Chicago’s Christmas Tree Ships by Jo Anne Warren, Master Gardener, Tree Hugger “The loss of no vessel on the Great Lakes aroused more sympathy than that of the Rouse Simmons, known as the Christmas Tree Ship.”—Sturgeon Bay Advocate, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, August 26, 1927.
Fifteen years after the famous Christmas tree ship went down in a storm on Lake Michigan, November 23, 1912, it was still news in Sturgeon Bay. The story begins in the late 18th C. with the large number of German immigrants in Chicago who had brought their carefully packed, treasured Christmas ornaments in
The Rouse Simmons was the original “Christmas Tree Ship” that came to Chicago at the beginning of the holiday season for over 30 years in the early 1900s. The ship was a three-masted schooner that was easily recognized by waiting crowds when they saw a Christmas tree tied to her main mast and her decks loaded with trees destined for Chicago families.

Catering to this market were sailing ship captains capable of bringing huge loads of cut trees from what was the nearest source—upper Michigan—300 miles along the north-south Lake Michigan, renowned for its dangerous storms. In 1912, Captain Herman Schuenemann, known as “Captain
Santa,” left Thompson, Michigan, near Manistique, in his ship “The Rouse Simmons,” a 3-masted schooner, fully loaded with 5,500 trees, bound for Navy Pier in Chicago, a week-long trip. The ship went down with all 17 hands the next day in a windy snowstorm, one of four that day. Capt. Schuenemann (1865-1912) was a good sailor, with a soft heart, who sailed a ship built in 1868 in Milwaukee. He gave away hundreds of trees to those too poor to buy. He sold the trees right off the ship. He went down in his 25th year—a good sailor. In 2000 the tradition has been revived by the U.S. Coast Guard, bringing the cutter “Mackinaw” into Navy Pier loaded with trees, arriving this year on Dec. 6, and began offloading next day by local youth, including Sea Cadets, Venture Crews, Sea Scouts, and Young Marines. The trees will be delivered to more than a thousand deserving families throughout the Chicago area by Ada S.

Time to Get in Shape Another new business has just opened on the Avenue to replace the lingerie shop in the 300 block of Fairfield. We just had a ribbon cutting ceremony December 4 for Energi, the new yoga studio. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to sign up for one of the classes. Bellevue native Michelle Madden (nee Reynolds) is the owner of Energi. A lot of folks in Bellevue know Michelle. We wish the best in her new endeavor. Between L.A. Fitness, QFit--which is next door to Energi at 336 Fairfield-and now this new yoga studio, you have no excuse for not making the New Year healthier and happier. Get busy! Ring-a-ding-ding App for Safety Ring Doorbells now has a new app called “Neighbors.” This app allows you to see video clips from other Ring Doorbells and provides alerts immediately about crime in your area. At this time of the year, package thefts have been one of the most common events recorded. The homeowner can view a package theft while at work and then choose to send it to our Police Department. Within minutes of this happening, homeowners in the system also decide how big an area he or she wants to receive an alert. You can also choose a two-block area around your house or a one-mile area, your decision to choose. Whenever something happens within that area to a neighbor, you all receive the alert. The only way police can view the video is when a homeowner shares it with the police. Get Into the BED and Shop Until You Drop The kick-off for the Bellevue Entertainment District (“BED”) was far better than we could have imagined. We owe much of our success to Jay Fossett and Danielle Bell of Strategic Advisors who did a fantastic job of drafting our press release. By the way, Danielle is the daughter of Taylor Mill Mayor Dan Bell. Jay is a former City Manager of Covington. They did this for Bellevue, no charge.
ticles were to be found everywhere from social media to news organizations. Three of the local television stations came to Bellevue and filmed for a couple of hours each. During the television interviews, I made sure to mention that it coincided with our annual Christmas Walk. The Northern Kentucky Tribune and River City News both ran great articles with pictures. They are consistently there for us when we need them. I noticed that there were more men walking around with wives and girlfriends than in the past years. They all seemed to have one thing in common. They were ally carrying their favorite alcoholic drink in the BED cups while shopping. There was not one mention in the news about the MainStrasse district in Covington, only Bellevue. Our City Attorney Dave Fessler was instrumental in developing the BED program after studying other entertainment districts and looking at what other cities are doing. It was followed by our City Administrator Frank Warnock going to Maysville to check out its entertainment district there. They reviewed and scrutinized various cities’ approaches to entertainment districts. It did not take much convincing to talk the City council members and me into creating our own entertainment district. A number of planning meetings prior to the BED being approved. The committee included City Attorney Dave, City Administrator Frank, City Clerk Mary Scott, Community Development Director Jody Robinson, Police Chief Leland Estepp, Fire Chief Chris Adkins and myself. We tried to be prudent and careful in our approach. Remember: The times and days for allowing the use of the BED cups are noon to 10 p.m. Thursday

Oh, yes, after lying on the bottom 59 years, a scuba diver named Kent Bellrichard, searching for another shipwreck, discovered the ruins of Schuenemann’s vessel 165 feet below the surface of Lake Michigan, just north of Two Rivers. Divers have been down several times and brought up artifacts. They report that the trees bundled on board and below deck – still have their needles!

