TEAM BEACH

RAQUEL BARNARD, Sophomore Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Hometown: Simi Valley, CA
I love listening to the sound of the waves and relaxing by lounging on the beach or tiring myself out by surfing.
Top Beach Destinations 1. Faria Beach: Located in Ventura, 40 minutes from campus. It’s a lesser known beach so it’s not so crowded—a great place to catch waves and learn to surf! 2. Sycamore Cove: Located in Malibu, 30 minutes from campus. The fire pits are close to the shore. I have fond memories of bundling up to watch the sunset, having potluck dinners, and making s’mores with friends. This beach also has campsites.
3. Point Dume State Beach: Located in Malibu, 30 minutes from campus. I went rock climbing here with Cal Lutheran’s Adventure Club and had an amazing morning. Favorite Beach Activities • Surfing. The main reason that I go to the beach! I can forget about anything stressing me and get a good workout. It’s doubly good at helping a person unwind. • Bonfires with Friends. After you’re full of s’mores and your fire burns out, you can lay on the beach and stargaze.

TEAM MOUNTAIN
LUKAS SWIDLER, Junior Major: Interdisciplinary Degree with Emphasis in Education, Exercise Science and Philosophy Hometown: San Jose, CA
It’s quite humbling to be surrounded by high cliffs, tall trees and beautiful surroundings. It brings me peace on days I’m stressed and frees my soul when life feels like a mess.

Top Mountain Destinations 1. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park: Located in Agua Dulce, about an hour from campus. I really like this place because of the rock formations—it looks like you’re on another planet. This park has been featured in films like Holes to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and several Star Trek episodes. There aren’t any designated trails but the open space acts like a giant playground. 2. Whiteface: Located in Simi Valley, 30 minutes from campus. The hike isn’t very long, but it’s steep and kind of a local secret. Once on top of the mountain, you can see the whole Conejo Valley. I recommend this hike right before sunset—the view is breathtaking. Favorite Mountains Activities • Mountain Biking • Hiking with my Puppy • Rock Climbing I enjoy being in nature as well as getting a good workout in, and all of these activities involve a fair amount of exercise. I personally don’t like doing cardio in a gym so any chance I get to exercise outside, I take it.

3. Rancho Sierra Vista: Located in Newbury Park, 15 minutes from campus. This park has trails ranging from easy loops to strenuous out and backs, including a wonderful out and back that takes you from Newbury Park to Malibu. Make a reservation at Sycamore Canyon Beach, ride your bike down the incline, and stay at the beach for the night.

ALL-AMERICANS MEET TWO SCHOLAR ATHLETES WHO EARNED TOP NATIONAL HONORS IN THEIR SPORT AT CAL LUTHERAN—AS FRESHMEN! FRESHMEN
Ben helped the Kingsmen earn 16 wins, the highest in program history. “I love water polo because it’s aggressive and highly competitive. I always loved the strategy part of it. At the age of 10, a friend’s dad saw I was good at flag football and asked if I wanted to play water polo at the San Diego Shores Water Polo Club. I gave it a try, and ever since then, I played year round and never missed a season.”

Some of his other stats. • All-SCIAC First Team • Led the team with 57 steals and 36 assists (5th and 3rd best in program history, respectively)
Highlights of first season. • Being selected as one of two freshmen for the Connecticut travel team. • Achieving a starting spot in the middle of the season. • Playing in the SCIAC semifinals with my team.

Major: Exercise Science, Emphasis in Physical Education and Pedagogy Hometown: Bakersfield, CA
* Named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
Maci helped the Regals earn an at-large berth to the 2018 NCAA Championship. “I love how fast paced the game of volleyball is. It’s never boring to me. I used to play softball, but eventually burnt out on it. I started playing volleyball and loved every second of it! The fact that the game is constantly changing and is so upbeat is what originally drew me to it.”

“The Public Price Promise scholarship has allowed me to continue my education as a transfer student. I chose Cal Lutheran over larger public schools I got accepted into because of the small class size. Students and professors can participate in the learning process rather than sitting in on large lectures. I enjoy the opportunity to get to know my classmates and professors.”
ANNALISE GOERING, Junior Major: Business Administration, Emphasis in Economics Hometown: Santa Ynez, CA
CAROLINA GROFF HINOJOSA, Freshman PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

Favorite Non-Academic College Activities • Playing Tennis. Being on the court gives me a way to release my stress and makes me a more competitive and hard-working person. • Spending Time with Friends. Cal Lutheran has really made me more social and gives me many opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. • Reading. XAVIER F. REYNOSO, Freshman VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLAR

Majors: Theatre Arts (Musical Theatre Emphasis) and Biology Activities: Theatre, Cross Country, Track and Field, Cal Lutheran Choir, Presidential Host Hometown: Claremont, CA
It has been a real honor to be selected as a Presidential Scholar because all of my achievements throughout my academic career have been recognized and rewarded. Thanks to the Presidential Scholarship, I am able to obtain a great education without having to put my family or myself through a financial hardship. It also gives me the opportunity to get involved in sports and other on-campus activities I wouldn’t have had the time to do without the scholarship. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ART (VAPA) SCHOLARSHIP Awarded by audition to freshmen and transfer students with exceptional creative talent in music, theatre arts and visual arts. • Scholarship applications are due February 1 (Feb. 15 for transfers). up to $30,000 a year
Favorite Non-Academic College Activities • Going to Improv Shows. They work as a great study break and are a chance to just relax and have a good laugh with some friends. • Pop-up Archery Range. It’s always a fun activity to do between classes when Student Life sets this up in Kingsmen Park. • Halloween Haunted House in the Student Union. They do a good job of giving us quite a scare!

When it came down to deciding what college I was going to attend, it was between Cal Lutheran and one other school. Cal Lutheran was my first choice. However, it was a little out of my price range. When I was awarded the VAPA scholarship, it changed everything for me and made it possible to attend.
