September 23 − September 29 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held at the end of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Growing up Social: Raising Relational Kids in A Screen-Driven World By Gary Chapman 004.67 CHA In this digital age, children are spending more and more time interacting with a screen rather than a parent. Technology has the potential to add value to our families, but it can also erode a sense of togetherness and hinder a child's emotional growth. Read and learn how to take back your home from an overdependence on screens. Discover the five A+ skills needed to give your child the relational edge in life: affection, appreciation, anger management, apology, and attention. Now is the time to equip your child to live with screen time, not for screen time. No phone, tablet, or gaming device can teach your child how to have healthy relationships; only you can.

Facebook Workshops Are you interested in learning how to use Facebook to connect with family and friends? Social Media is a powerful communication tool these days. Cleburne Public Library will be offering Facebook workshops during the month of September on Tuesdays at 2pm. The classes will be held at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center Computer Lab, located at 100 Mansfield Road. The workshop is designed to help you learn to use Facebook in an internet browser on your desktop or laptop computer. In this class you will learn basic Facebook navigation, how to create, comment on and share posts, how to upload and manage photos, and how to manage friends lists. You will also learn to use account settings to find a level of privacy and security that is right for you. Each class will accommodate up to 8 students, and computers are provided. The classes are free of charge, but seating is limited and based on a “first come, first serve” basis and registration is requested. A valid email address is required to set up a Facebook account. Let the Cleburne Public Library help ease your anxieties and gain the skills and confidence to become computer savvy. What is your job at the library? I am the Associate Librarian (aka the Children’s & Teen Librarian).

MEET THE STAFF Susan Reyna

What is your favorite thing about the Cleburne library? I love so much about our library, but my favorite part of my week is Wednesday morning Story Times! I love sharing great books, songs, poems, and activities with the young children and their families!

What do you think the library contributes most to the community? I love that the library provides equity in our community! All people have equal access to all we provide: technology, programs, books, movies, periodicals, etc. All people have equal opportunity to read, learn, and enjoy all we have to offer! What are some books you would recommend? There are so many great books! For adults and teens, Fahrenheit 451, The Hunger Games series, or the Unwind series are absolute “must reads.” Kids reading bigger chapter books should read Mr. Lemoncello’s Library series, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, and The One and Only Ivan. Picture book readers should read everything by Mercer Mayer, Bill Martin, Jr., and Eric Carle! What are some of your hobbies? I love to swim, kayak, camp, paint rocks, and of course, I love to read! What is something random about yourself that most people do not know? I love dystopian fiction! If you could have one super power, what would it be and why? I would love to be able to fly! The freedom and joy of moving like a bird would be amazing!
