ISLAND TIME The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort Reaching 10 Years of Exotic Luxury

ny time you picture a trip to the South Pacific, you envision a scene out of a movie: Clear blue waters flanking powdery white sands and swaying palms, all near thatched huts and coral reefs with a colorful array of tropical fish. This vision turns into a reality once you visit The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, one of the world’s most exclusive and unique resorts positioned optimally in French Polynesia. The resort opened in June 2006 and, this summer, has been celebrating its 10th anniversary. The concept pulls from Polynesia’s quintessential elements and has shaped the resort’s growth. Over its decade in existence, it attracted new restaurants specializing in Polynesian and Asianinfluenced dishes, added a spa, and started with a lagoonarium – a central body of water featuring tropical fish – that continues to expand. Now, any trip here takes you to 44 acres of lush landscapes, mostly composed of the same waters and sands you imagine, and the commanding presence of Mt. Otemanu in the background. In a recent statement about the resort’s anniversary, General Manager Richard Schilling said, “We have seen this resort grow into one of the top premier luxury resorts in the world over the course of the past 10 years, and I attribute our success to the dedicated, hard-working team, the delicious cuisine and variety of on-property restaurants and the unparalleled beauty and culture of French Polynesia. More and more travelers are discovering Bora Bora as a place to truly relax and unwind.” “Unwinding” is exactly what St. Regis is all about, with guests encouraged to relax and explore in an atmosphere of carefree elegance. The first hint of luxurious simplicity? Your living accommodations: The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort | 7

features 89 villas, all situated over the water. Interiors blend exotic woods with Polynesian art, while exteriors let you spend more time outdoors, with whirlpools and private swimming pools as an option. No matter the space you select – from the modest Overwater villas at roughly 1,550 feet to the singular Royal Estate, at 13,000 square feet – every area feels like a tranquil, secluded beach retreat. The variety offers one of the largest over-water accommodations in the South Seas. Inside, for your vacation, rooms come outfitted with the essentials: a minibar, WiFi access, DVD players with surround sound, Plasma screen TVs, a water boiler, and an outdoor shower. When it’s time to dine, St. Regis is home to four restaurants and further offers roundthe-clock dining in your villa. Lagoon by Jean-Georges makes the centerpiece: Over the water with views of Mt. Otemanu, this fine-dining establishment infuses meals with a combination of French and Asian characteristics. For another Pacific Rim delicacy, stop by Sushi Take, Bora Bora’s only Japanese restaurant. Dishes stick with the 8 |

standards, using fresh-caught seafood. Rounding out the options, Far Niente brings Italian influences to an array of comfort foods, while Te Pahu lets you start your day in a casual yet refined beach setting. Further, the latter is open weekly for Polynesian evening, an event with traditional foods and a Tahitian Tamure dance show. A visit to the South Pacific, however, shouldn’t be solely relegated to admiring the landscape. Travelers like yourself seek to be immersed in it, and within the resort’s grounds, featuring multiple beaches and the lagoonarium, that’s not difficult to do. For a relaxing, low-key day, spend your time between the interconnected Main Pool and Main Beach, a popular spot for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Or, to feel as if you’re in your own private setting, the Oasis Pool creates a more intimate atmosphere with its adults-only cabanas. But, your trip can easily go far beyond the immediate attractions. Through the resort, arrange for a trip of multiple Polynesian islands, a snorkeling cruise, or an exploration of a Tahitian cultured pearl farm. Or, for an adventure with more depth, scuba diving lets

