WELCOME Welcome from the Chairman Emeritus

Welcome to Anime Weekend Atlanta 2012! Hello and welcome to the... let me see, sixteen, seventeen, EIGHTEENTH annual ANIME WEEKEND ATLANTA! Was it really that long ago that a small group of fans got together and decided that what Atlanta needed was a weekend-long celebration of Japanese cartoons? Well, calendars don’t lie. AWA may have begun as a mere few hundred people gathering in a decrepit and now demolished hotel to share their mutual love and admiration for the artform of Japanese animation, but while our attendance has multiplied and our facilities have been significantly upgraded, at the heart of our festival remains that certain inexpressible spark that catches us somewhere back of the eyeballs and makes us say “Wow, those Japanese cartoon things are kinda cool.” At this point, 18 years on, it’s hard to tell if our interest in Japanese animation keeps us AWA veterans cheerful and young at heart, or instead has us mesmerized in a colorful, well-animated spiral of arrested development. One thing’s for sure, either way it will involve high school girls and giant super robots designed and animated in Japan, the land of pop-culture entertainment that has been enchanting children and adults around the world for decades. You might have grown up watching SPEED RACER or PRINCE PLANET on UHF television, you may have bought ROBOTECH model kits, VOLTRON toys or SAILOR MOON dolls, you may still have POKEMON cards kicking around the back seat of your car or RURONI KENSHIN DVD box sets on your bookshelves. You may be live-streaming current episodes of NARUTO, CARDFIGHT VANGUARD, SPACE BROTHERS, or POLAR BEAR CAFE on your laptop. Or you may have experienced all of the above. Since 1963, American audiences have been a part of Japanese animation; what’s happening here this weekend - all the costumes we’re wearing, all the manga and DVDs and plushies we’re buying in the dealers room, all the debates we’re having over which Gundam could beat which other Gundam - it’s all part of this continuing story, and we here at AWA are proud to be a small part of it. This year’s AWA comes in the midst of tragedy; the recent sudden loss of Patrick Bohnet; staff director, devoted husband and father, and friend. His tireless and inventive work as VAT director will be acutely missed here at the convention, and we hope you will join us in expressing our deepest condolences to his loved ones.

GUIDELINES

IMPORTANT RULES

We love the facility we’re in and we want to keep them happy. We love having you at AWA and we want to keep you happy. Part of keeping everybody happy is using a little common sense and remembering that you’re part of ten thousand people all crammed into space. Misbehavior gets amplified in these situations. So here are some hints to help you throughout while you’re at AWA. • Eat, sleep and bathe on a regular basis. Remember to take your prescription medication. • Be courteous to those in wheelchairs and allow room for them on elevators. Remember that you have the option of using the stairs and escalators. • If you feel like running around and hollering, go outside and do all of this. • Turn off your cell phone during videos, panels and important events. • If you have lots of baggage, the Waverly concierge desk will check it for you until you have to leave. • Call your parent or guardian and let them know you’re okay at least once a day. • If you’re a parent, keep an eye on your children. Don’t allow them to roam the facility unsupervised. Remember that not everyone in the world is nice.

• Your AWA badge must be visible on your person at all times when attending or participating in any AWA function, anywhere. • Be aware of yourself and your surroundings at all times; especially late at night. Stay with your friends, make sure people know where you are and where you’re supposed to be. Don’t go off into the dark with a total stranger. • Signs worn on the body are prohibited. No exceptions. • Do not steal or damage any property from anyone, place or thing at any of our locations. Shoplifters and Vandals will be arrested and dealt with by Cobb County Police and ejected from AWA. • Panhandling, begging, and soliciting of any sort is prohibited. You have had and will have 12 months to save up for every AWA. • Sales of merchandise or any other item outside of authorized AWA venues is absolutely prohibited. If you want to sell things please go through the proper means. • Fighting, mock combat, horseplay, assault, fist fights, martial arts sparring, and any of this similar behavior will not be tolerated. Please go outside to do this activities. • Disruptive behavior such as hollering, noisemakers, obstructions of hallways or foot traffic, is against the rules and may result in the ejection from AWA. Again, please go outside. • Do not drop anything of any mass whatsoever from the balconies of the Waverly or the Galleria. You will be ejected on sight from AWA and the properties by the Cobb County Police. • Please don’t move the chairs and tables. We put them there for a reason. • Follow the Weapons Policy in the program guide. Please comply with all Cobb County Police requests in this matter. • If you are under 21, consumption of alcohol is prohibited by law. If you are over 21, alcohol is to be consumed in appropriate areas only. • Do not sleep in the convention function rooms or common areas provided by the convention. • Trash goes in the proper trash receptacles only. • Do not post flyers, posters, promotional material or anything of the like on the walls of the con areas. There are bulletin boards and free flyer tables available.

