Millionaire Matchmaker’s Justin Bird | Advice on Dating & Future Plans

I

f you watch Patti Stanger’s Millionaire Matchmaker, you’re likely familiar with Justin Bird. Hailing from Southern California, first as a resident of San Dimas, then living in Newport Beach for 11 years, and now in Hollywood since January 2014, Bird caught Stanger’s eye after giving advice as the “guy’s guy.” Success, however, was rather sudden. Although Bird was an All-American baseball player in college and received an MBA from Chapman University, he had been working for Executive Moving Systems (North American Van Lines) before being offered a position on the show. But rather than some out-there dating advice, Bird keeps it simple with his clients, telling them to stay traditional and meet people through an activity. “When everyone is looking for relationships nowadays, we have apps, the internet, but I’m more of a traditional guy,” he tells Clientele Luxury in an interview. “Therefore I suggest if you are looking or 6 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

thinking of getting into a relationship, think of an activity such as a yoga class to allow you to meet new people, charity events for common interests. If you want a healthy relationship, look for it in a healthy environment.” And Bird stays true to his advice. His hobbies appear extensive and varied at a glance and include playing acoustic guitar, fishing, exercising, listening to country music, and traveling. About the latter, he says Prague has been his favorite to visit. “I have visited twice and I fell in love both times,” he explains. “The amazingly beautiful cobblestone streets, tasty food and beer, the landscape and original buildings, the castles, and the underground network of bars that you wouldn’t know existed unless you were with a local are part of what makes it so special. To anyone who likes to travel, this city is a must-see, as there is something for everyone.” But when it comes to love, Bird’s tips lean more toward sensible and practical – in short, what he expects isn’t always a big presentation, or else, you’ll both end up disappointed.

“Fall in love, don’t fall in love with money” and “Money doesn’t FALL from trees” were two tips he gave Clientele Luxury during his interview. While they seem cliché on the surface, they have far deeper meaning. Specifically, Bird went into detail, two people should be on the same page in a relationship. Two, as you date, don’t turn every interaction into an over-the-top affair – show who you really are from the start. But while such advice seems to erase everything from The Rules, Bird believes that old school manners and behavior – such as opening doors and picking her up – are the way to go. In today’s climate – and frankly, for any social interaction – you can’t ignore technology, and he further addressed this, advising that both parties shouldn’t answer their cell phones or do business while on a date. Ultimately, “It’s not about what you get out of a relationship; it’s about what you can put into it,” he says, and then uses a pet tiger metaphor: “A relationship is like having a pet tiger, either you feed it every day or bad things will happen.” Bird, as well, addressed the best seasons for dating – and what the potential outcome may be. “In summer, everyone is on the hunt for summer loving, then when it ends everyone parts ways,” he says. “During Fall, folks are more low key, and statistics prove that people are more likely to fall into depression. Thus, people are more susceptible 10 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

to fall into a relationship during fall for the reasons above.” Millionaire Matchmaker appears as just the beginning. Right now, he has become involved with Friends of Runyon, an organization partnering with Los Angeles Wildlife with the goal of protecting and conserving the public park. Being the celebrity brand ambassador for RunyonUSA Apparel has helped raise money and awareness for the organization. Along with this, he’s one of the judges for Miss Sacramento USA and has a few films, a fitness video, health tips, and cooking and fashion projects in the works. About his plans, he tells Clientele Luxury, “In the future, there are still opportunities that I want to accomplish such as throwing the first pitch out at an Angels game, traveling the world to become more cultural, and ultimately fall in love and start a family.” ■ Photography by: Kenneth Brayden Matthews Grooming by: Kyle Hennessy Styling by: Toni Ferrara Assistant Styling by: Devin Rhodriquez Location courtesy of Seven Points Boutique LA Written by: Irene Test Produced by: Erin Green Layout by: Renee Easley

ince founding her eponymous design firm in 2003, Sara Story has established an elegant, clear, and comfortable aesthetic – one taking influence from her travels, contemporary art and fashion, and active lifestyle and balancing multiple elements for an everyday, polished feel. Her firm, focusing on both residential and commercial properties across the globe, continues to expand, while the designer herself started a wallpaper line in 2012, now in its second collection, and is preparing for a Holland & Sherry fabric collection. Sara’s second wallpaper is slated to launch in late 2014 and Sara is working on a fabric collection, but no additional details have been confirmed at this time. Like Sara’s first wallpaper collection, the second collection will be available through Holland & Sherry. No distribution details have been confirmed for the fabric. Born in Japan, Story has traveled to several points in the western world and Far East. Her path toward her prominent place in the architecture and design spheres has included earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of San Diego and a degree in Interior Architecture from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco

and in 2011, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the former. Sara’s Gramercy Park Townhouse renovation landed her in Elle Décor’s “Top 5 to Watch in 2011” and has been featured in Architectural Digest, the New York Times, Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Luxe Interiors and Design, the Chicago Tribune, Gotham Magazine, Interior Design, Veranda, Vogue Living, Oprah, and InStyle, among other publications. As well, she was selected to participate in 2008 and 2013 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Annual Decorator Shows, in which selected top interior designers transform a Manhattan home into an exhibit of furnishings, art, and technology to raise funds for the organization. One of Story’s recent properties is the SK Ranch, located on 500 acres of rolling terrain in Texas Hill Country. This modern family retreat, ideal for dining and entertaining, stands out with clean lines and contemporary art juxtaposed with vintage furnishings and sophisticated finishes. The property, spread out over 10 acres, consists of a main house, a guest retreat, a pool house, and tennis pavilion. Overall, the property’s

architecture and design consider the surroundings, from the use of Texas Lueders limestone to broad overhangs for large outdoor verandas and floor-to-ceiling windows that let guests take in the view. Yet, in spite of its largeness, SK Ranch maintains an intimate feel. The Main House centers around the “great room,” an open space with dining and living rooms. As well, it’s built with an eat-in kitchen, six bedrooms, and a master suite. As the property’s main house, it features double-height ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, with an overall feel blending period vintage, modern design, and contemporary art. In the Main House, the living room brings together contemporary and Texas chic, with an L-shaped sectional and fireplace with surrounding eggshell veneer panels. Nearby, the dining room centers around a custom gray onyx, wood, and metal inlay table and original UNESCO Jacques Adnet leather chairs. The rest of the space features 16 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

a Fragile Future Chandelier by Lonneke Gordijn and Raph Nauta, combining dandelion seed heads, concrete, and phosphorous bronze, a Raymond Loewy credenza, and a surrealist painting by Tomasz Kowalski. The Master Suite, located off the “great room,” opts for a contemporary look with wall panels covered in perforated suede, a 1970s Eileen Gray chair, and a painting by Kati Heck. The joining master bath features Perzel sconces and an open-air shower wrapped in arabsescato white marble. As SK Ranch is ideal for entertaining, guests have a place to stay. With two bedrooms, a living room, and a wine cellar, the guest house goes for a neutral look of cream and gray from Texas Limestone and adds contemporary art pieces from Ellen Berkenblit. Similarly, the nearby pool house reflects the expansive outdoor pool, with a design of clean lines and contemporary furniture. ■

Mark Weaver Adds His Distinctive Touch to Villa Della Costa Photography by: Fred Licht, Los Angeles