you discover Bora Bora’s underwater world, which is home to manta rays, black tip, lemon sharks, and various tropical fish. On the water, a sailing excursion, by boat or a traditional Polynesian outrigger, lets you get to know the great blue seascape beyond, while fishing trips give you an opportunity to catch tuna, marlin, and mahi mahi. On land, art enthusiasts can schedule a private viewing of Alain Despert’s paintings and other contemporary works. Or, various tours – by jeep, helicopter, foot, or ATV – give you a unique and up-close perspective of Bora Bora’s landscape. Don’t forget to bring your camera for photos. After you’ve finished a day exploring the island and ocean, come by Spa Miri Miri by Clarins, on its own private island in the lagoonarium. Here, select from several plant-based Clarins products, as well as a menu influenced by Asian and Polynesian treatments, such as a Taurumi massage using Monoi oil. A Fitness Centre with Technogym equipment complements the offerings. Because of Bora Bora’s destination appeal, the resort includes the Bridal Boutique. While you’ll find a range of designer bridal dresses,

including gowns by Cecilie Melli, for rent or purchase, the boutique serves as a full event-planning service. Should you decide to hold your special day at the resort, a full-time wedding planner is there to create the setting and atmosphere, down to the food, flowers, and photography, of your choosing.

For its 10th anniversary, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is offering a travel package for 2017. Further for this occasion, Lagoon assembled a limited-time tasting menu of exclusive dishes prepared by JeanGeorges Vongerichten, such as Polynesian Uravena and the restaurant’s signature bloody Mary. â–

DELVAUX Givry Shoulder Bag

Fall’s transitional role often leads to incorporating something appropriate for the warmer months while taking into account the sturdier yet slouchier nature of the season. This purse, featuring a bright yellow hue playing off metal hardware, goes from one to the other effortlessly. Reminiscent of a summer sun yet perfectly apt as fall leaves, the yellow shade adds vibrancy to the unstructured rectangular cut. Yet, its casual character means you just need to grab it and go. $3,250

Stella McCartney Tweed Jacket

You’ll own the space – or, at least, feel that way – in this jacket juxtaposing casual and structured elements. The former, embodied by textured tweed material and contrasting polished buttons, depicts you as easy-going and not afraid to try something new. Yet, going along with the current oversized blazer trend, an angular, linear quality indicates you can clearly spot a striking line. $1,520

Gucci Soho Leather Top Handle Bag

Roksanda Ilincic Navy Pencil Sabra Dress

Salvatore Ferragamo Susi Nero Karung Heels

CHLOÉ Leather Boots

Gucci’s new Fall 2016 style veers back into logo territory, but the brand’s retro-influenced boldness continues, albeit subtly, with a solid hibiscus red body contrasting with a black handle and strap. Starting with this point, everything about this bag is clean and precise, from the curved lines to the embossed interlocking “G” logo on the front. If a Birkin’s too boring, this handbag occupies a similar space with a more distinctive alternative. $2,100

The pencil dress now owns the status of LBD for daytime wear. This ensemble not only fits the bill but can also transition to evening occasions with its contrast stripe down the side, wavy hem, and side slit. Just adjust from a pair of ankle boots to your most elegant heels. $1,570

Color-block your way to the top. Every woman has a set of statement heels in her closet – a pair that matches a pencil skirt with a print or striking look just as well as it does her favorite black skinny jeans. These fill that void with a three-color linear configuration accented by textured Italian leather, a pointed toe, and a stiletto heel. $725

14 |

Streamlined and sleek, with some hardware included, these leather boots are firmly grounded in classic style. From the tall, straight shaft to the chunky heel, everything about this Italian-made pair communicates timelessness. But, part of it still has its pulse on current trends, with multiple gold-toned buckles adding an edgy accent. $1,780

Kevyn Wynn owner of the Cocktail Slipper Collection which she calls a Labor of Love.

