UNINTERRUPTED EDUCATION FROM NURSERY UNTIL UNIVERSITY East Village is London’s newest neighbourhood, but within it Chobham Academy is a school grounded in the best traditions of hard work, good manners, smart uniform and academic achievement. We see our students through their whole education, from nursery until university. For students entering the Academy in Year 7, this means the opportunity of a place in our Sixth Form where they will continue to be taught by the teachers they already know and respect. Class sizes are kept as small as possible and we have a firm emphasis on excellent behaviour so that students can learn in a calm and purposeful environment.

ADMISSIONS Chobham Academy is an independent school that is free to attend. There are 180 places in Year 7 and we will welcome students of all abilities and backgrounds. Ninety of these places are reserved for our own Year 6 students who will automatically transfer from the primary to secondary phase. Our admissions process and policy is available on our website.

WE BELIEVE THAT WHEN A SCHOOL GIVES STUDENTS CONFIDENCE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF EXCELLENCE, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY GO ON TO ACHIEVE.

A PERSONAL BEST CULTURE Teachers take the time to get to know and understand each student. Whether they need to be stretched, are struggling or are somewhere in the middle, we always work to inspire the best in them. There are six Chobham Academy values that define the way in which our students learn and behave: • Excellence: Be exceptional in everything we do • Respect: Be dedicated to positive relationships • Integrity: Be true to our word • Innovation: Be challenging in our approach • Collaboration: Be one team • Trust: Be open and transparent

A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT Children learn best when their school environment is safe, inclusive and welcoming. We have a culture of mutual respect between students and staff and zero tolerance of bullying in any form. To help promote a “small school environment” we have a House system. Students are placed into one of our six Houses, each of which is led by a Head of House. We run all manner of Inter-House competitions and students are encouraged to win points for their House through good attendance, excellent behaviour and positive contributions to Academy life. Our Houses are named after leading figures from past and present who are able to inspire and motivate our students: Rosalind Franklin – Scientist and DNA pioneer Labaina Himid – Artist and creator Chimamanda Adichie – Writer Roger Bannister – Athlete and Doctor Srinvasa Ramanajun – Mathematician Nelson Mandela – Statesman

WE PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION WHICH GIVES THEM THE DRIVE, DETERMINATION AND ABILITY TO SUCCEED NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.

BRINGING LEARNING ALIVE The curriculum is personalised and challenging. There is a clear emphasis on literacy and numeracy. The Academy follows the Singapore maths curriculum used by many of Britain’s top schools and, for literacy, the well-established Harris WORD programme.

University coaching starts from the time that students begin choosing their GCSE options, so that they make good decisions early on about their education. Through the Harris Federation’s links with Oriel College, Oxford and Harris Manchester College, Oxford, students are also able to join our Oxbridge mentoring scheme.

The core Chobham Academy offer leads towards the well-respected and highly academic English Baccalaureate, with good GCSE passes in English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History or Geography and a Modern Foreign Language – Spanish, French or Mandarin.

But learning does not begin and end at the Academy gates. Students regularly participate in trips, work placements, activity days and Master Classes in all manner of subjects. In addition to what they learn in the classroom, these initiatives help to bring learning alive.

Some of our other subjects include Art, Design Technology, Religious Education, Drama, ICT, PE and Dance, PSHE/Citizenship and Music.

We also emphasise the importance of learning at home and will expect the support of parents in helping to make this learning as valuable as possible.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Our broad range of extracurricular activities includes art, drama and debating societies and a range of choirs, bands and orchestras. We have three hours of timetabled enrichment on offer to students every week. Sailing, tennis, chess, dance, netball, sports leaders and trampolining are just some of the sporting activities students are able to try their hand at. Students who want to are also able to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and Outward Bound Courses. We want every student to have the chance to shine. Whenever there is demand for a new club or activity, we always try to find a way to make it happen.

AN ASTONISHING CAMPUS Our main building is circular in shape and light, bright and airy throughout – often with floor to ceiling windows in classrooms.

There is a fabulous theatre, a large sports hall equipped for everything from dance to basketball, a suite of music rooms and a lecture hall for our Sixth Formers.

While the whole Academy works together as one, students of different age groups have their own entrances and exits, their own classrooms and toilets and their own playgrounds.

Outside there are playing fields, tennis courts and playgrounds for different age groups which have lots of games and equipment for students to use during break and lunchtimes. With its location in the East Village, the Academy has easy access to all manner of magnificent sports facilities in the Olympic Park.

There is a panoramic roof terrace from which students and staff can see and be inspired by many of London’s most iconic buildings as well as, in the immediate vicinity, the whole of East Village.

