Be proactive, do something constantly to become better at it and it will develop into your passion.

WChui ong Ling Feature Interview

Creating Your Passion In her 19 years spent in Malaysia, Wong Chui Ling has reached out to the hearts and minds of countless thousands as the co-anchor of Melody FM’s breakfast show, and many other popular infotainment programs on TV. She was one of the few hosts who talked about topics which really mattered, and played her part in educating the public about current affairs such as education and property investment. Her regular appearance in the media has made her some somewhat of a household name, and her knowledge of the entertainment industry has naturally led her to the creation of her very own boutique media and production agency, aW Communications. CloudHAX took the opportunity to talk about her challenging career, on how she came to discover and tread her own path.

Great aspirations Chui Ling grew up in Hong Kong, during a time when many youngsters aspired for a degree in Business Administration. It was then that Hong Kong was setting itself up as an important financial hub. She remembered spending two insufferable weeks in marketing classes which did not interest her in the slightest. She then promptly knocked on the science faculty’s door asking to switch majors. Eventually, she graduated from HKUST majoring in Genetics Engineering. With a degree in hand, she had a lofty plan to discover and register a really important patent, sell it and retire before 30. Reality and her journeys have led her elsewhere, and she made the decision to go traveling around Asia, sating her natural curiosity to see more of the world we live in.

Making Malaysia her home Malaysia was the second stop of her trip, and she fell in love with the warm and friendly Malaysian hospitality. Chui Ling felt suffocated in Hong Kong; she felt little room and opportunity for her to develop

her talents on the island. In Malaysia however, Chui Ling saw the space and naturally grasped at opportunities which allowed her to pursue a career within the entertainment industry. As a science grad with no experience, she was thankful for the jobs she worked on as it afforded her an opportunity to hone her skills and learn the ropes of the industry.

Immersion of skill and will The years she spent in scientific studies has trained her to be analytical in thought. It is a skill that she eventually transferred to all aspects of her life, most notably her career. She knew she had a deep passion for the entertainment industry, and simply dove head-in. She learned the ins and outs of the industry, from video production to script writing. Her analytical mind was what allowed her to see beyond the surface and come up with innovative solutions on top of creative directions.

Still finding your passion? Just create it. It might come as a surprise, but Chui Ling was never one to particularly enjoy public

speaking in her youth. Yet, she was often handpicked by teachers for recitation competitions in high school. Other kids had the freedom of playing hide and seek, but she spent the time practicing recitations. Little did she know, that she was receiving training for her future career – that she would someday make something out of her trained vocals, and touch the hearts and minds of countless Malaysians. As a budding entertainer more than a decade ago, she was very avid in exploring new boundaries when working in the entertainment industry. Chui Ling grasped at every opportunity to learn new things; when the set had no script – she was the scriptwriter; director on MC – she was ready to step up to the plate. Chui Ling believes constant exposure to something makes you good at it; and that solicits good feedback from those around you. As you improve on your trade day by day, it will slowly become your passion. There is nothing wrong with finding your passions, it’s just that time is short, and a more proactive approach is to create them.

Leading experts Over the many years she spent in Malaysia, Chui Ling has built up a sterling reputation for her quick wit and exceptional sense, having worked closely with the Astro Pageant committee for many years. She started off as host of the Astro Pageant competition, later engaged by the committee to train the pageant girls leading up to the event. Eventually, she was invited to act as head judge for the event due to her vast experience with 16 years in the industry and ultimately – her enigmatic charisma. In the school, Chui Ling gives instruction to students on the art of communication, where she shares her considerable insight in communications, helping students deliver impactful speeches and to communicate effectively. Datin Winnie Loo is better known as the founder of A Cut Above, Malaysia’s leading group of hair salons. She is one of the most authoritative speakers on public relations and etiquette matters. Winnie’s passion lies in people empowerment, where she hopes to motivate and inspire others into action with her very own unexpected successes. The Datin and Chui Ling also happen to be the oldest of friends, having known each other since 19 years ago when Chui Ling first came to Malaysia. Steve Wee is the third founder of the school, and he is a man that can be described as a proper force of nature in personal branding, as he founded one of Asia’s leading personal branding agencies – Brand Yourself. Known for his unique and uplifting coaching methodologies, Steve

had successfully inspired and instructed many top executives and leaders in the business world to carry themselves with poise and grace, even in adversity.

Why is soft skills important? In certain fields, soft skills are considered to be even more important than hard technical skills; one such field is the legal profession. People often find it hard to describe people with superior soft skills, and chalking it up to simply, "they deal with people better". But for Chui Ling, possessing soft skills does not stop at simply speaking well or knowing what you're talking about. It is important for one to be "likable" in today's society in order to make available certain opportunities that would remain hidden and obscured otherwise. These opportunities are hiding in plain sight, and being able to build rapport quickly would certainly go a long way towards unlocking them. As part of a regimen towards building a well-rounded individual, the School of Charisma offers a myriad of classes, ranging from personal branding and etiquette, to public speaking and communications.

taught, and that talent carries very little weight if not cultivated and nurtured with tutelage. The founders personally conduct all the classes, and they advocate the culture of “making mistakes”. Students are encouraged to make what “mistakes” they will in the class, so that they would not be repeated elsewhere when the students are out in the society. This is especially true for western etiquette, which involves many aspects which the average Malaysian would not pick up in their entire working lives. In her classes, Chui Ling noticed that the lot of us also tend to sell ourselves short when it comes to presenting ourselves, and prefer to remain humble and unheard. She has this advice for those of us thinking this way – Success is about being heard, and being shy about it will make it very hard for you to get there.