Kevyn Wynn Launches Successful Luxury Line of Cocktail Slippers After searching and finding no pair of stylish but comfortable

slippers, Kevyn Wynn, daughter of well-known Las Vegas hotelier Steve Wynn, decided to create her own. Finding she spent more time at home, Wynn sought out a pair of fashionable slippers, a style that would be comfortable yet still elegant, first at area boutiques and then online. Bulky, solely practical, or rugged options were all she managed to come across, so, in response, she reached out to the woman who provided slippers and robes to her family’s hotels with her own designs. The woman encouraged Wynn to have them made, and in the process, introduced her to someone who does shoe design. Called “cocktail slippers,” Wynn’s eponymous collection features a line of vintage-inspired, hand-stitched mule-style footwear that’s both a continuation of her own interest in shoes and a representation of her family’s entrepreneurial mindset and interest in fine living. With these points in mind, Wynn didn’t just have anyone create her debut collection, now out in stores. Rather, taking into account Italy’s centuries of footwear-crafting traditions, as well as designers’ 16 |

passion and skill, she sought out a couple with 30 years of experience in the industry. The result combines fine Italian fabrics with quality leather soles, many details, and, importantly, a comfortable fit. The collection, in general, bridges two ideals. One, even with a high-fashion look, they deliver just the right degree of comfort for lounging in or entertaining guests. Yet, they’re not entirely formal; any pair from the Kevyn Wynn Collection has a casual enough aesthetic that a woman can wear them while running errands or going out with friends. However, maintaining the balance, all styles cater to the luxury crowd, particularly women with highly refined taste. Wynn’s debut collection is divided into two parts. The first includes a line of everyday styles, the second covers bridal party slippers. Wynn designed them in white and light hues, with crystal and various appliqué embellishments appropriate for the occasion. Many styles, as well, pay homage to Wynn’s family members: A modern, casual number named after her daughter Zoe features a denim-and-leather combination, while another style inspired by her mother Elaine includes camel fabrication and beading. Another option, this one named after her sister Gillian, adds timeless crystal accents to a black velvet base. Wynn’s collection is already off to an auspicious start, getting coverage in a handful of well-known publications. Along with being sold online at, the shoes are available in American whole sizes 5 through 11 at select boutiques in the USA. ■

South Seas Island Resort Florida's Top Destination for Shelling and Observing Wildlife on White Sandy Beaches

20 |

he Gulf of Mexico’s crystal blue waters and white sands create the scenery at the South Seas Island Resort, located on Captiva Island, Florida. But, more than just a stunning sight to take in, the island’s east-towest orientation makes it one of the world’s top destinations for shelling, as well as observing wildlife and doing plenty of family-friendly onthe-water activities. Originally a key lime plantation, South Seas opened first as a fishing resort in 1946 and, over time, evolved into a 330-acre beach destination taking advantage of Captiva’s and nearby Sanibel Island’s landscape for beauty and recreation. Both possess some of the purest stretches of sand, where you can find 250 types of seashells, while the nearby landscape is home to 230 species of birds. With these combined characteristics, this setting presents an array of opportunities outdoors, from bike riding and jogging to wildlife encounters, water sports, and even beachfront golf. Speaking toward its penchant for quality service and variety, the resort won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence in 2015. For guests, South Seas presents a choice of 471 possible rooms, divided into three types. Harbourside Guestrooms, in North Pointe Village, overlook Pine Island Sound and Yacht Harbour. About 475 square feet each, they feature such luxury amenities as a large soaking tub and flat screen TV. Certain spaces may also include a king bed and a sitting area with a sleeper sofa. You’ll have a greater choice of configurations in the Condominiums, ranging from 850 to 3,400 square feet. These living spaces, to suit your group, offer one to three bedrooms, plus a living room, kitchen, and balcony. Further, they’re conveniently adjacent to many of the island’s activity areas, like the beach, marina, and tennis complex. Best for larger parties and presenting the most luxurious combinations available, the Private Homes and Specialty Condominium Rentals go above and beyond, with two to six bedroom spaces in a more secluded setting. These rooms offer a full kitchen and deck or screened balcony, in addition to a private pool. When it’s time to dine, there’s a restaurant for plenty of occasions. While traditional with its fare, the Harbourside Bar & Grill highlights Gulf seafood with its menu. Others, understanding that you’d want to grab something quick yet

