Horizons de Recherche / Research Horizons by Erasmus Mundus CLE

The keywords gathered here form a valuable testament: they reflect the memorable moments of the scientific and cultural encounters of a group of PhD students from several European universities, all of whom have completed the Erasmus Mundus Master Program in “European Literary Cultures”. This program of excellence was created in 2008 by the Universities of Bologna, Upper Alsace, Strasbourg and Thessaloniki. In a first scientific exchange in July 2013, several doctoral students proposed what they consider their “Research Horizons”. This volume is dedicated to several domains in several languages, from the Middle Ages to the present day, involving literature, linguistics and cinema. We invite the reader to discover here within the research of tomorrow at the crossroads of new methodologies, critical discussion and transnational dialogue.

Les Mots-CLE ici réunis constituent un témoignage de grande valeur : ils reflètent des moments privilégiés de rencontres scientifiques et culturelles issues d’un groupe de doctorants de plusieurs universités européennes qui ont tous fréquenté le Master Erasmus Mundus en « Cultures Littéraires Européennes ». Ce cursus d’excellence a été créé en 2008 par les Universités de Bologne, de Haute Alsace, de Strasbourg et de Thessalonique, et lors d’un premier échange scientifique, en juillet 2013, plusieurs doctorants ont proposé ce qu’ils considèrent comme leurs « Horizons de recherche ». Vouées à plusieurs domaines dans plusieurs langues, du Moyen-Âge à nos jours, impliquant littérature, sciences du langage et cinéma, nous proposons au lecteur de découvrir ici ces pistes de la recherche de demain, à la croisée des méthodologies nouvelles, des échanges multiples et du dialogue transnational.

Dans le souvenir du passé les mots-CLE du futur

Les «mots-CLE» que nous présentons aujourd’hui pour la première fois sont le témoignage de rencontres scientifiques, culturelles, personnelles d’un groupe de doctorants inscrits dans de nombreuses universités européennes. Ils nous offrent leurs «Horizons de recherche», leurs premiers pas dans la recherche. Ce qui les caractérisent est qu’ils se connaissent depuis longtemps; ils ont fréquenté ensemble le Master en Cultures Littéraires Européennes, créé en 2008 par les Universités de Bologne, de Haute Alsace, de Strasbourg et de Thessaloniki: un Master Erasmus Mundus. Au-delà du cadre d’excellence que ce label implique (étant une formation qui peut afficher cette appellation après une sélection très sévère de la part de la Commission européenne), ce master se axe, de part sa structure même, autour de la compréhension de l’Autre. En effet, il accueille des étudiants venus du monde entier, qui, pendant deux ans s’appliquent à étudier, à discuter, à comprendre les «Cultures Littéraires Européennes» tout en étudiant plusieurs langues; toutefois, ils doivent également apprendre à vivre ensemble, à se confronter, à percevoir les différences, et à les respecter. Nous avons pris à emblème un jeu de mots; avec des mots multiples, c’est le CLE qui prend forme: l’expérience commune, le travail ensemble, les joies, les plaisirs et les difficultés vécus. Car ce Master - qui a permis beaucoup de rencontres et a beaucoup appris aux professeurs et aux étudiants - veut faire connaître sa voix dans la conviction que les arts, les lettres peuvent et doivent permettre aux peuples de se parler, de dépasser les incompréhensions; si les créateurs ont la tâche de donner la voix à l’inconnu qui est en nous, le