Get in touch with the School of Charisma at 03-6201 5108 (10.30am – 6.30pm) or e-mail info@schoolofcharisma.com and bring out the charisma in you.

Building your personal brand For the longest time since her youth, Chui Ling did not think that charisma is a skill that can be taught – she once held the perception that it is something you're born with, or you're not. As she grew and experienced life as an avid traveller, she gradually came to the realization that all skills can be JUL - SEP 2016

Professional Malaysian Racer Zen Low looks on his challenging but always high-flying career Motorsport athletes. The mention of the word summons images of fast cars, race queens, and when the winner is announced – the spraying of champagne on one another in celebration of their victories. What we see on the stands and on television is truly a spectacle, but don't you ever wonder, of the champion’s journey getting there? For a glimpse of one man's remarkable journey to podiums across the world, the CloudHAX editorial team leaped at the opportunity to spend an afternoon with Malaysian ace GT racer, Zen Low.

A TORRID AFFAIR WITH SPEED Born and raised in Sarawak, Zen did not have a taste of speed until he was 12, when good ol' grandma got him a BMX. For the energetic Zen back then, the bike was his pride and joy - he rode far and wide and went everywhere with it. His continuous search for adrenaline drove him towards go-karts at the age of 17, and later on Jet Skis competitively, spending two years in Team Petronas Jet Sport. Zen’s life can be described as a torrid affair with speed, and it’s a mistress he plans on keeping till the day he dies. It was not until Zen’s late teens that he received instruction in racing from one of

the best racing schools – the JimRussell Racing School in the UK. It is a prestigious institution which produced countless champions and race winners for decades. Zen graduated top three from his class, and proceeded to join Formula Vauxhall and Formula Ford where he was a regular fixture. Having soaked up three years’ worth of experience on the circuits, Zen made the decision to take one step back from racing, and pursue other endeavours in life. In 1993, Zen left the United Kingdom and returned to his native Sarawak. Though leaving the circuits was him taking a decisive step away from the track, his passion for racing never wavered nor diminished in the

ZEN LOW

Since 2009, Zen has participated in many prominent races, such as the Sepang 12 Hour, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, the GT Asia Series, and the Asian Le Mans Series, just to name a few. Though somewhat content with his achievements so far, this veteran has his eyes on a much greater prize – which is the completion of 24H Le Mans, easily one the most prestigious races of our time. He prides himself in being a family man, and attributes much of his success to the support of his great friends and family.

slightest. In his mind, Zen knew he was born to burn rubber, and dearly held onto his dream of racing again someday.

A STEP BACK FROM THE TRACK Zen came back to Sarawak, and saw an opportunity to make an honest living and good money – as a car salesman. His family did not approve of his choice of work, but Zen’s knowledge of automobiles coupled with his enigmatic personality made him a very compelling salesman. Before long, Zen was hauling Rovers and continentals into Sarawak for his quickly expanding clientele.

With a small nest egg, he started a humble workshop named Automobili. Zen’s strong work ethic coupled with a striking entrepreneurial flair quickly propelled the venture to great heights. Within a few years, Automobili grew to become Sarawak’s largest workshop and Zen eventually accepted one of the numerous offers to buy out his company. This was the first of a string of ventures that would eventually lead Zen to many others.

“Opportunities come to us in life more often than we think, and it takes courage and a clear head to see them, and grab hold of them.” - Zen Low

RETURN TO THE STARTING GRID In 2007, Zen found himself itching to make a return to the racing track, and could not quite find the infrastructure to support the kind of racing he had in mind. That was when he founded his own race team, Aylezo. Though Zen was racing with his own team, the first couple of years were tough with little results, but Zen’s persistence and impeccable ethic eventually got himself crowned the Malaysian Super Series Champion in 2012. With Aylezo, he has participated in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, 12 hours Merdeka Endurance Race, Asian Le Mans Series, and the GT Asia Series, among many others to follow.

BE A RACE CAR DRIVER IN JUST 8 WEEKS TOC-Aylezo Racing Academy introduces high performance driving and racing course.

LEARN TO SEE THE COLOUR OF OPPORTUNITY Zen is a man who see opportunities everywhere he goes, and that is his advice for anyone aspiring to achieve anything this life. “Opportunities come to us in life more often than we think, and it takes courage and a clear head to see them, and grab hold of them.” Zen made the most of the opportunities that came his way, and he stands today a fulfilled man on the path towards achieving his dreams.

Malaysia’s automotive industry giants Aylezo and TOC Automotive College have combined to establish a racing academy for passionate automotive enthusiasts. Led by professional drivers, this eight week course teaches potential racers the best seating positions, how to brake, controlling the accelerator, and understanding the performance aspects of car setup and modifications. Interested to see if you have what it takes? Intakes commence on February, April, July, August and November. Entry is open those with a valid driving license and basic knowledge of automotive or motorsports. Call TOC at 03-7955 2855 for more information.