S

ince founding his eponymous design firm in 1970, Mark Weaver has worked with a diverse portfolio of clients, covering residential installations, private aircrafts, yachts, and island retreats. Over the years, design projects have encompassed restoring historical properties in Nantucket and Santa Barbara, assisting with prominent projects in London and Piacenza, Italy, and providing corporate installations for Fortune 500 companies. Weaver’s style attracts clients, with a distinctive look blending old and new elements. Designs feature clean and modern lines, with a classic touch, and are geared toward discerning clientele looking to create inviting, gracious environments that are sensitive to scale and proportion. Weaver and his team often incorporate dramatic lighting and are meticulous about furniture, art, and antiques. Italian heritage influences Weaver’s style, especially his love of history, architecture, and antiques. In travel, he observes culture and seeks out the unusual, while paying close attention to quality and detail. This factor carries over not only in his style and designs but with client interactions. With clients, he strives to assist with discovering their interests and then reflects their lifestyles and tastes in the surroundings. Because of these factors, Weaver’s work eschews trends. Rather, everything is tailored to the client’s needs, tastes, and expectations. Throughout all projects, Mark Weaver & Associates become involved in all aspects: planning, construction, landscaping, and finish details. The team works closely with architects and contractors to seamlessly integrate all design elements. Along with his work, Weaver is a founding member of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, a member of the Decorative Arts Council of LACMA, and is a patron of the Los Angeles Opera. One of the designer’s recent properties is Villa Della Costa, located on the Gaviota Coast. Architect Jock M. Sewall & Associates built the 106-acre property, while Weaver’s team added the interior finishes. The newly-built property’s 106 acres offer 360-degreee views of mountains, the countryside, and the Pacific Ocean. Although it’s surrounded by large coastal ranch homes and offers terrific, grand views, its location makes it the perfect bucolic hideaway. Villa Della Costa was designed with a sprawling, single-level floor plan with a rural ranch ambiance. Ideal for entertaining guests, its large-scale rooms incorporate the surrounding setting, with stunning views of the outdoors. In terms of composition, custom hand-hewn walnut floors are found throughout and join a design of steel windows, doors with bronze screens, Sun Valley bronze door hardware, and antiqued ceiling beams. Along with the minimal, distinctive look, strength is at the heart of Villa Della Costa, with new, high-quality grout concrete masonry and steel construction added. Antique roof tiles from Spain and Portugal add an old world touch. The property is currently for sale and privately available for purchase through Joyce Rey and Randy Solakian, exclusive representatives. ■

Farbod Barsum Brings Competition to the Luxury Handbag Market C

an anyone top the Birkin, considered the quintessential celebrity handbag? Farbod Barsum, with an eponymous handbag line, thinks so. From a family of architects, Barsum has strived to produce clean, fashionable designs, even before attending Berkeley and FIDM and earning a Masters in architecture. “The passion was there and it wasn’t until I dedicated a full decade to the retail and fashion industry and studying exotics with suppliers and manufacturers until I decided to go forward with the initiation of my collection,” he tells Clientele Luxury about his line. But before launching it in 2010, Barsum spent time working his way through prestigious fashion houses, including the House of Bijan on Rodeo Drive, where, as an apprentice, he learned directly from the late designer. Barsum’s collection, now on display in his new Beverly Hills store, blends his architectural background with various facets of nature: Specifically, exotic skins and seashells. Describing this approach, he says, “Overall the goal was to transform traditional exotic skin styles to appeal to a broader range of ages, their daily use, and stylistic tastes.” An upgrade from the fashion brand’s former Melrose location, the Rodeo Drive store features 1,600 square feet, with a contemporary, elaborate look created by Barsum and his parents. He says, “The charm, excitement, and luxury of the environment was so inspirational that I always knew one day I would call this retail district home.”

Barsum has long maintained a commitment to sustainability, and ultimate, this is what makes his designs higher quality. Specifically, the approach extends from the harvesting and permit processes to working with suppliers who use sustainable agriculture techniques and tanners that utilize a chrome-free solution and don’t generate runoff. “Our bags are fully faced and trimmed in exotic skin on the interior, whereas the Birkin omits this detail by lining their bags with leather,” he explains about the bags’ difference. “This is a huge cost savings factor for them. Also, the most important detail in our bags is the extensive use of a ‘Turned Edge’ detail. This is where the edges of the panels are spliced thin and turned inwards to create a clean selfcontained finish. It’s a very old-world couture technique that most fashion houses cost-edit or have entirely forgotten the technicality of the craft. The Birkin uses the least expensive finishing technique, which is a raw cut resin-painted edge or simply known as ‘painted edge.’ This will not hold up as beautifully as a turned edge detail and shows the age of the bag visibly when the resin starts to crack and chip off.” While such celebrities as Nicole Scherzinger, Heidi Klum, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cindy Crawford, Sofia Vergara, Christina Hendricks, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Eva Longoria, Katie Holmes, and Mena Suvari have sported Barsum bags, the brand’s future involves expanding internationally and designing shoes, fragrances, and eyewear for women and men. www.FarbodBarsum.com. ■ www.ClienteleLuxury.com | 23

