The Life, Death and Rebirth of a River

T

he Cuyahoga River has had many different names and spellings: Yashahia, White River, Goyahague River. The Native Americans called it Cuyahoga meaning “crooked river” because of its many turns and bends. It’s considered a young river at 13,000 years old. Created by the last retreating glaciers, it flows through a much older Cuyahoga Valley. The U-shaped river’s source is in Burton. It flows southward through farming communities until it encounters the summit at Cuyahoga Falls. Unable to continue its southern journey the river turns sharply north, flowing through Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Cleveland Metroparks Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation until it reaches Cleveland where it empties into Lake Erie. The river has flowed 85 miles from its headwaters to its mouth, a mere 30 miles west of where it originally started. This quiet, meandering river has been used, abused, shaped and reshaped by human inhabitants for more than 2,000 years. The Native Americans used the river

for food and transportation. Evidence of their villages have been found on the ridge tops overlooking the valley not more than six miles south of Cleveland. European settlers moved into the area first as hunters and trappers, then as farmers. They cut down the forest and planted crops in the rich soil deposited by the river when it floods in the spring. For a short time, the river became the western boundary of the United States. East of the river was U.S. property; west of the river was Native American territory. When Ohio & Erie Canal was built it opened up Northeast Ohio to new industrial and commercial development. Dams were constructed creating holding areas for water used for the canal system. Towns and cities were built along its shores. Warehouses, mills, ship building and steel mills used the water for their manufacturing and waste disposal. The mouth of the river was moved 4,000 feet east of its original site and is periodically dredged to allow large ships to navigate up the river.

The river changed dramatically from its clean, serene beauty of centuries ago to one of the worst polluted rivers in Ohio’s history. Animal populations declined. The replacement of vegetation with paved roads and buildings created an environment for severe flooding. The Cuyahoga River has made a remarkable comeback. Parks now border much of its shore. Forests have regenerated, creating habitat for returning populations of beaver, mink, and coyotes. Water quality has improved where the Cuyahoga River can now support abundant aquatic life. View the Cuyahoga River as it flows through Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. The industry, roads and towns are still here, but so are the trees, wetlands, deer, birds and beaver. All living together due to the rebirth of the Cuyahoga River. Jo Ann Bastian-Kubicki Information Specialist CanalWay Center

NOTES FROM THE FIELD

How I Learned to Love August and Roll Stream Rocks There was a time when I considered August the worst month of the year, based entirely on the fundamental laws of physics and a guy named Carl. A nineteenth century biologist, Carl Bergmann proposed that there existed a general rule that within an ecological family, larger varieties tended to live farther north, while smaller varieties preferred warmer, even hot climates. Based on the simple mathematical model of ratios of surface area to body volume, Bergmann’s Rule suggested that smaller people tended to love summer and hate winter, and larger galoots like myself tended to enjoy cooler, even cold months and eschew hot weather. The smaller ones have more surface area and are more efficient at shedding body heat, the larger ones less surface area compared to their body volume, which conserves heat. Look around your circle of family and friends, and see to whom this applies. I think you’ll find that it fits rather nicely. Another puzzle solved. It’s hot in August. And humid. And sticky. And just gawdly awful for those of taller or wider dimensions. I’ve never looked forward to August, ever. Until I found South Chagrin Reservation. Of all the many places that I enjoy hiking, I enjoy South Chagrin’s Jackson Field the most. Cool shady parking and simple trails lead across an open meadow where Eastern bluebirds are common, then back into cool shade again as the path turns left along the peaceful Chagrin River. In August, the Chagrin changes from a smooth-flowing river to a tranquil stream to a babbling brook, depending on recent rainfall events. I think I like the babbling brook-Chagrin the best, both for its song and for the ability to then wade 4 Emerald Necklace, August 2014

out in shallow expanses of rock-lined runs, roll over a few rocks, and look for the creatures that call the Chagrin home. Mostly insect larvae, these harmless puzzlers are perfect teachers of diversity and adaptation, with legs and gills and shape and habits to survive in what might be thought of as an ever-changing and

sometimes hostile environment. I most enjoy finding members of the Mayfly family, easy to spot as they’re usually sporting three “tails.” While some Mayfly larvae are free ranging, many spend their lives clinging to underwater rocks with sporty streamlined bodies and talon-like hooks on each leg to ensure their safety when fast water arrives. Some species spend as much as a year underwater as larvae before they emerge, first in sub imago stage taking them from water to land, and then emerging from the sub imago “suit” to become winged adults. Groups of males may emerge in large numbers and perform a mating flight, sometimes called “the mayfly dance” over water in late afternoon and early evening. Easy to see in the long afternoon sunlight and shadows, they fly up a few feet then float downward, until females find the cloud of males and join the flight. Their aerial dance is short and sweet. Mayflies have only minutes to hours to live. Once

