Located in the remote region of Far North Queensland, Haggerstone Island sits as a small paradise among the colorful corals and the Northern Great Barrier Reef’s untouched waters. Owners Roy and Anna Turner pioneered the island in 1985, arriving with nothing but a barge and encountering an uninhabited jungle island hundreds of miles from civilization. 30 years on, a resort has been created, with the villas – each with | 9

LUX TRAVEL a private beachfront, an open floor plan, thatching, natural timbers, and a sea view – blending seamlessly within the tropical landscape. Haggerstone Island offers a rugged yet luxurious experience, focused towards gourmet food and adventure in the surrounding ocean and islands. Haggerstone centers around the Main Pavilion, a facility characterized by a 50foot timber pole rising from the center of the timber floor and also by the 12 in. thick thatched grass roof, heavy wood beams and rafters, and a stone fireplace set into the exterior timber deck. Being the initial building Anna and Roy constructed and taking about five years to complete, it serves as the resort’s social gathering point. Here, you’ll find such essentials as a library, bar, wine cellar, lounge, dining area, an open-plan kitchen, and an observation deck. Architecturally, it borrows from the Pacific region: Alang Alang grass from Bali, driftwood supports, a Papuan canoe, crocodile heads, an ancient dinner gong. Closer to the ocean, the Jetty extends the island’s timber designs out onto the water, albeit in a bolder yet romantic setting. A perfect spot for watching the marine life at its most secluded, it utilizes aged timbers and a thatch roof. A round stone fireplace mimicking that of the Main Pavilion sits on the outer decking, with the water lapping below. It makes an ideal place to see both the beginning and end of the day: Why not stroll down to watch the dawn, or enjoy a glass of champagne while watching the sunset? With adventure being one of the island’s most powerful pulls, the surrounding waters serve as your introduction to the Great Barrier Reef’s marine life, from stingrays to turtles and alligator gar to the local sardine population. For the "hunter-gatherers” at heart, the reef offers another unparalleled experience – spearfishing the region’s abundant coral trout, fingermark, Spanish mackerel, and crayfish. After a day of exploration, guests sit down for a gourmet feast created from freshly caught or home-grown ingredients. And, it’s quite literally as fresh as it gets: Seafood is sourced from the ocean earlier that same day, while various herbs, fruits, and vegetables from the resort’s garden come together in exquisite and innovative meals. For the Turners, cultivating the orchard started in the resort's early days, and after much trial and error over the years, it grows some of the most quintessentially tropical ingredients – passionfruit, coconuts, butternut, bok choy, lemongrass, mango, and kafir lime, all of which are integral to the day’s three main meals. ■

ocated in Harads, a village with a population of 600 and a nearby restaurant, shop, and guesthouse, Treehotel was started by Kent Lindvall and Britta Jonsson-Lindvall, two Lapland natives who decided to stay close to their roots and create something unique within their home village. That started with an idea to restore an old retirement home and turn it into a guesthouse, originally called Britta’s Pensionat. While the endeavor wasn’t initially profitable, Britta enrolled in a training program focusing on form and function for the tourism industry, and from here, they decided to expand the guesthouse with a design project. This happening coincides with local filmmaker Jonas Selberg Augustsén, then an unknown, spending time with his crew in the guesthouse over one summer while working on Trädälskaren, or The Tree Lover. As the film materialized, the treehouse on which it focused expanded. As well, Kent, around this time, had been on a fishing trip in Russia with some of Sweden’s key architects - Bertil Harström, Thomas Sandell, and Mårten Cyren – who became interested in designing the hotel’s rooms. While each worked for competing firms, they agreed to design one room each, resulting in some of the Treehotel’s key features – a UFO, a bird’s nest, a cabin, a mirror cube, and a cone that changes from blue to orange.

Each of these points in the Treehotel’s history can be experienced today. Once you arrive, you check in at the original guesthouse, and from there, you proceed through the surrounding forest to your room, which, from the interior, offers a stunning view of the Lule River Valley. From here, each of the architecturally designed rooms provides various accommodations: double beds in the Mirror Cube and Cabin, double and single beds in the UFO and Bird’s Nest, double beds and two single loft beds in the Blue Cone, and two bedrooms, each with two beds, in the Dragon Fly. Damien Hirst has created three site-specific artworks for the restaurant, including a pair of exquisitely cast bronze mermaids, rendered in blue patina, positioned on either end of the bar; and a 15ft bronze relief panel by the artist, in which a mermaid is presented alongside a shark. The two fish tanks in The Coral Reef Room at Sexy Fish are truly magnificent. Measuring 6m and 4.5m in length, they are the largest live coral tanks known.
