RABBI MENACHEM MENDEL SCHNEERSON The Rebbe revolutionized the global landscape through a singular vision of bringing G-D’s creation to perfection through goodness and kindness. Millions of people have been touched by his light and his love – directly or through the Shluchim, his personal emissaries who spread his message throughout the world. The Rebbe’s faith in each individual led him to recognize the potential for new and revitalized life where most had long given up hope. Against all odds, he relentlessly fanned the embers of Jewish observance in the Soviet Union during a half century of Communist oppression; the result of which is an unprecedented network of 2
schools, synagogues, and mikvaot in the former USSR. Where others saw only darkness, he saw the point of light which could be nurtured and magnified. He inspired countless people to make tzadakah a daily way of life. The Rebbe’s legacy is that his Shluchim and the hundreds of thousands he touched throughout the world carry his message and extend his embrace to the farthest reaches. By making us active participants in the perfection of G-d’s world, the Rebbe has empowered us as only a parent can empower his children. May the Rebbe’s sacred and primary mission to help bring about this perfection and the ultimate final Redemption be realized speedily and in our days.

On behalf of the many who benefit from the warmth and joy of the Jean Fischman Chabad Center of the Five Towns, I wish to thank you for attending this momentous occasion, celebrating twenty two years of strengthening the community. We pay tribute to our founder and leader, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, OB”M. The Rebbe’s selfless leadership and unconditional love for every Jew and every human being are the inspiration for all the activities at the Jean Fischman Chabad Center of the Five Towns, as well as at the 4,000 Chabad Centers that carry his timeless message to communities throughout the world. As we gather here tonight, I take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the many people who have contributed in so many ways to make these twenty-two years incredibly successful and enjoyable. Each of you is an integral part of the amazing success of Chabad of the Five Towns. I thank you for your friendship in the past and ask for your continued and increased support in the future so that many more people, young and old, from all walks of life will be able to grow and flourish together through our Chabad Center – a home away from home for everyone who walks through its doors. MERABI-MEIR AND MEDEYA-SARAH FAYNSHTEYN Guests of Honor Meir and Sarah Faynshteyn are proud members of Chabad of the Five Towns. Meir and Sarah moved to Five Towns five years ago with their four children: Frances, Tia, Demi, and Benjamin. They are honored to be recognized at the Chabad Annual Dinner. Meir and Sarah came to the United States in 1990 from Tbilisi, Georgia. In the former U.S.S.R. the family only celebrated High Holy Holidays. When they arrived to the United States they dreamed to make a comfortable life for their children and to celebrate and observe more holidays. They dreamed of a community such as the Chabad of the Five Towns. They joined Chabad of the Five Towns three years ago. They have attended many Chabad events with their family and have been pleased to join such a wonderful community. The Faynshteyn’s fondest memory of Rabbi Wolowik was the first time he and Meir met at Chabad and he offered Meir the brand new tzitzit that he had 4
just received. From that day forward, Meir never took those tzitzit off and continues to wear them to this day. This was a profound moment in Meir’s journey and the journey of his whole family. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Wolowik have played an integral part of Meir’s journey and the journey of the whole Faynshteyn family. They have welcomed them into their home and have shown them the utmost dedication, attention and care. Rabbi Wolowik has been there for defining moments in the lives of the whole family. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Wolowiik have done so much to welcome the Faynshteyn’s into the Chabad community for many life-changing and memorable events. Meir and Sarah would like to give special and sincere thanks to Rabbi and Rebbetzin Zalman and Chanie Wolowik, Meir and Hadassah Geisinsky for their unyielding dedication and hard work. They are involved in the lives of so many and the Faynshteyn family is grateful to continue to be a part of this community.

HARRY AND VIVIEN FINKELMAN Guests of Honor In life there are givers and there are receivers. Harry and Vivien are fortunate to have gotten the greatest gift of all… This is their story. Born “Chaim Tzvi Hershel” in Morocco, Harry and his sister Gitte were adopted by Holocaust survivors Simcha and Pearl Finkelman in 1959. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended the Yeshiva of Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. As a teenager, Harry spent a few years studying in Israel and made aliyah in the late 70’s. He volunteered for the Israeli Army, as a “chayal boded,” serving as a paratrooper and fighting in combat during the Shalom Hagalil War. Following his honorable discharge as a sergeant at the end of his service, Harry traveled around the world as many young Israelis seeking respite often do. He returned to the United States and joined his parents in their watch business, Horfine Inc. on 47th Street, learning to skillfully work with his hands and enjoying daily repartee with customers. Harry is retired and currently works in his studio as a wood carver, making Judaica items and small crafts. Vivien (Benezra) Finkelman was born in Brooklyn and attended Crown Heights Yeshiva, where her mother served as Executive Director, a rare post for a woman in Orthodox education in that time. A graduate of Brooklyn College, Vivien earned a Master’s Degree in special education from Adelphi University. She taught a range of subjects to special education students in the New York City public school system over a 38-year career, retiring in 2016.
Although they do not have children of their own, Harry and Vivien are blessed with eight nieces and nephews, 13 great nieces and nephews and two beautiful goddaughters. The Finkelmans’ relationship with Chabad of the Five Towns goes back more than 22 years to when Rabbi and Chanie Wolowik first came to Cedarhurst. They have played a part in numerous smachot—from brits and baby namings to bar and bat mitzvahs— where Harry has had the honor of sharing his artistic work and spiritual nourishment by presenting a handcrafted “yad” to each young person stepping into adulthood. One of Vivien’s favorite experiences is volunteering during Purim with the women of the Chabad community, lending her creative talents by wrapping up treats for the mishloach manot program. Harry and Vivien are grateful to have been chosen as honorees at this year’s dinner celebration and regard this special occasion as a way to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Rebbe (z’l) for being the mastermind who inspired Harry’s parents to pursue his adoption. In the zechut of Simcha Bunim and Pearl Basia Finkelman (z’l), and for all they endured during the Holocaust and their struggles to have children, may their neshamot have an aliyah. Harry and Vivien are so proud to be part of the Chabad family and offer sincere blessings of hakarat hatov to Rabbi and Chanie Wolowik for always being there for them and the entire community. 5