delicious between activities, offer a choice of various sandwiches, salads, and burgers. A pizzeria, gourmet market and deli, and Caribbean-inspired cuisine round out the basics, while for socializing in the evenings, Crooked Snook is the resort’s new full-service tiki bar. But, whether your family’s looking for a fun vacation spot with something for everyone or you’re traveling with a group, what makes South Seas is the activities. On the grounds, 20 pools, in addition to two H2WHOA! Slides, give guests a place to swim and relax, but a short walk or drive lets you explore the Gulf’s quintessential aspects. The beach, perhaps, attracts the most guests. With its unique configuration, the coastline essentially acts like a shovel to scoop up shells from the region’s various mollusk species, including conchs, lightning whelks, cockles, murex, and coquinas. Many guests, in doing what the locals call the “Sanibel Stoop” or “Captiva Crouch” across the sands, take the time to find as many as they can. However, for those new to the region, navigating the sands can be a daunting task, so South Seas offers its own Shelling Concierge. Guided tours take guests weekly through the beach to show them the ropes of this shelling paradise. In the process, you’ll get to learn about basic bivalve and gastropod biology, become familiar with the area’s geography, and get tips about where to look for some of the rarest shells. Venture further into the water at the fullservice Yacht Harbour and Marina. With 2,400 feet of berthing, it’s the perfect fit for yachts up to 120 feet in length and offers dockage for boats 25 feet and under. Aren’t planning to bring a vessel? Rent a deck, pontoon, or center console boat from the resort, or start from here for a kayak tour, finishing charter, or waverunner tour. Guests, too, can maintain their fitness and beauty regimens – and even try something new. A fully furnished waterfront fitness center lets you gaze out at the Gulf as you strengthen or burn a few more calories, while the Kay Casperson Spa & Lifestyle Boutique sticks to standard beauty treatments in its 4,000-squarefoot full-service salon and spa. Through the “Primp, Play, and Pose” package, inspired by athletes in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, guests can take advantage of both services for a | 21

makeover, yoga classes, and tennis lessons. With all of these features taken into account, South Seas further accommodates weddings, events, and corporate retreats. With 31,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including 20,000 flexible square feet for meetings, it’s equally a destination for taking in the Gulf Coast’s beauty as it is for creating a memorable experience.

22 |

On-site coordinators assist with planning, while caterers, audiovisual equipment, and an in-house entertainment company are ready to adjust to your expectations. As the Gulf’s popularity continues to grow as a vacation destination, South Seas delivers what you expect in an event space and then opens up the door to its natural wonders. ■

UNWINDING ALONG THE GULF An Intimate, Waterfront Retreat - Edgewater Beach Hotel

any resorts line the Gulf coast, with some catering toward large crowds and others tailored to a more intimate experience. The Edgewater Beach Hotel, a Naples, Fla., mainstay for roughly 30 years now, veers more toward the latter quality. Simple, yet luxurious rooms overlook the natural scenery, while activities by the ocean, from paddle-boarding and kayaking to soaking up the sun, let couples, families, and vacationers of all types enjoy the white sands and blue waters for which the region is known. 24 |

This past season, Clientele Luxury spent two nights at the hotel. The resort started doing renovations this summer, with work continuing until fall, and the changes were evident in our room: The modern character now makes guests just feel a little more at home with a coastal, cozy feel. But, first, the smaller, boutique style takes you away from the business present at many resorts in the area. Rather, we found hospitality to be paramount: Upon entering, staff greeted us and offered a choice of sparkling champagne or cider, while the valet

was readily available to park our car. That same attentiveness coupled with an elegant atmosphere by the beach extended to our room. Newly renovated, it went above and beyond the standard features with rainfall shower heads, various hand-held devices, and an extra supply of pillows. Servers were ready when we needed anything, with drinks offered quickly and efficiently. In total, Edgewater’s designed with 125 suites, divided into four basic types. Featuring a neutral look enhanced by various pops of color, they blend luxury characteristics with