Bettie Bearden Pardee Revisits Newport in Latest Book

W

hat better way to explore Newport, R.I., than with someone who experiences the luxurious seaside town firsthand? Newport resident and style maker, Bettie Bearden Pardee, does just that in her latest book, Living Newport: Homes, People, Style (published by Glitterari Inc. of New York and London). The former Bon Appetit editor goes into the homes of heirs and new residents throughout four seasons, examining how people in Newport entertain, socialize, and dress and why they ultimately choose to live there when they could have picked anywhere else in the world. This accomplished hostess, lecturer, and author has long been a resident of the Rhode Island vacation destination, but more importantly, she’s actively involved in the town, which allows her to provide such a glimpse into this “City by the Sea.” Her Newport home “Parterre” features a garden, which is included in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens and also appears in the coffee table book Gardens, Private and Personal. Offering greater insight into Newport’s residents, Pardee is active for many of the town’s galas during social season and is currently President of the Newport Garden Club and the Chair of the Green Animals Topiary garden. In addition, she assists with such local organizations as the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, the Newport Architectural Forum, and the Hope Funds for Cancer Research. But it’s not just her life in Newport that lends itself to such a 24 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

detailed picture and rarely seen glimpse into its luxury. Pardee’s past work, such as her Bon Appetit on-location feature “Entertaining With Style” and 13-part PBS series The Presidential Palate: Entertaining at the White House, took her directly into the lives of the wealthy or famous. As a result, she has provided such insight in Good Morning America segments and lectured on similar topics with “Bouquets to Art” at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, Kappa Kappa Gamma “Tablescapes” in Dallas, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, NJ, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Santa Barbara Historical Society, the Garden Education Center of Greenwich, and the Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America. With her latest book, Living Newport: Homes, People, Style, Pardee takes a similar approach in examining 17 properties. Gorgeous photographs from Mick Hales, himself contributing to 35 books and various magazine pieces, accompany various anecdotes and tales, with all illustrating Newport’s attractions, associations, architecture, natural beauty, and traditions. This fourth book essentially gets up close. Full color, full page photographs depict personal events, a wedding at the Preservation Society of Newport’s Rosecliff, birthday dinner at William K. Vanderbilt’s former firehouse, and Sunday morning coffee at Oakwood. Within this glimpse are images of a magnificent yacht, Coaching Weekend, America’s Cup, and a Christmas party, along with properties bearing ties to John F. Kennedy, Washington Irving, and Commodore Arthur Curtiss James. Just as the architecture blends neoclassical and modern elements, this look at a rarely revealed way of life shows tradition bridged with modern elegance. If you’ve ever passed by Newport’s grand mansions and wondered about what life is like inside, Pardee’s latest is a must read. The book follows several she has published over the years, including Private Newport: At Home and In The Garden, whose publication prompted an award from the New York Horticultural Society; the re-issue of Newport in Flower, which received recognition from the Garden Club of America; the Pardee Guide to Great Entertaining; and the Pardee Guide to Great Weekend Entertaining. ■ From Living Newport: People, Houses, Style by Bettie Bearden Pardee ©2014, published by Glitterati Incorporated www.GlitteratiIncorporated.com

Kiawah Island Golf Resort: Voted as a Top Luxury & Family Resort in the USA Osprey Point each present unique challenges for golfers of all abilities. Covering a 10-mile barrier island not far from Charleston, S.C., Beyond this, the golfer looking to improve benefits from the Kiawah Island Golf Resort blends into its stunning natural surroundings in more ways than one. Views of beautiful sunsets, the Atlantic lapping against sandy shores, and its unique flora and fauna enhance any experience, be it a vacation stay, a wedding or similar event, or a chance to play at one of the country’s top golf courses. The resort – with multiple facilities, golf courses, a spa, dining options, and activities for all ages – meshes with the island’s natural habitat, with the goal of nature preservation. Specifically, all buildings are built behind secondary dune lines, while street lights, known to disrupt loggerhead sea turtles’ nesting schedule, are forbidden. As well, all of the five championship golf courses and The Sanctuary Hotel are Audubon International-certified as Cooperative Sanctuaries, which recognizes their commitment to environmental protection. The outlook and strategy pervade the resort’s services. New initiatives, such as nature programming, water and energy conservation, recycling, and repurposing, are regularly rolled out. Kiawah further takes a sustainable approach with its food and products, using local sources, organic products, and recycling and waste minimization programs. With these factors in mind, golfers from all over the world – professionals, enthusiasts, and everyone in between – flock to this resort. Why? The five courses exceed anything you’ll find in your home town, with grounds, like The Ocean Course, used for every major PGA event and designed by such major architects as Tom Fazio, Gary Players, Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, and Clyde Johnston. Named by Golf Digest as the No. 1 golf resort in South Carolina, The Ocean Course represents the apex of what Kiawah has to offer, but Turtle Point, Oak Point, Cougar Point, and the recently-renovated