critique littéraire a le devoir de le comprendre et de l’expliquer, de la faire ressurgir. Cet inconnu qui intrigue, les jeunes chercheurs qui se sont retrouvés autour de cette initiative, l’ont accepté avec courage, pendant les deux années de Master, en se confrontant à des moments difficiles, à des temps limités, à des situations qui les mettaient constamment en défi avec eux-mêmes. Ils ont compris que l’autre a en soi, quoique dans la difficulté de l’approche, la beauté de la nouveauté; que c’est là que réside la vie, la création, l’impasse pour un futur plein et resplendissant. C’est là que réside également une des clés importantes pour la recherche. Ainsi dans ce cadre prolongeant le passé, les Alumni CLE, qui ont mis en route leur recherche, ont voulu la partager avec les autres, en gardant vive l’amitié, la discussion littéraire et culturelle. Ils savent qu’en même temps ils vont sauvegarder le dialogue étroit qu’ils avaient créé entre eux, et qui doit continuer aujourd’hui entre des personnes qui vivent désormais loin l’une de l’autre, dans des pays différents, travaillant en des langues différentes, affichant des us et coutumes différents. Leur travail ne pourra que suivre les traces d’une plus grande capacité à la lecture entre les lignes de ce qu’une culture affiche, de ce qu’une époque a représenté, de ce qu’une langue dévoile. Si tout aujourd’hui semble s’appuyer sur des mots-clés: pour faire une recherche, pour la classer et la définir, il y a des mots-clés qui peuvent être générés également pour apporter aux autres des lignes de parcours qui paraissent fondamentales. Derrière ces recherches donc la volonté d’entrer dans l’Académie scientifique, mais aussi de dire que l’amitié, le travail collectif, le partage des langues, des cultures, des histoires collectives, enrichissent l’individu et la société. Du Moyen Age, à nos jours; de la linguistique au cinéma, tous les travaux ici repris ont été présentés lors de la première rencontre, qui a eu lieu à Bologne en juillet 2013. Des recherches qui remettent en question des sujets parfois très anciens et connus, parfois très récents et même très commentés, pour lesquels les jeunes chercheurs trouvent de nouvelles pistes de lecture. voyages sur la lune au XVIIe siècle pour en étudier les modifications par rapport à la structure d’avant. La Belle au bois dormant est vue, par Mihaila Petričić, à travers le filtre de deux films récents pour en offrir un regard nouveau et des perspectives nouvelles. Gabriel Ferreira Zacarias s’attache également à un cinéaste, Guy Debord, pour mettre en parallèle son concept du « détournement » avec le concept de mythologie de Barthes, l’un étant ce dont rêvait l’autre. Intéressante nouveauté aussi l’approche de Simão Valente aux récits policiers de Fernando Pessoa, en affichant une attention qui leur a manquée jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Fulvia Balestrieri regarde aux écrivains et à leur réaction à la bombe atomique, aux questionnements fondamentaux qu’elle a produit, au rôle social de l’écrivain. Gabriella Quadrato présente la recherche d’un roman où l’aventure serait la forme et non le contenu, alors que le regard de Jovana Karanikikj se pose sur la littérature migrante dans une perspective etnométhodologique. D’autres jeunes chercheurs focalisent des œuvres mettant également en lumière des auteurs parfois méconnus par la critique (Antoine Valodine par Gisela Bergonzoni ou Maurice de Waleffe par Mahan Saatchi), parfois à relire ou à lire différemment (Pinget par Andrea Guiducci, Elsa Morante par Caterina Sansoni, Pier Paolo Pasolini par Silvia Lucà, Colette par Chiara Carlino). And last but not least, les beaux travaux de philologie (Marco Veneziale et Robert Hackett) qui apportent une lecture finie d’arguments qui ont faits l’objet d’études et de discussions même récemment, avec la présentation de leur projet d’édition critique ou leur lecture de l’œuvre poétique de Catulle au Moyen Age. Une palette de sujets importants et novateurs qu’Ema Gjika complète avec l’idée d’une analyse linguistique contrastive entre l’italien, le français et l’albanais. Au moment où le volume parait et, je l’espère, une tradition commence, je dois remercier l’équipe des jeunes doctorants de l’Université de Bologne (Fulvia Balestrieri, Robert Hackett, Mihaila Petričić, Gemma Prandoni), qui ont bien voulu assumer la charge de l’organisation de ces journées et du volume. capacités démontrées à assumer une tâche parfois ingrate, qu’ils trouvent ici toute ma reconnaissance ainsi que celle des professeurs responsables du CLE: Peter Schnyder (Mulhouse), Pierre Hartmann (Strasbourg) et Georges Freris (Thessaloniki). Ces jeunes sont à la base de ce que ces actes disent: l’importance de la singularité de chacun en ce qu’elle a d’unique et d’irremplaçable - leur recherche, et en même temps le jeu de communion et de reconnaissance réciproque. In remembering the past, the mots-CLE of the future