DISABILITY SERVICES Anime Weekend Atlanta supports equal access and provides onsite assistance for anyone with a disability. Please be sure to stop by the Disability Services table, located next to Registration if you will require any assistance during the course of the convention. Hours of operation for our table are 5pm to 10pm Thursday, 10am to 10pm Friday, 10am to 7pm Saturday and Noon to 4pm Sunday. If you need assistance before or after these times, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help! Anime Weekend Atlanta seeks to do its utmost in providing equal and fair access to its participants with disabilities in accordance with State and Federal Law. Due to the conventions limited resources, the Disability Services staff may be required to speak with you about reasonable accommodations in order to best suit your needs. Seating is limited and available at a first come, first serve basis. Please also adhere to the published seating times for events if you are able. We ask that you be cooperative with us during the convention, and to ask for assistance if needed.

SECURITY The primary objective of AWA’s Security Department is to make sure everyone has a safe, fun time. We want our patrons to be as comfortable and entertained as they would be as guests in our homes. Security personnel will be present at all times

INFORMATION Guidelines & Rules

throughout the weekend. However, if the need arises, Security can be located in the Boardroom of the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. If you require assistance at any time, please don’t hesitate to flag down a member of our staff to help you.

Ceremonies on Sunday. For life-threatening events, please call 911 and then notify any AWA staff so that we can help guide emergency personnel to you faster. When Medical is closed, there are several 24-hour pharmacies within a few miles from the convention.

Please limit use of elevators to their proper intended function. Security strongly encourages patrons who are only traversing one floor (especially 1st Floor to 2nd Floor & vice versa) to please use the stairs and/or escalators, as this helps to maintain a healthy flow for those trying to get to events and or panels. All patrons will be required to exit “down” elevators at the lobby and will need to wait there for an upward-bound car. Elevators will be monitored at all times. If you are found to be joyriding on the elevators, you will be asked to disembark. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of our patrons, Anime Weekend Atlanta reserves the right to revoke badge privileges at any time. Badges may be pulled by Security or other convention staff for multiple offenses, or for serious single infractions on the premises.

