THE NEXT CHAPTER ‘DWTS’ Champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy Talks Career, Looks Toward the Future “A

re they or aren’t they?” The question surrounded the pairing of Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy and partner Meryl Davis on the recent Dancing With the Stars season. Extremely exact and responsive performances—closer to those of seasoned ballroom pros than what you typically see on the ABC show—stirred the rumors, and while to date the assumptions have yet to be confirmed, Chmerkovskiy and Davis took home the trophy on May 20th. Born in the Ukraine before emigrating to the U.S., Chmerkovskiy became a part of the DWTS cast for its second season, and with the exception of taking off during season six, has worked with a wide range of celebrities from actresses like Tia Carrere, Kirstie Alley, Debi Mazar, and Denise Richards to pop stars like Willa Ford and Melanie Brown to athletes like Davis, Hope Solo, and Misty May-Treanor. Clientele Luxury got a chance to speak with the dancing pro as the season was going on. Of some of his favorite moments during his extensive time on DWTS, he explains, “All of my partners are my best memories! Meryl Davis is more special, because with her I was able to achieve what I couldn’t with the others, but I cherish all of them just the same.” He then adds, “I gave each of them all of me and most reciprocated the same way—but I will always have one trophy, and there’s always going to be only one Meryl for me.” Over the years, Chmerkovskiy earned a “bad boy” reputation on the show, but Season 18 depicted a different side of him. During our interview, he attributes this to Davis and the discipline she gave him. “My thoughts about this season drastically changed the moment I met Meryl,” he says. “I showed up to work and ended up living the most memorable and creative three months of my life! Working with Meryl on any project and in any capacity is an honor and a privilege. I will never forget this experience, and I look forward to what our relationship can become.” Although the season’s officially over, the dancer continues to be involved with the DWTS franchise. Sponsorships and appearances fill a significant portion of his time, and when he’s not working out at the gym, he’s getting ready to judge the Indian version of Dancing With the Stars, a program known as Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa that’s been on the air since 2006.

Chmerkovskiy’s recent win marks just one of his many career accomplishments. After beginning dance lessons at the age of 4, his interest rapidly took off during his teens. While a skiing injury could’ve shut the door on his dreams, therapy, perseverance, and hard work took him through not just recovery but also many competition wins. Passion combined with business savvy resulted in Chmerkovskiy founding multiple dance schools: Rising Stars Academy, a youth program focused on ballroom dancing, and Dance With Me Studios, co-founded by Chmerkovskiy, his father Sasha, and friend Jhanna Volynets. Located in the greater New York area, Dance With Me now has four locations, including Stamford, Conn., Ridgefield, N.J., Long Island, and SoHo. “Dance With Me studios have been my passion since I was 17 years old,” Chmerkovskiy says. “I’m very proud of what we have been able to achieve over these years, and it’s only just the beginning.” Dance With Me’s faculty puts on a Broadway-level show each year, called SWAY. Regarding production, he explains, “It’s our way of showing off the talent that ales up our company!”

Dancing With the Stars has served as a platform for launching acting careers in recent years. Mostly notable, so far, is Julianne Hough’s film roles, and Chmerkovskiy appears to slowly be following in the same footsteps, with visits between New York and Los Angeles for gigs. So far, he has hosted a Ukrainian game show based on The Cube, starred in Broadway musical Forever Tango, and, in 2013, had a role on General Hospital. The latter two roles utilized his burgeoning acting abilities and strong dancing skills. Speaking about his future career plans over the next five years, he says, “Acting is at the center of my focus right now. I see myself becoming a working actor, but most importantly, I see myself being happy.” Still, even with all he has accomplished over the course of his career, his family remains his main inspiration: “Everyone in my family is a role model to me.” ■

Interview with Marilyn Hoffman of Hoffman International Properties M

arilyn Hoffman has been in the real estate business since she was 25, selling some of the most famous homes in Texas, including one of the largest estates in Texas, a $22 million Park Cities estate. She also successfully marketed a $35 million Texas mansion for a Saudi Prince. Several years into her career in real estate, she made the decision to delve into the art of selling luxury properties. Marilyn’s well-established real estate business, Hoffman International Properties, has seen much success over the years. Its expertise with selling regal estates and ranches has earned the company its esteemed reputation. It is this reputation that has professional athletes, highprofile company executives, and celebrities seeking out the company’s services from locations throughout the world. Marilyn chooses to run Hoffman International Properties differently than a typical real estate company. Her small, exclusive boutique business does not handle hundreds of listings at a time. Rather, Marilyn and her team carefully select a number of luxury properties to represent. This way, they can focus their efforts on a select number of luxury residences and work diligently to get them sold quickly and to the right buyer. Marilyn’s most famous sale to date was a massive property located on Lake Michigan. This 35,000-square-foot home had originally been listed for $13 million with another international real estate company, but did not sell. When Marilyn met with the seller to assess the property, she told the owner it was worth $20 million. A woman of her word, she sold the property to a buyer in a mere eight days for the full asking price; the bigger shock is that Marilyn sold the home sight unseen. Incredible sales such as this have earned Marilyn her revered reputation in the real estate market. While the majority of Hoffman International Properties listings are strewn throughout the nation, Marilyn enjoys representing international properties as well. She spends much of her time traveling to international events in various locations throughout of the world. Making appearances at the 14 |