AVI AND JANET WEISS Guests of Honor Avi and Janet moved to Cedarhurst when they got married nearly 15 years ago. They were both immediately drawn to the warm and loving atmosphere that permeates Chabad of the Five Towns. Today, Avi and Janet along with their children, Yitzchak (13), Mendel (12), Batya (10), and Chana (8), are proud members of Chabad of the Five Towns.

Janet grew up in Canarsie, Brooklyn where she attended Yeshiva Ateres Yisroel and then HAFTR. Janet graduated from Stern College for Women and went on to receive a Masters in Speech Language Pathology from Lehman College. Today, Janet spends most of her waking hours helping her children with their homework. In her spare time, Janet manages to work full time as a speech therapist with the New York City Board of Education!
Avi grew up in Great Neck where he attended North Shore Hebrew Academy and then HANC. Avi went on to graduate from Hofstra University followed by Brooklyn Law School. When he’s not busy helping with homework or driving his kids to and from their various afterschool activities, Avi is a partner in Gutman Weiss, P.C., a real estate and construction law firm in Brooklyn. But in all seriousness, Avi and Janet are honored to be Jews with the privilege of raising a Jewish family. We draw tremendous strength and inspiration from the examples set by Rabbi Zalman and Rebbetzin Chanie Wolowik and Rabbi Meir and Rebbetzin Hadassah Geisinsky. It’s an honor for us to have the opportunity to play a role (no matter how small) in helping make this year’s dinner a success!

DANNY AND PERELA MERGI Gan Chamesh Parents of the Year Danny Mergi was raised in North Miami Beach, attended Skokie Yeshiva for HS, Ohr Dovid Israel, Yeshiva University, NYCPM for podiatry 2010. Englewood Hospital Residency 2012, Wyckoff Hospital Wound Care Fellowship 2013. In August 2016, he opened a private practice in Cedarhurst. Perela grew up in Boro Park and attended Machon HS and Brooklyn College. She is currently working as a personal organizer for residential and corporate clients. She also organizes for chesed (schools, shuls, and families that cannot afford but need the help). The Mergis moved to Woodmere from Staten Island five years ago and genuinely appreciate living in the growth oriented environment of the Five Towns!
home. When we got off the bus, my mother was waiting with a bag filled with sandwiches, cut up fruits and vegetables, and nosh for her plane ride home. My friend was floored that my mother had done this for a stranger, but for me, this was the norm.
The Mergis daven at Aish Kodesh and also have a kesher with Yeshiva Gedolah.
“I’ve come home from weddings and school functions at all hours of the night, and many times my father has someone with a foot propped up on the train table while he cares for an ailment (as a podiatrist). No matter the time of day or night, my parents open the front door with a smile, and are experts at making time for others no matter how busy their schedules are. When someone comes to live by us, they are added to the family count and treated the same as the rest of us kids by my parents.”
The Mergis are especially happy with their children: Racheli is in post HS seminary Machon Raaya in Yerushalayim. Simcha is in 10th grade at TMM. Moishy is in first grade in Siach Yitzchok. Chana Sara is in kindergarten at Bnos Bais Yaakov (she was formerly in the Gan Chamesh Yellow Room with Morah Michal!) Yakov is currently in the Gan Chamesh Red Room (Morah Laura, Morah Rivky, Morah Chavie!) Racheli describes her family: Two summers ago on the bus ride home from camp, I called my mother and told her that my seatmate would be going straight from the bus to the airport for a four hour flight
“My house has been dubbed ‘The Mergi Hotel’ by various family members, and not without reason. Anyone can call at any time, and a bed will be ready for them within an hour. My parents are constantly going to JFK to pick up/drop off relatives or to bring them food while they are waiting out their stopovers in the airport lounge. Growing up, I was constantly hearing ‘It is a berachah to be able to give.’