LUX HOTEL residential features, helping you make the most out of your stay. Inside, your one- or two-bedroom space lets you wind down with a flat screen TV and Wi-Fi access, while for daily tasks, you’ll have access to a kitchen with a full-size refrigerator and coffee maker. Once you go outside to the balcony, you’ll get a view of the beach, one of the pools, or the surrounding upscale neighborhood. In line with its more personal approach, Edgewater features one main restaurant – Coast – and a smaller option by the two pools, aptly titled Reflections. Coast bills itself as a comfortable beachfront restaurant serving internationally inspired Gulf cuisine. As you get to enjoy a unique spin on some of the region’s delicacies, you’ll have a choice of both indoor and outdoor dining, with candlelit dinners an option for special occasions. Reflections essentially functions as an extension of Coast, serving cocktails and the restaurant’s signature entrees in a casual setting closer to the pools.

However, the true draw to Edgewater is the seven miles of surrounding beach – a location of white sand dotted by swaying palms. This setting creates a versatile playground for both adults and children alike. On a lazy day, rent an umbrella for some shade to enjoy the scene, or for something active, opt to paddleboard, scuba dive, snorkel, sail, or wind surf in the water. Fishing trips, too, are an option for those wanting to go farther out. Or, to continue absorbing the scenery, rent a bike to ride up the coast, just as we did, all the way to the historic Naples Pier. As another option, two pools let you relax in the water and take in the surroundings. For children and families, the hotel further offers a few activities, such as bead-making and games by the pool. But, don’t feel restricted solely to the resort. A short drive takes you to Old Naples, as well as many other restaurants, nighttime hotspots, and upscale boutiques on Fifth Avenue. We are certain that you can and will unwind at this Beach Hotel. ■

A LUXURY TREASURE COAST ESCAPE Inside the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa

Take in Florida’s Treasure Coast with a

more intimate experience. Positioned right by the region’s soft sands and the Atlantic’s blue waters, the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa creates such an atmosphere with spacious yet luxury accommodations. This Kimpton Hotel understands that, when you’re by Florida’s coast, you want to spend as much of your time as you can outside. The property, adorned with palm trees, is close enough for you to grab a chair and umbrella to lounge on the beach and features an Oceanside pool. For anyone looking to stay, its facilities are equipped with 113 rooms, each with a West Indies-influenced vibe. Rooms play dark mahogany woods off neutral shades, while Atelier Bloem amenities, stone flooring, and granite countertops enhance the upscale atmosphere. Complimenting your living space, the hotel offers a complimentary 24-7 fitness 26 |

center. Here, come by for a yoga or strength training class, or exercise on your own in the gym. When it’s time to grab a meal, head over to Cobalt. With its atmosphere and menu inspired by the Treasure Coast, it serves several fresh seafood dishes and offers a choice of oceanfront dining spaces. More casual, Heaton’s Reef Bar & Grill is the place to stop for small plates, such as its popular lobster tacos, and cocktails. Its lounge later gives you a spot to relax, with its outdoor TVs to watch the game, fire pits, and live music four days per week. During the day, the ocean is sure to capture your attention. For enjoying the surroundings, the resort lets you grab a beach chair, umbrella, or cabana from Shark Bait. Or, see the water from another perspective by kayaking, boogie boarding, paddling, or snorkeling. Not far from the beach, a pool and Jacuzzi, surrounded by landscaping, let you cool off

and relax. Fountains up the elegance factor, while Heaton’s is close by for grabbing a drink. If you rejuvenate in other ways, the White Orchid Spa is there with a large array of full, medical-grade services. Wind down with a hydrotherapy soak, manicure or pedicure, or an exfoliating facial, while professionally trained specialists are there to offer oxygen lifts, Botox, and other aesthetic treatments. While families, couples, and anyone looking to get away can find that escape at the Vero Beach Hotel, its facilities further accommodate various occasions. 1,500 square feet of interior room, plus an additional 1,500 feet outdoors, offer versatile options for destination weddings and corporate events with up to 140 seated or 200 standing guests. To precisely round out your vision, staff can assist with beachside tents, beauty services at the spa, and planning a catered menu. ■