Holiday Open House and More The Library
Get in the holiday spirit with food, entertainment and a visit from Santa as all four branches of Campbell County Public Library present free Holiday Open House events. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Newport branch (901 East Sixth St.) will host its Open House noon-3 pm. There will be a holiday craft room with crafts for all ages, plus holiday and winter party games. Happy Holidays
by Alvena Stanfield “Happy Holidays” we hear as we make our way through crowds of shoppers, usually waiting to pay, while parents fuss at their children, and most of us are exhausted from before Thanksgiving to two weeks after New Year. So, maybe it would be a good tradition to begin what the accountants do in July. They prepare a “Look Back” for their clients, January to June.
The Look Back reviews what’s coming in, going out and future needs. We and our families can benefit from that in December too. “Coming in,” isn’t just money. It’s our emotional investment in those we share our lives with too. Holidays are a great time for hugs and mending hurt feelings. “Going out” seems to be both stretching beyond ourselves financially and at the same time adding so much mental and physical

through Saturday; the rules are on the BED cups, at participating business entrances and street signage; and, that participating is voluntary—if a business owner does not want BED cups in his or her business, they don’t have to allow it. Please don’t be rude if you’re asked to leave your BED cup out of a business. Say, thank you, and take the cup out of the store; then, go back in and shop. We’re trying to enhance our local businesses chance for success. We’re trying new ideas. Utmost here is to be clean and safe, but we want to stand out and be the best city we can be. The BED program is an experiment. Let’s give it a try and see if it will work. Ambassador Visits We have established the Bellevue Ambassadors’ Club. At least once a month, Frank and I visit a business or school or institution in Bellevue. Our purpose is to simply reach out and let them know we’re here and try to understand what we need to do to do better. We’ve implemented numerous changes as a result of our visits. We ate lunch at the Bellevue High School with Dr. Robb Smith. We had a very interesting visit with Ken Grause of Pilot Lumber. We met with Pat Patel of the Bellevue Commons. We met with Steve Crawford of Assured Partners. And, Jeff, Mallory and Whitney Fisher of One Stop. And, others. Most recently, we met with John Stiles of the Party Source. We took a tour. What an amazing place. They are an important friend to Bellevue. They contribute to our annual Art
extras we feel like we need a break. Relax, we do. A glance at our future needs can be answered if we slow down and take a peek at our past six months, July to now. Can we find places to make our and our families’ lives better by avoiding the bumps in the road we hit over those six months? My grandmother used to say “A stitch in time saves nine.” Holidays are a good time to stitch what needs it so we can live and enjoy nine stitches better.

in the Park event, and other events in Bellevue. They have at least 60 full-time employees, and the majority of them in Bellevue and Dayton. The humidor in the Party Source is a multi-million dollar business. They have the largest climate controlled wine storage in the state. The prices and variety of product there is fantastic. They are a great asset for the City, and we appreciate all they do. Merry Christmas From City Staff It has almost been one year since I took office as Mayor of the City. There was nothing fun or even pleasant for most of the first couple of months. First off, I have never been a Mayor. I had a lot to learn. Second, the City was confronted with a number of serious challenges, to say the least. We put our heads down, and got to work. We re-established a working Code Board, hired professional engineers to manage Lincoln Road, the FEMA Hillside Stabilization Project, road projects, traffic issues and other infrastructure projects. We focused on grant applications. We undertook visioning with our elected leaders and City staff. We created goals. We established weekly staff meetings to open up communication and efficiencies between departments. We talk freely and openly at these meetings and at times disagree, but agree to disagree. I have opinions, but I try to listen and be flexible and understand. We are engaging in an ongoing effort to make it easier to do business in Bellevue. I can now honestly say

that each and every employee of our City is working hard for you and is very dedicated to the City and their jobs. We’re a small but efficient engine. Just recently, Frank and I were leaving for a meeting at Southbank. We received a call that there was some glass in the street. The Public Services Department members were at a training session and unavailable. Assistant City Clerk Lois McBee volunteered to go clean it up. And, members of our Police Department agreed to do that, too. Frank or I would have done it, too. Teamwork is a good word to describe the attitude present at City Hall today. We are here for you. You don’t have to wait for a Council meeting to bring a problem to the City’s attention. If you have a problem, just call Frank instead of me. If you want to let us know how great we’re doing, call me! (Just kidding). So, from everyone here at City Hall—our City Council member, and City staff—we wish you a very Merry Christmas.

