Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show hospitality businesses are shedding jobs at an accelerated and alarming pace, with the sector accounting for the majority of employment reductions alongside retail since the chancellor’s autumn budget. Hospitality currently accounts for nearly half (45%) of all job losses, an increase
of 13,000 job losses in a month. The number of payrolled employees in hospitality dropped 108,000 in the year to July 2025, the largest decrease of any sector of the economy, ONS analysis also revealed. The data suggests operators are still grappling with the financial impact of April’s dual hit from increased employer National Insurance contributions and minimum wage rises.