Monaco Boat show, the Bal de la Mer in Monte Carlo, and the Salon du Cheval in Paris is just part of a day’s work. International buyers and sellers seek out Hoffman International Properties’ services due to the incredible international marketing plan on which Marilyn has worked diligently. By attending events in places such as China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and London, her name as a realtor is commonplace among the wealthy and successful. Over the years, Marilyn has enjoyed working with a variety of clients, from corporate CEOs and oil billionaires to celebrities. Mary Kay Ash, the late founder of the Mary Kay cosmetics business, bought her home from Marilyn. The most famous oil billionaire in Texas purchased a $10 million penthouse from Marilyn. Professional football legend Deion Sanders used Marilyn’s expertise to list his ranch for more than $20 million. One of the most recent buyers Marilyn had the pleasure to work with was the new owner of the Texas Rangers, who purchased the most expensive home sold in Fort Worth in the past 6 years. Media mogul, Merv Griffin, and Indy winner, Andy Granatelli, are also among Marilyn’s most famous clients. Through the business’ success, Marilyn has been fortunate enough to contribute her time and effort to a variety of charities. Rather than simply sitting in an office and calling potential donors or sending out mailings, Marilyn prides herself on taking a different approach. “We go to events where we can meet people that have the money and the billionaires are big supporters of charity,” says Marilyn. “We go to the top charity events all over the world.” One of the most recent events she supported this year was the Race to Erase MS (Multiple Sclerosis) charity gala in Los Angeles. Marilyn made a large donation for the auction and her brochures were placed in the gift bags for the events’ guests to take home with them upon their departure. With the top celebrities in the world attending, an innovative marketing strategy is utilized to help out a worthy cause, a winning scenario for both organization and Marilyn’s business.


Recently, Marilyn entered several horses in the Mayfest Challenge Arabian Horse Show in Fort Worth where she showed Ameratta VF, winning first in Stallion Halter, and he also earned the title of Reserve Champion Stallion.

The key to Hoffman International Properties’ success can be seen in its marketing plan. Rather than simply paying to place advertisements through various outlets, Marilyn insists that she attend them to be able to interact with potential clients and build relationships in person. This past September, Hoffman International Properties sponsored a Polo tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. A highlight of the event was the opportunity to have one of the world’s top polo players, Carlos Gracida, play on Marilyn’s team. In April of this year she sponsored a polo tournament in Palm Beach, with her team competing against the Ford Motor Company team. Always trying to take her business to the next level and surpass expectations, Marilyn won a prestigious marketing award, the Superstar Award, for setting a record in residential sales for the year, including selling golf star Lee Trevino’s Strait Lane estate and selling Lee his new home. In 2013, Hoffman International Properties also earned the Americas Property Award for Real Estate Agency, Texas and Real Estate Marketing, Americas from the International Property Awards in London.

The corporate headquarters for Hoffman International Properties in Dallas is Bossom Manor, an historic home in Dallas, built in 1922 by famous English architect Sir Alfred Bossom. Sir Bossom, later a member of Parliament, built over 300 skyscrapers in the country and built the Magnolia Building in Dallas, the largest skyscraper at that time in Dallas. When Marilyn has the opportunity to take some time for herself, she enjoys spending time at her family ranch in east Texas. She raises a number of Arabian horses at the ranch, 11 of which are national winners. Dunton River Camp Offers Spa, Safari, and History in the Rockies D

unton River Camp, located at the Cresto Ranch, some four miles down the river from Dunton town proper defies simple explanation. On one hand, eight luxurious canvas tents in the Colorado Rockies, all situated in an Alpine clearing near the Dolores River, feature a safaristyle camping experience. On another, each structure and the nearby town reflect Colorado’s Gold Rush history, with buildings intact from that era. Finally, the getaway takes you close to some of the most sought-after places for outdoor activities, dining, and spa treatments. The town of Dunton was established in 1885 as an unincorporated settlement in Dolores County. A mining camp with a downtown and homes, it saw its population eventually grow to 300 by the early 20th century, but poor location and transportation eventually turned it into a ghost town. Quickly, Dunton was reinvented as a cattle ranch in 1918, and by the ‘70s, it became a dude ranch for tourists. Although facilities closed in the early 1990s, Christoph Hentel purchased the property in 1994 and renovated it for the next seven years, turning it into a destination for the discerning traveler. Now, older buildings from the former Main Street create a rustic atmosphere for vacationers in the summer and fall. Dunton River Camp consists of a main lodge—a restored 19th century farmhouse now with a dining room—and a guest saloon featuring a wraparound deck facing the picturesque San Juan Mountains and Dolores River. For those staying overnight, each tent is built in 16- by 40-foot platforms with steel framework and waterrepellant and mildew-resistant cotton duck. Inside, you’ll find a kingsize bed, gas stove, spacious bathroom with a twin vanities and sixfoot soaking tub and shower, and a private lounging porch. Beyond the basics, Reliable Tent & Tipi designs the interiors with luxurious linens from L’aviva home, traditional Bolivian blankets, and unique furnishings, including artwork from in-house designer and manager Christina Rossi. All meals are served at a long antique table in the saloon’s center—a tradition dating back to the days of cattle outlaws. In fact, the dining’s such a delight that Bon Appétit named the camp one of the best destinations for food lovers. Along with your meal, be sure to take at least one visit to Sutcliffe Vineyards, where you’ll have a chance to taste John Sutcliffe’s wide array of wines. Or, to satiate your passions for the outdoors and wine tasting, reserve a spot on Sand Canyon Hike and Wine Tour. rand Estates Auction Company was founded 15 years ago by Stacy Kirk Reich and her mother, Val DeVine. Selling luxury real estate by auction was an innovative business venture at the time. When trying to sell their million-dollar waterfront family home on Lake Norman near Charlotte, NC, Val found the traditional realtor method didn’t market the upscale property to the unique buyers they needed to reach. “It was a luxurious multi-million dollar property, however, the home was remote and therefore not necessarily at the top of many agents list to present,” says Stacy.