BHS Athletic History by Coach Mike Swauger
We are proud to continue “BHS Athletic History” it is a monthly feature. All the information and work to produce this column was provided by Coach Mike Swauger.
The Coaches
Carlos “Skip” SasseTrack Coach, 1958-1963. Cross Country Coach, 1958 and 1959. Skip Sasse is a 1954 graduate of Bellevue High School where he participated In basketball, tennis, cross country, and track. Upon graduation from Centre College in 1958 Coach Sasse returned to Bellevue and served as an assistant in football and basketball and assumed the duties of head track coach. Between 1958 thru the 1963 season he built a powerhouse track and field program. His teams won 50 meets and lost 4. Coach founded the Bellevue Invitational Track
and Field Meet which grew into one of the most prestigious events in the state of Kentucky. Coach Sasse was also one of the leading advocates for the classification of track and field in Kentucky. (Classification began in 1966) Moving to Florida he enjoyed a legendary career as a coach and school administrator. in Track and Field his teams won 211 meets while only losing 14. Skip is a member of the Florida and Bellevue Hall of Fame. John Gross- Basketball Coach, 1968-1973. Baseball Coach, 19691973. Following a successful playing career at Newport Catholic High School, John Gross began his head basketball coaching career with the Tigers in 1968. In his 5 seasons with the black and gold Coach Gross re-

corded 4 winning seasons, 2 conference titles and 2 regional appearances. His 1972-73 team won 19 games and were Champions of the 1st Bellevue Invitational Tournament. John was also named NKAC Coach of the Year with the Tigers. He also coached prolific scorer and rebounder, Bill Nagel during that first season. Bill led Northern Kentucky in scoring and rebounding during that year. Coach Gross moved on to Newport Catholic where he won Regional Championships in his first two seasons, 1974 and 1975. His final coaching stop was with the Newport Wildcats. John retired from the Newport System as an administrator, serving as Middle School Principal. He is a member of the NKADA, and Northern Ky Sports Hall of Fame.

in football and All-Stater who also earned a scholarship to UK. In basketball he scored 1209 points in 3 seasons, averaging 24.4 points per game during the 196061 season, and a school record 40 points against Dixie in a single game. In track Jim set a school record in the discus while finishing as State-Runner-up. Dan Laplam- 1962Dan was a 3- sport for the Tigers from 1958-1962. In football he was All-Conference and one of the finest punters in the state. The ball often got lost in the lights of the Stadium. On the hardwood the All-Conference performer broke the school single game scoring record with 41 against Dayton. In track Dan was the premier long distance runner in Northern Ky. He was undefeated in the 880 and lost one mile during his senior season. Jim Cavana- 1963- Jim was an All-Conference end in football. He battled on the hardwood during basketball season and was a fine trackster in the spring. It was in the pool where he excelled and set the gold standard. He was a 3rd grader on the team when swimming made a return in 1954. Starting in the 4th grade, Jim won the State Diving Competition 8 out of 9 years. (runner-up in 7th grade) His teams won State Championships in 1955 and 1959 and were Runner-ups in 1957 and 1958. Jim also won 2- individual event gold medals at State. (50 yd. freestyle in 28.1 and 100 yd.
breaststroke in 1:17.5). Janine Thoney- 1964Janine was one of the best female tennis players in school history. She earned 7 Letters, including 3 on the boys team. Janine won 5 consecutive Regional singles Championships. Her husband Roger Walz is a former Highlands High School athlete and coach. Her daughter Jamie is one of the greatest high school basketball players in state history. Janine’s son Jeff is the highly successful women’s basketball coach at the University of Louisville. Debbie Recker- 1967Debbie was an outstanding tennis player from 19631967. During this time she won 3 Regional Titles. (2 singles, 1 doubles) She participated in the State tennis tournament for 3 years. Outside of Bellevue Debbie was also a 2-time WesternSouthern City Champion and won the Northern Kentucky Jaycees singles tournament twice. She played Collegiately at UC and was a 3-year Letter winner. Jim Winters, Jr- 1967A football, basketball, and track star. Jim Captained all 3 teams. He was AllState in football, one of the top Centers in basketball and in track Jim won 2 State long jump titles, just like his father (21’09.50” and 22’00.25”) and holds 3, 52 year-old school records. (long jump, (22’ 11”) 100, (10.7 co- holder) and 800 relay (1:31.3). He also quarterbacked the Tigers last football victory over Highlands in 1965.

