Further developing our policy of celebrating the visual arts, this years exhibition is a collaboration between the Clifden Arts Festival and Patrick J Murphy. We are proud to present a selection of works from the Patrick J Murphy and Antoinette Murphy Private Collection. Patrick J Murphy has played a major role in the appreciation and revitalisation of Irish art. He has had an active role in the founding and development of ROSC, an organisation he has chaired since 1980. He has also given long standing service to the Arts Council of Ireland, being elected to the Council in 1981 and appointed Chairman in 2000. He has acted as Arts Adviser to the President of Ireland and to the Office of Public Works, to ensure that the best of contemporary Irish art is displayed in public buildings.

The selected works from Pat and Antoinette’s superb collection includes early oil paintings by Grace and Paul Henry. Tropical Landscape by the Malaysian/Chinese artist Dr. Jolly Koh. Andy Warhol, the American pop artist, is represented with two screen prints. Fergus and Brian Bourke are also represented as are Hughie O’Donoghue R.A, Carolyn Mulholland R.H.A., Mary Swanzy, Sam Francis and Abigail O’Brien R.H.A. Presenting a kaleidoscopic view of their superb collection, the exhibition encompasses a selection of works that includes oil paintings, screen prints, sculptures using various materials, marble, mild steel and bronze. Exhibitions such as Ceilluradh / Into the West offers the opportunity for the public to see and experience art. In 2007, Joe was the subject of a documentary film Too Late for the Early House by director Art Ó Briain of Moving Stills. While Joe has had his work included in many publications, this is the first book dedicated wholly to work he has created over his 45 years in Ireland. The special limited edition Book of One Hundred contains; Strike While The Irony is Hot, a DVD of a short film on the artist by Barry Ryan; Chapel Island, an etching, numbered, signed and dated by Joe Boske; Amara, a CD of original music composed by Joe Boske. “My fascination with the Bens is not confined to their dramatic presence in the landscape observed as one moves around them on the bogs and roads that hold them together as a group. Climbing and walking into them and looking out from them is spectacular. The total physical, sensory experience of being in the Bens (and their neighbours the Maam Turks, of course!) is exciting, arresting and demanding – and ultimately led to the images in this book. I made monoprints (or monotypes), oil paintings over monoprints, ink drawings and pencil drawings. The larger ones are made up of panels or units, which hopefully work individually, but also link into coherent compositions. All the images derive from studies made in numerous sketchbooks and from photographic notes made in situ in the mountains; they are my attempts to reposess the varied experiences of being there.
Although there are a number of access routes into the Bens, I find the Glencoaghan Horseshoe particularly exciting as a kind of amphitheatre. I therefore decided to make this the main reference point from which to work.”

I hope these images express something about the physical terrain itself and the energy required in traversing it; as well as ‘pointing’ to arresting details which came into focus as I walked as a consequence of changes in light, position, distance and weather. I hope some will express something about the impact of the spectacular vistas which unfold on reaching various peaks in the Bens.

Iwona AdamczakStanczyk was born in 1978 in Katowice, Poland. She attended the local School of Photography and later graduated from
the University of Silesia with the Master of Arts in Philosophy under the mentorship of Andrzej Urbanowicz, a renowned painter. The title of her Thesis was “ The Symbol as a Medium of Energy”. After graduation she left Katowice for Ireland and has lived in Clifden since 2005 with her husband and a young son. Iwona has been painting for several years, discovering and trying out new forms and techniques. She has had a couple of exhibitions of her works in both Poland and Ireland. Her paintings make wide use of symbols, especially the archetypal ones, as seen in madalas – her best personal form of symbolic expression. For many years she has been fascinated with Tibetan Buddhism. Ilona Wielosik was born in Poland in 1980. After completing her graduation in Philosophy, inspired by courageous hearts who through ages have challenged and expanded boundaries of sky-like mind, she began her journey beyond... the ‘Known’ in India. She spend few years, surrounded by high snow peaks, mountain lakes, holy rivers, shrines, living with spiritual teachers, tribal communities, discovering unknown lands of body, mind and our planet. The art is her passion and the way to share her own exploration of consciousness, world religion, mythology, metaphysics and the spiritual beauty of nature around us. She has exhibited her artwork in group and solo shows in Poland, Holland and Ireland.

Unplugged 2a The Grainstore, Bridge Street,Clifden
Unplugged is the title of an exhibition of drawing, painting and photography by three Mayo-artists: Betty Gannon; Michael Gannon and Ian Wieczorek. The exhibition is the result of authorised visits the artists made to the Bellacorick decommissioned power station in Co. Mayo during 2008 and 2009, and the artists have created their own personal visual responses to the iconic building’s structure and former function. Betty Gannon’s drawings explore the energy of the machinery at the heart of the former peat-fired power station. Michael Gannon’s photographs explore the shapes and patterns that embody both the construction and physical presence of the building. Ian Wieczorek’s expressive paintings also address the functionality of the building. The results are a record of a place that for many years was a significant presence, both physically and sociohistorically, on the Bellacorick landscape in Co Mayo.