Boston's glittering skyline "Top of the Hub" located in the Prudential Center

THE HIGH POINT Boston’s Top of the Hub

ining options spanning multiple cuisines and atmospheres abound in Boston. Spending time in this corner of the Northeast essentially means you can go somewhere different each night, but for a truly high-end experience, both in terms of taste and sights, you’ll head to Top of the Hub, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. What’s turned it into one of Beantown’s top-tier dining institutions? Both the food and the views.

28 |

Located in the Prudential Tower 52 floors above Back Bay, Top of the Hub gives a clear picture of Boston’s glittering skyline, even at twilight. It’s said that, from any seat in the restaurant and lounge, you can see roughly 80 miles around the city in any direction. But, what you see is only part of the reason Top of the Hub has been around for so long. Its cuisine, with menus changing seasonally, has won several awards. These days, with award-winning Chef Stefan Jaraush and Executive Pastry Chef Tommy Choi behind the restaurant’s delicacies, going to Top of the Hub ends up being a tour for the taste buds. Jaraush’s own culinary skills are heavily influenced by a European continental upbringing, coupled with extensive training. He got inspired to go into the field at 15, and eventually worked under Chef Paul Bocuse at his three Michelin-star restaurant L’Auberge Du Pont de Collonges, near Lyon, France. Getting exposed to the French style

influenced Jaraush, who not only adopted the techniques but realized that fresh ingredients are key to producing a delicious meal. Jaraush moved to the U.S. in 1994 to work at the Ritz-Carlton Hotels for roughly the next decade, being exposed to a range of chefs and their techniques during the time. Later, he worked at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room and Bar, where he led the introduction and development of an American brassiere at the 4-star Oak Long Bar + Kitchen. A year later, he tried his own Executive Chef restaurant, Seasons 52. Stefan Jaraush Through distinctly New England ingredients, Jaraush adds dishes like his popular Fisherman’s Bowl to the menu, while Choi has created a unique spin on a popular New England dessert with his famous Boston cream pie. You’ll be able to taste their creations for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, late-night dining, and private functions.

With a comfortable yet sophisticated atmosphere, Top of the Hub has three basic portions: the 145-seat white tablecloth Restaurant, a 190-seat Lounge, and the Bar. Further, the facility’s equipped with three dining rooms considered one of the best places for corporate and private events in the city. With its reputation growing as a corporate event facility, Top of the Hub allows for multiple configurations of their private dining rooms to suit your occasion. Individually, each private room holds anywhere from 20 to 36 guests. For larger parties, the restaurant combines these three spaces to entertain up to 80 people. Anticipating a particularly large event? Ideal for full-service corporate, family, or benefit occasions, the SkyWalk offers the room for 50 to 600 sit-down guests or 1,000 for a cocktail party. It is the perfect location for dining and dancing with the backdrop of all Boston and beyond. Within the Boston area, Top of the Hub and the SkyWalk have turned into the premier location for social galas, weddings, cocktail receptions, and corporate parties. The size and versatility, along with the truly delectable cuisine, make it ideal for entertaining and serving guests in The Top's Dining Room and socializing with cocktails or fine wines and

