tarted by architect Richard Landry in 1987, the Landry Design Group has strived to develop homes that reflect an individual’s lifestyle and blend memories, aspirations, and unique experiences. The company’s extensive portfolio of global properties covers everything from classical estates to rural villas. What ties it all together is extreme attention to detail and quality. For the Berberian Residence, this notion is apparent. After the initial house had been demolished, Landry wanted to fully utilize the area’s distinctive landscaping and lawn. What resulted was a peaceful setting, of a winding driveway and bridge over a natural stream leading to a gated property. The architecture displays Modernism in nearly every sense of the word. At a glance, much of it appears simple and uncomplicated, composed of organic materials in a bluish-brown or green-gray hue. Landry selected color-coated stucco, metal panels, Pennsylvania blue stone, Portuguese limestone, wood, and glass to put the project together. Yet, the glass above all creates the ambiance. Landry utilized storefront glass, which responds to changing light. Added over two stories, it acts much like a lantern and complements many of the rooms’ open orientation. Smaller facets contribute to this sense, such as an open staircase and a wooden trellis suspended below a skylight. For the more closed, intimate spaces, the team created them out of stucco and stone. Wooden surfaces, in the kitchen, living room, and library give the property a warmer, more personal touch. Between this dichotomy, Landry aimed for fluidity, of one space flowing to the next without any defined boundary. Suspended ceilings and no base moldings enhanced this aspect by adding a sense of floating and buoyancy. This facet further benefits in showcasing a collection of modern art. Rather than incorporate the standard, angular gallery setting, Landry transitioned spaces while making use of works by Miro, Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Robert Graham. The pieces, essentially, become part of the home, rather than an accent or accessory. | 7

Landry, again, fused nature and architecture with Villa Del Lago, a 23,000 square foot property on four acres in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The team built it upon an existing flat pad located by an oak tree-covered hilltop. The Tuscan-influenced design takes advantage of the rural setting by a lake, providing views of Lake Sherwood and Santa Monica Mountain from every room. Simplicity gives the property a feeling of warmth and approachability – one that contrasts against the area’s intimidating surroundings. Private, semi-private, and public spaces flow together and are given cohesiveness through textures materials, such as a two-story stone wall and refined wood paneling. These materials, too, give the property some history. Landry incorporated reclaimed beams and tile from Italy, locally-cut stone, and stone floors once part of an abandoned French chateau. As a second note, they emphasize and segue into the property’s many environmentally-friendly elements. Along with the reclaimed or local materials, Villa Del Lago features solar panels concealed in the hills, an on-site well, re-circulated water system, gray water reclamation, LED lighting fixtures, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.■

Consumers’ biggest complaint about the Apple Watch? The lack of style. In the fall, LVMH tried to bridge that gap by introducing the Tag Heuer Connect, a smart watch merged with a luxurious, fashionable timepiece. LVMH used the Carrera watch as the foundation, adding titanium grade 2 casing, a sapphire screen, and vulcanized rubber for the exterior. The International Polo Club The 2016 Season S

Schultz Estate Blends History with Classic Southern Architecture Fort Myers Florida


t a quick glance, the property at 14000 Schultz Road appears like many Southern mansions – a brick and pillared home surrounded by its private park and manicured greenery. And, while the fact that the house directly looks down nine miles of waterways, and is adjacent to a wilderness preserve, is in itself certainly impressive, there’s also an impressive story behind this extraordinary riverfront equestrian estate. The Schultz Estate began with the three Schultz brothers, who moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., in the 1920s. Their early efforts set the path to becoming one of the major landowners in Lee County: They started a berry-growing farm, expanded to raise cattle, and then added gladiolas and potatoes. In the process, they purchased land at 25 cents per acre and eventually owned all of the riverfront from the Cape Coral Bridge to Ft. Myers Beach. Expansion led to great wealth over the years, and by the time Paul Schultz reached his 70s, he decided to create a large, Southern mansion-style home for himself and his wife, Dorothy. He selected

a location at Palmetto Point, essentially a small peninsula looking directly down the Caloosahatchee River, and worked with Grant Finger, a major commercial builder, to get the project off the ground in 1980. The background and commercial construction now define the Schultz Estate. For starters, the 11,932 square foot Main House sits on 5.9 acres and provides 230 feet of river frontage. The land as a whole stretches 435 feet along the Caloosahatchee riverfront, while the former gladiola farm has become the Gulf Harbor Yacht and Country Club. The marble is the most significant addition. You’ll find Carrera white marble added to multiple rooms, which the owner then accented with mirrors. The kitchen even features granite countertops, built to restaurant-grade standards. These play off finished wood cabinets and an open design.