Ian Wieczorek Ian Wieczorek is a visual artist living and working in Co. Mayo, Ireland. His practice is based in painting, video, installation and curation. Since 2003 he has exhibited widely in group/selected shows in Ireland (including RHA Annual Exhibition, CCA:RDS Collective Contemporary Art; COE/Claremorris Open Exhibition, and IONTAS), and internationally in N. Ireland, Germany, France, Portugal and China. Recent solo exhibitions include Market Place Arts Centre, Armagh, N. Ireland (2012); University of Leeds School of Design, UK (2012); Custom House Studios and Gallery, Westport, Co. Mayo
(2013); and The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon, Co. Clare (2013). Sepulchre, a large-scale sculpture/ intervention based in a derelict cottage, was commissioned as part of the Greenway Artists Initiative Sculpture Project, Co. Mayo in 2012. Since graduating from the GMIT in 2008 she has exhibited nationally and internationally with selected solo and group exhibitions. The exhibition will include paintings from his last two London Exhibitions at Pattersons in Mayfair, and also the first showing of some of his work for his next London show (April 2015) for Pattersons and Gladwell of Knightsbridge.

It was in 1950 that Kenneth and his wife Joan first came to Clifden, escaping college and spending a summer holiday in the West. Between 1960 and 1980 he returned to run summer schools and created The Irish School of Landscape Painting. During this time, in 1972, he and Joan purchased their cottage in Ballinaboy. It was there, starting in 1990 and continuing to this day, that he developed The Art Centre. Over his years in the area, Kenneth exhibited paintings of local areas with Albert Millar and other Galleries, but never did a ‘One Man Show’. Kenneth’s generosity is well known, and in recent years has done a number of live demonstrations in the Hotel in aid of Cancer Care. This year for Clifden Arts Week in September, he will do yet another, this time in aid of the R.N.L.I. – a wonderful and deserving cause. Kenneth will donate a painting which will be auctioned at the event, with the total proceeds going to the R.N.L.I.

He teaches creative writing to adults and teens across Ireland. He contributes to Arena, RTE’s arts programme and is currently working on his first novel, his debut poetry collection, Don’t Go There, having been published in2012. Terry McDonagh writes for adults and children. He has held residencies in Europe, Asia and Australia. He has published eight collections, his latest being Ripple Effect (Arlen House). He has just completed Echolocation, poetry for young people. He lives in Mayo and Hamburg. Tuesday 23rd Our special guest Colm Keegan concludes his workshops. Humourfit Theatre in Education. The latest programme of performances for teenagers on matters affecting their young lives. Bullying, including cyber-bullying, drug and drink awareness and mental health take centre stage with these performances. The company was founded in 1990 and has been blazing a trail in schools’ drama, in that time, receiving the highest of praise for its innovative approach. Many thanks again to artistic director Mike O’Sullivan and his team. John Durning continues his guitar classes. Aisling Mylotte continues her dancing classes. My Fellow Sponges Thursday 18th | 10pm | Mullarkey’s Bar
Based in the city of Galway, My Fellow Sponges have been touring countrywide for the past two years, winning fans with their onstage theatrics and often unpredictable, but seamless movement between musical styles and moods. They first starting raising eyebrows with their brilliantly kaleidoscopic video for This Dream Song. The whole video was shot backwards and in one take. It earned them a position in the Golden Plec’s top 10 Irish videos of 2013. 2013 also saw the release of their debut album, Bonne Nuit which has been described as “a display of the band’s determination not to be typecast.” It was recorded in various houses around the country while the band was touring and exploring their sound. Ebhan Loughlan wrote that the record is “a meandering journey through beautiful odes, ballads, theatrical accompaniment and voices, intricate percussion, visual lyrics, and colourful imagery.” Their most recent release Something Like Light, demonstrates a slightly more reflective side of the band, without losing their original folksy charm. They are currently touring nationwide along the festival circuit making appearances at Westport Music Festival, Body and Soul, Longitude, The Electric Picnic and The Sunflower Fest near Belfast. Their live shows make pleasing leaps from jangly folk to hipswinging bossa to eerie minimalism refreshingly instilling each of these styles with their own personalities.

Elaine Gaston is from the north coast of Ireland. She has had work published in journals and magazines and in anthologies by Peterloo, Blackstaff Press and Templar Poetry. She won a Special Commendation in the Patrick Kavanagh Award 2013, a Commendation in the National Poetry Competition (U.K.), 2013 and was short-listed twice for The Annie Deeny Memorial Prize. Her film-poem Push-Bike, commissioned by The Poetry Society, was shown at the Antwerp Filmpoem Festival 2014 and at Poetry International at the Southbank, London in July 2014. In the late 60s and 70s, Dublin played host to many seismic cultural moments and a collision of imaginative energies made for a dynamic and thrilling arts scene in the city. Peter (pictured above) was at the heart of this, revolutionising the Irish poetry scene, first with Tara Telephone and later with the acclaimed Gallery Press which has since those early days published over 400 titles by Ireland’s leading poets and playwrights. Meanwhile Terry (pictured left) was igniting the music landscape through his performances with Sweeney’s Men (how seminal is that!), Steeleye Span, Dr. Strangely Strange, The Woods Band and of course, more recently, The Pogues. Join them tonight in the assured hands of broadcaster Vincent Woods for poems, tunes and reminiscences, in what promises to be a compelling evening.