IN MEMORIUM In Memorium

IN MEMORIUM - PATRICK “QUU” BOHNET The AWA family has lost one of our own. In July Patrick “Quu” Bohnet passed away of a heart attack caused by the lingering effects of a childhood disorder. Patrick was a good friend to the convention and its staff at all levels for over a decade, and as an Assistant Director he was the heart and soul of our VAT technical department for many years. Most attendees knew him as the mysterious figure springing into action when the video feed in the VAT went weird (like the time he bolted a box fan to a PC to keep it from bursting into flames), but our AMV contest participants knew him as the tireless voice on the phone, delicately sorting out whatever glitch was de-synching their videos. “To Pat, AMVs were a form of art and he was like a curator. He wanted to preserve them and present them to the audience the way the creators had intended. It’s because of his attention to detail that his hardware/ software playback system has been the benchmark for AMV contest coordinators for nearly a decade.” (-Omar Jenkins, Iron Editor organizer-) Those lucky enough to know him personally knew him as the quintessential ‘gentle (as well as ‘genteel’) giant’, offering help and opening home and hospitality to the AWA and AMV community whenever needed. During my tenure as VAT department head he technically reported to me, but I don’t know anyone who was fooled into thinking that meant I was in charge of him. His technical expertise, programming skill, and stubborn refusal to give up on any problem that confronted him (whether carbon or silicon in origin) did more to dictate what was possible and worth screening in the VAT than anything I brought to the table. He was a key organizer of the first DDR project, the famed Iron Editor, and, more frequently than not, a participant or technical consultant in the deluge of Multi-Editor projects and ambitious, experimental long-form works that followed. As a result, he became a social nexus within the AMV community; well known throughout the .org (animemusicvideos.org) and among contest organizers, forever granting advice, technical and creative, to newcomers and old hands alike, and is a major reason AWA is known for its AMV track. In recent years, Patrick had been forced to step back from his duties at AWA and in the AMV community, but only for the very best of reasons. His marriage to Debra Parnell and the subsequent birth of their daughter Sylvia meant a shift in priorities: he had to be looking after much more important people. In spite of this, he always made a point of attending AWA and repeatedly checking in with the VAT. In recent months he’d even been talking about returning in an official capacity. His death at only 36 has been an enormous shock and not one from which AWA or the VAT will readily recover. In the end, his legacy at AWA is assured; the memories and friendships among staff and attendees, and his technical and creative impact on the VAT will not be forgotten. To quote another AMVer, EK Weaver, “AMVers never die. They just convert to a different format.”

Tim Eldred

David Williams

Ed Chavez

Director

Artist

Tim first saw anime back in the cave man days when Star Blazers came on air in 1979, and that spelled his doom. For the rest of his life, he followed an obsession that lead him into the professional comic book world, and then the animation industry, all on a quest to capture that magic that he remembered.

David Williams has been in the anime industry for over 19 years, doing everything from subtitling to DVD production to marketing to ADR directing. He is currently working with Sentai Filmworks where he has helped to bring out titles such as, High School of the Dead,Angel Beats, Clannad and many others.

His roots run far deeper than just the translator of America’s top selling cat manga. Chavez has been a manga and doujin enthusiast since the early 90’s and his writings on the subject predate North America’s manga explosion of popularity.

So far, he’s turned that quest into a website (starblazers.com), an original SF/comedy graphic novel titled “Grease Monkey” (greasemonkeybook.com), and a longrunning career drawing storyboards for TV cartoons (such as Batma: the Brave and the Bold, Ultimate SpiderMan and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes). And you better believe he’s not even close to being done yet.

As an ADR director with ADV Films, he directed shows such as D.N.Angel, Angelic Layer,Pretear, Najica Blitz Tactics and many others too numerous to list. He has authored hundreds of DVDs and BDs, subtitled more shows than he can count and been instrumental in bringing hundreds of shows to the US.

Animator

16

He would then simultaneously write for Otaku USA Magazine, while editing and translating for publishers Seven Seas, DC/CMX and Kodansha Ltd. Japan’s Morning 2 magazine. His work would then take him to Japan, where he put on a marketing cap for Morning 2 and Kodansha’s new light novel line Kodansha BOX. His unique experience overseas, working within the Japanese manga industry while volunteering in Japan’s robust doujinshi community, would eventually land him a job at Vertical, Inc where Chavez translates, licenses and markets their eclectic award-winning manga line. When not working on translated works, Chavez still takes time to edit doujinshi from both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

Williams Ballroom (Galleria 2nd Floor) FRIDAY Moonlit Forest Gala 8:00pm - 12:00am

