The Emerald City: boasting views of Mount Rainier and filling the streets with art, delicious food and world class lodging. Often known for its rain, Seattle offers quite the summer experience, with sunny days almost daily and a variety of water activities on majestic Lake Washington and Lake Union.

Seattle WHERE TO STAY

Inn at the Market

Mayflower Park Hotel

Ever wanted a place to stay in the heart of world famous Pike Place Market? Well the appropriately named Inn at the Market is the premier place to stay if you want a place where all the famous haunts of Seattle are within arms reach! On a hill overlooking Elliot Bay, with ferries frequently crossing the water and the Olympic Mountains in the distance, this extraordinarily scenic spot couldn’t be better. The rooms on the west side have superb ocean views, but there are additional rooms on the north end that provide a partial ocean view as well. The lobby and the rooms themselves are quite spacious, with furniture and decor pleasing to the eye yet not overdone.

Celebrating its 92nd anniversary this year on July 16, this European-influenced hotel is centrally located on Olive Way and 4th Ave. Situated just steps from the downtown mall, light rail station, Westlake Center, and a 7-minute walk to popular Pike Place Market, there’s few other lodgings that can boast of such easy access. Upon entering the lobby we were greeted with a grand crystal chandelier and instantly noticed a wide variety of historic pieces, such as a grandfather clock, marble accents and mail slots behind the front desk. They have a variety of guest room styles which are very spacious and decorated in a Queen Anne-style. The Mayflower Park Hotel is the only Seattle member of Historic Hotels of America.

Seattle WHERE TO DINE

Red Cedar & Sage Tucked away under the Pike Place Market, Red Cedar & Sage is a hidden gem that packs a yummy punch. It takes a few staircases down from the main entrance to find, but once you’re there you’ll know you’ve found the right place for great dining. You can sit at the bar, or in the open atrium. On sunny days, the place opens up its wide windows, so you always feel relaxed during your meal. It’s an adaptable space for any time of year, but now during the summer is definitely the time to go when the temperatures are hot and you can take advantage of the plentiful natural light! The food takes after the diverse offerings of traditional Pacific Northwest foods, from typical seafood to sandwiches to pizza. The drink menu is just as extensive, with a collection of cocktails and wines.

JUNO Restaurant Sitting under the historic Arctic Club, the JUNO Restaurant is a classy joint with high end food in a high end environment. The Arctic Club Building is over 100 years old, and originally served as a gathering place for men who had braved their way to the Yukon and back during the Alaska Gold Rush. Now, it retains that old world charm of luxury from a century ago. The restaurant has both an open area of tables and booths for the typical crowd, and a cordoned off area for private gatherings. The menu is different between breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but our time at dinner convinced us it had to be the best of the bunch. A full bar and large list of unique cocktails gets you started off right, and a cosmopolitan always leaves us satisfied.

WHAT TO DO

Seattle Seattle Mariners Enjoy sunshine, ballpark food, engaging fan atmosphere, and see the best of Seattle baseball at T-Mobile Park! The boys are mashing home runs at a historic rate this season and it’s always a whirlwind to see the Mariners grab hold of the game and get that victory. Some additions to the ballpark include new food options, and the spacious ‘Pen also received a makeover. Among the diverse stands to eat from, our favorite might be Fat’s Chicken! For something new and unexpected, we recommend the Poutine, a gravy and cheese mixture dumped on top of fries to make for a perfect snack and delicious alternative to the park’s famous garlic fries. Another addition is Lil’ Woody’s, an appropriate stop for any burger fan. Located just inside the Centerfield gate.

Leavenworth WHERE TO DINE

JJ Hills Restaurant Located inside the Icicle Village Resort, the JJ Hills Restaurant is named after the railroad tycoon James J Hill, an important figure in putting Leavenworth on the map. It even features a model train that zips around an upper shelf above the patrons’ heads! Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, they have some wonderful German additions like the Weinerschnitzel and Bavarian Sausage Plate. We recommend the Bavarian Chicken, a tender piece of grilled skinless chicken breast smothered in demi glaze brown sauce. There are also pasta dishes, salmon and clams if you like seafood, or burgers and steaks if beef is your preference. Additionally, there is also a variety of salads to pair your meal with.

Good Mood Food A small family run cafe with a wide range of food offerings. If you’re stopping by for breakfast, there’s breakfast croissants, waffles, and burritos to curb your appetite. For lunch, there are several pita wraps to choose from, with fillings ranging from chicken to salmon. Sides of soup and salad can be added on, and there’s a lunch special that changes daily. And for the sweet tooth in your party, there’s an abundance of pastries, strudel, cookies, scones, and cake. For summer, we highly recommend trying their juice smoothie, a perfect blend of apples, beets, carrots, celery, and kale that hit the spot! To top it off we loved the giant chocolate chip cookie, which not only reinforced the Bavarian theme, but tasted delicious.