resort’s many programs. Instruction, lessons, clinics, and multi-day schools assist with developing a golfer’s skills, regardless of level or ability. As well, a walking caddie and tips from resident PGA Certified Class A professionals provide the help you need to ultimately score better on the course. The rest of the island promises the “best vacation at the best value,” starting with living accommodations. Travelers have a choice in where they stay. The Sanctuary combines a five-star experience with southern charm, while The Resort Villas and Private Homes, with the latter situated near the ocean, offer a choice of sizes, living arrangements, and special guest benefits. These facilities, named the No. 1 Family Resort in the U.S. and Canada by Travel + Leisure and receiving Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List Award, feature a range of world-class amenities and services, including access to pools, resort-owned restaurants, cashless payments, shops, the golf courses, and complimentary door-to-door transportation. Employees, for vacationers’ convenience, are on call 24-7. But what if you’re simply looking for a picturesque vacation destination to unwind? The Sanctuary Spa provides such a solution. The resort calls it a complete escape for the mind, body, and spirit, with inspiration taken from the South Carolina Lowcountry. This facet influences the spa’s signature treatments and services designed to rejuvenate the senses. Botanical extracts, seaweed, mud, and natural enzymes assist with such options as the stressreleasing Lowcountry Escape Spa Medley, personalized training, and the muscle-detoxifying Ocean Fossil Fusion and Athletic Recovery Massage.

All treatments, from nail and hair care to private classes and therapeutic massages, are held in a tranquil setting. Like the rest of the resort, the spa’s 12 rooms are heavily influenced by Southern heritage, flora, and charm. You’ll feel it as you start off relaxing in the mineral whirlpool, before transitioning to a steam room, and you’ll further sense the atmosphere as you finish in the garden-inspired Solarium. Or consider stopping by one of the world’s top tennis resorts, featuring two complexes for improving your game or simply playing a few rounds. The Roy Barth Tennis Center offers nine Har-Tru courts and three hard courts, and complementing this, the West Beach Tennis Club provides an additional 10 Har-Tru courts and two lighted hard courts. As of 2014, the resort presents 24 total courts. Like Kiawah’s golf courses, the tennis facilities present opportunities, such as programs, camps, round-robins, and private lessons, for adults and children alike to improve their skills. Certified professional coaches, under the direction of Roy Barth, assist with all classes. 10 miles present ample opportunities for leisure. As such, the resort has been recognized with the Premier Recreation Operation Award four times over the past five years for its eco-adventures, miles of trails, water sports, and wildlife watching activities for children, seniors, and everyone in between. Depending upon your vacation plans, you can send your children off to Kamp Kiawah, and you yourself can partake in the Triathlon or Marathon, sign up for fitness sessions, take an art class, explore with bike rental or paddling tours, go farther out onto the water with fishing or motorboat charters, or learn about the local wildlife with many nature programs. Throughout the day, more than a dozen restaurants open their doors for casual to formal dining, snacks through full meals. Locally-inspired cuisine incorporates seasonal ingredients from the Lowcountry’s lands and waters, with steaks, seafood, Italian, Southern cuisine, sushi, barbecue, and ice cream just some of the possibilities you’ll come across. Kiawah isn’t just that vacation paradise that’s close to home – it’s further perfect as a setting for events. Meetings, conferences, reunions, and weddings benefit from 35,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor 30 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

