University founder Thomas Green Clemson (pictured left) was born in 1807 in Philadelphia, PA and educated in the United States and Europe. A champion of formal scientific education, he had a lifelong interest in agricultural affairs and in the business of farming. He came to the South Carolina Foothills when, in 1838, he married Anna Maria Calhoun, daughter of famous statesman John C. Calhoun.
