1) Breaking Barriers – Long before Annika Sorenstam competed in the 2003 Bank of America Colonial, Babe Zaharias became the first – and only – female golfer to make the cut at a PGA TOUR event, shooting 76 and 81 during the first two rounds of the 1945 Los Angeles Open. 2) Break Needed – One of the world’s most popular actors, Samuel L. Jackson, is also an avid golfer. In fact, the star of flicks like “Pulp Fiction” and “Django Unchained,” has a contract clause to play golf twice a week whenever he films movies. 3) Fortune Teller? – Prior to the 1957 Masters, Doug Ford not only predicted his victory, but his winning score of 283 as well. Sure enough, Ford’s projections came true, as he was fitted for his only green jacket. Perhaps Ford is a distant cousin of Nostradamus? 4) Nearly Impossible – Is there anything that matches the feeling one has when they make a hole-in-one? How about two in one round? Recently, Oakland University’s Kassandra Komma did just that, recording two ones on her scorecard in nine holes. But, the odds are incredibly low, at one in 64 million! 5) Splash! – Every year, roughly 125,000 balls are hit into the water surrounding TPC Sawgrass’ world-renowned island green 17th hole. During the 2013 Players Championship, 44 balls were lost. But two errant shots received more media coverage than any other. Attempting to capture his second Players Championship, Sergio Garcia carded an untimely quadruple bogey seven at the 17th on Sunday, losing two balls – and the tournament – in the process. 6) Righty Tighty, Lefty Lucy – He may be the most famous left-handed golfer of all-time, but four-time major champion Phil Mickelson is naturally right-handed. As a youngster, he mirrored his father’s swing and enjoyed so much success that he never needed right-handed clubs. 7) Grand Finale – The very first nationally-televised golf tournament, the 1953 World Championship of Golf, featured an incredible finish from Lew (Continued on page 9)

Before Tiger Woods became known in the golf world, there wasn’t much emphasis placed on fitness for golfers. But along comes Tiger, a golfer with long, lean muscles, core strength, incredible flexibility and balance for golfers to start taking notice. Tiger is religious about fitness and incorporates Pilates into his exercise regime. Now Pilates has become recognized in golf as a must to improve your game and prolong your career. The acceptance has been such that the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens recently announced that it has partnered with All-American Pilates to open the PGA Pilates studio.

Pilates is going to add five, six, seven ... years to my career.” It is said that the golf swing is a little one-sided, which can create imbalance in the body. Pilates helps to balance out the body against the forces of the swing. It helps to create less torque in the spine because you learn to swing from your center and not from your limbs. Mediate gives Pilates credit for major improvements in his game. He used to avoid putting, and now he’s a putting machine.

Rocco Mediate, another professional golfer has had much to say about Pilates after having major back surgery. Mediate just wasn’t the same. He couldn’t bend over for long periods of time to practice his putting, and his back always went out after lengthy plane trips. After just a week of starting Pilates, he was turned around, and after two weeks he said he felt like he’d never felt before. Mediate has since got rid of his weights and has completely outfitted his workout room with Pilates equipment. “Pilates never compromises your back,” he says. “I’ve got more motion in my shoulders, midsection and legs. I can repeat my basic swing more often.

Worsham. Needing a birdie for a playoff with Chandler Harper, Worsham holed out for eagle from 104 yards on the 72nd hole to defeat Harper by one shot. 8) Mighty Condor – As unlikely as a hole-in-one is on a par-three, imagine making one on a par-five. This highly unusual shot, informally known as a condor, has only been verified four times! 9) Rain or Shine…and Snow – Dwight Eisenhower. John F. Kennedy. Barack Obama. These are just a few of the presidents associated with golf. But Woodrow Wilson is often overlooked. An avid golfer, he was so dedicated to the game that he even played in the snow – using black golf balls! 10) Moonwalking – To this day, golf is one of only two sports, along with the javelin throw, to have ever been played on the moon. Back on February 6, 1971, Apollo 14 member Alan Shepard hit a ball with a six-iron, swinging one-handed as a result of his pressure suit. 11) The Power of Golf – To millions, she is beloved for her powerful voice, releasing hits like “The Power of Love.” But singer Celine Dion is also a golf fanatic and owns a course, Terrebonne, Quebec’s Le Mirage Golf Club. 12) Age is Just a Number – You have heard the stories before. Perhaps you have even witnessed them yourself. A 90-year-old man breaks 90 in consecutive rounds. A lifelong golfer shoots 66 on her 66th birthday. But nothing compares to the feats of Kermit Dannehl, who has shot an astonishing 1,138 rounds at or below his age! Clearly, the old adage still applies – age really is just a number. 13) Illegal – Starting in 1457, golf was banned throughout Scotland by the nation’s Parliament, which believed it interfered with residents’ military training. This ban was repeated twice more, in 1471 and 1491. Nearly 300 years later, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews was founded. 14) Bird…ie – While playing in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1889, Ab Smith hit a shot he defined as a “bird of a shot.” His description ultimately led to one of the