space, such as ballrooms, boardrooms, and hospitality suites. Corporate event planners often find the East Beach Conference Center, with its flexible space and central location, to be convenient, while longer retreats may want to book the Turtle Point Club House or Osprey Club House for their proximity to the golf course. For an all-day event, the Ocean Course Clubhouse presents 3,000 feet with a restaurant, bar, and veranda. On the casual side, Mingo Point’s outdoor location is prime for low-key entertainment and dining. But it’s not just the facilities and location proving to be a benefit; Kiawah essentially coordinates everything involved for a meeting, conference, or wedding. As you work with professional planners, take advantage of catering, group accommodations and entertainment, team building opportunities, floral and event design, A/V equipment, branded apparel and accessories, designed cakes, linens, and candles, and reduced guest room rates. With so many possibilities on one island, how can you take in it all? Kiawah’s guest packages provide a convenient solution, especially the Golf or Gourmet Escape, which offers accommodations and a choice of golf or dinner from November through February. Guests save approximately 45 percent while staying in a Private Villa or Sanctuary and receiving a 20-percent spa discount. Within this package deal, guests have multiple options. Champions Choice adds two rounds of golf or two dinners at any restaurants or a combination of one meal and one game to the standard accommodations. Players Choice has a similar plan, with rounds at Turtle Point, Oak Point, Osprey Point, or Cougar Point and meals for two at Jasmine Porch, Tomasso, or Cherrywood BBQ. As well, an extended, three-night stay provides a one-time $100 resort credit, and any stay of four nights or longer earns the traveler a $200 resort credit, a two-room category upgrade, a late checkout, and arrival amenity. ■

LUXE DINING BOSTON

50 Years of Dining Excellence: Top of the Hub Restaurant and Lounge I

f you’re seeking out Boston’s most heralded dining establishment, chances are you’ll be directed to Top of the Hub Restaurant and Lounge. Located in the city’s well-known Back Bay section, Top of the Hub sits on the 52nd floor of The Prudential Center – one of the skyline’s most iconic buildings and providing breathtaking panoramic views. A beautiful sight of the surrounding city can be seen from all points inside, be it in the Lounge, Restaurant, Bar, or private dining rooms. It’s said that, on a clear day, guests can see up to 80 miles in any direction. These days, Top of the Hub focuses on American cuisine, with an emphasis on quality regional fresh seafood, but its origins date back to 1965. “The Top’s Restaurant and Lounge always stay ahead of hospitality, entertainment and interior design trends to ensure that each guest enjoys meticulous and gracious attention to our cuisine, service, live jazz, spectacular atmosphere and personal experiences,” says Rosanne Pickard Mercer, one of the restaurant’s publicists. “The restaurant is unique in attracting residents and visitors, of all ages from all over the world, to enjoy socializing, dining, dancing, meetings and the most memorable occasions.” 2015 will be the dining establishment’s 50th Anniversary. As far as plans to celebrate the occasion, Mercer explains, “The Top of the Hub and its Skywalk are planning a wide variety of exciting activities during an entire year-long celebration of their 50th Anniversary.” Currently, guests have a choice of flexible seating in the Restaurant, Bar and the Lounge, which, combined, hold 329 guests. Lunch and dinner are offered each day, as well as Sunday brunch, with a Menu changing with the seasons. Outside of standard dining, the Lounge is known in the city for its live jazz entertainment, with performances and dancing seven nights per week. A Late-Night Menu along with of cocktails, fine wines, and champagnes accompany the experiences. As well, listeners can get an early start with the Jazz Brunch which can be enjoyed until 3 p.m. every Sunday. In addition to the standard dining spaces, Top of the Hub is designed with several private executive dining rooms. One on the Restaurant’s North Side overlooks the Charles River – one of Boston’s most popular and spectacular sights – and three on the South Side, each holding 20 to 36 guests, can be combined into one larger room for parties up to 80 people. But beyond the elegant facilities and ambiance, it’s the food which draws people from across New England and from all around the world. Executive Chef Mark J. Porcaro and Executive Pastry Chef Tommy Choi head the culinary team, with Porcaro meticulously planning the Restaurant’s seasonal Menus and for all food served for very Special Events. “What we enjoy eating and cooking changes with the seasons,” he explains in an interview with Clientele Luxury. “We try and make the most of the best produce and seafood available for the time of year. In Springtime, there are budding asparagus, pink rhubarb, waxy new potatoes, spring lamb, [and] fresh ramps. In Summer, sweet corn, raspberries, strawberries, and [the] most delicious fresh vine ripe 32 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