The “keywords” that we present for the first time today are the fruit of scientific, cultural, and personal meetings of a group of doctoral students enrolled in several European universities. They offer us their “Research Horizons”, their first steps into the research community. The novelty of these horizons is that these young researchers have known each other for quite some time; they all participated in the MA program in Literary European Cultures, founded in 2008 by the Universities of Bologna, Haute Alsace, Strasbourg and Thessaloniki: an Erasmus Mundus Master. Apart from the framework of excellence that this label implies (as this is a course that can apply the term only after a very rigorous examination by the European Commission) this Master’s program, thanks to its very structure, revolves around the comprehension of ‘The Other’. Indeed, the program welcomes students from all over the world who, over a course of two years, study, discuss, and attempt to understand "European Literary Cultures" in several different languages. At the same time they must also learn to live together, to compare their own cultures, to see the differences therein and to respect them. We have chosen a play on words as our logo: by way of explanation, the key that takes shape is made of a common experience, of working together, and of the joy, pleasure and difficulties shared. This Master’s program - which has taught much to both the professors and the students through a series of encounters - aims to make its voice heard with the conviction that the arts, and that literature in particular, can and must allow people to communicate, to overcome misunderstandings. known within us all, literary criticism is obliged to explain it, to bring it to the surface. The young researchers who have been a part of this program have accepted this intriguing unknown courageously over the two years of study. They have dealt with difficult moments, limited timelines, and with situations that have forced them constantly to question themselves. They have come to understand that the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; has within itself, notwithstanding the difficulty in the approach, the beauty of novelty; that therein lies life, creation, and the crossroads for a full and promising future. It is also therein that they have found one of the most important keys to research. Thus in this context of remembering the past, the CLE Alumnae, who have begun their research, have decided to share it with others in the hopes of keeping alive their friendship and literary and cultural discussions. They also know that at the same time they are continuing their intimate dialogue that they started together, and that it must continue today among people who now live far away from each other, in different countries, working in different languages and with different customs and traditions. Their work must now continue to read between the lines of that which a culture shows, of what a period represents, of what a language reveals. If even today we seem to rely on keywords - to do research and to classify and define it - there are some keywords that can also be used to present fundamental ways of thinking to others. Thus, these articles represent the desire to engage with the scientific community, but also to say that friendship, working together, the sharing of languages, cultures and shared histories all come together to enrich the individual as well as society at large. From the Middle Ages to the present day, from linguistics to film studies: all of the articles in this volume were presented at our first conference, which took place in Bologna in July of 2013. Some of their research returns to well studied subjects, at times even recently in articles that have been thoroughly commented upon, for which the young scholars have found new avenues to explore.

In remembering the past, the mots-CLE of the future

Thus Gemma Prandoni looks back to the trips to the moon in the seventeenth century in order to study the differences with regard to the previous structure. Sleeping Beauty is seen, by Mihaila Petričić, through the lens of two recent films to offer a new vision as well as new perspectives thereof. Gabriel Ferreira Zacarias also focuses on a filmmaker, Guy Debord, showing the parallels between his concept of “misappropriation” with Barthes’ concept of mythology, the one being that which the other dreamed of. Simão Valente also has a novel approach to the crime novels of Fernando Pessoa, giving them attention that had been lacking until now. Fulvia Balestrieri examines writers and their reactions to the atomic bomb, the fundamental questions that this produced, and the role of the writer in society. Gabriella Quadrato presents her reading of a novel whose adventure is in the form and not the content, while Jovana Karanikikj has focused on migrant literature through an ethno-methodological perspective. Others of these scholars focus on their chosen authors and shine new light on some who have been, at times, misunderstood by critics (as is the case of Antoine Valodine in Gisela Bergonzoni’s reading and Maurice de Waleffe, as Mahan Saatchi shows). Still other scholars have chosen to re-interpret very well known authors (Pinget by Andrea Guiducci, Elsa Morante by Caterina Sansoni, Pasolini by Silvia Lucà, and Colette by Chiara Carlino). And last but not least we present the very fine philological studies (by Marco Veneziale and Robert Hackett) which provide a meticulous reading of issues that are the object of studies and discussions that are very much present, with the presentation of the project for a critical edition and the reading of Catullus’ poetic works during the Middle Ages. This important and innovative pallet of subjects is completed by Ema Gjika who presents a comparative linguistic analysis that is possible between Italian, French and Albanian. As this volume is released and, I hope, a tradition commences, I would like to thank the team of young PhD students of the University of Bologna (Fulvia Balestrieri, Robert Hackett, Mihaila Petričić and Gemma Prandoni) who have taken the organization of this volume