Join the radiant Empress Awa as she opens the gates to her beloved royal wood, the Moonlit Forest. You’re invited to a magical evening filled with song, merriment and fantasy – all under the beautiful starlit night sky. Doors open 8pm, Dining and Dancing until Midnight. Tickets are $30 at the door. Dress Code: Black Tie Invited (formal wear preferred, suits/ dresses allowed), formal Cosplay allowed. The Ball features our exclusive live string quartet playing Ballroom dances and Anime themes. Buffet/light snacks included in ticket price. A non-alcoholic cash bar will also be available. Ballroom dance class Friday afternoon outside the Williams Ballroom (currently scheduled for 5pm, subject to change). This event’s dress code is “Black Tie Invited.” From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_tie) Black tie is a dress code for semi-formal evening events, and is worn to many types of social functions. For a man, the major component is a jacket, known as a dinner jacket (British) or tuxedo (Canada and the U.S.), which is usually black but is also seen in midnight blue. A woman’s corresponding evening dress ranges from a conservative cocktail dress to the long evening gown, determined by current fashion, local custom, and the occasion’s time.

the ladies. A few guidelines/general pointers about the dress code: • T-Shirts, Jeans, and tennis shoes are not appropriate for the Ball. Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars are not, have not ever been, and will never be considered formal, sorry for the inconvenience (Yes, we know it’s been done before. That still does not make it formal). Proper footwear for the male is either black patent leather shoes, monogrammed velvet opera slippers, or proper dress shoes. • Men (or Women crossplaying as Men) should be wearing a tuxedo or a suit. A jacket and tie will be acceptable. Shirts must be tucked in. • Women (or Men crossplaying as Women) should be wearing a ballgown. Cocktail dresses are accepted. Skirts/Dresses should be knee length or longer. • Wings and other large accessories are not permitted. • Trench Coats and other outer wear are not considered formal and should not be worn. • Masks will not be allowed. • Weapons of any kind are not allowed. The dress code will be strictly enforced. If you are purchasing tickets for others, please make certain all members of you party are aware of the dress code. Refunds will be given if attire is unacceptable.

Given that this is a formal event at a convention, some leeway will be given to con attendees in costume, however the costume must be of a formal nature. A useful guideline is, “What would this character wear to a formal event?” Military dress uniforms and formal kimono are appropriate. Informal cosplay will not be permitted. In all cases, cosplay is optional and definitely not required. All judgments on the appropriateness of attire will only be made at the event by a director or assistant director, and are final. Con attendees are encouraged to be conservative in their choice of cosplay to avoid the risk of being denied entry. We request at least a coat and tie for the men (waistcoats without coats at our discretion), and knee-length or longer dresses for

VIDEO ART Video Art Track Information

THE VIDEO ART TRACK (VAT) Come to the one place that never sleeps. The VAT will once again be cracking up the watts and bringing you the best from the world of AMVs and Video Art Content

ABOUT

Since the dawn of time (a.k.a 1995 – year one for Anime Weekend Atlanta) AWA has been dedicated to showcasing fan made Anime Music Videos. Eager for content in this growing subculture of fandom, we encouraged fans to submit up to two hours (!) of their creations for us to review. By 1999, the stack of video tapes (remember those) — filled several boxes. In 2000, AWA’s Music Video Contest Director Daric “Jingoro” Jackson created the innovative Video Art Track. Nicknamed the VAT, this entertainment track was supplied to Anime Weekend Atlanta as the first, three day twenty-fourhour convention programming concept dedicated not only to Anime Music Videos, but ALL video creations made by (and for) fans . These creations include movie preview parodies, original re-dubbings, and other creative A/V concoctions. Since then, the VAT has premiered more music videos, showcased more unique video projects (such as the Dance Dance Revolution Project and AMV Hell) and run more fan-driven video art contests than any other venue in the world!

MUSIC VIDEO CONTESTS

The VAT hosts three separate music video contests this year. Music Video Exposition

The longest running. Started at 1995’s first Anime Weekend Atlanta and has the greatest variety by having the fewest rules. Judged by AWA and the VAT staff, prizes are awarded across a number of categories – many of which are made up just for deserving entries!

Professional Awards

When creating The VAT in 2000, Jingoro wanted to add a contest especially for the creators. The competition was based on The Academy Awards: A venue where creators were judged not by convention staff or attendees, but by their peers. The categories are selected and prizes awarded by the very participants of the contest.

Commercial Parody Contest

Lastly, new to this year will be this, because the commercials we played from the archive last year in between programming was so popular, we’ve decided to add a new contest this year called the Commercial Parody Contest. We will play accepted entries with the top ones played in between our other two contests during the awards ceremony.

