Britain and the sea By Martina Santambrogio

Britain is an island and British people are always close to the sea. In fact, they are never more than 119 km. from it. The sea is an important part of Britain’s industry.

Leisure and tourism Lots of British people go abroad for their holidays, but 50% of British people have their holidays in Britain. British people love the seaside, and the weather isn’t always cold and wet. The south of England and Wales can be hot and sunny, especially from June to August. Cornwall is a very popular destination. It’s in the south-west of Britain. It has got some great beaches for surfing, and Newquay is Britain’s surfing

capital. Blackpool, in the north-west of England, is very popular, too. It’s a large seaside resort and its famous amusement parks. There are hundreds of small islands around Britain and many of these are popular holiday destinations. The Orkney islands are a group of 70 islands near the northeast of Scotland. Tourists visit the Orkney islands to see the wild natural landscape and famous prehistoric monuments. The Scilly isles, near Cornwell, are also popular for holidays. They have a worm climate all year and are famous for their tropical plants. Transport Britain has a lot of airports, but some of Britain’s major cities, like Bristol, Cardiff and Glasgow, are also ports. You can travel by ferry from Liverpool to Ireland, from Harwich to Holland, and from many different ports to France. The English Chanel is the sea between England and France. It is only 34 km. from Dover, in south-east England, to Calais, in the north of France. You can also travel to France by train, in a tunnel under the sea. This journey is only 30 minutes.

Fishing The North Sea, to the east of Britain, is the traditional location for the British fishing industry, but this is changing. There aren’t many fish there now, and fishermen in this area are worried about the future. In the south, things are different.

Newlyn, in Cornwall, has

the largest number of fishing boats in Britain. The water in the south is warm. This means you can find many different types of fish there. Fishermen in Cornwall sell their fish to shops and restaurants in the UK and abroad. They are optimistic about the future.

L'Opera dei Pupi, the puppet theatre emerged in Sicily in the 19th century and enjoyed great success among the popular classes. The puppeteers related stories based on medieval chivalric literature and Italian poems of the Renaissance as well as on the lives of saints and notorious bandits. The dialogues were improvised by the puppeteers.

The 2 main puppet schools in Sicily, Palermo and Catania were known principally for the size and shape of their puppets and for their stage techniques and colourful landscape backdrops. The theatres were mainly family-run businesses passed down from generation to generation. However, the carving, painting, and fabrication of the very sophisticated puppets were done by specialised craftspeople employing traditional methods and techniques.

he puppet shows were spread over several evenings and provided opportunities for the different social classes to go out and chat about everyday matters in the community. This kind of theatre reflected the Sicilians' feeling of belonging and their awareness of a common identity. Unfortunately, the economic boom of the 1950s had a considerable effect on this art form and threatened it to its very foundations. Similar theatres in Italy disappeared at the same time only to reappear 20 years later.

L'Opera dei Pupi is therefore the only example of an uninterrupted tradition of this kind of theatre. Today, technical progress, in particular the television, has turned many Sicilians away from these performances. Economic difficulties have also affected this traditional theatre form since many puppeteers can no longer make a living from their art. Tourism has also caused a decline in the quality of performances which were previously aimed at local audiences.

Plans are being made to organise training workshops for young puppeteers and festival awards for best troupes. National and international performances are also foreseen with the setting up of a school of puppetery to safeguard the future of L'Opera dei Pupi.

And cheese if you like. Italy is also famous for its sweets like tiramisu’, and in Christmas time are so famous, pandoro, panettone and torrone. I really like all but I love so much torrone.

Portugal traditional food is Stitched Portuguese. Its ingredients are beef; chicken; pork leg and entrecote; ham; chorizo; sausage; becon; fresh orelheira and smoked; Portuguese kale (bunch) or heart; carrots, potatoes, turnips; salt and oil. I love role de carne egg; salt and pepper .; tablespoons of breadcrumbs; slices of ham; slices of cheese; carrot, grated; roll of puff pastry ready to use. This is my favorite food.

There are two traditional dishes in Spain: paella and tortilla.

Paella ingredients are: rice, meat/fish, tomatoes, salt and pepprs. If you want you can also add green peas. Tortilla ingredients are: potatoes, mayonnaise, eggs and oil. Note: the mayonnaise is optional. I love eating specially the tortilla made by my mother because is the best one in the whole world with a cold and fresh Coca-Cola. It tastes delicious when it melts in your mouth and you swallow it after a moment of pleasure.

Basketball Basketball is a team sport invented in 1891 by the Canadian physical education teacher James Naismith. It is played by two teams of 5 players, who aim to pass the ball in a basket placed at the ends of the court. The baskets are placed at a height of 3 meters and 5 centimeters. Players can walk on the field since they hit the ball against the ground at each step.

Basketball in Spain is similar to how it is organized in other European countries and generally in FIBA members, and it´s quite different from the system used in the U.S. NBA. The organization of basketball in Spain is similar to football, in the sense that there is a league of professional clubs and a Federation which includes all other club competitions or less fully professionalized amateurs and also the category of training of young players. The Basketball Clubs Association (ACB) organize the league with the same name, composed by 18 teams with the greatest potential. Every year, the last two of the league standing down to division LEB, the ACB, therefore, differs from the NBA in many ways and among them may loose the category. The LEB is organized by the Spanish Basketball Federation.
