2011 season review QuickNotes: 2 4 -6 F inal Record (9-2 ACC) NCAA S weet Six teen #11 F inal ITA Ranking T wo all -americans three all - acc players Around the Team in 30 Seconds • Nancy Harris is in her 14th season as Clemson’s head coach; She holds a 237-127 all-time record, and became the school’s all-time ACC wins leader with her 85th against Florida State • Clemson has advanced to 5 straight NCAA Sweet 16s and 7 in the last 8 seasons • The Tigers have made ten straight NCAA tournament appearances and 18 overall • Clemson advanced to the Final Eight of the ITA Team Indoor Championships for the first time in school history when they knocked off #7 UCLA in the Rd. of 16 • In the current team rankings, Clemson played 9 of the top 11 teams and 12 of the top 19 overall during the 2011 season. • Bek and Keri Wong achieved the nation’s No. 1 doubles ranking for four weeks, the first time in school history that a doubles team has earned the top spot. They are curerntly ranked 6th and were both named to the All-ACC team. • Four different Tigers have amassed 22+ singles wins this year, with two others within two of 20. • The Tigers advanced out of an opponent’s region for the second time in school history, and the first since 1996, when Clemson won three matches in Columbia, SC That’s Ten! • This is Clemson’s tenth straight NCAA Tournament Appearance and 18th all-time • The Tigers are 24-17 overall in NCAA Tournament play and 21-9 during the streak • This is the eighth straight time the Tigers have earned a national seed, as Clemson is the 15th overall seed in the tournament How Sweet It Is • The Tigers advanced out of the Arkansas regional, defeating Wichita State (4-0) and Arkansas (4-2) to get to Stanford • Sophomore Nelly Ciolkowski provided the winning point, defeating Kate Lukomskaya in three sets. • Clemson has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in each
of the last five seasons, and in seven of the last eight. • Overall, the Tigers have been among the final 16 teams standing 13 times Two Tigers Earn NCAA Singles, Doubles Selections • All-ACC performaers Keri Wong and Josipa Bek have eached earned invitations to play in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Competition, held May 26-31 in Palo Alto, CA • Bek earned a national 9-16 seed in the draw, and participate for the third time in her career • Wong received an at-large selection, and will make her first appearance in the singles portion • As a doubles team, Bek and Wong received a 5-8 national seed in the 32-team field • Bek is 3-2 in her previous appearances in the doubles portion, while Wong is 0-1, falling as a freshman in 2009 with Ani Mijacika.
• The tandem went 6-2 in league play in doubles and 15-5 overall at the top flight. • The two selections gave Clemson multiple All-ACC selections for the fourth straight season Nancy Harris Becomes Winningest ACC Coach in Clemson History • Nancy Harris won her 85th career ACC regular season match when the Tigers downed Florida State, 5-2, in Tallahassee earlier this season • Harris now has 90 wins in the ACC, passing Andy Johnston’s 84 from 1983-97
An Even 20 • With their win against Wichita State, Clemson reached the 20-win plateau for the 13th time in school history • It is the fifth 20-plus win season for head coach Nancy Harris, which moves her ahead of Mary King (1976-82) and Andy Johnston (1983-97) for the most 20-win seasons as a women’s tennis coach at Clemson
Bek, Wong Earn No. 1 National Ranking • Keri Wong and Josipa Bek ascended to the nation’s No. 1 doubles ranking and stayed there for four weeks from March 15- April 12. • The duo are 28-9 together and have knocked off three No. 1 ranked doubles teams, including current No. 1 Juricova and Andersson from Cal • They reached the Finals of both Fall Major Championships, the Riviera ITA All-American Championships and the ITA National Indoor Championships • They also won the ITA Carolina Region doubles championship • Bek (34) and Wong (33) are just shy of the singleseason school record for doubles wins, which stands at 35 and was set my Ina Hadziselimovic in 2010
We’ll pass on the Cupcakes • Clemson’s 21-10 record has come among the nation’s best teams • Clemson played eight of the top ten teams nationally • Eight ACC Teams finished the season ranked among the top 25 nationally • In addition to the ACC opponents, Clemson played No. 1 Florida, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 Georgia, and No. 10 Michigan and No. 19 Vanderbilt; • Clemson also played No. 35 South Carolina and No. 41 South Florida out of conference
Tigers Advance to Round of 8 at ITA Team National Indoor Championships • Clemson knocked off No. 7 UCLA with a huge comeback in the round of 16 at the Team National Indoor Championships to advance to the Final Eight for the first time in school history • Clemson defeated #61 Dartmouth and #19 Vanderbilt during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in order to advance to the round of 16 in Charlottesville, VA • Clemson then won at singles flights 1,2,4 and 5 to clinch the win as Josipa Bek defeated McCall Jones, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win
All-ACC Honorees • Juniors Josipa Bek and Keri Wong were each named to the 2011 All-ACC team • It was the third career honor for Bek, and the second for Wong • Bekwent 6-4 in the ACC singles portion of the schedule, suffering all four losses to top-45 opponents in three sets. • Wong was 8-3 in singles play, and closed the season on a seven match winning streak in league play, with four wins over ranked opponents
Bek again leading Clemson at the Top • Josipa Bek, ranked as high as No. 9 in the country, has led Clemson thoughout the season in dual match play • She also is 12-5 in three-set matches, two shy of the school mark for most three-set wins in a season, held by Ingelise Driehuis, who was 14-3 in 1987 • Her 29 career three-set wins rank tops in Clemson history as well. • She advanced to the finals of the ITA Carolina Regional Singles Championship in the fall as well