lighter fare in the Lounge. The Lounge, too, has turned into the latenight place to be for those with discerning, sophisticated tastes – and it’s not just for the food and drinks. While the space is open for late-night dining, it features live entertainment every night, without a cover charge or tickets required; however, there is a $24 minimum in The Lounge after 8 p.m. Guests can come in for a meal, enjoy a few drinks, dance the night away, or enjoy quiet conversations. Currently, the Marty Ballou Trio is regularly appearing at Top of the Hub. An in-demand jazz musician, Ballou has appeared on Sax Gordon’s “Have Horn Will Travel,” David Maxwell’s “Maximum Blues Piano,” and Greg Piccolo’s “Homage” and performed with many of the industry’s legends. Stopping by the Lounge means you’ll be treated to a professional-level performance by Ballou on Sunday and Monday evenings, along with an outstanding variety of talented musicians each night of the week. During its years as one of Boston’s places to dine and be seen, Top of the Hub’s won several accolades from major magazines and other noted media. Wine Spectator gave them the Award of Excellence from 1998 through 2015, while Distinguished

Restaurants of North America awarded them a similar distinction from 1998 through 2015. Locally, Improper Bostonian lists them as the place for “Drinks with a View” and the “Most Romantic Restaurant.” This latter characteristic has since been echoed by the Boston Phoenix and the city’s WHDH-TV. Further, the restaurant has appeared on The Food Network, The Discovery Channel, The BBC, “Roker on the Road,” “Chronicle,” “TV Diner,” and “The Phantom Gourmet.” The Travel Channel calls Top of the Hub "One of the most romantic dining destinations in the world." ■ | 29

La Cité Du Vin

This clearly French perspective on wine isn’t a resort on its own, but for those planning a trip of the Bordeaux region, it’s a must-stop location for its immersive experience. Its sensorial approach to wine is incredibly multifaceted: Not only will you be able to taste and savor the beverage on a self-guided tour through 20 unique spaces, but the architecture, by Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazieres, is further based on the sight of swirling it around in your glass. 13,350 square meters covers its cultural significance across multiple civilizations and time periods. ■

St. Regis Bora Bora

Situated over 44 acres, this French Polynesian resort has some of the region’s most luxurious accommodations. Spend your vacation literally living over the water in a traditionally styled villa, while a 13,000 square foot Clarins spa, on the resort’s own lagoonarium, lets you explore a range of Asian and Polynesian beauty treatments. To dine, multiple restaurants overseen by some of the world’s top chefs blend in local ingredients, and for those wanting to get to know this South Pacific paradise better, there’s always sailing and bicycle rentals to discover the island on your own terms. ■

Jumeirah Dhevanafushi

Dubai-based hotel chain Jumeirah has emerged as a prominent global hospitality player for its extreme attention to luxury experiences. That approach extends to Dhevanafushi, its resort located on the Maldives’ south end. Familiar hospitality stretches across two islands, where stunning foliage, the Indian Ocean’s blue waters, and sandy beaches are only a step away. Take in the scene – and watch a morning sunrise – from your villa, and later, stimulate your senses at its restaurants and spa. ■

Royal Davui Island Resort

Situated by Fiji’s Beqa Lagoon, one of the South Pacific’s most intimate resorts creates an exclusive experience by only allowing a few guests at a time. 16 villas populate its grounds, where you’ll have the opportunity to take in the islands’ white sandy beaches and blue waters, whether you’re dining by a secluded sandbar or exploring some of the region’s top diving sites. ■

Kamalaya Koh Samui

Finding your way to wellness needs to start with a calm, soothing environment. Centering Kamalaya Koh Samui around a former Buddhist retreat creates such an atmosphere for programs covering detox, stress recovery, yoga, weight management, and achieving a healthier lifestyle. And, while a team of naturopaths customizes your experience there, this sanctuary along the Thai coast lets you take in the tropical setting through living accommodations ranging from suites to beachfront villas. ■ 30 |