game’s most popular terms, which golfers regularly aim for – “birdie.” 15) Tees…Who Needs ’em? – Long before the advent of tees, golfers played off of hand-built sand piles. That all changed, of course, when tees were invented, gaining popularity during the 1920s. 16) Walk It Off – If you choose to walk, rather than ride 18 holes, you will not only walk roughly four miles, but also burn 2,000 calories. To compare, golfers that ride carts burn about 1,300 calories. 17) Bring Your Benjamins – Charging $500 for an 18-hole round, Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek Golf Course is the United States’ most expensive public course. Known for its celebrity sightings, the Tom Fazio-design is regularly ranked as one of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. 18) Speed Round – Alice Miller presently holds the LPGA Tour’s record for fastest round, completing 18 holes in one hour, 26 minutes, and 44 seconds. The record was established during the final round of the 1997 Welch’s/Circle K Championship. 19) A True Golf Fanatic – From January 1 to December 31, 2010, Richard Lewis set the all-time record for the most holes of golf played in one year – 11,000! Remarkably, he played every single hole at Irving, Texas’ Four Seasons Resort and Club. 20) Here’s Johnny! – Known worldwide as Johnny Carson’s lovable sidekick, Ed McMahon also hosted a PGA TOUR tournament from 1975 to 1979. The Ed McMahon – Jaycees Quad Cities Open, today’s John Deere Classic, attracted celebrities like Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope. 21) Turkey and Cattle – In the midst of World War II, Augusta National Golf Club closed for three years, and cattle and turkey were raised on the grounds to support the war effort. The Masters was not contested again until 1946. That year, Herman Keiser won his only major championship, defeating Ben Hogan by one shot.

WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT: The Law of Golf

Law 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer, and eventually, a lifetime.

Law 10: Sand is alive. If it isn’t, how do you explain the way it works against you?

Law 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number you tell about the former.

Law 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent – or some similar combination.

Law 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. Law 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. Law 5: No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant “You looked up,” or invoke the wrath of the universe. Law 6: The higher a golfer’s handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. Law 7: Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire. Law 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. Law 9: Palm trees eat golf balls.

Law 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse.

Law 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed. Law 14: Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (See Law 3). Law 15: A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. Law 16: “Nice Lag” can usually be translated to “lousy putt.” Similarly, “tough break” can usually be translated “way to miss an easy one, sucker.” Law 17: The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you. Law 18: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. Law 19: Golf should be given up at least twice per month. Law 20: All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset.

Rory McIlroy Biography

According to Rory McIlory’s official bio, he hit a 40-yard drive when he was two years old. It was all up from there. His first hole-inone happened at age nine. As a youth in Northern Ireland, McIlroy worked on his game with Hollywood Golf Club pro Michael Bannon. And things happened quickly for McIlroy in his teens. He played for Europe in the 2004 Junior Ryder Cup. In 2005, he became the youngest-ever winner of the West of Ireland Championship and of the Irish Close Championships. And in 2006 he repeated as champion in both. McIlroy played in his first pro tournament at the 2005 British Masters, as a 16-yearold. In 2006, he won the European Amateur Championship. But 2007 is when McIlroy started to come to the attention of the worldwide golf audience. That year, he reached No. 1 in the world amateur rankings and played on the GB&I team in the Walker Cup. It was what he was doing in pro tournaments, however, that turned heads. McIlroy made his first cut in a pro tournament at the 2007 Dubai Desert Classic, at age 17. A couple months later, after turning 18, he was among the first-round leaders at the British Open.He made the cut and was low amateur. McIlroy turned pro on Sept. 18, 2007, and his first event as a pro was the British Masters. In his second tournament, the Dunhill Links Championship, McIlroy finished third, ensuring himself a place on the European Tour for the following season.