Horseback Riding

Osprey Rafting

Sip and Paint

Ever wanted to speed down a river, water gushing beside you? At Osprey Rafting the rapids make for an interesting ride! The rafting journey itself follows the Wenatchee River and goes through half a dozen rapids, determined as ‘class 3.’ Yet, this fun ride requires no experience and is completely safe. All you need is the ability to follow your guides instructions and have the strength to keep your feet under the nooks in the boat. When your guide tells you to row, you row. When your raft bumps through the rapids, you ensure your feet are secure before entering them. It’s a simple proposition, and in return you get a wild adventure unparalleled by any theme park attraction. Just don’t be afraid of getting wet!

If you’ve never tried painting while wine tasting, it’s a perfect and unorthodox way to treat yourself in the evening. To start off your Sip and Paint class, you receive a short spiel on the guidelines of watercolor painting. Then you’re given a palette of paints, some water and a brush, and your art instructor shows you how to make a beautiful watercolor image step by step. She is there to be a guide, but only if you feel you need one. Just grab your brush, and the rest is up to you! The venue of the event changes each time, so the selection of wines available may depend on where your painting takes place. Following the event, we walked away with one of our new favorite wines, the Blackberry Dessert.

Bustling with sunshine, wineries and good times on the beautiful Lake Chelan, this town may be small, but grand in many ways. Featuring award-winning wineries, restaurants and lodging, it’s a favorite getaway among both young and old.

Lake Chelan WHERE TO STAY

The Lookout

Watson’s Resort

Nestled on a hill near downtown Chelan and boasting views of the lake and surrounding mountains — The Lookout is an adorable lakeside village. The Lookout offers guests lovely vacation homes fit for all family sizes, some with up to 6 bedrooms! Each house offers a unique feel as they are individually owned and decorated. Various properties feature fireplaces, private hot tubs, BBQs and some are even pet friendly! The village is designed to perfection with each home lined side-by-side in a large circular layout, but also offering privacy. Thanks to a recent expansion, the property will have more homes and extra amenities for guests coming this summer!

Tucked away about 15 minutes from the downtown hustle and bustle sits this lowkey family resort. Located on the South Shore of Lake Chelan, Watson’s has been a prime waterfront resort for many generations. Watson’s isn’t your everyday fancy resort, either. They have a fascinating history that dates back to the late 1800’s. Many of the cabins and cottages here today were built in the 1930’s and 40’s. However, you wouldn’t guess it if you looked at them. The cabins are kept under pristine care and have been remodeled and renovated over time to make sure each guest is cozy and can make themselves at home.

Sorrento’s Ristorante Located right off the lake, nestled on the vineyards of Tsillan Cellars lays a restaurant that has outstanding Italian food and views to remember. Tsillan Cellars owner Dr. Jankelson fell in love with the food of Italy before developing his interest in wine. After dozens of trips to Italy, Tsillan Cellars was born, and soon after, Sorrento’s Ristorante followed. The property has stunning views of Lake Chelan and an admirable architecture both inside and outside the open air restaurant. Our meals consisted of a juicy flavorful steak served alongside a bed of fresh vegetables and grilled chicken fettuccine. Sorrento’s was named OpenTable Top 100 Scenic Restaurants in America in 2014 for the views, food and wine.

Lake Chelan Cheese

Dale at Lake Chelan Helicopters knows his stuff. He also knows how to give you a good time while offering an amazing view of Lake Chelan from the air. For those wishing for an adventure or just a unique activity, Lake Chelan Helicopters has you covered. With a variety of flight options to choose from such as a simple half hour flight of the Chelan/Manson area, or for a more extensive tour you can fly up to the Stehekin Valley Ranch and enjoy dinner and a guided drive to Rainbow Falls. The experience was epic and comfortable! Throughout the ride, Dale shared interesting facts about the town and kept us entertained, engaged and made us feel safe as we flew over Lake Chelan and the towns of Manson and Chelan.

This family owned business nestled in Lake Chelan Winery offers a wide variety of domestic and imported cheeses from all over the world, at your fingertips! When you first get up to the cheese counter you might be overwhelmed at the selection, so be sure to ask the staff for a run down on their favorites! We recommend trying a few samples and then grabbing some tastings from the winery to enjoy over a glass of wine. Our favorite was a spicy cheddar cheese that goes amazingly on some scrambled eggs and in sandwiches. It has a unique flavor, a bit spicy with a nice kick. The prices are affordable and they even have a cheese club for those die-hard cheese fans!

One thing I personally love when visiting Lake Chelan is trying all the local wineries and their newest selection. It makes for an especially relaxing activity to unwind and enjoy the view. However, the downside of wine tasting, especially when visiting several wineries is having to drive from one to the other. Thankfully Lakeside Limo offers a fabulous limousine service with your own personal chauffeur. Just schedule a pick up and away you go, wine tasting to your hearts content! Your chauffeur will drop you off and pick you up once you’re ready to move on to your next destination!

With Washington being the Evergreen State, it’s only appropriate for it to boast some photo-worthy National Parks and Forests. The Olympic National Park offers sweeping landscapes and ocean views; Mount Rainier offers wildflower meadows in the summertime; and the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest offers fantastic hiking in the Cascades.