ticle is that Antoine Volodine deploys a renewal of literary authorship in his writing, thus offering a response to the “death of the author” idea formulated by French literary theory and namely by Roland Barthes. Through strategies that primarily seem to disseminate authorship and weaken the author’s figure as a unitary subject, Volodine actually reaffirms the author’s domination over the text. Andrea Guiducci (Université Paris Diderot – Paris 7) >L’hypothèse: the Non-Place of Hyperconscious Prose Abstract This essay addresses how hyperconsciousness works in the text by Pinget. The question will be examined through an analysis of three main relationships which construct L’hypothèse: the first between the mimetic and diegetic space, while the second is between a simulated extra-textual reality and the text itself, and finally, that between the main character and his speech. The article will show how the conventional relationship these elements are supposed to have is subverted. These three pairs are based on a diallelic relation which affects the entire text. It leads to a meta-literary questioning that founds the text and establishes a certain kind of plot: this is one of the aspects of hyperconscious prose I will focus on in my thesis. Gabriel Ferreira Zacarias (Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate «Cultural Studies in Literary Interzones», Università di Bergamo/ Université Paris X/ Université de Perpignan) >Stolen Language: Détournement and Mythology Abstract In the present article I will study the existing relationship between two different concepts elaborated approximately at the same time by two French authors. The first one is that of détournement, created by Guy Debord in 1956 as a sort of extension of Lautreamont’s notion of plagiarism. The second is that of mythology as proposed by Roland Barthes in 1957, a critique of mass culture ideology based on the analyses of its signs. Such a parallel will not take into account any biographical relationship between the authors, but rather the objective relationship that may be established through their concepts. Caterina Sansoni (Université de Strasbourg/ Università di Pisa) >The Social Dimension of the Characters in the Works of Elsa Morante Abstract Reading Elsa Morante’s works allows us to uncover an original and modern vision of literature. Her writing sheds light on the mission of Art and makes readers adopt the point of view of an intelligent observer of society and mankind. Morante’s characters revolve around her conception of the role of Art: fighting against the disintegration of man, against the unreality that tries to lead life astray. The analysis of the characters’ social dimension presents a research scope that is wide but at the same time rich in ideas about the poetics and project of the writer, whose career followed the development of Italian society for almost the whole of the twentieth century.