fertilized on the wing, the female deposits her eggs in the water and dies. The male mayfly lasts no longer than she. Eggs hatch and the Grand Plan begins once more. Tiny miniature mayflies go through several molts as they grow larger and their larval, sometimes called nymphal, stage progresses. Many nymphs, most perhaps, fall prey to fish, crayfish and predatory insects as the days and months pass, until finally the survivors once emerge from the Chagrin as countless generations before them have emerged, and the life cycle repeats again. South Chagrin’s Jackson Field is by no means unique in its aquatic life. There are mayflies and indeed many dozens of other aquatic nymphs to discover and enjoy in nearly every clean, fresh stream in our region. All it takes is the willingness to explore. If you become a stream rock roller too, remember to be gentle with the tiny creatures you seek. Flick them off the rock with a toothpick into a clear kitchen container if you want to better see the adaptations that different species displays, but then make a point to gently return them to the stream. To care for life is to care for the little ones too. And if you go rock rolling, consider bringing a child with you? Remember they are the next generation of protectors and conservationists, and they can hardly be expected to care for the environment if they’ve never experienced it for themselves.

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

August August begins the turning point of summer. Daylight is noticeably shorter as the month pushes forward leading to an average decrease in temperature. Flocks of blackbirds start to congregate in large numbers, bats begin to disperse from maternity colonies and the first southerly migration of shorebirds begins. Bird offspring now foraging on their own are still dependent on adults to teach them migration routes. August is a good time to be out at night as the Perseid meteor shower peaks early in the month and is a great opportunity to witness shooting stars while listening to insects. Birds Late summer marks the end of breeding season for most birds, except for cedar waxwings and American goldfinches, which are hard at work preparing nests and raising young in the heat. The dawn chorus of songbirds such as warblers, flycatchers, tanagers and grosbeaks has quieted, except for red-eyed vireos singing high in the canopy of lush forests. While it seems early, fall migration is already underway, as blackbird flocks gather in fields and shorebirds return to wetlands and marshes as they move south from the Arctic tundra. Insects Fields and wetlands are alive with the buzzing and fluttering of colorful insects. August is a peak time for dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly diversity. Skimmers, darners, bluets, spreadwings, baskettails, saddlebags and other unique odonates are busy foraging on the wing and laying eggs in ponds and lakes. Common buckeyes, one of the most brilliant of butterflies, can be found on sunny paths through

meadows. Cicadas, grasshoppers, crickets and katydids fill the afternoons, evenings, and starlit nights with loud serenades. Wildflowers Rich soil nutrients found in floodplain forests allow some of the tallest wildflowers in Cleveland Metroparks to thrive. Yellows of wingstem, greenheaded coneflower and cup plant can grow over 10 feet tall which are highlighted with the lavenders of the shorter wild bergamot and wood sage. These insect pollinated plants are great places to search for predators, such as assassin bugs and crab spiders waiting patiently for their next meal. Amphibians Salamander larvae found in rapidly drying vernal pools begin their transition from life in the water to life on land. They leave the pools to forage in forest leaf litter and soil; one day to return to this same pool to mate and provided life to another generation of salamanders.

ZOO NEWS

Have an ‘Enriching’ Experience at the Zoo’s Annual Creature Comforts Event Saturday, August 9 • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Taking care of the thousands of animals at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a big job! From tiny newborn tadpoles to giant, 100-year-old Aldabra tortoises, the Zoo’s animal keepers are constantly working on new ways to keep the animals healthy, both mentally and physically. One of the main ways the keepers engage the animals and stimulate naturalistic behaviors is through “enrichment” of their environment. Guests can see some of the more unique enrichment techniques used by the Zoo during the annual Creature Comforts event. Past enrichment demonstrations included papier-mache prey for predators to pounce on, treat-stuffed barrels on bungee cords for the grizzly bears and puzzle feeders for primates. Visit clevelandmetroparks.com/zoo for a detailed activity schedule. Animal keepers will be on-hand to explain enrichment activities and the natural behaviors they promote. Learn more about enrichment during the Zoo’s live animal shows in the Savanna Theater and Ballarat Theatre. These shows highlight training techniques that help Zoo staff provide the best animal care.