tomatoes. Autumn brings colorful squashes and pumpkins, apples and pears. Winter, savory, slow-cooked casseroles, winter greens, [and] more hearty, warming soul foods.” Porcaro then went onto say, “Another factor in our Menu development is what’s trending at the moment. We listen to what people are enjoying, sourcing out the freshest fish daily from vendors for the time of year and staying ahead of the curve with dining trends and creating new preparations and presentations.” All of these factors have earned Top of the Hub Awards of Excellence from Wine Spectator Magazine and Distinguished Restaurants of America. In the region, it was named TV Diner’s “One of New England’s Best Dining Locations” and Zagat says that they are “One of New England’s Best Dining Views.” As well, WHDH-TV called it the “Most Romantic Restaurant in Boston,” the Boston Herald listed it as “Tops for Engagements,” The Improper Bostonian named it for “Most Romantic Restaurant,” “Best Secret Rendezvous,” and “Best Drinks With A View,” The Boston Phoenix further called it “Best Romantic Restaurant,” and the Phantom Gourmet included it with “Great Ate: Romantic Restaurants.” The Travel Channel has called Top of the Hub “One of the World’s Most Romantic Dining Destinations.” ■

LUXE REAL ESTATE

Luxury Ranch Living in Montana D

os Marias, a one-of-a-kind property, is ideal for the most discerning buyer wishing the true Montana lifestyle. Situated on nearly 60 pristine acres just outside Bozeman, Montana, it must be experienced to be fully appreciated. A person’s initial viewing will require at least two hours, and a second and third visit is necessary to begin to absorb the special details, qualities and sensibilities that set this property apart, firmly placing it in the upper echelon of extraordinary estates. Dos Marias is perfectly sited on a central bluff of gentle undulating hills sandwiched in the bucolic Bridger Canyon between the mighty Bridger Mountains, Green Mountain, and Bangtail Mountains. It is approximately a 12 minute drive to historic downtown Bozeman or to the Bridger Bowl Ski Area. In 20 minutes you can be at either the Yellowstone Bozeman International Airport, or fly fishing the Yellowstone River. The ranch compound, designed by world renown architect Larry Pearson, is home to a hundred-strong elk herd, who calve each Spring in the tall grasses, and roam the meadows and nearby forests. Deer, coyotes, bears, the occasional moose, and eagles share this picturesque valley that is lush with habitat. Larry Pearson has established a reputation for integrating homes into the landscape, having their roof-lines and materials mirror and enhance the natural world. Reclaimed timbers, native stones, rusted and weathered corrugated metal, and the architecture itself is incorporated to achieve understated simplicity and timelessness. He draws from the local history to create enduring buildings that 34 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

speak to the soul of the place. An example of this is seen in the guest house and stable complex, with a continuous roof and breezeway separating the two functions. The building utilizes a reverse framing method that was the construction of choice for Montana granaries as it prevented grain from being trapped in the interior. A bump-up cupola in the center of the long expanse of the low-slung stable roof accents the pitch and glory of the background Bridger Mountains and balances the gabled roof-line of the two-story guest home. You’d swear the building has always been part of the landscape, rather than built in 2006. The main home and guest house/stables are sited to showcase the 360 degree views that encompass the entire face of the Bridger Mountains, stretching to the south and west into the Gallatin Valley, capturing the distant and quite dramatic Spanish Peaks, including Lone Mountain as a focal point, at the southernmost horizon of the Gallatin Valley. The Bridgers are immediate, seemingly so close you can reach your hand and touch them, while the eastern view is dominated by mountainous dense forests. Being Montana, the sky is immense and ever-changing, a masterpiece of natural art. Sitting on the deck off the great room of the main home, or the patio of the guest home, you feel you are literally in the center of the universe, with the structures present to embrace and shelter you, while the sky never ceases to enchant. Throughout the compound, the aesthetics rely on a seamless use of organic materials blended and banded with exposed industrial