past, but also as an intermediate category, indicating tense relations or modal uses. In the verb system of the French language it has been considered as a “tense” of the declarative mood. The Albanian language, as a separate branch of the Indo-European family, presents the Latin influence on the lexical, phonetic, morphological and syntactical level. Jovana Karanikikj (Univerzitet Goce Delcev – Stip/ Università degli studi di Perugia) >Analyse de catégorisation des membres comme un outil dans les études de la «littérature migrante» Résumé Cet article a l’intention de présenter quelques résultats d’un projet de recherche interdisciplinaire plus large sur ce qu’on appelle la «littérature migrante italienne» en introduisant une approche analytique novatrice à ce phénomène culturel en Italie. Le terme «littérature migrante italienne» (letteratura di migrazione) fait référence à un «sous-genre» développé en Italie dans les deux dernières décennies par les auteurs issus de l’immigration qui choisissent d’écrire en italien. Le projet de recherche mentionné examine des textes de la littérature migrante italienne dans une perspective etnométhodologique et sociolinguistique afin d’identifier les éléments à travers lesquels les individus sont classés comme étant «migrants». We will analyze several front pages and five articles written by European writers including Albert Camus, George Bernard Shaw, Piero Calamandrei, Jean-Paul Sartre and Denis de Rougemont. We will see that thinking about science after August 1945 implies talking about choices and responsibilities connected to the use of scientific discoveries and their technical applications. Chiara Carlino (Université de Strasbourg) >Writing the Catastrophe of Aging. The Case of Colette Abstract Old age is the result of a progressive metamorphic process which invests the entire existence of an individual, starting at birth and never stopping. However, the inevitability of such a physiological fate does not necessarily imply its serene acceptance. Aging is often seen as a calamity that threatens existence itself, and it seems to be more dangerous for women. In Colette’s work, wherein the aging process of women represents a leitmotif, this idea of senescence designed as disaster is manifest. Through the analysis of female characters’ attitudes towards aging, we will try to explore the catastrophic dimension of aging, an enemy of the body and the soul, haunting women with the awful prospect of their own decline. Gabriella Quadrato (Università di Bari/ Université de Strasbourg) >Between Paludes and La Vagabonde. An Aesthetics of the Wandering Novel Abstract After Naturalism the French novel passes through a crisis. The title Paludes shows well the condition of a genre that seems to have lost its inspiration and straightforwardness. In this novel, the denied possibility of realizing travel denounces how, by contrast, it is necessary to establish a new wandering fiction: this indicates a new stream in the development of the novel. The paper will analyze three kinds of wandering fiction in three of Colette’s novels, Tinan and Roger Martin du Gard. Passionate about art, history and travel, this Belgian writer has written novels, plays, and essays but he is best known as a journalist, founder of Paris-midi and the Miss France contest. La Madeleine amoureuse is one of his historical novels, forgotten in spite of its beauty and richness of images and ideas. In this paper we will study the mechanism through which the novelist rewrites the biblical story of Mary Magdalene around founders mythemes of the original story, such as: Magdalene possessed by demons, as an anonymous prostitute converted by Jesus, the faithful companion of Jesus during his travels and finally as the witness at the foot of the cross and on Easter morning. Kepler, Godwin and Cyrano de Bergerac Abstract The Copernican Revolution and the discoveries of seventeenth-century astronomy have had a strong impact on the culture and literature of the time. The boundaries between the domains of literature and science became increasingly blurred. This study examines F. Aït-Touati’s analysis of the lunar/sun voyages in the works of Kepler, Godwin and Cyrano de Bergerac: texts exploiting fiction as an instrument to dialogue with contemporary science. Doctorat d’Études Supérieures Européennes «Les littératures de l’Europe unie») >La réception de Catulle dans l’Europe médiévale: trois lecteurs chrétiens Résumé L’œuvre poétique de Catulle est presque inconnue pendant la totalité du Moyen Âge, le premier manuscrit qui nous est parvenu datant du XIVe siècle environ. Avant cette date, il y a seulement trois occasions où le poète latin est nommé: dans la lettre 53 de saint Jérôme (entre 394 – 396), dans les Éthymologies d’Isidore de Séville (VIIe siècle) et après, dans un sermon de Ratherius de Vérone (Xe siècle). En examinant les œuvres de ces trois auteurs, on aboutit à diverses conclusions. Catulle a été connu par les auteurs chrétiens, mais ils ont choisi de le censurer. Mihaila Petričić Après avoir complété sa licence à l’Université de McGill (Canada), Mihaila Petričić a obtenu son master à l’Université de Bologne (Italie) et à l’Université de Haute-Alsace (France). Elle est actuellement doctorante à l’Université de Bologne sous la direction de Mme Crisafulli dans le cadre du programme D.E.S.E. – Les Littératures de l’Europe Unie. Sa thèse doctorale porte sur l’influence de la science sur la figure de la belle au bois dormant dans la littérature et le cinéma européens. After completing her B.A. at McGill University (Canada), Mihaila Petričić obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Bologna (Italy) and the University of Haute-Alsace (France). She is currently a PhD student of the doctoral program D.E.S.E. – Les Littératures de l’Europe Unie at the University of Bologna, under the supervision of Professor Crisafulli. She is writing her doctoral thesis on the influence of science on the Sleeping Beauty figure in European literature and cinema. Gisela Bergonzoni Gisela Bergonzoni est doctorante en Littérature Générale et Comparée auprès de l’Université Rennes 2, sous la direction d’Emmanuel Bouju. Andrea Guiducci Andrea Guiducci est doctorant à l’Université Paris Diderot sous la direction de Dominique Rabaté. Andrea Guiducci is a PhD student under the supervision of Dominique Rabaté at Paris Diderot University. He is researching hyperconsciousness writing in contemporary French literature. Gabriel Ferreira Zacarias Gabriel Ferreira Zacarias est doctorant contractuel du programme Erasmus Mundus «Études Culturelles des Interzones Littéraires», géré par les universités de Bergamo, Paris X et Perpignan. Ema Gjika Professeur d’italien à l’Université «Nostra Signora del Buon consiglio» de Tirana en Albanie, elle est, depuis avril 2013, doctorante en linguistique italienne à l’Université de Genève. Son sujet de recherche est l’étude contrastive du conditionnel en italien, français et albanais.