16

In 2009, McIlroy, age 20, earned his first win on the European Tour at the Dubai Desert Classic. And at the 2010 Quail Hollow Championship, McIlroy closed with a 62 for his first USPGA victory. He was a few days shy of his 21st birthday, and he joined Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Seve Ballesteros as the only golfers since 1970 to win on the USPGA before turning 21. McIlroy appeared on his way to his first major championship at the 2011 Masters, taking a 4-stroke lead into the final round. However, he suffered a major meltdown in the final round, carding an 80 and falling outside the Top 10. He didn’t have to wait long to pick up that first major, though. A couple months later at the 2011 U.S. Open, McIlroy turned in one of the most dominating performances in major championship history, shattering the tournament scoring record and winning by eight strokes. In March 2012, McIlroy first reached No. 1 in the world golf rankings when he won the PGA Tour Honda Classic. Several months later, McIlroy collected major title No. 2, winning the 2012 PGA Championship. At the PGA, McIlroy set a new tournament record for margin of victory, winning by eight strokes.

One Important Trait Working with instructors for many years, I have discovered one important trait that they all have in common that you do not see with the average golf teacher. This one thing goes right to the heart of how human beings learn physical motion. For the sake of space and your boredom, I won’t go deep into motor skill learning. The simplest way to understand how we learn motion is to think of how you learned to eat, drive or brush your teeth. Motor skill learning in its most basic form is repetitive motion that is learned and captured in the nerves that connect the brain to the muscles. Having spent most of the last twenty years helping golf professionals learn to improve their teaching skills, the one thing I have noticed more than any other shortcoming is the 24

lack of understanding how the dynamic of motor skill learning works. So, what is this one trait? Besides the obvious, which is the ability to communicate well, the one trait is the understanding that human beings learn from feel. Successful instructors not only verbally explain the motion, but they actually interact with the student by helping them physically make the motion. New or inexperienced instructors spend the majority or even all of their instruction time verbally teaching the student. While all of us that teach the game have the desire to help people play better golf, we need to understand better how humans learn. Therefore, it is not a lack of caring or effort on the part of teacher. It is simply a lack of education. Either through experience, education or even trial and error, successful instructors understand what the famous instructor Gary Wiren said forty years ago: “A golfer needs to clearly feel and understand what he or she is trying to do. Even more simply put, golf is a game of feel. “

Club Service Directory 2019

Our main purpose as golf instructors trying to help our students improve is to teach what the motion should feel like. The only truly effective way to do that is to physically move them or the club while attached to them. Teach feel. Some of us can watch and imitate. A very, very small percentage can read it and then translate the written word into motion. But the vast majority of us need to be taught how the correct motion feels. Watching instructors attempting to help their students, I see them way too frequently attempt to talk their students into a better motion, commanding verbally, “Don’t do this or don’t do that.” Back to our basic motor skill learning. As we make a movement, the human brain is wired to learn motion so as to repeat that motion eventually on a subconscious level. Think of having to learn to use your fork and spoon from the beginning every time you ate a meal. That would make for some long dinners. Try this simple motion. Take your hand from a positon of resting it on a table and use your index finger to touch the tip of your nose. This simple motion has six million possible

motion variances; that’s correct, six million. Therefore, one aspect of simple survival for us is our ability to learn motion. Next time you are giving a lesson, ask yourself, “How much am I talking and not showing?” Understandably, some are apprehensive to physically help their students. That is completely understandable. But an important step of improving your instruction is to get over that fear and just do it. They can’t release the energy of the club head through impact? They have never felt their hands stay solid through impact on a chip or putt? Help them swing the club slowly through impact, teaching them to feel the correct movement. Trust me, the reward and response you get from your students from teaching feel will surprise you.
