an environment that helps children under-

stand the story of God, and propel them forward in their journey of faith. The school has a Spanish-led Academic program every Thursday and Friday. Children can enjoy the playground facility which provides the opportunity for them to exercise in a safe environment with age-appropriate games and activities. Another important factor at Fiorella Preparatory School is the menu. Nutritious meals are prepared daily, and most are organic and gluten-free. Parents can

watch their children through each new milestone, skill and activity right from their cellphone, tablet or computer with PB&J TV, a webcasting program available for a low weekly fee. Fiorella Preparatory School is located at 6965 Piazza Grande Avenue, Unit 101102 Orlando, FL 32835. School Hours: 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. For a guided tour of the school or for more information, call 407-745-5732. Visit www.fiorellaprep school.org.

Floor Plan When designing your closet, it is easy to forget important features. That’s why it’s helpful to start with a blueprint that displays every element of your space. A tool such as the Wellborn Cabinet Closets Planning Guide takes you step-by-step to lay out your floor plan, figure out how much space is needed and decide what accessories to add. The sketch helps you to consider details like outlets, ceiling heights, doors and laundry units, which are easily overlooked when designing. Accessory Options A closet makeover is meant to transform your cluttered storage space into an organized room where it’s easy to store, hang and hold your personal items. As you explore the accessories and options you will integrate into your design, keep convenience in mind. For example, tilt-out hampers from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. are ideal for storing your dirty clothes instead of leaving them strewn across the bedroom floor. Clever solutions like wardrobe tubes can be installed between the walls to hold your dresses, pants and shirts. For some shine and texture, look at options such as metal accessories to keep your ties color coordinated. Don’t forget to add small shelves to keep your shoes from cluttering the floor.

messy heap. To ensure you can always find the clothing you need, create a hanging system that works for you, such as hanging items according to the color or weight, or both. When it comes to shoe-cubbies mounted on the wall, place all your boots, loafers, heels and sandals together to keep them off the floor, and give you a perspective of each type of footwear you own. Maintain Cleanliness and Organization After the organizing work is done, the key is maintaining this project you worked so hard to complete. Set aside a couple of days a week to walk into your closet, not to pick out a trendy outfit to wear, but to eliminate the clutter and dust. Since your wardrobe is not all worn in one day, dust builds up and spreads throughout your shoes, hats, purses and clothes. Run a duster through your closet at least twice a week to maintain the dust-free zone. The other BEFORE issue will be keeping clothes on their hangers. When trying on outfits, avoid the temptation to toss discarded items on the floor and instead, put them back on the hanger in the correct section of the closet. With a little self-motivation, the organized closet can remain as neat and clean as it started. Organization There’s no right or wrong when it comes to storing clothing, but the majority of people choose to hang shirts on the top closet rod and jeans and shorts on the bottom rack.