STRONG GOVERNANCE We are accountable to an Academy Governing Body (AGB). The AGB is an independent body and is responsible, with the Principal, for setting and monitoring the educational direction of the Academy and the targets to be achieved over time. The AGB includes representation from the teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and the community. The AGB is Chaired by Mr Alan Bates, who writes: “As a Project Director for Lend Lease on the Athletes Village, I was closely involved with the development of Chobham Academy. I am determined that it will help develop happy, well-educated children with the desire and drive to succeed.” To contact our Chair of Governors, please write to him via Chobham Academy – the address is at the back of this prospectus.

THE HARRIS FEDERATION Our academy is run by the Harris Federation, a not-for-profit charity with nearly 30 years’ experience of running happy and successful primary and secondary schools in and around London. The Harris Federation has an exceptional track record with academic progress far greater than the national average. Every Harris academy so far inspected by Ofsted is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, with the majority rated ‘outstanding’. The founder and Chairman of the Harris Federation is Lord Harris of Peckham. His vision of delivering happy and successful education is brought to life by an excellent team of teachers and leaders. As well as joint working between the teachers at our academies, there are many shared experiences for our students. These include federation-wide sports days at the National Sports Centre; Harris Experience, a unique programme that readies our most able students for life at top universities; and inter-academy events such as one-to-one reading partnerships between our primary and secondary schools, World Maths Day and Debate Mate. You can follow the Harris Federation on Twitter: @HarrisFed.

EACH SUMMER FOR SPORTS DAY, THE HARRIS FEDERATION HIRES THE CRYSTAL PALACE SPORTS STADIUM. WITH WELL OVER 10,000 STUDENTS AND STAFF SPECTATORS IN ATTENDANCE, ACADEMIES COMPETE IN TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS.

OUR SPONSORS CHOBHAM ACADEMY IS A BRAND NEW SCHOOL WITH DRIVE AND AMBITION. IT IS SPONSORED BY LEND LEASE, WHICH WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF EAST VILLAGE AND IS RUN BY THE HARRIS FEDERATION, A CHARITY WITH A LONG AND OUTSTANDING TRACK RECORD IN EDUCATION.

From the very first days of our planning for Chobham Academy, our objective was to create a school that would be a focal point for families in East Village and the surrounding neighbourhoods for generations to come. How did we go about putting this in place? Primarily, we created a spectacular building providing a wonderful learning environment that helps to make sure that students of all ages enjoy coming to school and get the most out of every moment of their education. And secondly, we have the Harris Federation leading education at the Academy – you are able to read about their outstanding track record on their website. All the pieces are in place for Chobham Academy to have an outstanding future. I hope that when you read this prospectus you will share our enthusiasm for what is to come and you choose Chobham Academy for your child’s education. Mr Dan Labbad Chief Executive Europe, Lend Lease

The Harris Federation was established by Lord Harris of Peckham, who is also a sponsor of Chobham Academy. Chobham Academy is a school with a highly aspirational culture. Teachers and leaders are chosen for their unrelentingly high expectations of every student. We have always found that students thrive when their school encourages traditional values: good manners, strong discipline and smart uniform. These values encapsulate the ethos at Chobham Academy and they are combined with the very best of modern teaching and technology. Chobham Academy builds on twenty five years of experience within the Harris Federation and an exceptional track record in London education. We have in Lend Lease a superb partner, wholly committed to ensuring that the Academy excels. I hope you will attend our Admission Events with your son or daughter, where everyone at the Academy will be looking forward to meeting you. Sir Daniel Moynihan Ed.D, M.A., B.Sc. (Econ) Chief Executive of the Harris Federation

Our third Academy sponsor is Nigel Hugill who was the original driving force behind the transformation of this area, including conceiving the East Village. A former Chair of Lend Lease Europe, Mr Hugill championed the design and development of Chobham Academy for local children on a single campus and across all age groups. In addition to his on-going business interests, Mr Hugill is Chairman of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the respected urban think tank, Centre for Cities; Council member of the London School of Economics and Chair of the Committee for the Redevelopment of Tate Britain on Millbank. Mr Hugill writes: “The wall outside Chobham Academy is engraved with the famous words of the poet, Alfred Tennyson: ‘To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield’. We hope students of all ages draw inspiration from the strength of that conviction and come to recognise the sustaining values of hard work and perseverance. Taking advantage of what I believe to be genuinely world class facilities, Harris have created a curriculum which affords our students every opportunity to maximise their potential. Chobham Academy is a wonderful place to come to learn and to grow. Quite the best kind of Olympic legacy and one of which Tennyson could not but approve.”