VIDEO ART TRACK TEAM (a.k.a “Those to Blame”)

The VAT is built on the efforts of a number of individuals throughout the year. Vlad G Pohnert managed this year’s Video Art Track programming. This year’s VAT Staffing is T. J Hamilton. This is Jingoro’s sixth year as Video Art Track Director for AWA and his eleventh year running the convention’s AMV Contests. As with any project of this magnitude, our current (and future success) is always rooted in the past. As such, the VAT would like to give a couple shout-outs to past VAT Director Dr. Matthew Christian Wagner and VAT Technical Carl Gray.

IN MEMORIAM - NOBURO ISHIGURO For many classic anime fans, the phrase ‘Space Opera’ became a favorite genre where heroes would face impossible odds in galactic adventures. One of the biggest pioneers of this genre was Noburo Ishiguro, whose series Space Battleship Yamato became a popular franchise, which was later imported to the U.S. as Star Blazers in the early 80s. He also directed Super Dimension Fortress Macross in 1982 which was subsequently also brought to America and re-written as the first segment of Robotech. His other equally noteworthy anime works include the ground-breaking Megazone 23 (which popularized the Original animation Video format in Japan), Super Dimension Century Orguss, Locke The Superman, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Anime Weekend Atlanta had the honor of hosting Mr. Ishiguro in 2007 so that attendees could learn of his extensive experiences. We were saddened to learn of his passing on March 20 due to post-surgical complications and will continue to honor the legacy he has left for fans in the years to come.

ARTWORK Artwork Contest

ANIME WEEKEND ATLANTA ART CONTEST Here at AWA, we love artists! Each year, we like to showcase artists wherever we represent AWA. We’d love to use your artwork for things like the Program Guide, Advertising Postcards, on the website and on merchandise sold at the official AWA store in the dealer’s room. So, as with last year, we’re holding an Art Contest! Our contest is open to all artists, amateur and professional. Two winners will receive a free admission to AWA, a free table in the artist alley, and a panel in the art show. Those winners will be the artists of the pieces we choose for the t-shirt design and the con guide cover. If the winning artist has already purchased a table in the Artist Alley and/or a display unit in the Art Show, their fee will be refunded during the convention. •

If you would like your artwork considered for the T-shirt, the piece must only have one to four colors and must look great against a black background. It must feature our mascot, the red-headed girl, her panda friend(s) (and company, if you like!) and peaches. If you would like your entry to be considered for the con guide cover, it must be a full page piece in full color that includes a background, and must contain the same 3 elements mentioned for the t-shirt above; the red-headed girl, her panda friend, and peaches.

We must receive your entry by midnight on April 30th, 2013

ARTWORK CONTEST RULES •

Your Artwork should incorporate the theme for 2013. This year, it is Japanese academic traditions. So whether your piece takes place in a school yard or the red-headed girl is wearing a school uniform, your work should include elements from a day at school in Japan Your artwork must be family-friendly. Your piece cannot be fan art. For example, the red-headed girl cannot be dressed like an existing character or have a pose that mimics copyrighted artwork and you should not incorporate symbols or other indications of an existing anime or manga. There is no limit to the number of submissions one artist can make, but we can only take artwork by an individual artist, so no collaborations please. All entries must be 600dpi CMYK resolution to produce a good quality print. You may send a smaller or lower resolution version of your artwork to the contest for judging if you so desire, as long as you have a higher resolution version available upon request. Please note that all submissions become the property of AWA and may be altered for our uses. Your submission(s) must include the following information: Your first and last name, the title of your piece (if there is one), and either a phone number or an email address for us to contact you. If you would like your art work to be placed in the con guide, you must provide your artwork in a “layered or raw” file on a transparent background. For complete rules, submission information, and up to date information please visit our website: http://www.awa-con.com/ index.php?page=awa-design-contest or scan the QR code!

There are two ways to get us your artwork. 1. Email.
