I

t began as one family's dream to create a place where memories could be made to last a lifetime. H

ome to over 700,000 residents, Seattle is one of the country’s fastest-growing major cities. And, it’s not hard to see why. In addition to its cultural touchstones throughout the decades, it’s a key player in the digital age, being home to both Microsoft’s and Amazon’s headquarters. Situated between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle has long kept the pace. Logging became the dominant industry in the early years, until the Alaskan Gold Rush transformed it into a regional port for those going northward. The 20th century saw Boeing move in, and following this, tech companies’ presence has started changing the city’s demographics, attracting a younger, more affluent crowd. As industries changed and shifted, so did the city’s culture. During the 20th century, several jazz clubs – spots where musicians like Ray Charles and Quincy Jones got their start – sprung up, and the ‘80s and ‘90s saw Seattle give birth to the Grunge sound, considered a revival for rock music, with bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden getting international attention. Beyond live music, Seattle is only second to New York for the number of equity theaters, which encompass everything from the Broadway-style productions at the 5th Avenue Theatre to roughly 100 fringe production companies. Much like theater and music, there’s no one place to go for an art exhibit. The Henry Art Gallery opened its doors in 1927, making it Washington’s oldest art museum, and six years later, the original Seattle Art Gallery followed. The latter shifted its location downtown in the early ‘90s and also currently operates the Olympic Sculpture

Park on the waterfront. However, beyond the iconic image of the Space Needle, nothing seems to identify Seattle more than the Pike Place Market, a public shopping center covering multiple city blocks. This historic arcade is considered one of the country’s oldest farmers markets, and here, you’ll have the chance to browse through and marvel at everything from fresh produce and baked breads to crafts and various collectibles. ■