steel beams, hand-forged metal hardware, hand-scrapped irregular width reclaimed planks, expanses of windows and glass doors, and layer upon layer of textures. The surrounding irrigated lawns meld into cement, flagstone, or gravel walks. Courtyards and patios are set off with large boulders from which either ageless timbers or metal beams arise to frame the structure. Native stone forms the transition from ground to timbers to roof, in places an apron width, while in other areas becoming an entire wall, utilized in both the interior and exterior. The two homes and stables, integrated with nature and built for easy care and maintenance in the alpine mountain setting, appear to have been on this site since Montana’s trapper and homesteader days. However, while the exteriors are rooted in Montana agrarian and territorial history, the interiors are crafted like an exquisite Asian spa, serene, natural, clean-lined and contemporary, always honoring the landscape and abundant natural light. No detail is happenstance, and everything is flawlessly balanced and harmonic. Each building retains its own function and character, yet is joined by materials and architectural integrity as a whole. Both residents and guests alike feel happy and honored to be here. The patios and deck roofs of both homes have support timbers arising from boulders, which harmonize with the flagstone, concrete, and gravel used in the landscaping and outdoor entertaining spaces. Interior and exterior color palettes are derived from the rocks, boulders, stones, and the neighboring mountains. The massiveness of the materials is continuously balanced and lightened by the extensive use of glass, in the form of glass French doors, abundant windows, and entire glass walls with sliding barn doors to frame the light and views. Interior and exterior spaces merge, especially in the breezeway entrance to the guest home in which the wide covered opening dividing the stables from the home are large outdoor entertaining areas and act as a frame to the Bridger Mountains. Ceilings vary from room-to-room, house to house, ranging from simple plaster to reclaimed wood. Some of the ceilings are vaulted, rising to 22 foot heights, adding to the open, airy, light feeling of the homes. The luxurious three bedroom main house features an exterior of wide-planked fir siding lapped on steel flashing combined with stone, copper, and metal. Resolutely framed, it is a meaty structure, softened by the billowing awning of the west-facing deck. It is marvelous to lounge on the deck overlooking the two trout-stocked lakes, the gurgling sound of water flowing down the hillside creek and between the lakes. You may even hear the bugling of elk while sitting on the deck or guest house patio while watching the western skies aflame in sunset colors. The inviting main home nestles into a gradual slope, providing both an upper and lower level entry. The primary floors are stained concrete with radiant heat, the neutral colored plaster walls have a

recessed metal baseboard, and ceilings are plaster with timber and metal beams. Contemporary fixtures are used throughout, from the lighting, hand wrought hardware, bathroom sinks and even frosted glass cabinet doors. The main floor master suite includes a fireplace set in stone, vaulted ceiling, sliding barn doors into the modern spa bath with a spacious shower and soaking tub set into a stone and wood deck. In both homes, the handmade metal spiral staircase with wide planked steps helps set the tone of creative approaches to an upscale and contemporary Montana ranch lifestyle. In the guest home, the lower floor family room extends beyond the upper floor kitchen/ living/great room, providing an indoor balcony feeling with the balcony railing and spiral staircase opening up the entire public spaces. A wall of south, north and west facing windows, encompassing the two floors up to the vaulted ceilings are spectacular, as is the “glass” office adjoining the great room kitchen, with its windows and views part of the whole. The main home has an oversized, attached 3 car garage built for large trucks and toys with an entrance into a private studio/exercise room, which also has its own exterior entry. The home has been sited and built with the knowledge that someone may wish to enlarge the home as it has a small footprint. An addition is easily executed. Both homes have gourmet kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances, natural stone counters, custom cabinetry, bar seating, and an open floor plan for friends and family to gather. Fireplaces are important features, as are flat screen televisions, surround audio sound systems that extend to the ample outdoor living areas, and a balance of public and private spaces. Designed for Montana, the mud rooms, coat and boot storage, and areas for “toy” storage is generous. All bedrooms are inviting and roomy, sophisticated, and enjoy sitting areas, views and privacy. One of the 3 bedrooms in each home is a designated “bunk” room with 3 built-in bunk beds. The other two bedrooms in the guest home have built-in platform beds that have a Zen feeling to them. Horses enjoy life here to the same degree of sophisticated luxury as the humans. The 4 stall stable is state-of-the-art, airy, roomy, and with a high pitched roof. Hitching posts, corrals, an arena with ideal sand footing, tack room, grain and hay storage, drains for showering and hosing off horses and gear, and large causeways for equipment are stylish integrated into the ranch complex. Horses do have to be willing to share their grass pastures and hayfields with the elk. The “back of the house” and systems are as impressive as the architecture and finishes. This property is offered for $4,945,000, listed by Sally Uhlmann & Mike Schlauch of Platinum Properties with PureWest Christie’s Luxury Real Estate in Bozeman, Montana info@suplatinum.com. ■ www.ClienteleLuxury.com | 37