National Parks WHERE TO STAY

Three Bears Cabins

Lake Quinault Lodge

Being located less than a minute from the Mount Rainier National Park entrance allows for the benefits of being close to the area while not having to deal with the slopes or traffic. The cabin is roomy and cozy simultaneously, with a loft-style second story and large open air dining room. There is also a spacious kitchen with all the fixings, so plan to bring food for lunch and dinner, but leave the dishes behind. For breakfast they’ve got you covered with pancake/waffle mix, a waffle iron, and maple syrup. The outdoors area is just beautiful and perfect for roasting marshmallows on the outdoor fire and relaxing in the large hot tub.

Located in the Olympic National Park, this Lodge built in 1926 is beautiful to look at, and heavily references the wooded forest surroundings of the park. The walls are lined with original black and white photographs of the construction of the lodge and historical snaps of the local area. It’s a neat feature that involves you more in the history of the people and the lodge itself. There’s even the piano originally saved from the first version of the lodge, which burned down in the twenties. I highly recommend staying in their Fireplace Rooms. A quick walk from the lobby and pool, these rooms offer more privacy than staying in the main lodge and a grand view of the lake.

During our last visit we stayed in a rustic cabin with a full size kitchen, wood burning fireplace, private two-person soaking tub and a king size bed. Wellspring is a popular wedding spot and even has a bridal cottage for that special day. The grounds are beautiful and during the summer there are several ways to entertain yourself. Some our of favorites include walking their hiking trails, lounging on the hammocks and visiting their spa. Be sure to check out their new Treehouse!

Roosevelt Restaurant Located inside the Lake Quinault Lodge is the historic Roosevelt Restaurant, named for the time President Franklin Roosevelt visited and had lunch there in 1937. They have a wide selection of food for all meals including dessert, and wide windows providing sweeping views of the lake and surrounding forests. They even have several hummingbird feeders hanging outside, so don’t be surprised to see a few of them humming around. Although they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, we highly recommend stopping by for dinner and trying the Shepherd’s Pie, or pumpkin ravioli. The lunch menu is mostly dominated by sandwiches and burgers, which is an easy crowd pleaser.

Mt. Rainier Railroad Dining Set a few miles out of the Mt. Rainier National Park, this family owned and operated since 1987 diner is perfect for a pit stop or full dinner. Located in an old caboose, it offers a unique dining experience with mouth-watering house smoked tastes including alder smoked prime rib, smoked poultry and pork and fish. In the restaurant they offer a full line of breakfast, lunch and dinner items. During the summer months they have a lounge where you can enjoy an outside beer garden through Labor Day. Try their famous Derailer or one of their many other signature cocktails. Inside the lounge you can enjoy the full menu service in a friendly and fun environment.

Visit the Beaches

If you get tired of the rain forest and want to soak up the sun and take advantage of the summer sunshine, what’s better than heading to the ocean! There are several great beaches to check out within a half hour drive of Lake Quinault, located right inside the Olympic National Park. Driving along the scenic Washington Coast is enough of a treat, but if you want to see something truly extraordinary, we recommend the Tree Root Cave at Kalaloch Campground. It’s a tree that had the soil under it eroded away over time, yet the depth of the roots on the side allows it to still stand. It appears to hover and is not only an exceptional sight of nature, but also a great photo opportunity to show your friends.

With the Olympic National Park comes the Rainforest, a lush, green paradise bordering the beautiful lake front. Tours are provided that last around four hours, so it’s not a quick trip you can try for a lark. But once you get started, you’ll know you’re in for a treat. The tour is run by a guide in a small bus that seats comfortably about ten people. Your guide will share interesting facts on the different species of trees to be seen, the history of the Native American tribes that lived in the area, and the expeditions attempted by the early explorers.

Follow the Wildflowers In the summer months, the meadows surrounding Paradise at Mount Rainier become alive with color and folks come from all over the world to delight in their beauty. Marvel over pink penstemon, purple lupine, yellow cinquefoils, red paintbrush and bright white avalanche lilies. Set out on the system of paved nature trails from Paradise and venture into these dazzling meadows. The gentle family-friendly Nisqually Vista Trail is a fan favorite for meandering the mountainside. Located in the heart of the Alberta district is a fancy, modern style vacation rental that is beautiful, well-designed and has everything you could need and more. They work with local growers and suppliers to make sure you are getting the freshest ingredients. They also have salads, local craft beers, ciders, wine, cocktails and kombucha. We highly recommend their spicy cauliflower ranch pizza which had the perfect kick. Pair it with a local Portland cider to top it all off!

Voodoo Doughnut Voodoo Doughnut is known to be famous for their unusual take on a familiar treat (Homer Simpson would be proud)! This establishment that was originally opened in downtown Portland in 2003, has been both a local and tourist favorite. They take a unique twist by adding oreo crumbles, cap’n crunch cereal and other yummy salty-sweets like bacon on their maple bar. They definitely have a handle on things, and has been featured on tv shows, hundreds of publications and always seems to have a constant line, especially at the downtown Portland location.