The legendary Jimmy Crowley and Stokers Lodge. The band is comprised of Jimmy, Chris Twomey, Mick Murphy, Johnny Murphy and Eoin O’Riabhaigh. The name of the band is also the place in Frankfield, Douglas, Co. Cork where Jimmy grew up. Heard first and encouraged by Micheal O’Domhnaill of the Bothy Band, initially their main objective was to bring an entirely Cork accent to the music and to avoid in Jimmy’s words, sounding like anybody else! Stokers Lodge, since their humble beginning in the Phoenix Bar, (the O’Donoghue’s of Cork!) in the early seventies have played the major folk festivals in Ireland and Britain and toured America. Their two albums, The Boys of Fairhill and Camphouse Ballads are now considered to be classics of the folk era and for no better reason that the fun they have always had and work yet un-done, the band are back together. Louis has been involved with the contemporary renaissance of poetry in Irish since 1980 when he was first published in the poetry journal, Innti, which he subsequently edited. He has since published many collections, is internationally renowned and is a four times winner of the Oireachtas prize for best collection of poems in Irish. Arts Week extends a great welcome back to the legendary Joe Burke, Anne Conroy Burke and friends. Joe Burke is among the greatest exponents of traditional Irish Music. His sheer musical brilliance, his knowledge and love of his land, its music and culture has earned him an immortal place in the history of Irish music and Folklore. His technical virtuosity is unique, but that is just part of his great artistry. Joe traces the sources and melodic forms of Irish Music back to the rhythms and cadences of Irish speech and language, and feels that they have an intimate relationship with each other. To him the music is expressive and emotional, evoking the Irish countryside and the varying humour of the people. From Kilnadeema, East Galway, Joe Burke is widely regarded as the master accordionist who started a huge revival of interest in the instrument. A legend in his own time, many of the younger generation, now famous players themselves, have been inspired by his style and technique. His live performances, as well as his own charm and wit have made him a favourite with all lovers of Irish music.

Gerry’s travel diary recounting his assembly of a small group of Irish mountaineers and their attempts at unclimbed mountains & unexplored valleys of the Indian Himalaya is amazing in its own right, but the story really starts when he endeavours to travel home from Northern India to his home in Delgany. A world of temples, festivals, holy cows, Kalashnikovs, donkey herders, stoners and saga, Gerry gives us an insight into the day-to-day lives of the mountain peoples. He finds charm and tolerance in Pakistan and a surprising openness in today’s Iran. Across rural Turkey and on into Germany, Climbing Ramabang is one man’s understanding of mountains and mayhem. Gerry will recount some hilarious stories alongside a presentation of photographs from his travels. Suitable for serious climbers, teenagers & any adults interested in adventure, travel & climbing. Playing a set sung entirely in FrenchCreole, Pitak are the sound of the French-Caribbean. Combining elements of Reggae, Jazz, Soul, Samba and West African rhythms, Ines Khai’s voice rises above like an eagle soaring on the warm Caribbean breeze. Her emotive songs about the struggles of life and love in Guadeloupe are illustrated by her dramatic stage presence. It is easy to see that every second of her performance comes straight from the heart. You may not understand the lyrics but you will still be taken on the journey. Daniel Muyombo’s West-African Blues guitar style sits very comfortably alongside the voice of Ines underlining the cultural ancestry of the African people from Guadeloupe, mainly from the area between Senegal and The Congo.
Ines Khai’s amazing vocal range is accompanied by a fabulous line-up of seasoned and diverse musicians; including one of Ireland’s top bassists, Jerome Rimson (from Detroit), two Congolese musicians from Ireland’s best travelled African Band (The Lace) Daniel Muyombo and Troca on electric guitar and drums respectively, and Ireland’s Patrick Naughton playing Djembe, percussion and shakers making up the quintet. It is testament to the quality of Ines’s performance that she has been able to gather such a high quality line-up as her backing band. Clifden Arts Festival is delighted to welcome Pitak. Music with Seanie Vaughan and his band. Local man Seanie’s influences couldn’t be from a wider spectrum. He was influenced at a very early age by singers who would come into the family pub in Clifden, and these could range from immigrants who sang of the hard life of a labourer abroad to blues singers with their melodic tones singing American blues. Seanie studied the music of Irish folk singers such as Christy Moore, Freddie White and Luke Kelly and these influenced him heavily in his early teens. His debut album Altered Vision entered the Irish indie charts at no. 5 when it was first launched.