Mental Health Matters Men and Mental Health
by Whayne Herriford, MS, LPCC Maintaining sanity during the holidays The holidays can be the most stressful time of the year for many people. In my experience the major cause of anxiety or depression this time of the year are expectations – the ones we put on ourselves and the ones which other people put on us. Shopping & gift giving, making the rounds of parties & family gatherings and the overall hustle and bustle can easily turn anyone into a Scrooge! Here are some thoughts and tips for making the best of this time of year. • Set boundaries. What do YOU need and want during this time? Are there things that you know will trigger sadness or stress or anxiety that you can avoid or minimize? Give your needs a priority as you make plans or respond to requests from others. Share responsibilities for planning or carrying out activities when you can. • Set reasonable expectations. Try to be reasonable about what you can and can’t do! Pace yourself. Make a list of all the things you must do and prioritize them. Then start at the top of the list. Put some time on your list for you to do something that you enjoy and helps you relax. • The holiday season doesn’t magically make sadness or loneliness disappear. If you are missing
someone this year can you do something to ‘symbolically’ include them in your plans. Be careful not to isolate yourself from others and try not to medicate your feelings in ways that are not helpful to you overall. Spend time with people who are supportive and caring. • Be careful with excesses! It’s easy to get into a mode where we’re spending too much or eating too much or drinking too much. Set a budget for spending and stick to it. Use a designated driver or ride share if you plan on drinking. • Do something for someone else. Try volunteering some time to help others. It feels good to do something that helps someone else out. There are also lots of things that you can do that are inexpensive or free – so don’t think it’s going to cost a lot to spend time with others. • When someone isn’t very nice, try to assume best intent. Sales people, other shoppers and family members may express their feelings in ways that don’t feel good to you. When appropriate, try to remember that the frustration is about them and not you. If you can smile and say thank you to people and not engage with them they way, they approached you you’ll find that it’s a lot easier for you (and might help them calm down too!) Dreams Do Come True
by Colonel Will Young, Bellevue Way back during World War II, the most popular form of entertainment on Saturday night was the great Marianne Theatre. Yes, take your sweetie to the show. Hollywood was doing its best to fill our teenage minds with dreams of the future. My sweetie became my wife as soon as she graduated in 1952 and the Army found a place for me to serve—North Korea. As soon as the feature film as over on came the “MovieTone News”. Reel after reel of our fighting
men and women defining freedom around the world. The beginning of my dreams was our men going hundreds of feed down into the oceans to sink the enemy ships. And to see the planes battling each other up in the sky. One such pane new to our squadrons was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning Fighter, desperately needed to defend our bombers. She was designed not like any other. Could go to 24,000 feet to protect our boys. She had range over 400 miles per hour and heavy duty 50 caliber guns. The Germans quickly felt its deadly

Knight. My Saturday night date from 1952 was there capturing all the speed, spins, looms and my facial grin! One a separate dive trip to Grand Cayman, we saw a yellow submarine. We asked questions and the next day I went down to 800 feet and no pipes burst! It’s very, very black down there.

Andden Cain, Madden Johnson, Matthew Hacker, Rebecca Meace, and Maddlyn Kincaid discussed the projects they had been creating in Mrs. Qualls’ art class, and they shared their creations with the board. Additionally, we held a ribbon cutting at Bellevue High School just before the Board of Education meeting to mark the official opening of the new accessible entrance to the high school. The renovation was completed in collaboration with the Historic Preservation Society to ensure that we created an entrance that is accessible to all while still matching the historic façade of the building. Three ribbons were cut: one by the Board of Education members, another by Bellevue Assistant City Administratior Jody Robinson (representing the Historic Preservation Committee), and a third by Bellevue Middle School Student Parker Kern (12).

As one who struggles with losing weight and overall physical health, going public can make a big difference. What I mean is, if I tell someone I’m not going to drink Coke any more, I’m more likely to accomplish that because others now know I’m working on that. Use Your Word! all about getting to our why. Writing down our “why” is significant, it helps us to remember why we do what we do and keeps us on track. Someone asked me why I am a pastor. My why is, because I can’t imagine anyone going through life without knowing God’s love. This statement keeps me on track. I believe that God is still speaking. I also believe that God still inspires us to transfer our thoughts, experiences, and stories to share with others through the written word. Without the Scriptures (sacred writings) we may have never come to know about Jesus. Powerful! Congregations write mission, and purpose statements to help them stay on track and accomplish goals. These words inspire and transform congregations, neighborhoods, and communities. My friend Mark Lowry, contemporary Christian vocal artist and comedian, sings the song, “Mary Did You Know?” The song asks questions to Jesus’ mother Mary. Mary did you know that your baby boy: will one day walk on water; will save our sons and daughters; has come to make you new; will
give sight to the blind man; calm a storm with his hand; walked where angels trod; and when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God? The Bible says in the Gospel of John verse 1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Words matter. God’s words matter. And the words that you share in telling your story matter, not just for you, but everyone who receives your story. What brings you joy? What is your calling or passion? What will you do?