Creating Cool Spaces W

hat some might describe as the quintessential Miami aesthetic moves indoors at the A Key Biscayne Penthouse – minus everything gaudy associated with the Florida city. Here, an ocean motif takes over – in both subtle and obvious ways – from the twotone wave pattern cascading over the rug to the solid white and blue color scheme given to the furniture. Yet, angles detract from the literalness of it all, while the occasional embellishment, like a detailed bronze frame, stands out intentionally, much like a buoy floating on the sea. ■

hen you want artwork to stand out, don’t overdo the rest of the room. That seems to be the strategy behind David Collins’ project, an Upper East Side condo with 28 developments, in addition to various public and communal areas. At a glance, the starkness and simplicity, of clear angles and a palette of neutral hues, pervade, giving each room an almost utilitarian feel. Yet, in essence, that’s almost the purpose: When two lines intersecting seems significant, a painting or print, then, immediately draws the eye. ■

ome consider Belize to reside in the crossroads of Central American and Caribbean cultural spheres. On one hand, the architecture and English colonial influence present in the islands pervade this nation, while the farther you go inland, Mayan ruins hint at its ancient history. But, in line with this dichotomy, Belize’s position creates the type of Caribbean vacation atmosphere travelers seek out but without the large resort crowds and touristy atmosphere. Because of these factors, the creators behind Ka’ana just announced Itz’ana, a resort and residential community located on the Placencia peninsula. News started circulating about Itz’ana back in the summer of 2015, as both a vacation destination and the perfect setting for purchasing an investment property. Part resort, the grounds include a central location with a restaurant and bar and give a stunning view of the nearby waters – both the ocean and a lagoon. However, its 39 residences, consisting of various cottages and villas, are available for purchase; from there, the resort will rent out and maintain the properties. These properties, perhaps, are Itz’ana’s strong point. Designed by Roberto de Oliveira Castro, single- and multi-story vacation homes range in size from 1,000 to 5,000 square feet. You’ll feel a sense of openness upon entering one, with its unstructured floor plans, tall windows, and vaulted ceilings. Outdoors, gardens, decks, and plunge pools beckon you to bask in the Caribbean coastal sun and enjoy the view. Interiors display the styling of New Yorkbased designer Samuel Amoia, who strived to bridge a quintessentially Central American character with a modern aesthetic and incorporated traditional materials throughout. Whether you’re looking to purchase or rent, Itz’ana’s community encompasses 21 villas and 18 cottages, all facing either body of water. At Itza’ana’s heart is the Great House, essentially its dining and social center. During the day, you’ll have the opportunity to take

a yoga class on the rooftop deck or utilize its spa. With upscale treatment rooms, in addition to a meditation space and a saltwater pool, the latter utilizes locally sourced botanicals and presents a menu of Mayan-influenced services. With its appearance inspired by colonial estates, the Great House is also home to the Limilia Restaurant. Overlooking the sea, this pop-up dining spot by Chef Mara Jernigan presents innovative seasonal menus, with dishes inspired by cuisine from Belize’s native Garifuna people. Freshness and locally sourced ingredients are particularly important, and whatever you order will include vegetables picked from the resort’s organic garden and seafood caught from nearby waters. Other attractions bring travelers to the Great House. A Hemingway-inspired library makes a perfect spot to wind down with a good book, while, in the evening, the Rum Room is open for cocktails. There, a private sommelier can guide you through a menu of various Latin American and Caribbean rums. But, a significant part – if not the entire reason – for a Caribbean vacation is enjoying the outdoors, and while a jungle and one of the world’s largest reefs aren’t far from Itz’ana, the facility itself presents its own on-thewater activities. At the full-service marina, for instance, the ocean is ripe for fishing, diving, snorkeling, and sailing, while eight slips nearby offer space for ships with up to an eight-foot draft and 65-foot length. Going just a bit farther out, Itz’ana’s Private Island Club gives you a different perspective – one a bit more remote. Schedule it during your vacation for a special getaway, all with the resort’s luxury amenities. As one of Central America’s most anticipated vacation destinations, Itz’ana already has its properties for sale on the market. The resort’s official grand opening will be announced at a later date. ■ | 37
